Positive IPL news for Pakistan – Butt

Ijaz Butt, the former PCB chairman, has said that BCCI president and IPL chairman Rajiv Shukla has assured him that the Pakistan players will be readmitted into the IPL. Butt had met Shukla and former BCCI president Sharad Pawar last week in Delhi, in a meeting sanctioned by the PCB.Butt had then briefed current Pakistan board chief Zaka Ashraf about the discussions at the Delhi meeting, as well as on all the past communications he had had with the BCCI during his three-year tenure as board chief that ended last October. The briefing was organised in view of Zaka Ashraf travelling to India on Saturday, for the IPL final in Chennai on Sunday.”With the consent of the incumbent PCB chairman Zaka Ashraf, I met Rajiv Shukla and Sharad Pawar, and discussed the progress on the Indo-Pak cricketing relations,” Butt told the . “In Delhi, Rajiv Shukla assured me that Pakistani players will be allowed to play in the next [2013] IPL edition.”During Butt’s tenure, the relationship between Pakistan and India hit a low following the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks. Following those attacks, bilateral ties between the neighbours were severed, and Pakistan players have not been a part of the IPL since. Also, a team from Pakistan was not invited to participate in the Champions League Twenty20 (CLT20). Earlier this month, progress was made on last point, with the BCCI – the CLT20’s largest stakeholder – saying it would inform the tournament’s governing council that it had no objection to a team from Pakistan participating. Later, Ashraf was invited to watch the IPL final by the BCCI.”Both Rajiv and Pawar are my very good friends, and we are on good terms for a long time,” Butt told ESPNcricinfo. “I, during my tenure [as PCB chief], was for the resumption of dialogues with the BCCI. There were some differences though, which I don’t want to share or comment on, but in the end I had to try to have good relations with everyone.”I have had a good meeting with Zaka during which we discussed a lot of aspects, and I have updated him on my talk with the BCCI officials. From what I can see, there is improvement at the government level and both countries are coming closer. So now it’s up to both boards, they should engage in healthy dialogues to revive bilateral ties.”Ashraf before flying to India, spoke to the media, said he is hopeful of a fruitful visit. “Their invitation [to the IPL final] is a strong clue that both countries are moving towards having good relations,” Ashraf told reporters at the Lahore airport. “This is rare, in the past no such invitation was extended. So I am hopeful that I will have a good meeting with the BCCI officials on the sidelines of the IPL final regarding the revival of bilateral ties.”

Matsikenyeri back for New Zealand tour

Top-order batsman Stuart Matsikenyeri has made a comeback to the Zimbabwe squad for their upcoming tour of New Zealand

Brendan Taylor (capt), Regis Chakabva, Elton Chigumbura, Graeme Cremer (Test only), Kyle Jarvis, Hamilton Masakadza, Shingirai Masakadza, Stuart Matsikenyeri, Tinotenda Mawoyo, Keegan Meth, Forster Mutizwa, Raymond Price, Tatenda Taibu (wk), Prosper Utseya (limited-overs only), Brian Vitori, Malcolm Waller

Top-order batsman Stuart Matsikenyeri has made a comeback to the Zimbabwe squad for their upcoming tour of New Zealand. Vusi Sibanda missed out since he was ineligible for selection, after declining a domestic contract in favour of playing grade cricket in Australia. There were no other surprises in the 16-member side that will be led by Brendan Taylor.Matsikenyeri played the last of his 108 ODIs in March 2010 before being dropped from the side. He has had a good run of form for the Mashonaland Eagles in domestic cricket, which helped him force his way back into the national squad. “Stuart Matsikenyeri has earned a recall into the national squad as he has done very well in the domestic competitions and is one of the few batsmen who has been consistent,” Givemore Makoni, convener of selectors, said. “He is an experienced and aggressive player.”Zimbabwe Cricket’s eligibility policy for selection provides for exceptions in the case of one-off tournaments abroad in which case a no-objection certificate is issued, such as the one given to Taylor for his foreign assignments. Sibanda, unlike Taylor, declined a ZC contract, which ruled him out of contention.Legspinner Graeme Cremer finds a place in the Test side, but will make way for Prosper Utseya ahead of the limited-overs leg of the tour. The series will comprise a one-off Test starting January 26, followed by three ODIs and two Twenty20s.

'We played good cricket today' – Shakib

Shakib Al Hasan has said although the conditions in Bulawayo were more to Bangladesh’s liking, it was a good performance that led to their first victory of the tour

ESPNcricinfo staff19-Aug-2011

Bangladesh’s win was their fifth at the Queens Sports Club•Zimbabwe Cricket

A change of venue brought a change of luck for Bangladesh as they picked up their first win of the tour, at the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo. It was their fifth win in seven completed matches at the ground, but their captain Shakib Al Hasan played down the role of the conditions, saying it was a good performance that brought the change in fortune.”I think this suits us more than the Harare ground,” Shakib said. “The wicket had some spin, enough for our bowlers to do something. I don’t think we always win here because it suits us; we played good cricket today. The spinners were steady and Rubel [Hossain] bowled brilliantly. Today all the three parts clicked, though we can still improve our game and be more consistent.”Bangladesh came into the ODI series as favourites, having dominated Zimbabwe in recent years – they had won the last six bilateral ODI series between the two countries before this one. Shakib admitted that now that they had lost the series there was less pressure, which helped, but pointed to the team’s lack of cricket in recent months as one of the main reasons for the 3-1 scoreline in favour of Zimbabwe. Before this tour Bangladesh had not played since April, and apart from Shakib, who played in the IPL and then for Worcestershire, and Tamim Iqbal, who played for Nottinghamshire in the Friends life T20, the rest of the Bangladesh players have not had much cricket since then.”There was individual pressure on players; plus we haven’t played competitive cricket for three months, except for me and Tamim,” Shakib said. “It was difficult to adjust for the others. I and Tamim had the mindset, but the rest felt some pressure. If we could have adjusted a bit earlier, it would have helped.”Though the win will not affect the series result, Shakib said there were positives to take from it, and was particularly happy with the new players in the Bangladesh team. Nasir Hossain and Shuvagoto Hom have both made impressive starts to their careers, and Shuvagoto helped steer Bangladesh to victory today in the company of Shakib. “I am very satisfied with them. The way Shuvagoto batted, I really liked it. It didn’t seem as if he was someone new to international cricket.”I still think we should have finished today’s game better. We needed 70-odd and we had lost four wickets. If I had got out suddenly, there would have been a lot of pressure on the new batsmen. Senior players should take the responsibility of finishing the game. But I liked the way our top-order batsmen showed a positive mindset, something that we wanted from the beginning. We still have one more game to go and if we can finish that on a high note, there’ll be some positives we can take back home.”Alan Butcher, Zimbabwe’s coach, said his side had not become complacent and were determined to stop Bangladesh from winning the last game, on August 21 in Bulawayo.”We spoke a lot about not getting complacent because we have already won the series,” Butcher said. “We wanted to win the series 5-0. But on the day we’ve played poorly and Bangladesh deserve to win. We had a good wicket to bat on and ended up 60-80 runs short of a competitive target. There were soft dismissals, a silly run-out and a collapse at the end. Apart from [Brendan] Taylor, who was excellent, the rest of the batting was ordinary.”Zimbabwe were without their star bowler of this tour, Brian Vitori, in Bulawayo because of an injury, but Butcher said he could be back for the last game.”Vitori was having problems with his calf muscle during the last game in Harare so we decided it was better to rest him before it got worse. Hopefully he’ll be ready for Sunday. But we won’t play him if he’s not 100% fit.”Butcher said he was aware Bangladesh were improving as the series went on but said the defeat was more due to their own mistakes. “We saw in the last game in Harare that Bangladesh were improving, but we expected more of ourselves than what we produced today. We need to turn that around on Sunday.”

Middlesex cruise past the Dutch

ScorecardMiddlesex strolled to a seven-wicket win over Middlesex with fully 17 overs to spare in their Clydesdale Bank 40 Group A clash with Netherlands at Deventer. The home side crumbled to 104 all out in 32.4 overs despite Michael Swart’s 57, Corey Collymore and Steven Finn taking three wickets apiece. A stand of 59 between Paul Stirling and Chris Rogers then made Middlesex’s victory a formality.Visiting captain Neil Dexter won the toss at Sportpark Het Schootsveld and invited the Dutch to bat first, and Collymore was unplayable from the outside. The West Indian began with a double-wicket maiden, with Eric Swarczynski skying a catch to Stirling from the fourth ball and opening partner Wesley Barresi following from the sixth.Tom Cooper became Collymore’s third wicket (3 for 17) when he edged the last ball of the ninth over to wicketkeeper John Simpson but Swart and Tom Heggelman then put on 62. They fell within three balls of each other with the score on 87, Swart bowled by England international Finn before Ollie Rayner removed Heggelman for eight. There was little further resistance, with captain Peter Borren’s 11 the only other double-figure score as Finn removed Tom de Grooth and Mudassar Bukhari to finish with 3 for 26.Scott Newman and Dawid Malan made a steady start to the reply with a stand of 30 in nine overs before both fell in successive Shane Mott overs, the Australian taking 2 for 30. Rogers made 32 from 34 balls before he was removed by Heggelman, whose two overs yielded one for 20.Stirling remained unbeaten on 39, made from 37 balls with six fours, while Dexter was two not out.

Alex McLeish hails Carl Stafelt improvement

Former Scotland manager Alex McLeish has been left hugely impressed with Carl Starfelt’s improvement in form for Celtic this season, hailing his work behind the scenes with Ange Postecoglou.

The Lowdown: Starfelt superb for Hoops

The Hoops are on the verge of sealing Scottish Premiership glory, with numerous players starring for Postecoglou’s side throughout the campaign.

Starfelt has undoubtedly been one of them, starting 31 league matches and averaging a 90.8% pass completion rate and winning 4.4 aerial duels per game.

The Swede’s current deal expires in the summer of 2025, and considering he is still only 26, he could prove to be a long-term player for Celtic after an initial shaky start.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/key-latest-celtic-updates-5/” title=”Key latest Celtic updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: McLeish hails defender

Speaking to Football Insider, McLeish heaped praise on Starfelt’s brilliance and the work he has done with Postecoglou in training, having improved his all-round form hugely:

“The manager has seen the guy every day. I imagine they have been doing some individual stuff, some video stuff.

“The manager will have known what Starfelt is capable of before he joined Celtic. There was a few Celtic players at the start of the season who weren’t at the level.

“Carter-Vickers is one. Starfelt, after a very shaky start, he has blossomed. It’s a credit to the manager and the coaches but it also shows the player has the bottle to play for these teams.”

The Verdict: Key man for years to come

Starfelt deserves all the accolades he receives this season, having been such an influential part of a defence that has conceded just 21 goals in 36 league outings in 2021/22.

He and Cameron Carter-Vickers has formed a wonderful understanding alongside one another and the hope is that they continue to provide the backbone of the team for many years.

Starfelt hasn’t done his job yet, though, and it is vital that he carries on performing at his current level in the final two league games of the season, becoming a Scottish champion in his first year at Parkhead.

Cricket Kenya pushes ahead with elite league

Cricket Kenya chief executive Tom Sears has told ESPNcricinfo that plans are progressing to introduce a new national tournament in the country

Martin Williamson10-Jan-2011Cricket Kenya chief executive Tom Sears has told ESPNcricinfo that plans are progressing to introduce a new national tournament in the country with the aim of improving the domestic structure and helping bridge the current gulf between the local and international game.At present, the Nairobi Provincial Cricket League is the country’s main competition, but standards are widely regarded as being poor and not conducive to bringing on young players. An attempt by CK to start a provincial event in 2009 failed for a variety of reasons, but Sears believes now is the time to try again.”That was a senior men’s competition, this is a junior competition and is different,” he explained. “This proposal will be put forward to the board and discussed at our next meeting.”We are looking at basing it around a club structure primarily in Nairobi. The plan is to have eight teams in two pools of four. Six would be Nairobi-based clubs and we would probably invite the top six teams from the Nairobi league and a combination side from the Rift and a combination side from the Coast … but this is just a proposal at the moment and has yet to be ratified. If it is, we would put the Coast and the Rift in opposite pools to limit the amount of travelling and the top two in each pool would go through in semi-finals and a final.”It’ll create an opportunity for our national players, best club players, and also we have a good clutch of Under-19s and Under-17s and it will give them the chance to play in good, hard cricket because the standard of league cricket here is just not good enough at the moment.”Sears wants this to start in 2010, and unlike other attempts, this will spread right down through the age groups and into the vital area of schools cricket.”It’s about development all the way up, particularly at schools level. At the moment you can have a 12 year-old kid in Nairobi playing a completely different format of the game to a 12 year-old in Nakuru, Mombasa or anywhere else. So what we are trying to do is standardise the format of cricket we are playing at various age groups and have a regional competition that feeds into regional teams that compete in a national competition. This will create opportunities for kids to play locally and the best of those will be creamed off into regional teams at all the age groups up until 17.

If the ICC stipulate that this is a kind of structure they want to have in place, it adds a lot of weight to it

“And then four regions, which will possibly be a Coast, Rift and two Nairobi sides who will compete in a national competition. We are making sure the kids can play and then we are looking at the best of those kids with a view to selecting those national sides. And once we have selected those national sides, making sure they are playing meaningful fixtures.”Funding remains a major obstacle, but Sears says CK is “in discussions with broadcasters who have verbally committed to televising some of it” as well as speaking to a variety of commercial partners.”We’ve got the ICCC, who provide the majority of our funding, onside and they are supportive of what we are trying to implement. If the ICC stipulate that this is a kind of structure they want to have in place, it adds a lot of weight to it. If we can’t do all of it, certainly the senior men’s league and some more structured junior competitions and that is what we have budgeted for.”Another issue historically has been the reluctance of clubs to agree to anything which dilutes their stranglehold on domestic cricket. “The provinces have their own leagues and place a lot of importance on them and that is fair enough,” Sears said. “But any board member who sits on the board of a governing body has to look at the good of the game nationally as opposed to their own locality. I am sure there will be some interesting discussions but we are looking to implement something from the middle of the year onwards.”

O’Keeffe drops Everton view on Gomes

Greg O’Keeffe has claimed that Andre Gomes is ‘awful’ in one area ahead of Everton taking on Manchester City in the Premier League on Saturday.

The Lowdown: Gomes’ Southampton nightmare

In the Toffees’ 2-0 loss at Southampton last weekend, it is safe to say that the midfielder had a nightmare.

A local Saints radio pundit (via Paul Brown) claimed that the 28-year-old was ‘poor’ and was ‘costing’ his team, even going as far as to say that he ‘couldn’t get any worse’.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/everton-news-2/” title=”Everton news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Gomes lost out on four of his duels in total that day and failed to record a single shot on target, dribble, clearance, interception or key pass, while he also lost possession of the ball 12 times, all in just 45 minutes on the pitch (SofaScore).

Therefore, his form will certainly be a worry ahead of the visit from the reigning Premier League champions this weekend.

The Latest: Gomes is ‘awful’ at stopping players

Taking to Twitter in sharing an article from The Athletic ahead of Saturday’s clash, O’Keeffe has claimed that Gomes is ‘awful’ at stopping players going past him.

The journalist also wrote that the Portugal international is not best suited to performing in a two-man midfield against strong opposition.

The Verdict: Start Doucoure instead

Even though Abdoulaye Doucoure has just resumed training, Frank Lampard should look to start the Frenchman instead of Gomes this weekend. given that the ex-Watford midfielder is in the squad,

The Euro 2016 winner needs to be taken out of the firing line, and no tougher test will come for Everton against champions and league leaders Man City.

Doucoure is much better suited to playing in a two in the middle of the park, as seen by the fact that he ranks highly among his team-mates in terms of tackles, shots, dribbles, passes and through balls per match (WhoScored), and the Toffees will surely need his overall quality if they are to take any points off Pep Guardiola’s side on Saturday.
