This week last year: Ganguly, Kumble, Dravid in England, more losses than gains?

It was this week last year that three Indian musketeers began theircampaign in England for various counties. Sourav Ganguly, the Indiancaptain, was plying his wares for Lancashire, Rahul Dravid was batting forKent and Anil Kumble was bamboozling batsmen with leg breaks forLeicestershire. The Karnataka leg spinner had previously played forNorthamptonshire but Ganguly and Dravid were making their debuts inEnglish domestic cricket. At the same time, it was not all smooth sailing for the trio. Just beforethey left for England, both Dravid and Kumble opted out of a crucial RanjiTrophy semi-final clash against Hyderabad. As it turned out, that proved tobe costly for Karnataka, who were edged out by the superior batting of aVVS Laxman-inspired Hyderabad. As a result of commitments to county cricket in England, the trio missedout on yet another important fixture of the Board of Control for Cricket inIndia. With India due to travel to Bangladesh for the Asia Cup featuringIndia, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, the preparatory camp for thetourney was underway. Although it would be far fetched to say that thishad a dramatic effect on the way India prepared, it must be remembered thatIndia lost quite badly at Dhaka. The county stint too proved to be less productive than people initiallyenvisaged it for at least one of the threesome. Ganguly, playing forLancashire, found that it was no stroll in the park. High scores ofteneluded the southpaw and the going was tough. With the ball swinging andseaming around, Ganguly could not simply hit his way out of a bad patch ashe may have done in the subcontinent. Add to this the run out troubleGanguly had and there was a disaster waiting to happen. When teammatesalleged that the Indian skipper was a bit of a ‘spoilt’ cricketer, drivingon his ownto venues and not taking the team bus, and extended the assessments tosimilar infringements, thingscame to a boil. On one occasion, when Ganguly scored a ton, there wasreportedly no one at the Lancashire balcony to cheer him on.For Kumble too, the second stint at county cricket might just havebeen a counter productive one in the long run. The 630.5 overs that hebowled would certainly have hastened, if not caused, the rotator cuffshoulder injury that has kept Kumble out of international cricket for morethan one series now. The doctor’s diagnosis on the injury is that he hasclearly sustained toomuch wear and tear. So, with the benefit of hindsight, one might just be cheeky enough tosuggest that a couple of key Indian cricketers’ experiment in playingcounty cricket in 2000 was an eminently avoidable one.

Leeds: Bielsa must unleash Summerville

After seeing him come off the bench to score twice against Burnley at the weekend, Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa will no doubt be very keen to see how Rodrigo fares if given the chance to start this evening at Southampton.

The Spaniard was outstanding in his cameo at Turf Moor, scoring twice off the bench, and the summer signing will be hoping to be rewarded with his first start in the Premier League since returning from injury.

However, with the season now reaching its climax, and Leeds having nothing much left to play for, it’s surely time for Bielsa to consider unleashing some of the club’s standout under-23 players, who recently clinched the Premier League 2 Division 2 title.

Top of that list would no doubt have been Joe Gelhardt, but he missed the under-23s’ final two games with injury, despite Mark Jackson insisting that it wouldn’t be too long before he returned.

However, in Crysencio Summerville, Bielsa could unleash one of Leeds’ hottest young prospects, with the Dutchman having been in scintillating form for the youth teams this season.

Described as a “bag of tricks” by Chris Powell – his former coach when he was a teenager at Dutch side ADO Den Haag – he scored a hat-trick against Burnley on just his second start for the under-23s earlier this campaign.

He has since bagged an impressive six goals and provided a further six assists in just 12 Premier League 2 games, including netting in the final game of the season.

The 19-year-old is an exciting winger who can play on either flank, and while he might be diminutive in stature at just 5 foot 9, he more than makes up for it with his quick feet and agility.

Summerville himself said earlier this year: “I often hear that there are doubts because of my physical condition, but when you are on the field, you are not concerned with that. There are often big defenders in front of me, I have to be smart about that. I know I’m agile and try to play with my mind.”

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Leeds transfer rumours and news!”]

While Rodrigo is the man of the moment and should be looking forward to a start tonight against the Saints at St Mary’s, Summerville will also be desperate to get his opportunity to shine, and a relatively low-stakes game like this could be the ideal setting for him to get his senior Whites debut.

Meanwhile, a journalist has dropped a major Leeds United update…

Yves Bissouma: Should Spurs sign him?

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly one of the teams keen on signing Yves Bissouma this summer…

What’s the word?

That’s according to the Daily Star, who claim the North London outfit have made inquiries but it appears their arch-rivals, Arsenal, are the front-runners to secure the Brighton and Hove Albion star.

The 24-year-old still has two years on his current contract at the Seagulls and is valued at around £30m.

Fellow Premier League sides Everton and West Ham United are also mooted with interest.

Imagine him & Hojbjerg

Spurs are currently managerless but any new appointment is set to have multiple midfield options at his disposal, ranging from summer signing Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg to the likes of Giovani Lo Celso, Dele Alli and Tanguy Ndombele.

But it is the Denmark international that has been a constant presence in the starting XI, playing every minute (3,060) of every league game this term – the only outfield player to do so.

Interestingly, Bissouma has exceeded the returns of Hojbjerg, who could be considered one of Spurs’ players of the season come the end of the campaign.

As per WhoScored, the Brighton midfielder has managed more tackles (2.8 vs 2.6), more interceptions (1.7 vs 1.3), and has committed fewer fouls (1.5 vs 1.8) per game in the Premier League than the £15m summer arrival.

And unlike Hojbjerg, he offers far more going forward, which means he could be the perfect foil rather than a direct replacement or alternative in that role.

His 1.2 shots per outing is a better return than every single Spurs player barring the obvious two in Heung-min Son (two) and Harry Kane (1.4), whilst he’s not quite at Ndombele’s dribbling ability, managing only 1.5 successful attempts per game, he is a hard man to dispossess, having averaged only 0.8 dispossessions compared to the Frenchman’s 1.1 times per game.

Dale Stephens, a former teammate of Bissouma’s on the south coast, gave a glowing review about this aspect of his game to reporters in 2019.

“He’s got the ability of perhaps a winger playing in central midfield with the way he can go past players,” revealed the Burnley midfielder. “His feet are incredible and I’m sure he’s going to get better and better. He’s got everything you need to be a top player.”

The Mali international has also been dubbed a “wonderful talent” by ex-Seagulls boss Chris Hughton and described as “very skilful” by his old Lille colleague Lebo Mothiba.

It remains to be seen if Daniel Levy can afford to stump up around £30m for anyone this summer but if he can, then it should absolutely be on a player of Bissouma’s calibre.

Just imagine him and Hojbjerg in the heart of the engine room.

That would surely be enough to tempt anyone into the managerial vacancy – maybe even a certain Graham Potter? Only time will tell.

AND in other news, Spurs set for huge boost as Hotspur Way news emerges, Levy and Mason will be buzzing…

Everton and Chelsea keen on Sarr

Everton are keen on signing Pape Matar Sarr, according to L’Equipe (via Sport Witness).

However, as per the news outlet, the Toffees face competition from Chelsea for the signature of the Metz talent. The report added that both Premier League clubs will have to move quickly if they wish to sign him, as Nice are already prepared to pay  €12m (£10.5m) to sign him in the summer transfer window.

Given that he is currently valued at £2.7m by Transfermarkt, that is nearly four times his value. The Merseyside club’s interest in Sarr would fit Marcel Brands’ model of signing young players and developing them for the future, but only time will tell whether Carlo Ancelotti’s team act on their reported interest.

Sarr one for the future

Sarr certainly seems a player for the future and, at just 18 years of age, he seemingly has a lot of potential to fulfil. He is already playing senior men’s football on a regular basis, having racked up 20 games in total for Metz so far this season (Transfermarkt).

A defensive midfield player from Senegal will sound very familiar to Toffees fans given their previous association with Idrissa Gueye, and if Sarr turns out to live up to the ability of the current Paris Saint-Germain ace, he would become a popular player very quickly for the Blues should they decide to sign him.

Crystal Palace: Fans slam van Aanholt

Plenty of Crystal Palace fans hit out at left-back Patrick van Aanholt on social media for his performance against Chelsea on Saturday evening.

The Eagles fell to a 4-1 defeat at home to Thomas Tuchel’s side, with Roy Hodgson’s men three goals down at the interval.

Van Aanholt made his 19th Premier League start of the season, but his performance didn’t sit well with some supporters online.

The 30-year-old, who is out of contract at the end of June, lost possession 18 times (third-most of any Palace player), failed to produce an accurate cross and lost five of his 10 duels. [SofaScore]

He has been offered a three-year deal by Turkish giants Galatasaray, who seem keen on securing his services on a free transfer ahead of the 2021/22 season – and it seems as if some fans would be happy for him to move on over the coming months based on his performance on Saturday.

Here is what these Palace supporters had to say about the Dutch defender’s display, with one irate fan describing it as ‘dreadful’.

West Ham fans livid over Rice claim

According to a report by 90min, as relayed by the Daily Express and shared on social media, West Ham United and Manchester United have discussed Jesse Lingard, Nemanja Matic and Phil Jones as possible makeweights in any proposed deal for Declan Rice.

Indeed, the Red Devils are apparently keen on the Irons star as a transfer target for the summer, with this trio of Old Trafford players entering the conversation as this murmur of a potential swap deal emerges.

Rice, who has been a mainstay under David Moyes this season and arguably West Ham’s best player, is currently out of action due to injury, but that hasn’t stopped transfer news from circulating over the Englishman.

As 90min drop this claim involving Matic, Jones and loan star Lingard, plenty of Irons have been livid over this alleged proposal – with one supporter blasting it as ‘unreal’.

While West Ham are reportedly eager to land Lingard on a permanent deal, the inclusion of Manchester United’s other two players has baffled many supporters – and it’s understandable given that Matic has started just 10 Premier League games while Jones hasn’t featured at all this season (WhoScored).

Here is a flavour of the Twitter reaction from the Irons faithful, with one describing the reports as “unreal”:

West Ham fans baffled by Rice claim

“Oh wow. Jones and Matic. You’re really spoiling us. They’d get at least 3 games combined per season.”

THFC: Spurs interested in Maignan swoop

According to recent reports, Tottenham Hotspur are interested in a summer move for Lille goalkeeper Mike Maignan.

So far this season, Maignan has highly impressed over his 30 Ligue 1 appearances for Christophe Galtier’s side, with the 25-year-old keeping 16 clean sheets and conceding just 19 goals, as well as averaging a SofaScore match rating of 7.03 – ranking him as the club’s sixth-best performer in the French top flight.

With Tottenham shot-stopper Hugo Lloris being heavily linked with a move away from north London this summer, L’Equipe (via Sport Witness) have recently claimed that Jose Mourinho could be keen on a move for Lloris’ French teammate, for whom Lille are reported to be asking for around €25m (£21.5m) to sell.

Transfer Tavern Take

While it would appear as if a move from Spurs for Maignan would depend on whether Lloris does indeed leave Tottenham this summer, the Lille ‘keeper would appear to already have admirers at Spurs in the shape of Joao Sacramento and Nuno Santos.

According to L’Equipe (via Sport Witness), Mourinho’s assistants – who both left Lille to join Spurs – believe that the £18m-rated Maignan has “enormous” potential. Sacramento is said to praise the ‘keeper often, while Santos is one of the 25-year-old’s “staunch supporters”, with both coaches reported to be encouraging Mourinho to move for the Frenchman this summer.

As a result, should Lloris depart Tottenham at the end of the season, it would not be a surprising turn of events to see Spurs make a more concrete approach for Maignan.

Patterson was poor in Rangers draw

Rangers played out a 1-1 draw with Slavia Prague at the Sinobo Stadium on Thursday evening and Steven Gerrard’s side will be confident that they can progress further in the Europa League by winning next week’s second leg at Ibrox.

Nicolae Stanciu gave the hosts an excellent start when he curled into the top corner after just seven minutes but Rangers fought back and equalised thanks to a scrappy goal from Filip Helander before half-time. Gerrard’s side were on top in the second half but had Allan McGregor to thank for securing a draw as the 39-year-old made an unbelievable save in the final few minutes to ensure that the teams finished level.

Although there were some excellent performances on show from Rangers, one man who struggled throughout the game was Nathan Patterson.

The 19-year-old continued his recent run in the side by starting in the Czech Republic, as captain James Tavernier is still sidelined through injury and Leon Balogun showed his vulnerabilities as a right-back in the previous round against Royal Antwerp.

However, he was tormented by the impressive Stanciu for much of the game, with SofaScore awarding the right-back a disappointing 6.4/10 rating for his performance, which was the worst of any Gers player who started the game.

Whilst the teenager made an impressive five clearances, three tackles and three interceptions during the game, the Slavia attackers regularly had the better of him down his side, as he was dribbled past as many as five times on Thursday evening.

For context, Filip Helander and Connor Goldson weren’t dribbled past at all, whilst left-back Borna Barisic was dribbled past just once, so it definitely seems like the home side targeted the young right-back and exploited his inexperience.

It was also arguably a poor display from the defender from a passing perspective, as he would complete just 17 passes during the game, which was fewer than the 24 passes McGregor would complete, which emphasises that he wasn’t able to get on the ball very often.

Unfortunately for Gerrard, on the few occasions when Patterson did have the ball at his feet, he was wasteful with it, as he lost possession 16 times, which again was more than both of Rangers’ centre-backs despite them having much more of the ball.

After the game, Gerrard suggested that the academy talent “became a man” with his performance on Thursday but the stats suggest that the youngster still has a lot to learn before he can be considered a serious challenger for Tavernier at right-back in this Rangers side.

And, in other news… No time for niceties: Wilson must axe £7.5k Rangers flop this summer; he’s simply not good enough
