Kallis rested for England ODIs

South Africa have given the clearest indication yet that Jacques Kallis will form part of their World Twenty20 plans by resting him for the ODI series against England. Kallis has not played T20I cricket for South Africa since the 2010 World Twenty20, apart from a one-off game against India in his honour in March, but was named in a 30-man provisional squad for Sri Lanka last week. His place in the 15-man party for the five-match ODI series with England will be taken by the uncapped allrounder Dean Elgar. He was named in South Africa’s squad to face Sri Lanka in January, before torn knee ligaments prevented him from making an international debut.Imran Tahir, whose last ODI appearance came in the 2011 World Cup, is recalled, while the seamer Ryan McLaren, who played the last of his 10 ODIs in 2010, also returns after recovering from a side strain sustained while playing for South Africa A earlier in the month. Wayne Parnell remains in the squad despite allegedly testing positive for drugs after a rave party in Mumbai in May following his IPL commitments.”Dean has been in our plans for some time and might well have made his debut last year but for injury,” CSA selection convener, Andrew Hudson, said. “Imran is a genuine wicket-taking bowler and his selection enables us to explore our options in this area.”Ryan has just come off some exceptional form for the South Africa A side and the added depth he provides in the seam bowling department will allow us to rotate players if we feel the need arises.”Parnell, Faf du Plessis, Justin Ontong, Elgar and McLaren are due to travel to Ireland with South Africa A for two four-day matches and an unofficial ODI, before joining the rest of the squad in England. South Africa will name their squad for the Twenty20 international series against England, as well as the World Twenty20, in August.South Africa squad AB de Villiers (capt), Hashim Amla (vice-capt), JP Duminy, Faf du Plessis, Dean Elgar, Imran Tahir, Ryan McLaren, Albie Morkel, Morne Morkel, Justin Ontong, Wayne Parnell, Robin Peterson, Graeme Smith, Dale Steyn, Lonwabo Tsotsobe

Hesson's Kenyan baptism of fire

Mike Hesson, who took over as Kenya’s coach in July, has told the Otago Times that he arrived to find players in dispute with the board

ESPNcricinfo staff29-Nov-2011Mike Hesson, who took over as Kenya’s coach in July, has told the Otago Times that he arrived to find players in dispute with the board and that his first role was to act as a mediator between the two factions.Hesson quit after six years as coach of Otago and moved his family to Nairobi to take up the two-year contract. He was in no doubt as to the challenge ahead of him after Kenya’s dismal performance at the World Cup.”We had eight players on strike seeking better pay and work conditions, including most of our fast bowlers,” he said. “After a brief settling-in period I ended up acting as a go-between for the board and players. It meant trying to master Swahili fairly fast. I understand more than I speak but I’m getting the hang of it.”Basically the players weren’t getting the greatest of advice. There are lots of issues here based on tribal loyalty. You respect what your elders tell you out of blind faith.”Hesson said the situation had now been resolved and that the 18 fully-contracted players “who live well by African standards; they’re probably in the top half of earners in the country”.He had already seen what he has to work with on matches with Namibia and Zimbabwe and is now focussing on next year’s World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka with two spots up for grabs for Associates.

How the AGM works

What kind of structure does the BCCI have? The BCCI is a non-profit society and was registered under the Tamil Nadu Societies Registration Act in 1928. Its members comprise the various state cricket associations. There are 30 members in all. What are the various official positions on the board? There are nine official positions on the board: president, honorary secretary, honorary joint-secretary, treasurer and five vice-presidents, one from each zone of India. All nine positions are unpaid. In 2006, the board created its first paid position, that of chief administrative officer. Are there term limits for the various positions?According to the BCCI constitution, the term limit is three years and those elected can only hold a position once. For example, Shashank Manohar, the outgoing president, is not eligible to run for president of the board again. However, vice-presidents can be re-elected for more than one term. How are candidates nominated for the various positions?Candidates who wish to contest the elections only need to be proposed and seconded by members who are eligible to attend and vote at the AGM. However, typically a candidate will not proceed unless he has been endorsed his state association. Most of the time, nominees are chosen by consensus, especially those representing a particular zone, although there have been contentious elections as well, most recently in 2005 when the Supreme Court of India intervened to make sure the elections were fair.Who votes at the Annual General Meeting? Each member association authorises a person to represent it at the meeting. The authorisation must be sent to the BCCI prior to the meeting. That person then votes on behalf of his member association. What else happens at the Annual General Meeting?Aside from handling routine procedures such as the approval of accounts and minutes of previous meetings, the BCCI also appoints its various sub-committees for a year at a time. So at each AGM the committees are reconstituted. The most powerful committee is the working committee, by which most decisions of the board are taken. These decisions are then ratified at the AGM. There are 23 committees in all, including the IPL governing council committee and the various selection committees. The committee appointments are generally made on the second day of the meeting.

Mike Hesson appointed Kenya coach

Mike Hesson, the former Otago Volts and New Zealand A coach, has been appointed the new coach of the Kenyan team for a two-year term. Hesson, 36, will fill the position vacated by Eldine Baptiste, who had stepped down after Kenya’s poor 2011 World Cup campaign.Cricket Kenya had conducted a performance review after the World Cup and chief executive Tom Sears had said there would be an extensive recruitment process to find a new coach. The result of that search was Hesson, who has been involved with coaching in Otago since 1996.Kenya lost all six group matches during the World Cup and a complete shake-up of the team followed, with captain Jimmy Kamande being sacked and several senior players missing out on central contracts, in addition to Baptiste’s resignation. They then lost six out of nine matches in the ICC Africa Region Division One Twenty20, albeit with a very young side.Hesson joins Kenya after a six-year spell as coach of Otago Volts, during which the team won the State Shield, the domestic 50-over competition in 2007-08 and the State Twenty20 in 2008-09. Hesson also coached New Zealand A, the New Zealand Emerging Players squad and spent time with Gloucestershire as an assistant coach. His first assignment with Kenya will be to prepare the side for the upcoming Intercontinental Cup matches against United Arab Emirates that start on July 25 in Nairobi. Kenya will play UAE in two one-day matches and a four-day game.”Mike has an excellent record of developing players and successful teams, and throughout the selection process [he] demonstrated a real desire and clear vision to take our national team forward,” Sears said. “As well as being a highly-skilled technical coach, he is an excellent communicator, something crucial to the role.”Hesson said he was attracted to the job by the clear drive Cricket Kenya had to revive the national team after recent disappointments. “Having spoken with Cricket Kenya’s key stakeholders during the selection process I was stimulated by the passion shown to drive Kenyan cricket forward. I am very much looking forward to this exciting new opportunity and working with the undoubted talent there is within Kenya.”

Here come the reinforcements

Australia’s limited-overs tour of Bangladesh means most IPL teams will receive valuable reinforcements two matches into the competition

Daniel Brettig14-Apr-2011

Rajasthan Royals’ Shane Watson used the preceding ODI series against Bangladesh to find his range with the bat•Indian Premier League

Australia’s limited-overs tour of Bangladesh deprived the IPL of a handful of its brightest stars at the start of the tournament. However now most franchises will receive valuable reinforcements, two matches into the competition. Some, like Shane Watson, have brought themselves to peak explosiveness during the week in Dhaka. Others, like Cameron White, will hope the change of colours brings a change of fortunes.Shane Watson (Rajasthan Royals): If Rajasthan needed any more reminders of Watson’s value, a record tally of 15 sixes in an ODI duly arrived in boldface type during the Bangladesh series. Having been as much a part of Rajasthan’s development as Shane Warne, Watson enthuses over the IPL as much as any Australia player, and seemed to use the preceding ODI series as a chance to find his range with the bat.Brad Haddin (Kolkata Knight Riders): A debutant in the IPL, Haddin’s recent knack for flashy starts will be useful if he is squeezed into the Kolkata top order. Less attractive are his two low scores against Bangladesh and a wicketkeeping technique that has seldom adapted well to the subcontinent’s low bounce, meaning Haddin has a task ahead of him to provide genuine allrounder value to his franchise.Michael Hussey (Chennai Super Kings): Having been a key player in Chennai’s success in 2010 (both in the IPL and Champions League), Hussey was nonetheless miffed about being forced to stay with his franchise until the conclusion of the Champions League, rather than preparing for a Test series in India. With a pair of handy scores against Bangladesh to his name, Hussey appears in decent touch, and has avoided a relapse of the hamstring tear that almost kept him out of the World Cup.Callum Ferguson (Pune Warriors): Ferguson has visited India numerous times, most recently as the reserve batsman in the Australia World Cup squad. His two most recent innings, in a World Cup warm-up against India and the third limited-overs match against Bangladesh, did not suggest subcontinental comfort however. He will need to find the right mindset for his time in the middle, after countless hours in the nets in between.Cameron White (Deccan Chargers): A six-month struggle with the bat in the Australia ODI side eventually saw White left out of the XI after the first match against Bangladesh. And coach Tim Nielsen’s view that he was not hitting the ball as hard as he should, would not make for pleasant reading at Deccan. However the time constraints of Twenty20 may be White’s best path back to his big-hitting best, removing the mental barrier often created by having balls to spare.Tim Paine (Pune): A neat batsman and tidy gloveman, Paine is among the most technically correct of Australia’s young crop, and showcased his fierce determination during the 2010 Test series in India. He has gradually developed an ability to switch between the power-hitting mode of T20 and the poise required for longer formats, a quality that will aid his performance as much as blond locks push his marketability.Shakib Al Hasan (Kolkata): Shakib bowled tightly against a rampant Australia batting line-up but found momentum less easy to come by with the bat, while juggling the captaincy of a team that looked a little lost after the World Cup. Still ranked the world’s leading limited-overs allrounder – at least until Watson overtook him with his stunning efforts in Dhaka – Shakib’s spin should prove awkward to manoeuvre at Eden Gardens.John Hastings (Kochi): A hat-trick in Australia’s warm-up match at Fatullah was perhaps the highlight of Hastings’ tour of Bangladesh. He was frugal in the ODIs, but without the same success. A modest batting record for Australia does not quite convey the skill and hitting-power contained within his 6’5” frame.Brett Lee (Kolkata): Lee’s best moments on a cricket field in India arrived during the Champions League in 2009, when he guided New South Wales to victory and was named Player of the Tournament. He will hope to be similarly influential with the consistently under-performing Kolkata, needing to mentor a bowling attack that lags behind the franchise’s batting in both experience and accomplishment.James Pattinson (Kolkata): Likened to Peter Siddle, but with a little more swing and subtlety, Pattinson made his international debut in the third match against Bangladesh. He is likely to form a decent pace partnership with Lee, and can prosper if he maintains spotless lengths and lines.

Newcastle must unleash Fabian Schar

Newcastle United will be looking to extend their winning run to five matches in the Premier League as they host Liverpool at St James’ Park this afternoon.

The Magpies face off against the Reds as Jurgen Klopp’s team are battling with Manchester City to land the title this season.

It will be a difficult match for Eddie Howe’s men but they head into the game off the back of wins over Norwich, Crystal Palace, Leicester and Wolves.

Despite that fine run, one change that the 44-year-old must make from their last outing, a 3-0 win against the Canaries, is to bring Fabian Schar back into the starting XI.

Howe must unleash Schar

The centre-back, who signed a fresh two-year contract earlier this week, was rested at Carrow Road after 14 straight top-flight starts leading up to the game in Norfolk. Newcastle picked up a whopping 29 points from those 14 matches, which shows how important the Swiss defender has been to the club in 2022, as he has played a key role in their resurgence.

Toon legend Alan Shearer previously hailed him as “commanding” and a “danger” going forward in 2019. The 30-year-old was also dubbed “absolutely outstanding” by journalist Dominic Scurr earlier this year, with these comments illustrating how well he has performed over the years.

Upon the announcement of the defender’s new contract, Howe heaped praise on the Swiss hulk as he said: “I’ve been delighted with Fabian’s form. He is the ultimate professional and a hugely important player in our dressing room.

“I’m delighted he has committed himself to the club. He is very driven for future success and I’m pleased he will be a part of our future.”

This shows how highly the head coach rates the £40k-per-week defender, and Schar’s statistics this year prove that he is deserving of such applause.

He averaged SofaScore ratings of 7.2, 7.3 and 6.9 throughout January, February and March respectively and is currently averaging a score of 7.2 in April. This means that he is roughly averaging a score of 7.15 in the Premier League in 2022, consistently delivering excellent displays at centre-back.

For context, Bruno Guimaraes (7.25) is the only Newcastle player with more than five appearances this term to average a higher rating in the top flight for the club. Schar has established himself as one of Howe’s key players and he must be brought back into the team for a big clash with a Liverpool side which has only lost two games in the entire league campaign.
