Jonathan Trott was always going to be a tough man to replace at No. 3, but the early signs are that in Gary Ballance England have someone with the all-round game to take hold of the position.Since assuming the role in the first Test against Sri Lanka he has made 23, 104 not out, 74, 0 and 71 – his hundred, in his previous outing at Lord’s, was England’s first from No. 3 since Trott made 121 against New Zealand, at Wellington, in March 2013.The elevation up the order to a position Ballance had barely occupied in his professional career – and which had also been filled by Joe Root and Ian Bell after Trott left Australia – has meant the attacking batting he has come renowned for on the domestic circuit has largely been locked away, although he hinted at his potential when he charged towards three figures last month and reached the landmark with a six. However, he is more than happy to take on a more cautious role and has provided a stabilising effect on the top order to help counter, somewhat, the poor form of Alastair Cook. The latest he has come to the crease so far this season is in the 19th over.”I am happy to play the patience game, to bat for time and bat for as long as possible,” he said. “It would have been nice to have kicked on in those last few games but that’s how it goes and hopefully I can build on that. If you bowl straight or with tight lines then it is hard to score so you’ve got to be patient.”After a hostile debut against Mitchell Johnson in Sydney, Ballance is now starting to feel at home at international level. “I think so, I feel like I have brought some good form in to it, like I said, a few decent scores, it would be nice to kick on and get a really big score and a match-winning one to try to get us a win for England and get us going for the summer.”While batting remains the reason Ballance has been selected he showed unexpected promise with the lesser known skill of legspin, albeit during a light-hearted finish to the Trent Bridge Test when he sent down the penultimate over of the match. He had previously bowled 24 wicketless overs in first-class cricket but he may now put in some extra work in the nets.”To be honest I was quite nervous before I bowled, I wasn’t really expecting it,” he said. “I was just glad the first one landed and then after that I had a little bit of confidence and I bowled six balls, probably a bit slow, but I might get a few more overs in the nets and we’ll see where we go from there.”It is quite tough as a part time wrist spinner, it is difficult and although I bowled a lot in the nets a Yorkshire I never had the chance to bowl in a game.”Every captain does want that that extra option and maybe as a wrist spinner there might be an opportunity on a flat wicket where the game is going nowhere. Maybe I need to work on it a bit harder, but at the moment it is about concentrating on the batting and getting big scores.”Anyone who is able to offer Cook another viable option to give his quick bowlers a break should be encouraged to take his chance seriously.

Ireland-Sri Lanka ODIs to be streamed online

Ireland’s two ODIs against Sri Lanka will be streamed live via YouTube after an agreement was struck with Irish online TV provider Aertv. The broadcast, which will be supported by the ICC’s Development Programme, will make use of four high-definition cameras as well as replays and commentary. The deal is similar to last year’s arrangement with Quipu TV for the visit of Pakistan, which was viewed by almost 300,000 people. Sri Lanka will prepare for their tour of England with one-dayers against Ireland at Clontarf on May 6 and 8.”We’ve seen with previous broadcasts just how much of an appetite there is for cricket coverage, and it’s fantastic for Irish and cricket supporters worldwide to be able to view these matches online,” Cricket Ireland’s chief executive, Warren Deutrom, said. “It’s another important step in securing the long-term legacy for international cricket in Ireland as we look to take the game here to a higher level and a wider audience.”The games will be streamed on the Cricket Ireland website and its YouTube channel, as well as on Dublin-based Aertv’s website. Ireland’s recent trip to the Caribbean, where they beat West Indies for the first time in a T20 international, was also broadcast online.

Ross Taylor to undergo rehab for knee niggle

Ross Taylor, the New Zealand batsman, will undergo treatment for a niggle in his knee over the following week. Taylor had aggravated an injury to his patella tendon after returning from the tour of Bangladesh, New Zealand Cricket (NZC) said in a release, but it is not serious and he could be fit in time for the Plunket Shield game that begins on November 26 following rehabilitation.Taylor and captain Brendon McCullum had been rested for the tour to Sri Lanka to allow them to prepare for the home Test series against West Indies. McCullum also had to address a back issue, which kept him out of the final two games against Bangladesh. He has begun “light training” this week, the NZC release said, and is likely to be ready to play the tour game against West Indies that starts on November 27.In McCullum’s absence, batsman Kane Williamson was supposed to lead the side in Sri Lanka, but suffered a fractured thumb himself. He now has “movement in his left thumb”, NZC said, and “will have an update on when he can return to cricket when he sees his specialist again next week”.The statement also confirmed that opener Martin Guptill – who returned to first-class cricket this week after a long layoff due to surgery on his right ankle and a fractured finger – had retired hurt during the ongoing Plunket Shield game only as a “precaution”. He had made 62 for Auckland in his first game since September, before tightness in his hamstring caused him to retire overnight. He later returned, at the fall of the fifth wicket, and finished with 85.

Read drops one-day captaincy

Chris Read has committed his future to Nottinghamshire with a new two-year deal, but will hand over the limited-overs captaincy while retaining the leadership of the Championship team

ESPNcricinfo staff30-Oct-2013Chris Read has committed his future to Nottinghamshire with a new two-year deal, but will hand over the limited-overs captaincy while retaining leadership of the Championship team.Towards the end of the 2013 season, when Nottinghamshire secured the Yorkshire Bank 40 title at Lord’s and battled to avoid Championship relegation, Read had put talks about his future on hold. His batting form slumped during the campaign with just two half-centuries in the Championship.”My focus at the end of last season was on winning a one-day trophy and avoiding relegation so I felt the need to take a couple of weeks to reflect before considering a way forward for myself and the team,” Read said.”I demand a lot from myself and I wasn’t happy with my batting in the Championship last season although I felt that I kept wicket to a high standard. I always thought that captaincy was something that I would take on for a few years before handing over the reins. Stepping away from it in limited overs cricket is the start of me doing that.”Stephen Fleming was incredibly helpful when I began to take on the role here and I will be similarly supportive to the new limited-overs captain.”The club have yet to decide who will take over from Read in the 50-over and 20-over competitions although James Taylor and Michael Lumb are at the head of the queue.Nottinghamshire are also closing in on securing two key signings: an overseas bowler and a senior top-order batsman. Alongside Stuart Broad and Graeme Swann, who the club rarely see, Taylor, Lumb, Samit Patel and Alex Hales are often part of the England set-up either at full or Lions level.Read said: “It’s important to look forward to next season and to make plans for improvement and we felt that we needed some experienced additions, particularly when we’re missing the likes of Alex Hales, Michael Lumb, Samit Patel and James Taylor.”We’ve targeted some players with excellent track records and I’m confident that they can improve us.”The other looming issue that Nottinghamshire still need to clear up is their position over Hales, Lumb and any other players who are keen to put their name forward for the IPL. Mick Newell, the head coach, barred any of his squad from going to the tournament this year because he did not want his team weakened but Newell’s stance has softened and the club are working to accommodate the IPL.

Bracewell, Sodhi defy India A

Doug Bracewell and Ish Sodhi, Nos 9 and 10, defied India A with a 162-run partnership that stretched the New Zealand A innings to 437 on the second day of the second and final unofficial Test in Visakhapatnam

The home team were tottering at 16 for 2 in reply, but recovered to end the day on 94 for 2, still needing another 194 runs to make the visitors bat again.Bracewell, who had seven first-class fifties prior to this game, was four runs short of his maiden hundred when he fell to the captain Abhishek Nayar for 96. By then, he had already clubbed 11 fours and one six during his 132-ball stay. Sodhi, the Ludhiana-born legspinner, played the ideal foil to Bracewell’s aggression, and faced 10 more deliveries than his partner did to make his highest first-class score of 57, also his fourth fifty in the format in 16 innings.Having kept the Indians at bay for about 12 overs on the first evening, the duo proved difficult to remove for more than 31 overs on the second morning, before Nayar bowled Bracewell. Four deliveries later, Sodhi was caught by Unmukt Chand off Dhawal Kulkarni to end the innings in the 122nd over. New Zealand A had added nearly 400 runs after having been reduced to 43 for 4 on the first morning.Chand had his second failure of the series when he was caught behind for 4 in the fifth over off Mark Gillespie. After tormenting them with the bat, Bracewell delivered another blow to India A with the ball when he had Vijay Zol caught by Tom Latham for 2. Opener VA Jagadeesh and Manprit Juneja stabilized the innings thereafter. Both progressed to unbeaten forties by stumps, but the hosts still have a lot of work to do on the third day.

Poor weather keeps Broad at home

Stuart Broad will not join up with the England ODI squad in India after poor weather prevented him leaving London

ESPNcricinfo staff20-Jan-2013Stuart Broad will not join up with the England ODI squad in India after poor weather prevented him from leaving London.Broad had been rested for the first three ODIs and was scheduled to return for the final two matches but his departure was delayed by snow and freezing conditions at London Heathrow airport. With the forecast not set to improve quickly, Broad would have struggled to arrive in sufficient time for the fourth ODI on Wednesday.Broad tweeted: “Gutted I can’t get to India. I’m off home with all my luggage at Heathrow. I’ll be waiting for the lads in New Zealand!!”He will now remain in Britain and fly to New Zealand for the first warm-up match on February 4, ahead of the Twenty20 series for which Broad will resume the captaincy having been injured for England’s two T20s against India before Christmas.”It’s not ideal because we were hoping for him to come out here and, whether or not he played in one of the last two games, just do some prep for New Zealand,” England one-day coach Ashley Giles said. “But we have a bit of time in New Zealand and he’ll meet us there.”It could be questioned how useful a week in India would be ahead of a tour to New Zealand where conditions will be a complete contrast. Broad will now return to Loughborough to continue his preparation. And although there were doubts about Broad’s fitness to play in India, his absence reduces England’s options if they choose to make a change to their bowling attack. Jade Dernbach is the main candidate to be replaced after taking only four wickets in the series. The cost of his wickets – 46.75 – compares favourably to the other England seamers but his economy rate of 7.79 is by far the most expensive of the frontline bowlers on either side.Giles said that part of the trip “was always about having a look at different options” and England could recall Chris Woakes, who took 1 for 60 in the second ODI, or pick Stuart Meaker, whose pace caused India problems in the T20 series. They also have left-arm spinner Danny Briggs in the squad if they need a second specialist slow bowler but conditions in Mohali for the fourth ODI are likely to provide more help to the quick bowlers.

Maia Bouchier, Charlie Dean ruled out of first T20I vs New Zealand, Emma Lamb called into England squad

Bouchier and Dean identified as possible Covid-19 contacts, expected to return for second T20I

Valkerie Baynes28-Aug-2021Charlie Dean and Maia Bouchier have been ruled out of England’s opening T20I against New Zealand after being identified as possible contacts of a COVID-19 case. The pair, who both earned maiden international call-ups for the series, are expected to join up with the England squad ahead of the second T20I at Hove in a week’s time, pending test results.”In order to evaluate the situation and undergo further testing they will miss the first Vitality IT20 against New Zealand,” the ECB said.Emma Lamb has been drafted into the England squad ahead of the first match, at Chelmsford on Wednesday.Batting allrounder Lamb scored an unbeaten 111 off 61 balls opening for Thunder in the Charlotte Edwards Cup against Sunrisers in July, when she also took 3 for 16. She then played all seven of Manchester Originals’ completed matches in the Hundred, with notable scores of 32, 39 and 46 and claiming all three of her wickets for the tournament against Birmingham Phoenix, again taking 3 for 16.Related

The as-yet uncapped Lamb was named in a 24-strong England training squad last June as players resumed individual programmes at various venues around the country after the first wave of the Covid pandemic.Lamb’s inclusion means that England have again resisted the temptation to pick 17-year-old allrounder Alice Capsey despite her impressive efforts for Oval Invincibles during their late charge to the Hundred title.Bouchier scored 92 runs in seven innings for Southern Brave during the Hundred at an average of 30.66 and with a strike rate of 143.75. Allrounder Dean, who played for London Spirit in the Hundred, claimed a wicket and scored 22 as part of an England A team which beat New Zealand by four wickets in a 50-over warm-up match.Taunton will host the last of the three England-New Zealand T20Is on September 9, with five ODI matches to follow as both sides ramp up their preparations for the World Cup, starting in New Zealand in March, where England are defending champions.
