No decision yet on Pakistan's base

The final decision over the whether to move the Pakistan women’s team base for the forthcoming Women’s World Cup out of Mumbai, fearing protests by political outfits, hangs in the balance. At the end of the BCCI Working Committee meeting in Mumbai on Tuesday, BCCI president N Srinivasan did not reveal anything concrete except saying that the board had passed the relevant information to the ICC. “We have informed the ICC about it. They will have to examine it and take a view,” he said. The PCB has written to the ICC, asking it to take responsibility of the security of the Pakistan squad. “We have written to the ICC asking it to ensure the Pakistan team get a foolproof security after the hockey incidents,” PCB spokesperson Nadeem Sarwar told ESPNcricinfo. The PCB has also requested if the organsiers could shift the venue for the Pakistan matches.”The World Cup will be played at four venues across Mumbai, from January 31 to February 17. Wankhede Stadium, Brabourne Stadium, MIG Ground and the Bandra-Kurla Complex ground are the four venues. Pakistan, who are in Group B, are scheduled to play their league matches against Australia (January 31), New Zealand (February 3) and South Africa (February 5).However, it is understood that the tournament organisers have been thinking of an alternate venue as a safeguard, though no final venue has been decided. “We have not written anything to the ICC asking or informing them about any change of venue. We have just made them aware of what the ground situation is here in Mumbai in a few e-mail exchanges,” a board official told ESPNcricinfo. According to him, a final word on the change of venue should be decided in the next two days.On Sunday, the Shiv Sena activists held protests outside the Bombay Hockey Association Stadium, (which incidentally is adjacent to the Wankhede Stadium) opposing the presence of four Pakistan hockey players in the Mumbai Magicians’ squad in the recently launched Hockey India League. Though the team moved immediately to New Delhi, some Sena activists reached the practice venue in the Indian capital to cause further disruptions. The Sena went public about its intentions, saying it would not allow any Pakistan artistes to perform in Mumbai. “I don’t want to reveal our plans, but you already know of our policy. The Sena will not allow any artiste or sportsperson from Pakistan to perform or play in the city. That country is waging a proxy war against us. There’s no way we will allow them in Mumbai,” senior party leader Subhash Desai told on Monday. The BCCI, understandably, feels the protests could escalate to a higher level considering it is hosting a world event. “This being a World Cup, it will attract a little more attention from political outfits like Shiv Sena. With regards the hockey issue only few hockey players were involved but we are talking now about an entire Pakistan women’s squad,” the official said.Asked if the ICC had raised any concerns, the official said the final decision would have to be taken by India, the host country. “Any decision will be taken here rather than the ICC. It will be a BCCI decision if there is a shift of venue. The only decision when the ICC will get involved in would be in the extreme scenario of Pakistan pulling out of the tournament. But that happening is quite remote,” the official said. The ICC has been monitoring the situation but is happy to wait for the BCCI to deliver the final decision. “Safety and security of the players and ICC officials is always our priority and we constantly monitor and review every situation,” an ICC spokesperson said.

'I don't think I have plenty of cricket left in me'

Sachin Tendulkar has said that he will reassess his cricketing future in November amid growing calls for him to consider retirement

ESPNcricinfo staff05-Oct-2012Sachin Tendulkar has said that he will reassess his cricketing future in November, when he plays the home Tests against England. Tendulkar, who has previously been non-committal on questions about his retirement, also said any decision about ending a 23-year career will depend on both his form and his motivation levels.”I need not take a call right now. When I play in November, I will re-assess things,” Tendulkar was quoted as saying in .”I am 39 and I don’t think I have plenty of cricket left in me. But it depends on my frame of mind and my physical ability to deliver. When I feel that I am not delivering what is needed, and then I will re-look at the scheme of things. I am already 39 and no one expects me to go on playing forever.”In his latest series, the home Tests against New Zealand, he was bowled in each of his three innings for low scores. Sunil Gavaskar was among those concerned by Tendulkar’s poor form. “The gap between the pad and the bat is a worrying sign,” Gavaskar had said. “This is never a good sign for a great batsman.”Tendulkar, however, felt that it was natural for the questions to be asked. “There are two different things – scoring runs and what I feel. For instance, if this three-wicket ordeal had happened when I was 25, no one would have questioned it. Incidentally, it happened when I am 39, so questions were raised. This is natural.”Tendulkar has played 190 Tests and he said he is not chasing any particular mark. India play England in a four-Test series starting November followed by another four-Test series against Australia early next year.”I am looking at it series by series. As long as I feel that I can deliver, I will continue playing. It also depends on what the team feels and whether I am motivated enough to continue being on top of the game.”

Deonarine on probationary return – Gibson

Narsingh Deonarine’s recall to the West Indies Test team to face Australia is a temporary solution to the absence of Marlon Samuels and has arrived despite continued reservations about his fitness, the coach Ottis Gibson has candidly admitted.Deonarine acquitted himself well as a batsman in Australia in 2009-10, but after Gibson’s 2010 appointment the left-hander was not offered a WICB contract due to poor fitness results. He has undergone a fresh round of testing ahead of the first Test of this series at the Kensington Oval in Barbados, and Gibson stated that Deonarine had to show visible improvement over the next three weeks.”Partly but not entirely. I can only be honest,” Gibson said when asked whether Deonarine had reached the fitness benchmark set for him. “He’s someone that we need right now, we’re not able to have Marlon [Samuels] in the team at the moment because Marlon’s gone to the IPL as well and he’s a like for like replacement for Marlon, he bowls a little bit of off spin and he bats at six, he’s been the leading batsman in the regional tournament just now, and that’s the role that he will play.”With regard to his fitness, it’s just an ongoing process for him, one that he has to keep on top of because I’m sure he has seen how the fitness of the team itself has improved significantly in the last 12 months. He will know that eventually if he doesn’t make the necessary adjustments to his fitness that the team will move on, as all great teams do, without him.”I’m sure he will meet those requirements because he’s desperate to play cricket. I had a chat with him yesterday and he desperately wants to be here and do his thing and he had some fitness assessments yesterday, we will know the results of them later on and stuff, so hopefully if the message didn’t get through in the first instance, hopefully it will get through the second time around.”Australian observers were surprised when Deonarine was discarded due to doubts about his ability to bat for long periods, after a couple of limpet-like displays against Australia in Perth during a series where the 2-0 margin arguably flattered the hosts. Gibson pointed out that Deonarine’s strong results in this season’s Caribbean regional competition were compelling enough to earn a recall, but had been achieved without the hundreds he expects of his batsmen.”His quality as a batsman has never been the concern,” Gibson said. “It’s whether he’s able to bat a day and a half, whether he’s able to bat the four hours that is required at international level to make a Test hundred. His results will show he’s made a lot of runs this year but he hasn’t made a first-class hundred.”At the same time he’s been putting runs on the board and in a series where not a lot of batsmen put runs on the board it is hard to ignore his runs. I add to that the fact we can’t have Marlon at the moment, so he fills the role that Marlon was playing.”Another batsman facing high expectations against Australia will be the gifted Darren Bravo, who has shown the potential to be the best West Indian batsman of his generation but had a halting introduction to Australian opposition in the ODI matches, losing his place. Gibson said Bravo needed to clear his head and believe in his methods, ignoring the visitors’ efforts to corral him.”He just needs to be himself,” Gibson said. “I think sometimes one-day cricket lends itself to you having to go out in circumstances and play shots and maybe up the scoring rate or whatever’s the case or consolidate when you’ve just lost a couple of wickets and stuff like that. Test cricket’s very different, he goes out every day and starts over, [he should] just be himself and bat the way he batted, especially in India.”He made a brilliant hundred in Bangladesh, but in India he was outstanding, and the Indians, from some of the fields that they set for him, it was clear they had obvious plans for him as well and he scored two Test hundreds. So he is somebody that we have a lot of confidence and belief in and somebody that will take us forward over the next couple of years.”We’re not worried about his form, we know what he’s capable of and he tends to rise to the big occasion as well, so we’re looking forward to seeing him bat over the next couple of weeks.”

Nkunku: Liverpool’s answer to Haaland?

Liverpool have had a quite marvellous season and even if the quadruple looks to be slightly swimming away from them, a Champions League final win in Paris in just over a week’s time should be enough to forget about the Premier League.

Jurgen Klopp’s Anfield empire has become even greater this term and after signing a new contract a few weeks ago, it’s set to become a complete behemoth.

This Liverpool team is now one of the best to walk the earth, it is one of the finest we’ve seen in Premier League history and if they seal another European crown in a few weeks’ time, we may even have to consider them as one of the very best ever.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-liverpool-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-salah-gnabry-isak-romano” title= “Read the latest Liverpool news!”]

The question must be asked, therefore, how can this team get any better? Well, if they lose the likes of Mo Salah or Sadio Mane, whose futures are uncertain in Merseyside, they will need to sign new players to ensure their consistency remains imperious.

Luis Diaz’s arrival has been sublime, with the Colombian registering 11 goal involvements since signing in January, but there could be another hole left to fill in the summer.

It will need quickly filling too with Manchester City already 1-0 up in terms of this summer’s transfer activity after signing Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund.

However, Klopp can unearth the perfect tonic to that move by signing his own elite name; Christopher Nkunku.

Like Haaland, the Frenchman has played for a Red Bull affiliated club and he’s also torn the Bundesliga to shreds.

The RB Leipzig talent is a reported target for Liverpool and if they can get a deal across the line, it would be a phenomenal signing.

Dubbed a “nightmare” by ESPN and “unstoppable” by GOAL, there are few better offensive players in Europe right now with the 24-year-old capable of playing up front, on the wings or in attacking midfield.

Boasting 34 goals and 20 assists, he has even more goal involvements in 2021/22 than a certain Egyptian attacker in Merseyside.

He is also compared to some of Europe’s top names with FB Ref declaring him a similar player to Diaz, Mane, Salah and Tottenham’s Heung-min Son.

Nkunku has clearly taken his game to the next level this term and if he arrives in England this summer, Liverpool will have another player capable of rivalling Haaland and Man City for the title.

The race for the Premier League crown next season is going to be incredibly tasty.

Lou Vincent powers Auckland to final

Auckland have qualified for the HRV Cup final after they comfortably beat Northern Districts by eight wickets at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui

ESPNcricinfo staff27-Dec-2010Auckland have qualified for the HRV Cup final after they comfortably beat Northern Districts by eight wickets at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui. Auckland’s win was set up by an all-round bowling performance which helped them restrict ND to a below-par 135 for 8 in their allotted overs.ND won the toss and elected to bat but got off to a terrible start when they lost Brad Wilson in the first over. Daniel Flynn blasted three sixes and a four off Michael Bates but once he was dismissed in the eighth over with the score on 47, ND lost momentum. The middle-order struggled to score freely as Auckland’s bowlers kept pegging away, backed up by some sharp fielding. Daryl Tuffey and Andre Adams were the most successful bowlers for Auckland; both picked up a couple of wickets, while conceding less than six runs an over.A target of 136 was never going to be enough to test the Auckland batsman. Though they lost Colin de Grandhomme in the second over, Lou Vincent and Jimmy Adams added 110 runs for the second wicket to set the platform for Auckland’s victory. Vincent top scored with 77 as Auckland won with nine deliveries remaining. This win takes them to the top of the points table and they will now host the final where they will face either Central Districts or ND.Wellington’s hopes of qualifying for the finals were dashed after they lost to Central Districts at the Basin Reserve in Wellington.CD lost Peter Ingram early after they were sent in to bat but a second-wicket partnership of 109 between How and George Worker set the stage for a big total. How blasted six sixes and nine fours in his 96 off just 42 balls, before he was dismissed by Jeetan Patel. Three more wickets for Patel, and a couple of run-outs kept CD’s middle order in check, but How’s impetus at the start was enough to carry them to 192 for 8 in 20 overs.Wellington started the chase in positive fashion, racing to 38 in four overs before Luke Wright was dismissed. Ian Blackwell then pegged the Wellington middle order back with three key strikes as the Wellington batsmen failed to build on their starts. They could only reach 163 for 6 in 20 overs to hand CD an easy 29-run win. CD are at second place in the points table, two points ahead of ND with one round of matches remaining. The game between last placed Otago and fourth placed Canterbury at Molyneux Park in Alexandra was abandoned without a ball being bowled due to rain.
