Bale 2.0: Spurs frontrunners to sign “hugely impressive” star after talks

It’s sacking season in the Premier League, although Tottenham Hotspur are holding their nerve with regard to Thomas Frank, even amid a difficult spell for the former Brentford boss.

A frustrating 1-1 draw with Sunderland last time out again saw the Dane’s defensive-minded substitutions backfire late on, with the Lilywhites currently lacking that cutting edge and killer instinct in the final third.

It’s been pragmatic and cautious, an approach that might be a much-needed change from Ange Postecoglou’s tenure, although it is winning Frank few friends at N17.

Perhaps, however, patience is merely what is needed in north London, with it looking as if the club are ready to back their man in the winter window to try and improve upon their current malaise.

Spurs still holding talks over exciting January deal

The ongoing woes at Spurs were again encapsulated over the weekend, with Frank and co signing off on the sale of Brennan Johnson to Crystal Palace, only to then see Mohammed Kudus forced off in the first half against the Black Cats.

With Johnson having arguably been the most obvious understudy to Kudus on that right flank, it would be no surprise to see the north Londoners dip into the market, with a move for Manchester City’s Savinho still being mooted.

Reports last week also claimed that talks were advanced for West Ham’s Lucas Paqueta, although there is yet a third Brazilian target on their radar, in the form of Santos starlet, Souza.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

As per TEAMtalk, Tottenham have not given up on signing the 19-year-old even after seeing their initial bid rejected, having again been holding talks regarding a potential deal.

The report suggests that while rival interest is mounting from the likes of Newcastle United and Chelsea’s BlueCo owners, it is Spurs who appear to be the frontrunners still, having been described as the ‘most advanced’.

In terms of a price tag, with ENIC’s initial £8.7m bid having been rebuffed, the Brazilian outfit are looking for closer to £17.3m.

Why Souza could be Spurs' next Bale signing

It’s fair to say that Spurs’ high-profile, more marquee deals haven’t exactly paid off in recent years, be it Tanguy Ndombele, Richarlison or Dominic Solanke, the latter of whom has been riddled by injury over the last 18 months or so.

There has arguably been much more success and enjoyment gained from plucking out something of a bargain instead, not least the likes of Pape Matar Sarr and Dejan Kulusevski.

Plumping for young, high-potential talent in that mould appears to fit the ethos of Spurs, with that theme of the 21st century in north London, not least with the likes of Dele Alli and Gareth Bale.

As an exciting, teenage left-back, Souza could well look to follow in the footsteps of Bale at the club, with the legendary Welshman having joined as a 17-year-old back in 2007.

Signed by Daniel Levy for just £5m, the now-retired speedster endured a sticky start after failing to win any of his first 24 Premier League games, prior to exploding onto the scene following that night away at the San Siro.

From struggling full-back to explosive winger, the left-footer was the perfect example of what Spurs should be all about, ultimately racking up 124 goals and assists in 237 games across his two spells for the club.

Suggesting that Souza could follow in those footsteps might appear hyperbolic, although he is a “hugely impressive” figure in his own right, in the view of scout Ben Mattinson, catching the eye in his embryonic senior career at Santos.

Bale, for comparison, had made just 45 appearances himself at Southampton, prior to moving to the capital, albeit while contributing 17 goals and assists for the Saints.

Souza is then arguably more of a natural left-back, although his potential is sky high, with Mattinson – who has also pointed to his “good athleticism” – suggesting that he will go “right to the very top”.

In the view of South American journalist Nathan Joyes too, his “attacking numbers would drastically improve” if placed in a “better squad”, with Joyes noting that the youngster is “tall, direct, athletic” – all attributes shared with a young Bale.

It is then clear to see why Spurs are so eager to get this deal done, with there likely to be another bargain to be had for the north London outfit this month.

He’d get Sesko firing: Man Utd could sack Amorim to hire “top-drawer” coach

Chelsea have already pulled the trigger with Enzo Maresca, but will 2026 also prove to be the end for Ruben Amorim at Manchester United?

It is gearing up for a potentially seismic period of change across the Premier League, with Thomas Frank and Arne Slot both under scrutiny at Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool, respectively, while the word is that Manchester City are lining up replacements for Pep Guardiola ahead of next season.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe has stated recently that Amorim will be given three years to impress at Old Trafford, although Tuesday’s dismal draw with bottom-side Wolverhampton Wanderers has again thrown his position into doubt.

With a pivotal month in store that includes away trips to Elland Road and the Emirates, alongside the Manchester derby, it is approaching make-or-break time for United’s Portuguese coach.

Why Amorim's position should be under threat at Man Utd

The midweek stalemate with Wolves marked Amorim’s 44th Premier League game in charge, since replacing Erik ten Hag in November 2024, with the 40-year-old picking up just 14 wins in that time and registering a woeful 1.2 points per game average.

For context, during his heady days at Sporting CP, the promising coach romped to a 2.47 points per game average, having remarkably won 129 of his 166 games in charge.

Such success – and the Portuguese’s 3-4-3 set-up – simply hasn’t been replicated in England’s top tier, however, with Amorim the man to have overseen the club’s worst-ever Premier League finish last time out.

Improvements, undoubtedly, have been made this time around, although it’s hardly been an ideal festive period, with the Red Devils winning just one of their last five home games, a run that has included favourable match-ups with the likes of Wolves, West Ham United and a ten-man Everton.

There is the caveat that Amorim has been hamstrung by injury and AFCON absentees, but his selection decisions are beginning to grate, notably reverting back to a back three last time out, despite appearing to find some rhythm with Patrick Dorgu as a right-winger in a 4-3-3.

Unfortunately, there are echoes of Ten Hag’s final days, with the Dutchman memorably hooking scorer Marcus Rashford at the break away in Porto, only for United to proceed to draw 3-3 in that chaotic Europa League clash.

Like with his predecessor, Amorim doesn’t appear to be helping himself, even with a depleted squad, with change in the dugout potentially in the offing.

Man Utd's perfect Amorim replacement could get Sesko firing

For all Ratcliffe’s public backing, behind the scenes it might well be a different story, with reports earlier this week indicating that INEOS are working on a possible succession plan.

Manager Focus

Who are the greatest coaches in the land? Football FanCast’s Manager Focus series aims to reveal all.

Indeed, the belief is that Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glasner is being discussed internally as a potential ‘safe pair of hands’, with the Austrian’s own future in doubt at Selhurst Park with just six months left on his contract.

The former Eintracht Frankfurt boss – who won the Europa League with the Bundesliga side – did actually steer Palace to a 2-1 defeat to Amorim’s side not too long ago, although that should not overshadow the fine work he has done with the Eagles in recent seasons.

An FA Cup winner last time out, Glasner has worked wonders to turn Palace into a real European contender, even while having lost the likes of Michael Olise and Eberechi Eze in successive summers.

That is certainly the view of ex-Palace man Clinton Morrison, who has lauded him as a “top-drawer” coach.

The 51-year-old’s biggest success, arguably, has been overseeing the transformation of reported United target Jean-Philippe Mateta, with the towering Frenchman scoring 38 league goals since the start of 2023/24.

Indeed, 39 of the 28-year-old’s 55 goals for the club have come in just 87 games under Glasner, having played 180 times in total since arriving from Mainz in January 2021.

Perhaps, Glasner could work wonders with another 6 foot 4, Bundesliga import at Old Trafford, with Benjamin Sesko enduring his own slow start in English football, after scoring just twice to date.

Like Mateta, however – who scored 27 goals in 71 games in Germany – there is a talent in there to be unleashed, with the £74m Slovenian having netted 39 times in 87 games at RB Leipzig.

Noted to be a stylistically similar player to Mateta among their Premier League peers, as per FBref, Sesko could be another physical focal point for Glasner to work around, having reaped the rewards of his own 3-4-3 or 3-4-2-1 set-up.

Those at United may be wary of turning toward another coach who typically favours a back three, although if utilised successfully – and with a Mateta-like figure leading the line – Glasner could replicate his Palace heroics up in Manchester.

He might well be the man to finally get Sesko firing too.

Wolves linked with Carter-Vickers transfer

Wolves have been rather impressive in terms of their defensive output in the Premier League this season with just 20 goals conceded in 25 games, leaving only Chelsea and Manchester City with a better record in that department.

Despite this, it seems as though the Midlands club have identified one player that could come in and potentially strengthen their defensive depth.

What’s the news?

According to a recent report from TEAMtalk, Wolves are one of the clubs interested in making a move to sign Tottenham Hotspur defender Cameron Carter-Vickers, who is currently picking up a weekly wage of £22k-per-week according to Salary Sport.

As a product of Spurs’ youth academy, the 24-year-old has had loan spells at clubs such as Sheffield United, Ipswich Town, Swansea City, Stoke City, Luton Town, AFC Bournemouth and Celtic, where he currently is.

Having played the second-highest amount of minutes in the SPFL this season out of any outfield Celtic player, the centre-back has earned himself an impressive overall performance rating of 7.33/10 from WhoScored, making him the fourth-highest rated player at the Scottish club to have started more than five league games.

As well as his impressive overall performances, the centre-back, who has been described as “mature” by Hoops manager Ange Postecoglou and “incredible” by Graeme Jones, has also shown what a capable defender he is by racking up more clearances in the league than any other player at the Parkhead club with an average of 4.7 per game.

From a Wolves point of view, only Romain Saiss (5.3) has managed to rack up a higher average of clearances in the Premier League this season, showing that the Spurs player would be capable of slotting into the Old Gold’s backline.

In addition to this, if the Midlands club were to make a swoop for Carter-Vickers in the summer when his Celtic loan ends, this could give Jeff Shi the chance to finally get rid of one of the current centre-backs at Molineux that hasn’t been a particularly prominent figure for Lage this season.

At 31-years-old, Willy Boly – who has played 137 total games for the club – has not made a single appearance in the Premier League this season due to some injury issues, which have apparently left the defender “frustrated” according to Lage, as well as the solid form of Saiss, Conor Coady and Max Kilman.

With that in mind, it could be worth Wolves bringing in the 6 foot 1 Tottenham loanee in the summer as a potential long-term replacement for Boly if they think it’s the right time to bring his time at the club to an end.

Newcastle: Waugh hints at two XI changes

Allan Saint-Maximin and Bruno Guimaraes could start for Newcastle against Southampton on Thursday, according to The Athletic’s Chris Waugh.

The lowdown

The Magpies travel to the south coast later in the week looking to extend their fine run of form. Eddie Howe’s men beat Brighton 2-1 last time out to make it eight games unbeaten and move seven points clear of the drop zone.

Saint-Maximin hasn’t started since the 1-0 victory over Aston Villa last month, missing two matches with a minor injury before returning as a substitute against the Seagulls.

Meanwhile, Guimaraes has only played 39 minutes across five runouts from the bench since his £40m move from Lyon in January.

The latest

Waugh thinks that Saint-Maximin could make his return to the starting line-up at St Mary’s, with Jacob Murphy dropping to the bench. He also expects Guimaraes to soon get a run of starts given Howe’s inclination to rotate.

In a Q&A for The Athletic, he stated: “In terms of Guimaraes, I think there is a good chance he will start one or more of the next few games, yeah. His composure on the ball may be crucial in away matches, and Howe has already hinted at rotation, so I think there’s a good chance we’ll see him start soon.

“As for Saint-Maximin, he would likely come in for Murphy, I feel. Not today, I suspect, but possibly at Southampton.”

Waugh added that Guimareas could slot in alongside Jonjo Shelvey in a revised 4-2-3-1 shape, stating that the “exciting” system was trialled when the 24-year-old came on against Brentford last month.

The verdict

Newcastle’s return of seven points from the past three matches is all the more impressive when you consider that Saint-Maximin hasn’t been able to start. The Frenchman has recorded more goal involvements (eight – five goals and three assists) than anybody else in the Magpies’ squad this season (via BBC Sport).

With perhaps their most dangerous player, along with the second-biggest signing in the club’s history, to potentially come into the line-up, they should have more than enough to secure safety in the coming weeks and further extend their already impressive unbeaten run.

Saints handed potential Broja boost

The news that Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich put Chelsea up for sale sent shock waves across the football world, but the decision was in the best interests of the club with everything that is happening in Ukraine right now.

Implications yet aren’t too clear, but it is believed that the club are going to become more ‘self-reliant’ and may need to sell to buy in the summer – allowing the potential sale of Armando Broja.

Southampton fans have fallen in love with the 20-year-old striker on-loan from the European Champions, who on Wednesday scored a sensational solo goal to secure his team’s spot in the FA Cup quarter-final, and the player himself is seemingly beginning to fall in love with the club too.

In an interview with the Saints matchday programme, Broja said: “It’s gone so fast. When you think about it, it’s crazy! That six months have flown by. I would say I’m very happy with how it’s gone – I came here as a young boy and every day I’m learning and progressing, and starting to build into a man.

“That’s thanks to Southampton. They’ve helped me with my journey so far, and hopefully it keeps getting better.

“That’s thanks to Southampton. They’ve helped me with my journey so far, and hopefully it keeps getting better.”

Despite playing just the second half on Wednesday, Broja was Southampton’s highest performer in match rating (7.6) according to SofaScore, winning a penalty also that James Ward-Prowse converted and terrorising the Hammers back-line with his pace, power and aggression.

His development has been rapid, and it has earned him admirers in the form of other clubs too, with Arsenal said to be also keen on the striker who journalist Fabrizio Romano believes is “performing at an incredible level.”

Saints boss Ralph Hasenhuttl needs to do everything in his power to make sure Broja turns down any other interested teams though, as his combination of size, athleticism and natural goal-scoring instincts could make him soon one of the best strikers in Europe. At a reported fee of £20m too, he could turn out to be a bargain.

Aston Villa’s 3 worst players v West Ham

Aston Villa saw their three-match winning streak ended by West Ham United on Sunday.

Andriy Yarmolenko put the Hammers in front with 20 minutes remaining at the London Stadium before Pablo Fornals doubled their lead. Jacob Ramsey’s 90th-minute effort proved to be too little, too late for Steven Gerrard’s men.

Here at The Transfer Tavern, we delve into the three worst-rated starters for the Villans as per statistical specialists SofaScore, with players required to feature for at least 45 minutes for ranking.

Matty Cash – 6.4/10

Cash has started every single Premier League game for Villa so far this season but this may go down as one of his poorer displays.

He lost possession 25 times (second among all players on the pitch, behind only West Ham’s Ben Johnson) and misplaced 13 of his 33 passes (39%). None of his crosses found a team-mate, while five of his six long balls went astray.

Furthermore, the 24-year-old was dribbled past twice during the game and lost four of the eight duels that he contested.

Calum Chambers – 6.5/10

Chambers was making his third consecutive start, but could he lose his place to Ezri Konsa off the back of this performance?

He surrendered the ball 11 times and misplaced six of the 10 long passes that he attempted, while not making any crosses. The ex-Arsenal defender won only one of his three ground duels and also committed two fouls during the match.

Douglas Luiz – 6.5/10

Luiz played 79 minutes before Gerrard brought him off to replace him with Emiliano Buendia.

In that time, the 23-year-old failed to complete any of his three long balls or two crosses and, like Cash, he was dribbled past on two occasions.

The Brazilian came off second best in two of his four ground duels and turned over the ball nine times overall.

Spurs suffer Japhet Tanganga injury blow

Tottenham manager Antonio Conte has suffered a major injury blow ahead of his team’s Premier League clash against West Ham on Sunday afternoon.

What’s the story?

A statement posted on the club’s official website revealed: “Japhet Tanganga has undergone surgery on his right knee and will be out for the remainder of the season.

“The England Under-21 international will undergo a period of recovery and is expected to return to training during the pre-season period.”

Blow for Tanganga

After making his breakthrough into the Spurs first-team squad under Jose Mourinho, things haven’t quite progressed as Tanganga may have hoped or expected.

The 22-year-old’s versatility has been one of his biggest strengths and arguably one of his biggest weaknesses too, failing to really nail down a place as either a right-sided full-back or a central defender.

Indeed, former Spurs midfielder Michael Brown had previously suggested that Tanganga’s long-term future could remain more infield, tipping him for big things.

He said of the 22-year-old: “He’s gone right-sided, he’s been in a three, he’s gone wing-back, he’s gone left-sided centre-half. It’s a wonderful position. You’re thinking would central defence be that one he’d mature in, to lead, to try and make that his own? I saw it with Phil Jagielka when I started playing with Sheffield United.

“He was a midfield player who then dropped back, like many do, into a right-back situation and we knew he had pace. As that maturity came in he slotted inside and ended up playing 40-odd games for England. It could be as he matures more he becomes that leader at central defence.”

However, this season under Conte and former boss Nuno Espirito Santo has seen Tananga play just 11 times in the Premier League, totalling 739 minutes of football in the top flight.

His knee injury came at a time just when it seemed like he might have broken into Conte’s plans, having played the full 90 minutes against Leicester and then playing just under an hour against Chelsea.

While Spurs have coped without Tanganga for the past few weeks, the news that his season is now officially over is bound to have left Conte gutted.

Wolves: Gomes contract hints at Kilman exit

Wolves this season have been excellent defensively, with just the Premier League’s top three teams conceding less than them, and that is partly due to the development of a player the fans have labelled a “beast”; Max Kilman, who is now on the verge of an England call-up having impressed throughout the campaign.

However, there comes a price as soon as a young English talent outside of the top six steps onto the stage in the top flight regularly and performs consistently, with that being the inevitable interest from the nation’s top clubs – and some of Europe’s heavyweights too.

The 6 foot 4 centre-back, currently averaging a 7.02 match rating in the top flight, is currently a target for his boyhood favourite club Chelsea, but journalist Pete O’Rourke has already claimed he expects more potential suitors interested, saying: “Everything’s going well for Max Kilman at the minute, but Wolves will be desperate to keep hold of him.

“But I’m sure there will be a few clubs looking in the summer, ready to test their resolve.”

As a left-footed central defender, the 24-year-old could find himself in demand at the end of the season – and though he would be a monumental loss to Wolves, manager Bruno Lage may already have his replacement in the squad for a man that reporter Chris Fischer dubbed an “animal.”

Toti Gomes, a £900k arrival from Estoril back in 2020, signed a new five-year deal at the club yesterday, which will keep him at Molineux until 2027 – suggesting that Lage has complete faith in him to make the step-up to first-team regular in the near future.

At 23-years-old, it would be strange to offer a player a long-term deal if the club doesn’t view him as an important part of the team, and with Gomes being left-footed, he could be able to fill in a Kilman-shaped whole in the squad – more so than any of the other right-footed centre-backs currently at the squad.

Having played just two Premier League games in which he has averaged a fairly solid 6.80 match rating, making four tackles per game as well as 4.5 clearances, two interceptions and one successful dribble on average, the signs so far have been promising – but we need to see more in order to be sure he can make the step-up.

Either way, it could just be a big hint that the club are preparing for life without Kilman, a player who could leave for a fee in the region of £30m.

Crystal Palace: Vieira must start Eze

Crystal Palace manager Patrick Vieira must unleash Eberechi Eze against Arsenal with star man Wilfried Zaha at risk of missing out due to injury.

The English attacking midfielder moved to Selhurst Park for £16m in 2020 from fellow London club Queens Park Rangers.

His form in the Championship got him the move as he tallied 22 goal contributions in his final season at Loftus Road, this was more than Palace’s Zaha, Christian Benteke and Jordan Ayew at the time.

Sky Sports commentator Daniel Mann has described him as a “showman” since his move to the Eagles and it’s evident to see why.

It could’ve been a risk spending that amount of money on a player from the second tier, with no guarantee that he will replicate his numbers in the Premier League.

However, history goes to show that players who have performed to that level in the EFL are worth taking a gamble on.

Both Mason Mount and Dele Ali replicated their form at Chelsea and Spurs after having stand out seasons in the Football League for both Derby and MK Dons respectively.

And in his first season in the top-flight Eze hit the ground running gaining ten goal contributions.

Despite having not played much this season, his stats over the past year continue to be impressive. He ranks in the top 1% for assists per 90 minutes in Europe’s top five leagues for instance.

Part of the reason he’s not been featured is due to missing the start of the season through injury, and because of this you could understand why Vieira perhaps doesn’t know yet just how good a talent he has on his hands.

But with top scorer Zaha in doubt for tonight’s game against Arsenal, will the French manager give Eze the opportunity he deserves?

His main competitor for a place in the team is likely to be Odsonne Edouard, the forward arrived from Celtic in the summer for £14.6m but he hasn’t yet hit the heights expected of him. He’s been averaging just 2.4 shots per 90 minutes which Vieira hasn’t been too impressed with.

Ultimately the £18m-rated Eze has a really bright future ahead of him, and starting him against Arsenal will surely give the Eagles the best chance at securing victory.

Rangers: Heart & Hand criticise Joe Aribo

Rangers’ Joe Aribo failed to make the desired impact in the Old Firm derby on Sunday, according to official club media partners Heart & Hand.

The lowdown

The Gers lost 2-1 against their arch-rivals in a result which could prove to be decisive in the title race.

Celtic are now six points clear at the top of the Premiership with six games to play after Tom Rogic cancelled out Aaron Ramsey’s opener and Cameron Carter-Vickers then scored the winning goal.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/rangers-news-2/” title=”Rangers news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Giovanni van Bronckhorst selected Aribo in the right attacking midfield role in his 4-2-3-1 shape, with Ramsey central and Ryan Kent slotting in on the left.

The Nigerian is one of the most trusted players at the club, starting 28 of the Light Blues’ 32 league matches so far this season.

The latest

During the first half of the game at Ibrox, Heart & Hand tweeted that Aribo was actually landing Rangers in trouble against Celtic.

They made the damning assessment that the 25-year-old was ‘causing us more problems than them’ on Sunday afternoon.

The verdict

What do the stats say about Aribo’s performance?

His SofaScore rating was a rather underwhelming 6.7/1o, the lowest of Rangers’ attacking foursome. The £9m-rated gem wasn’t able to fashion a chance for his team-mates and he didn’t have a shot of any description until the 89th minute of the match.

Furthermore, he lost possession 14 times and came off second best in four of the five aerial duels that he contested, which makes the criticism from Heart & Hand understandable.

Aribo is largely enjoying a fine season, with seven goals and eight assists under his belt, but this was perhaps a day to forget on a most unfortunate occasion to have it.
