‘Can play hard cricket without playing nasty cricket’

With a 199-run second Test victory over England at Headingley, the current New Zealand side added evidence to a case which suggests this is the country’s best Test era under the captaincy of Brendon McCullum and stewardship of Mike Hesson.Their attacking tactics with bat, ball and field have been dubbed revolutionary and make for compelling viewing in the eyes of many beholders. However, a couple of facts suggest the perception extends beyond the anecdotal and into reality.1. A run of seven undefeated series, starting with the Bangladesh series in October 2013 and extending to this drawn England series, is the most by any New Zealand side. They have also beaten the West Indies home and away, beaten India and Sri Lanka at home, and drawn with Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates. The previous best era began with the 2-1 away victory over Australia in November 1985 and finished with a draw on the bomb-curtailed Sri Lanka tour of April 1987. Between those bookends they beat Australia and the West Indies at home and England away. When you consider that era included two undisputed greats of the New Zealand game in Richard Hadlee and Martin Crowe, it puts the feat into perspective.Tuesday’s victory was New Zealand’s first away win against England in 16 years, second at Headingley, and ninth overall in 101 Tests between the countries but, perhaps most importantly, it was their first win in a Test starting during May. In seven previous examples – 1965, 2004, 2008 (twice), 2013 (twice), 2015 – they had lost six and drawn one.2. The Headingley victory provided another tribute to McCullum’s leadership. He insisted they could play the same way as they did at Lord’s, despite seeing the test slip from their grasp on the fourth day. With the win he edges ahead of Geoff Howarth as the most successful New Zealand captain on the basis of percentage wins. Howarth had 11 from 30 matches (36.67 per cent); McCullum has nine from 24 matches (37.50 per cent). As a further benchmark, Stephen Fleming earned 28 from 80 matches (35 per cent).Home and away series against Australia this summer will provide the best gauge yet as to their place in history.Hesson, who along with McCullum was awarded the New Zealand Order of Merit in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List during the second Test, said their aggressive mindset was justified at Headingley.”It is challenging if it doesn’t work out because you can get exposed, but if you truly believe the way you play gives you the best chances of success then, regardless of the situation, you need to stick to your guns.”We were under pressure a lot and took steps forward from 2 for 2 and 23 for 2 in each innings respectively. We could have gone into our shell but stuck with the way we wanted to play. Within a short space of time we got back the initiative.”If you look at the players in the group, most instinctively play with flair. There’s also balance with the likes of Kane Williamson, BJ Watling and Tom Latham.”Seven undefeated test series in a row is something we’re proud of, especially challenging good sides in their home conditions.”New Zealand now prepare for five one-day internationals and one Twenty20 against England.World Cup incumbents Grant Elliott, Nathan McCullum and Mitchell McClenaghan rejoin the squad, while left-arm pace bowler Ben Wheeler and left-arm orthodox allrounder Mitchell Santner are expected to make their limited-overs debuts.

Southee and Boult demolish Lions

Tim Southee and Trent Boult shared five wickets between them to force Lahore Lions to 19 for 5 while chasing 171. The rest was simply a blur of pink as Northern Knights hurtled to a crushing 72-run victory.

The Report by Alagappan Muthu14-Sep-2014
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsLahore Lions’ top order was clueless against the new ball•BCCI

The match had begun in overcast conditions. Lahore Lions’ bowlers were not able to enlist their help and conceded 170 and their batsmen became helpless witnesses to what could have happened. Tim Southee and Trent Boult had the ball zipping around to have Lions 19 for 5. The rest was simply a blur of pink as Northern Knights hurtled to a crushing 72-run victory.Daniel Flynn, their captain, knew he had a new-ball attack that could dissect Test sides and his half-century coupled with BJ Watling’s provided what ended up being a giant run-rate boost that primes them to make the main draw.Their only roadblock on the day was Saad Nasim, who willed Lions towards some sense of dignity with a fifty of his own. He was the only Lahore batsman to reach double-figures, while his team was all out for 98, the tenth-lowest total in CLT20.The slide began with a menacing yorker from Southee, one that swung in late, sneaked under Nasir Jamshed’s plod and toppled his stumps. Boult ensured he wasn’t left behind by setting up the other opener Ahmed Shehzad. Doubts were sowed when an inswinger had the batsman playing around his pads. The next ball was angled across, Shehzad’s muddled footwork and feeble prod was safely pouched by the keeper. A contest was brewing, although it was limited to the two quicks.Southee surged ahead by bouncing Mohammad Hafeez and had a little luck in undoing Umar Siddiq’s promotion. Boult hit back with a rousing inswinger that rattled Akmal’s stumps to bring the seamers’ skirmish even. By this time Lions – who were five down – were so far behind the game that Southee and Boult’s game of one-upmanship was the only thing that caught the crowd’s attention. The winner was declared in rather emphatic fashion, if again with a little bit of luck. Asif Raza slogged to deep midwicket, where Southee pulled off a spectacular relay catch to inflict further hurt on an already listless Lions display. A vast majority of their batsmen did not seem aware of the importance of run-rates and their teams’ is languishing at -1.49. Except from Nasim, there was no attempt to weather the Knights’ swing bowlers and lessen the margin of defeat.Lions’ intent was even worse on the field. Flynn was dropped on 26 and Watling got a life on 46 – and both of them were the reason Knights clattered 52 runs in the final five overs. The bowling looked a far cry from what Mumbai Indians had to face on Saturday night. Hafeez had been asked at the toss if the short turnaround from their match with Mumbai Indians might have an adverse effect. He had dead batted it, but judging by the events that transpired, there might have been a knock-on effect.Akmal messed up a stumping in the second over and shelled a regulation catch in the 17th. Nasir Jamshed lost control of a catch, could not rein it in on the rebound and failed to realise a run-out opportunity all off the same ball. Adnan Rasool misjudged a chance at deep square leg and the ball lobbed over his head for a four. And during the slog overs, deep midwicket and long-on stood rooted to their spots while Scott Styris, a new batsman, stole three runs.Meanwhile Knights, who had shelled five catches in six overs yesterday, erased that memory quite ruthlessly. Daniel Harris hunted a big hit from Nasim from long-on, flung himself to the right and almost conjured a catch out of nowhere. And the contrasts continued still. While Flynn employed desperate dives multiple times to safeguard his wicket, Rasool was caught napping by a direct hit from Flynn himself and Nasim too wandered thoughtlessly out of his crease to be run-out by the bowler to give the Lions chase a fitting end.

Klinger key to continued improvement

Last year

6th, CC Div 2; 6th Midlands/West Div, FLt20; 4th Group C, YB40.

2013 in a nutshell

The ground development at Nevil Road has dominated everything about the club for the past few seasons. The playing budget has been severely squeezed, a number of senior players left and Gloucestershire slumped to the foot of the County Championship in 2012. But with planning permission secured, there was more breathing space last season and the signing of Australian Michael Klinger was a glorious acquisition.Klinger was more than anyone could have hoped for. He took over the captaincy from Alex Gidman, refreshed a young dressing room and led from the front with over 2,000 runs across all competitions. He was so good Gloucestershire tried to sign him as a domestic player on a Hungarian passport. He led an improvement in the County Championship, where Gloucestershire won only one fewer match than promoted Northamptonshire, had four batsman score over 1,000 runs – including young left-hander Chris Dent – and again had Will Gidman leading their attack superbly. Perhaps more pleasingly Craig Miles returned a physically different specimen two years on from his remarkable debut as a 16-year-old to take 43 wickets.Gloucestershire were also well in the hunt for a Yorkshire Bank 40 semi-final and actually beat Glamorgan, who qualified, twice. But there was little excitement in the Friends Life t20 where only three victories left them bottom of their group and a points deduction for a poor pitch at Cheltenham of all places means they start with a handicap in 2014.

2014 prospects

There is definitely a case to be made that things are coming together at Gloucestershire. Nevil Road has been transformed and new chief executive Will Brown has arrived to lead them forward. Securing more international matches is essential following their investment so a close eye should be kept on the next round of bidding for England games from 2017.On the field, the squad is settling down and young players who previously might have been selected out of necessity now have useful experience. Benny Howell has emerged as a very effective allrounder and the wicketkeeping conundrum that has rumbled on since 2011 appears to have been solved by Gareth Roderick. The upturn in form of several batsman was a major plus last season, they got full value out of Hamish Marshall and Alex Gidman for the first time in several seasons, and Gloucestershire can now put out a solid batting order. But they need to find depth in the bowling attack. Liam Norwell and James Fuller could both mature into fine fast bowlers, both suffered with injury last year, and left-armer David Payne has potential. Tom Smith could provide a long-sought after reliable spin option. If they can bring together a more potent attack and the batting again produces, Gloucestershire could be the unexpected side to have a dart at promotion. In one-day cricket they have no players with a fear factor but given their solid showing last season and the addition of a quarter-final phase in this season’s Royal London Cup, it would not be a surprise to find Gloucestershire in the knock-out stages. But it would be a Northamptonshire-esque turnaround if they even made it out of the group stage in the NatWest T20 Blast.

Key player

Klinger earned himself Gloucestershire’s player of the year award for 2013 and his adopted county have clearly made progress under his leadership. His runs were especially important in one-day cricket, where the rest of the batsman collectively only made one more score above fifty than he managed in the whole competition. Essential to the club’s limited-overs fortunates, Klinger could also lead a dark-horse challenge for Championship promotion.

Bright young thing

Dent and Miles are both home-grown youngsters whom Gloucestershire will hope can mature into consistent performers but wicketkeeper Roderick, born in Durban, could be the most exciting prospect in Bristol. He seized the No. 1 role with the gloves last year and showed plenty of ability with the bat in consecutive match-saving centuries. Gumption and technique demonstrated, he was given a chance up the order at the end of the season.

Captain/coach

Klinger returns to lead the side and, with his contract up at the end of the year, Gloucestershire will give serious thought on trying to extend his stay in the West Country, although a bowling overseas option could be a future route. John Bracewell is still pulling the strings behind the scene but he has lost a second highly-rated member of his backroom team with Richard Dawson becoming Yorkshire assistant coach, following bowling coach Stuart Barnes switch to Surrey the previous winter. Mark Thorburn, who played briefly at Hampshire, is the club’s new high performance analyst and bowling coach.

ESPNcricinfo verdict

Nothing extraordinary should be expected from Gloucestershire, particularly in one-day cricket, with their bowling attack the chief cause for concern. But in the Championship if their batting fires again they have potential to follow the lead of Worcestershire, Derbyshire and Northamptonshire in previous seasons for a tilt at promotion.

Dhoni relieved series still alive

India would have wanted to go back to Hamilton with the series alive, and MS Dhoni was relieved R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja’s hitting had ensured the contest wasn’t dead just as yet

Abhishek Purohit in Auckland25-Jan-2014First things first. India would have wanted to go back to Hamilton with the series alive. And MS Dhoni was relieved that R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja’s hitting had tied the Auckland ODI and ensured the contest wasn’t dead just as yet. But the spinners’ batting partnership came after more failures from the middle order, and after the bowlers had conceded a 300-plus total again. So India return to Hamilton with a chance to square the series, but with most of the old problems still intact.Dhoni, though, stressed that getting out of Auckland without 0-3 was crucial.”The big thing for us was to stay alive in this series,” Dhoni said. “This game could have gone either way at that point. It seemed we needed hard work and application to win from there and Jadeja and Ashwin batted really well to take us to where we are and keep us alive. Overall quite happy.”I think we would have loved to win the game here. But at the same time, most important thing is being alive in the series and that’s what this tie does to us. We should have lost the game from 140-odd down for five-six. Once the kind of partnership we got we should have won from there. But it didn’t go our way. In the end tie was a good one because good cricket was played and bad cricket was also played by both sides. That is the reason we are on even terms. We can’t win the series but we can hold it to a draw.”Yet again there were instances where we could have packed up the game in our favour. It’s important to avail those. So far we have not done that in this series. Hopefully we can do that in the coming two matches.”One thing India haven’t been able to do so far is build substantial partnerships in the middle overs. This, Dhoni said, was pulling the side down. In Auckland, India slipped from 64 for 0 to 79 for 4 in just over eight overs. “In the middle overs we haven’t got the partnerships that are really needed,” he said. “With the kind of changes in ODIs, if you have wickets you have an edge especially from 35th over onwards. We are losing quite a few wickets in the middle overs, which means you have to restart building the innings, which means you lose 25-30 runs.”We have got power hitters in our batting. We haven’t fired. We haven’t availed the last ten overs generally how we do and yet we are getting very close to opposition targets. Hopefully in [the rest of] this series we will have wickets in hand and be able to use those overs and get those extra runs.”Dhoni also singled himself out, saying that he should have batted till the finish, which he had not been able to do in all three games despite making decent contributions. “My responsibility as a batsman is to stay till the end and so far in this series I have not been able to do that,” he said. “Got out close to 40-43rd over. It puts pressure on batsmen after me. Will be good if I can stay till 48th-49th over.”Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma gave India a swift start, though, and Ashwin and Jadeja ensured an electric finish. Dhoni was pleased with these performances, and said it would only help the spinners grow as batsmen. “Overall I like the approach in this game,” he said. “There is a certain brand of cricket we are known to play. That was missing in the last few games. So it was very important to express and the openers did that. Lower in the order, Ashwin and Jadeja also played the same brand of cricket. Still need to convert those starts into big innings, though.”

T&T look to gatecrash IPL teams' party

Trinidad & Tobago, the only non-IPL team left in the competition, have a tough task at hand in the Champions League T20 semi-finals, as they come up against a star-laden Mumbai Indians line-up

The Preview by Rohan Sharma04-Oct-2013Match factsSaturday, October 5, 2013
Start time 2000 (1430 GMT)Trinidad & Tobago will hope Sunil Narine produces one of his special spells•BCCIBig PictureAfter making the inaugural Champions League T20 final against New South Wales in 2009, Trinidad & Tobago have not reached the tournament’s knockouts again. In this edition, the group stage got better and better for them. After a four-wicket loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad in their second match, they held on – helped by a late shower – in a must-win game against Titans, before shocking tournament favourites Chennai Super Kings in their final game. Their eight-wicket win against Super Kings was so comprehensive, they catapulted them into top place in Group B.T&T’s strength remains their bowling, specifically mystery spinner Sunil Narine who was the highest wicket-taker at the end of the group stage with eight scalps. While they’ve had the occasional sparkle from their batsmen – like Evin Lewis’ quickfire 70 against Titans – it is primarily Narine, with some help from seamers Ravi Rampaul and Rayad Emrit, who has brought the team so far. Still, T&T, the only non-IPL team left in the tournament, are the underdogs in their semi-final encounter, as they face a star-laden Mumbai Indians line-up.Mumbai’s progression to the semi-finals was far trickier. A humbling seven-wicket loss to Rajasthan Royals followed by a washout against Otago meant they faced an uphill task to go through. Upon securing a much-needed victory against Lions, they showed just what their power-packed batting is capable off, mowing down 150 in 13.2 overs (they needed to do so in 14.2) against Perth Scorchers to bump their net run rate over Otago and qualify. They are the reigning IPL champions and, as their captain Rohit Sharma said after the win against Scorchers, seem to be peaking at the right time. Should T&T complete another giant killing, though, there’ll be a footnote to the game: Mumbai’s last game in this tournament is likely to be Sachin Tendulkar’s last in limited-overs cricket. Also, Tendulkar is 26 runs short of 50,000 runs in all recognised cricket. In the spotlightWithout a doubt, the performance of Sunil Narine can prove to be the breaking point for either team. His eight wickets have been worth their weight in gold – add to that his economy rate of 4.31 and his ability to strike at key moments of the game, and you know you’ve got a match-winner on your hands. Also, he has a good record against Mumbai – in five innings against them, he has taken 9 wickets, with an economy of 5.16.Harbhajan Singh will be feeling the pressure, after claiming a solitary wicket for 72 runs in the competition so far. His Champions League record, overall, is average, with 13 wickets in 15 matches at an unflattering economy of 7.06. However, in his only other match against T&T, in the 2011 edition, he produced one of his best T20 spells with 3 for 22. He will hope to repeat – or better – come Saturday.Quotes”Ramdin’s men know my game well but I know theirs too, so it’s going to be interesting this Saturday.”

“Yes, we miss Dwayne Bravo, Kieron Pollard and Kevon Cooper, but we’re used to it now as it’s been happening to us for years. The other guys are stepping up to the plate and that’s good news for us.”
