T&T look to gatecrash IPL teams' party

Trinidad & Tobago, the only non-IPL team left in the competition, have a tough task at hand in the Champions League T20 semi-finals, as they come up against a star-laden Mumbai Indians line-up

The Preview by Rohan Sharma04-Oct-2013Match factsSaturday, October 5, 2013
Start time 2000 (1430 GMT)Trinidad & Tobago will hope Sunil Narine produces one of his special spells•BCCIBig PictureAfter making the inaugural Champions League T20 final against New South Wales in 2009, Trinidad & Tobago have not reached the tournament’s knockouts again. In this edition, the group stage got better and better for them. After a four-wicket loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad in their second match, they held on – helped by a late shower – in a must-win game against Titans, before shocking tournament favourites Chennai Super Kings in their final game. Their eight-wicket win against Super Kings was so comprehensive, they catapulted them into top place in Group B.T&T’s strength remains their bowling, specifically mystery spinner Sunil Narine who was the highest wicket-taker at the end of the group stage with eight scalps. While they’ve had the occasional sparkle from their batsmen – like Evin Lewis’ quickfire 70 against Titans – it is primarily Narine, with some help from seamers Ravi Rampaul and Rayad Emrit, who has brought the team so far. Still, T&T, the only non-IPL team left in the tournament, are the underdogs in their semi-final encounter, as they face a star-laden Mumbai Indians line-up.Mumbai’s progression to the semi-finals was far trickier. A humbling seven-wicket loss to Rajasthan Royals followed by a washout against Otago meant they faced an uphill task to go through. Upon securing a much-needed victory against Lions, they showed just what their power-packed batting is capable off, mowing down 150 in 13.2 overs (they needed to do so in 14.2) against Perth Scorchers to bump their net run rate over Otago and qualify. They are the reigning IPL champions and, as their captain Rohit Sharma said after the win against Scorchers, seem to be peaking at the right time. Should T&T complete another giant killing, though, there’ll be a footnote to the game: Mumbai’s last game in this tournament is likely to be Sachin Tendulkar’s last in limited-overs cricket. Also, Tendulkar is 26 runs short of 50,000 runs in all recognised cricket. In the spotlightWithout a doubt, the performance of Sunil Narine can prove to be the breaking point for either team. His eight wickets have been worth their weight in gold – add to that his economy rate of 4.31 and his ability to strike at key moments of the game, and you know you’ve got a match-winner on your hands. Also, he has a good record against Mumbai – in five innings against them, he has taken 9 wickets, with an economy of 5.16.Harbhajan Singh will be feeling the pressure, after claiming a solitary wicket for 72 runs in the competition so far. His Champions League record, overall, is average, with 13 wickets in 15 matches at an unflattering economy of 7.06. However, in his only other match against T&T, in the 2011 edition, he produced one of his best T20 spells with 3 for 22. He will hope to repeat – or better – come Saturday.Quotes”Ramdin’s men know my game well but I know theirs too, so it’s going to be interesting this Saturday.”

“Yes, we miss Dwayne Bravo, Kieron Pollard and Kevon Cooper, but we’re used to it now as it’s been happening to us for years. The other guys are stepping up to the plate and that’s good news for us.”

Australia keep probables list secret

Cricket Australia will not disclose its list of 30 probables for the Champions Trophy in England this June, breaking the norm followed by all countries ahead of ICC tournaments. It is understood that CA approached the ICC for clarification over the rules about squad announcement and then requested that the 30-man squad, which will be pruned to 15 in a month’s time, not be made public.”Custom and practice is that countries announce their provisional squads 60 days before the first ball is scheduled to be bowled in the tournament,” an ICC spokesperson said. “But this isn’t compulsory.”Pakistan have already released their list of 30 probables, and other countries are expected to do so by the end of the week. Australia have been grouped with England, New Zealand and Sri Lanka, and play their first game on June 8, against the hosts.

'I have more variations now' – Senanayake

Although Sri Lanka’s pace reserves have struggled to produce quality in recent years, a bevy of burgeoning spinners has begun to vie for places in the national team, the latest being 28-year old Sachithra Senanayake

Andrew Fidel Fernando29-Mar-2013Although Sri Lanka’s pace reserves have struggled to produce quality in recent years, hurt by a spate of serious injuries, a bevy of burgeoning spinners has begun to vie for long-term places in the national team.19-year-old Akila Dananjaya had a successful introduction to international cricket during the World Twenty20 last year, but has been used with utmost care and consideration, owing to his extreme inexperience. 20-year-old Tharindu Kaushal has amassed a staggering pile of domestic scalps in his debut season, but despite having been in the Test squad for two tours, he is yet to make an international appearance. Others like Suraj Randiv and Ajantha Mendis were picked on early promise, but have since lost their way in international cricket – though each of them is only one emphatic domestic season away from drawing interest again. The latest spinner to emerge from the peloton to make a dash for the top limited-overs spinner’s spot is 28-year-old Sachithra Senanayake. A tall offspinner with a relaxed approach to the crease, a reputation for taking heavy hauls, and the record to go with it, he has recently seen his career surge, in more ways than one. He had played for Sri Lanka in a handful of limited-overs matches early in 2012, but in South Africa and in Australia, his returns ranged from modest to mediocre, and after a three-month stretch as a regular, he was replaced by several of the competing spin bowlers. This year, though, a jaw-dropping $625,000 offer from Kolkata Knight Riders for the 2013 IPL brought Senanayake back into the limelight, and a strong first-class season earned him a recall into a national side looking to embed future stars. His first ODI against Bangladesh brought him only one wicket for 46 runs, but in Pallekele on Thursday night, he was Sri Lanka’s best bowler by a distance, taking 2 for 26 from six overs.”For about a year I didn’t have the opportunity to come into the national team,” Senanayake said. “But I did well in the provincial and domestic matches that I had to play, so that’s probably why I’m in the team again. I didn’t lose hope of getting back into the team and I performed well and showed that I’m good enough.”I have more variations now than I did when I first played for Sri Lanka. I think I’ll be able to do well because of those changes. Before, I just bowled the offbreak and the one that goes straight on. Now I have two more – one that goes the other way, and one that keeps low.”Senanayake was also handed a central contract at the beginning of the month, despite not having played since August 2012, at the international level. The contract is an indication that Sri Lanka’s new selection panel has high hopes from him, and will grant him time to mature at the top level.”I’m very thankful to the selection committee, because they didn’t choose players on a whim,” he said. “They’ve been watching cricketers for a while, and if they were performing well, [they saw] how long they had been doing well for. They’ve followed players closely and then categorised them, which is great.”Senanayake has been one of the most consistent spinners in domestic cricket, and his resurgence was built upon an exceptional List A season, in which he reaped 18 wickets at an average of 11.16. He was also among the top four wicket-takers in this year’s first-class competition, with 49 wickets at 16.32. He is the only specialist spinner in the young Twenty20 squad named for the one-off match against Bangladesh. He feels that having bowled on an SSC pitch, which is better suited to batting than many in the country, he has had to work hard to earn his wickets, and that that experience will hold him in good stead when playing for Sri Lanka.”In international cricket, even in Sri Lanka, you don’t get as many spin-friendly wickets as in the domestic circuit here,” he said. “If you look at the SSC pitch though, it is one of the best batting tracks in the country. Because of that, I don’t feel a big change when we play international cricket, and I think I’ll be able to do well.”He is aware, however, that there are exciting, young players on the scene who have not evaded the selectors’ gaze either. Senanayake may have an SLC contract, while many of them don’t, but there is little room to lag. After the Twenty20 on Sunday, Sri Lanka’s next assignment is the Champions Trophy in England, where Senanayake may be tasked with carrying the spin burden, given most pitches are unlikely to warrant fielding two slow bowlers.”It’s great the amount of competition that we have at the moment, because when there is a group of players behind me who are also pushing for players, I know that I have to do better than them. With that level of competition, if I don’t do well in two or three games, I can’t be certain of my place in the team. I have to constantly be on top of my game to earn selection for the next match.”

Jordan makes Sussex switch

Chris Jordan, the former Surrey allrounder, has signed a two-year contract with Sussex. Jordan was released by the London county, where he had been since the age of 17, at the end of the 2012 season after losing his place in the first team.Born in Barbados, 24-year-old Jordan is eligible to represent England and West Indies. Although his first-class career averages of 21.83 with the bat and 38.47 with the ball are not imposing, Jordan was once considered among Surrey’s most promising talents and his presence will help bolster a Sussex pace attack that relied heavily on Steve Magoffin in 2012.”I am delighted to be joining such a fantastic club,” Jordan said. “As soon as Sussex expressed an interest in me it became clear it would be an exceptional place to continue my cricketing development. Meeting with Mark Robinson and Mark Davis and looking around the club further confirmed that the set up at Sussex is perfectly suited to helping me achieve my career goals and ambitions of becoming a top class all-round cricketer.”I hope to play a key role in helping Sussex challenge for honours in all three formats in 2013, and I look forward to joining the boys for pre-season and pushing for a place in the starting XI for the first game of the season.”Jordan will hope to revive his career on the south coast, where he will join his former Surrey captain, Rory Hamilton-Brown. Both left Surrey after a turbulent season, which was overshadowed by the death of Tom Maynard.Mark Robinson, Sussex’s cricket manager, said: “Chris has got enormous potential. He can bowl genuinely quick and has the ability to be able to bat at No. 6 or No. 7, and is a natural athlete in the field. As yet, he hasn’t been able to find the consistency needed to fulfil his potential. He is still young and we hope we can help Chris fulfil this rich promise and become not only a match-winner at Sussex but also for England.”

Massiah back as USA captain for WCL Division 4

Steve Massiah, who was arrested in connection for fraud last year, has been recalled by the USA for the ICC World Cricket League Division Four competition in Malaysia

Peter Della Penna06-Aug-2012Steve Massiah, who missed the World Twenty20 Qualifier in March after a legal battle starting late in 2011 forced him to surrender his passport to US federal authorities, has received a USA recall. Massiah was named captain once again, in the 14-man USA squad selected for the ICC World Cricket League Division Four that will be played in Malaysia from September 3-10.Massiah, 33, was arrested in November along with two other men in connection with an alleged $50 million dollar mortgage fraud scheme run by New York real estate broker Ed Ahmad. Massiah’s arrest warrant was issued for allegedly defrauding banks and mortgage companies by falsifying mortgage loan applications. Such charges could have carried a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison, and bail for Massiah was set at $150,000. His travel was restricted to New York, although he received special permission to play at a cricket tournament in Florida in December.USA squad for WCL Division 4

Court documents show that Massiah’s attorney was engaged in plea negotiations for at least three months. Massiah was never indicted and the federal complaint against him and his two co-defendants was eventually dismissed on March 19. Sources claim that attorneys for the three men completed a plea deal to avoid trial and potential jail time. With Massiah’s case resolved, it opened the door for his return to the national team. According to sources, a USA Cricket Association board meeting was held last month to discuss whether or not he should be named captain again. The decision was made to restore him to the position, which had been filled by Sushil Nadkarni in March at the Twenty20 Qualifier in the UAE. Nadkarni, 36, will serve as the vice-captain on the tour to Malaysia. Also returning to the squad are three other veterans who have missed recent tournaments either due to work obligations or injury – Timroy Allen, Rashard Marshall and Aditya Thyagarajan. Most notable among them is Thyagarajan, USA’s leading run-scorer in 2010. Thyagarajan, 33, has not played for USA since January 2011 when he suffered a severe right knee dislocation against Denmark at ICC World Cricket League Division Three in Hong Kong. After a lengthy rehabilitation process, he has finally been declared fit to come back to the national team. The return of such key veterans, particularly in the batting department, will be vital for USA in an evenly-matched tournament field that includes Denmark, Malaysia, Nepal, Singapore and Tanzania. The competition in Malaysia may actually prove to be more grueling than what lies ahead in Division Three. The top two finishers from Division Four will be promoted to join Bermuda, Italy, Oman and Uganda in Division Three, which is scheduled to take place in Bermuda from April 28-May 5, 2013, according to a USACA press release.Wicketkeeper Akeem Dodson is the other player earning a recall after missing out on selection for the Twenty20 Qualifier when USA opted to hand a new cap to Nauman Mustafa, 37, behind the stumps rather than persist with the still developing Dodson, 24. However, Mustafa was stripped of the keeping duties one match into the tournament after a disastrous debut against Uganda. He was given an opportunity to atone later in the event but he never lived up to his domestic reputation with the bat, was sloppy with the gloves and as a result has been axed. Adil Bhatti, Asif Khan, Andy Mohammed, Japen Patel and Gowkaran Roopnarine are the others who have been dropped.Dodson is one of five players in the squad to have represented USA at an ICC U-19 World Cup and is also one of two America-born players in the squad along with Steven Taylor, 18. Taylor was impressive for USA on the tour to the UAE in March. He scored 40 off 30 balls in USA’s seven-wicket upset win over Scotland and finished second on the runs charts behind Nadkarni at the Twenty20 Qualifier.

Morgan blazes 49-ball century

Eoin Morgan sent a timely reminder to the England selectors by hitting the fastest century of the season as Middlesex crushed Lancashire by 167 runs at Lord’s.

10-Jun-2012ScorecardEoin Morgan will hope to return to international cricket in England’s ODI series against West Indies•AFPEoin Morgan sent a timely reminder to the England selectors by hitting the fastest century of the season as Middlesex crushed Lancashire by 167 runs at Lord’s.Morgan, who struggled in both Tests and one-day internationals during the winter, showed that he is back to his audacious best by reaching his hundred off only 49 balls, 17 fewer than the previous quickest by Durham’s Phil Mustard against Nottinghamshire last Sunday. He went on to make 116 off 54 balls with 11 sixes and six fours and, with Paul Stirling, Morgan’s fellow Irishman, making a rapid century of his own as Middlesex ran up a total of 350 for 6, their highest in one-day cricket. It was always going to be too many for Lancashire who slumped to 55 for 5 before Paul Horton’s defiant 49 enabled them to reach 183.The stage had been set for Morgan by a second wicket partnership of 142 in 20 overs between Stirling and Joe Denly, who had made 58 off 57 balls with six fours and a six when he sliced Gary Keedy to backward point. It was not long before Stirling completed his century off 84 balls and he had scored 119 off 99 balls with five sixes and 12 fours when Keedy had him caught at square leg off a top-edged sweep but he was to be upstaged by Morgan in a third wicket stand of 126 in only 11 overs.A scoreboard showing 168 for 2, a short boundary on the Tavern side of the ground and a Lancashire attack containing three left arm spinners could not have been more inviting for the Morgan. He had scored only 66 runs in four one-day internationals for England and did not get a game for Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League. But ahead of the naming tomorrow of England’s squad to face the West Indies he was back to his best.He impudently reverse-swept his first ball from Keedy for four, straight drove Ajmal Shahzad for his first six soon afterwards and then began peppering the Mound and Tavern Stands with a fusillade of sixes which had spectators ducking for cover. One of them off Sajid Mahmood took him to his first century for Middlesex in any form of cricket since 2009 and he was trying to clear the boundary again when he was caught at wide long on off Keedy, who emerged from the onslaught with the exemplary figures of 5 for 55.

Ireland edge Italy in low-scoring encounter

The eclectic talents of Italy almost caused a major upset in Abu Dhabi, as Ireland squeezed home by two wickets with two balls to spare

The Report by Ger Siggins in Abu Dhabi15-Mar-2012
ScorecardGary Wilson’s composed innings ensured Ireland didn’t suffer a second upset in three games•Barry Chambers/International Cricket Council

The eclectic talents of Italy almost caused a major upset at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi, running Ireland to the final couple of deliveries.Italy rely heavily on players of Italian heritage – rather than those born in the country – and were a match for Ireland until the very last over. Italy’s batting was below par, barely scraping past 100, but the slow bowling and fielding ensured a tight finish for Phil Simmons’ men. In the end the margin was two wickets with just two balls to spare as Gary Wilson kept his head in a tense finale. The left-arm spin of Damian Crowley was almost Ireland’s undoing as the Nottinghamshire 2nd XI player took 3 for 12 off four magical overs.Gary Wilson admitted it had been a “smash and grab” win for Ireland. “All we can take from the game are the two points – and run,” he said. “Two or three guys got starts and didn’t go on so we wouldn’t have been in that position if one of them did.”William Porterfield was even more critical of his batsmen. “We made it hard for ourselves in the middle order with a couple of soft dismissals,” he said.Italy won the toss and batted on a slow surface. The Irish fielding was its usual tigerish self and the Italians struggled to get on top of disciplined bowling. Ireland kept the boundary count down once again, conceding just three fours and a pair of late sixes clouted by captain Alessandro Bonora.Ireland offspinner Paul Stirling was given the new ball and responded with two immaculate overs costing just one run, as well as picking up the scalp of Andy Northcote. There was also the novel sight of a 37-year-old New South Welshman bowling to a 38-year-old Tasmanian. Trent Johnston won that contest, bowling a maiden first up, but Michael Di Venuto played a backbone role to top score with 23 off 44 balls as wickets fell around him. After five overs Italy had made just 16, and the half way score of 39 for 2 was no platform for expansion. Middlesex allrounder Gareth Berg stuck around for 19 before he played an awful shot to square leg to give his club mate Stirling a second wicket.Berg and Di Venuto had taken the score to 55 but the Italians lost five wickets for 22 runs as first the spinners cashed in and then Boyd Rankin returned. The 6ft 8in paceman had recorded a T20 career best the day before, and improved on that with two lethal deliveries to send Crowley and Hayden Patrizi back to the pavilion. The Warwickshire bowler has concentrated on bowling at the stumps and was rewarded by seeing the poles cartwheel twice in a fiery second spell.Max Sorensen, who came in for Andrew White, was entrusted with the 18th and 20th overs, and picked up Carl Sandri to a catch in the deep. Bonora took the total into three figures when he just cleared the fielder on the square-leg rope.”If it ain’t broke don’t fix it,” they say, but Ireland failed to heed that old saw and separated the pairing of Stirling and William Porterfield that saw them to a ten-wicket win over Kenya. Kevin O’Brien was promoted and carved the first ball to the third-man boundary but perished to the first delivery of the second over, bowled by Carl Sandri. The Melbourne-born offspinner has been in fine form in the tournament and picked up two more scalps to take his total to eight.Porterfield and Stirling put on 25 before the Italians found their range and the Middlesex man edged behind to Patrizi. Ireland then made heavy weather of getting the runs as the middle order departed in a flurry.Crowley caused all sorts of problems as Ireland almost became unstuck.A fantastic piece of fielding by Di Venuto saw John Mooney depart to a direct hit and Ireland were confronted with the serious possibility of an early departure from a tournament they were expected to win.As the tension mounted the cool head of wicketkeeper Wilson was required and he tapped judicious singles before taking on Northcote in the final over. With eight wickets down Ireland still needed seven off five balls, but a reverse sweep reached the fence, followed by a two and a clubbed straight hit to leave Wilson unbeaten on 30 and Ireland joining Italy on two wins out of three.Edited by Alan Gardner
