Palmer: £20m is cheap for Leeds target Maxwel Cornet - Exclusive

£20m for Lyon left-back Maxwel Cornet is cheap, former Leeds United midfielder Carlton Palmer has told Football FanCast in an exclusive interview.

Leeds are in the market for a left-back and have been linked with a move for the 24-year-old.

According to The Sun, the Yorkshire club are keen on Cornet as Marcelo Bielsa looks to strengthen the left side of his defence. However, the same outlet claims there is a reluctance to pay Lyon’s £20m asking price.

For Palmer, though, that is definitely not too much to ask for in this day and age. On Leeds’ reported interest in Cornet, the ex-England international said:

“I think to be honest with you, if you look at the Premier League now, 20 million is cheap, isn’t it? If you look at players moving in the Premier League now, 20 million is considered to be cheap.

“20 million now for a Premier League player would be considered, you know, the norm – quite cheap, really.”

All things considered, £20m for Cornet does not sound like the worst deal. At 24, Cornet already has a lot of experience playing at a high level.

He has been a regular for Lyon in Ligue 1 for years now, has played in the Champions League and is an Ivory Coast international.

Also, as shown on WhoScored, the former Metz man can play in practically every position on the left. Taking all of that into account, his asking price looks more than reasonable.

West Ham fans flock to Alphonse Areola news

Flocking to Twitter, many West Ham United fans have erupted over a transfer claim involving Paris-Saint Germain goalkeeper Alphonse Areola.

The Irons have been tipped to target new goalkeepers this summer as current number one Lukasz Fabianski nears the end of his career.

The Poland veteran recently put pen to paper on a one-year contract extension at the London Stadium, but at 36, West Ham may need to think about his potential successor, or at the very least provide sufficient backup for him.

As the club attempts to address these concerns, Foot Mercato have now come out with some welcome news for Hammers supporters.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-3/” title=”West Ham latest!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The French news outlet claimed that GSB are in the process of finalising a deal to sign Areola on a season-long loan with an option to buy at the end of the season. Indeed, West Ham are apparently ‘trying to close’ the operation, and a move could be completed within the next few days.

Amid this transfer claim, it is understandable that many Irons fans are excited given that David Moyes has not made a senior summer addition yet.

Check out a flavour of the fans’ best reactions below as West Ham Central, West Ham News & Views, West Ham Fan Zone and Zach Lowy shared this news on Twitter.

Pakistan take unassailable 2-0 lead over New Zealand

Pakistan proved the tag of bad chasers of wrong for the second time inless than seven months when they overhauled New Zealand’s 277 withthree wickets and 17 balls to spare to clinch the One-dayInternational series at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium

Samiul Hasan25-Apr-2002Pakistan proved the tag of bad chasers of wrong for the second time inless than seven months when they overhauled New Zealand’s 277 withthree wickets and 17 balls to spare to clinch the One-dayInternational series at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium Wednesday night. The victory in the second One-day International gave the Asianchampions an unassailable 2-0 lead over the ICC Champions Trophywinners with the last match scheduled at Lahore Saturday.Pakistan, who successfully chased 272 against Sri Lanka at Sharjahlast October, looked dead and buried when they lost Imran Nazir andYousuf Youhana in the first eight balls. But then two usefulpartnerships of 73 for the third wicket and 93 for the fourth turnedthe match in Pakistan’s favour. And though there were minor hiccups atthe end, Rashid Latif ensured that Pakistan didn’t let the initiativeslip with a priceless unbeaten 28.The architects of Pakistan’s victory were, however, Younis Khan, whostroked a flawless 70 off 91 balls, and Abdul Razzaq who clobbered 10fours and a six in his superb 84-ball 86.The flamboyant Shahid Afridi gave the initial impetus to the inningswith a rapid 36-ball 40 before perishing to a premeditated sweep offScott Styris. Both Younis and Razzaq justified the decision of skipper Waqar Younisto promote them ahead of the experienced Inzamam-ul-Haq. But thedecision also left a few questions unanswered. If Inzamam was demotedbecause of bad form, why he was retained as Pakistan, for the seventhstraight match, kept faith in the same side that started its SharjahCup defence earlier this month. And if he was selected in spite of badform, why he was not sent at No 3 which would have provided him ampletime to settle down and come out of a poor patch.Inzamam scored 26 but he faces the axe for the third match, particularly after Pakistan is expected to make changes.Younis, who hit his fourth half century in five matches, played a wellcontrolled innings. The 25-year-old Pathan showed good defensivetechnique to good balls but at the same time punished anything losethat fetched him seven boundaries. The high point of Younis’s inningswas his excellent timing and perfect placing.Nevertheless, despite doing all the hard work, Younis threw his wicketby attempting to cut Walker only to get his stumps rattled.Despite losing Younis, Razzaq kept his composure and continued toplunder runs all over the park through his unorthodox style. He showednice wrist work by playing delicate leg glances and off his toesstrokes. When Pakistan needed 26 off 45 balls for victory, Styris foxed Razzaqwith a slow off-spinner. But the Middlesex-bound all-rounder had donehis job to perfection though it would have been nice if he hadreturned undefeated.New Zealand had their chances to dismiss Younis and Razzaq. But one ofthe finest fielding sides failed to pounce on the opportunities. LouVincent and Walker needed direct throws to run out both but failed tohit the stumps.Overall, it was a collective and team effort by the Pakistan batsmenwho have repeatedly buckled down while chasing big totals. There wascommitment, discipline and purpose behind their batting thatthoroughly entertained a full house of 18,000 spectators.Earlier, Craig McMillan scored his second One-day Internationalcentury to propel the Black Caps to an imposing 277 for five.McMillan, whose other century was also against Pakistan last year atChristchurch, was out in the last over after hitting a 116-ball 105.But it was sad that he ended up on the losing side, chiefly becauseNew Zealand didn’t have the fire and penetration in their bowling.McMillan slapped eight boundaries and a six and featured in twofruitful partnerships. For the second wicket with Matthew Horne, headded 96 runs from 125 balls and then for the third wicket, he put 92runs off 83 balls with Adams.Horne chipped in with a fluent 62 – his fifth half century in 49matches – that included seven boundaries from 91 balls. Adams, promoted to use long handle after the platform was set, contributedrun-a-ball 45 with six hits to the fence. It was McMillan who maintained New Zealand’s steady run-rate. Afterthe visitors collected 141 for two from the first 30 overs, McMillanmade sure that his side added almost an equal number of runs in theremaining twenty overs. With New Zealand reaching 210 for two from 40 overs, prospects of ascore of more than 300 looked on cards. But the Pakistan bowlers, whofailed to make a good use of the new ball by allowing McMillan andcompany build partnerships, pulled things back in the death overs bybowling in the block holes. The end result was that New Zealand couldmuster only 67 runs. The pace trio of Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis and Shoaib Akhtar bowledtheir hearts out on a strip full of runs. Shoaib, who wanted toperform well before his home crowd, finished with wicketless for 51while Wasim recovered after giving away 22 off his first four overs toend up with two for 58. Waqar was the pick of the bowlers with two for46.

Pundit says 3-4-3 would suit Tottenham’s Sergio Reguilon

Paul Stewart believes playing three at the back next season would suit Sergio Reguilon down to the ground.

Tottenham-linked manager Paulo Fonseca often deploys a 3-4-3 formation, and should the Spaniard be his preferred left-sided option, could benefit from being able to push forward in a wing-back role.

It’s a position that the former Real Madrid defender occupied on seven occasions under Jose Mourinho last season, starting with his Spurs debut when he claimed an assist in the Carabao Cup victory over Chelsea in September.

That was part of an impressive start to his Tottenham career, but an injury and loss of form meant for a tricky second half of the campaign, with his freak own goal in the penultimate game against Aston Villa leading to a sour end to his season.

But deploying a three-man defence could allow Reguilon to get into those dangerous attacking areas and add to the six assists he provided in his 36 appearances in his debut season.

And Stewart exclusively told The Transfer Tavern that Reguilon could benefit from playing higher up the pitch:

“I believe, if you’re playing a three, Reguilon will suit that position down to the ground, therefore that leaves Sessegnon playing left-sided of the three midfielders.”

Derby County dealt Martyn Waghorn blow

Derby County have been dealt a blow in their bid to keep Martyn Waghorn at Pride Park this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by The Athletic, who claim that, despite Wayne Rooney’s side offering the 31-year-old a new contract, there has been little to no progress made in talks with the centre-forward.

The report goes on to reveal that the situation with Andre Wisdom and Curtis Davies is the same, and with the players’ current deals set to expire in just a matter of weeks, should the Rams fail to make a breakthrough in their respective talks, the club look likely to lose the services of the trio this summer.

Fans should be concerned

With Derby fans having watched their club endure a rather disastrous Championship campaign on the pitch last season, in addition to seeing two separate takeover attempts fall through and their club being placed under a transfer embargo, the news that the Rams could be set to lose the player who almost single-handedly saved the club from relegation last term is sure to come as further concerning news for the Pride Park faithful.

Indeed, on the final day of the Championship season, Wayne Rooney’s side lined up against Sheffield Wednesday knowing that a win for their opponents would see their side relegated to the third tier of English football.

And, despite having had a relatively poor season, Waghorn stepped up to the mantle when it mattered most for Derby, scoring two goals and providing one assist in the 3-3 draw against the Owls, with the £7.9k-per-week striker’s efforts seeing him earn a SofaScore match rating of 8.1 in the fixture – the highest rating received by a player from either side on the day.

As such, with Rooney undoubtedly hoping to build a side that is capable of much more than scraping survival in their upcoming Championship campaign, retaining the man whom Mark Warburton previously dubbed a “tremendous” player would very much seem to go a long way in helping the Rams achieve this feat.

However, with no progress seemingly made in the 31-year-old’s contract talks as yet, time is quickly running out for Derby to get a deal over the line and that should be a huge concern for the club’s loyal supporters.

AVFC: Fans fume at Ezri Konsa’s England exclusion

Plenty of Aston Villa fans were left disappointed after defender Ezri Konsa was left out of Gareth Southgate’s provisional England squad for this summer’s European Championships.

Southgate named Tyrone Mings, Jack Grealish and Ollie Watkins in his 33-man squad, with no room for Konsa or Matt Targett.

That squad will have to be trimmed down to 26 players over the coming days, but plenty of Villa supporters were baffled at Konsa not making the initial 33.

He missed just two Premier League games all season and was key in a Villa defence that kept 15 clean sheets during the 2020/21 campaign.

Konsa, who can also represent Portugal, has turned out for the Three Lions at Under-21 level, but a maiden senior call up will, unfortunately, have to wait.

Villa fans react

Villa shared the news on Mings, Grealish and Watkins on their official Twitter page on Tuesday afternoon.

However, these supporters wanted to talk about Konsa’s exclusion, with one describing the decision to overlook him as ‘terrible’.

Everton fans on Aarons transfer update

Many Everton fans have been left to bemoan a transfer update from Fabrizio Romano on Max Aarons.

Replying to a Toffees supporter when asked if the Norwich City ace was going to Goodison Park, the Italian football journalist and transfer guru claimed: ‘No chance’.

Just last month, Romano had stated that the Merseyside club were ‘leading the race’ to sign Aarons, and that advanced talks were ‘progressing’.

It has left several Blues wondering what has happened between then and now, as it looks as if they will have to start pursuing other targets in the right-back area.

Playing in all but one game for the Canaries in the EFL Championship in the 2020/21 term (Transfermarkt), Aarons was certainly a key player in getting them promoted back up to the Premier League, and at just 21 years of age, the Englishman would have been an ideal long-term successor to 32-year-old Seamus Coleman.

Villa interested in Giorgian De Arrascaeta

Aston Villa could land a dream upgrade on Anwar El Ghazi in Flamengo star Giorgian De Arrascaeta.

What’s the story?

With the Premier League season now over, Dean Smith’s side can now concentrate on the upcoming summer transfer window and how best to strengthen the squad ahead of the 2021/22 campaign.

According to Uruguayan outlet Traspasos (via Sport Witness), Villa have made an enquiry about signing De Arrascaeta this summer, although it was revealed that so far there has only been initial contact and nothing more.

Better than El Ghazi

With 74 goals in his career thus far, De Arrascaeta has offered a consistent goal threat despite playing as a left-sided winger, although he can also play off the striker.

The 26-year-old has been in fine form for Flamengo since joining the club, with a user on Twitter putting a spotlight on the enormous success he has enjoyed out in Brazil by revealing: “Giorgian De Arrascaeta has won the Campeonato Carioca for the third season in a row, as Flamengo beat Fluminense in the state championship final last night. The Uruguay international has now won 9 trophies in 29 months at the club. That’s basically a trophy every 97 days.”

Writing for World Football Index, Tom Robinson described the 26-year-old as someone “blessed with excellent technique and vision”, and at Flamengo he has “quickly became a fan favourite with his mix of skill, invention and goal threat from midfield”.

In the Copa Libertadores, the South American version of the Champions League, the Uruguayan has been in scintillating form, scoring two goals and providing four assists, one of which came last Thursday.

If you compare his performances in that competition compared to what El Ghazi has produced in the Premier League, then it really is night and day.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/villa-dean-smith-transfer-gossip-rumours-news-premier-league-buendia-berge-mcneil-trezeguet-villa-park” title=”Read the latest Villa transfer rumours and news!”]

As per Sofascore, the Uruguayan doubles the amount of key passes, has far more touches of the ball, makes more crosses, and is also more of a defensive presence too, winning more interceptions, tackles and duels per game in comparison to the Aston Villa man.

De Arrascaeta is proving that he is a player for the big occasion by shining in the Copa Libertadores, and his goal threat, creativity and hard work off the ball makes him a perfect upgrade on El Ghazi.

Meanwhile, this Villa academy star was outstanding against Liverpool in the FA Youth Cup…
