Hales and Bairstow steady England after Shanaka strikes on debut

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsIf Dasun Shanaka was an English seamer, he might well be on the endangered species list. His unassuming line and length, delivered with a high action and at a pace in the mid-to-high 70mphs, is precisely the sort of fare that the ECB – with this season’s new toss and pitches edict for domestic cricket – is looking to phase out of the county game. Such skills don’t cut the mustard at Test level these days, apparently.Ironic, then, that Shanaka’s sensational maiden spell in Test cricket was the stand-out performance on a truncated opening day of the first Test at Headingley – a ground synonymous with medium-pace marvels down the years, most famously, Neil Mallender’s debut against Pakistan in 1992. Three wickets for one run in the space of eight deliveries – including England captains present and future, Alastair Cook and Joe Root – ripped open a contest at a venue where Sri Lanka boast an improbable 100 percent record, following their series-winning victory in 2014.It required a diligent half-century from Alex Hales (another player whose output today belied the pre-conceptions) coupled with some home-ground know-how from Jonny Bairstow, for England to regroup with a 88-run stand for the sixth wicket, after their ambitions had been dramatically dented by the loss of five wickets for 34 runs either side of the lunch break.By tea, when Yorkshire’s dank weather swept in across the Pennines to wipe out the final session, Hales was unbeaten on 71, his second Test half-century in nine innings and his highest yet, beating the 60 he made against South Africa at Cape Town in January. It had been an innings of intense application, studded with 12 fours, as he battled initially to adapt his hard-handed technique to the overcast conditions before growing in confidence as his innings progressed. At the other end was Bairstow, who arrived at the crease with England’s innings in crisis at 83 for 5, but responded with the sort of sparky counter-punching that Matt Prior, in his own pomp, had so often provided from No. 7. With his confidence glowing following scores of 246 and 198 in his two most recent innings for Yorkshire at Headingley, Bairstow’s 54 not out from 67 balls took the attack back to Sri Lanka, who nevertheless remained firmly in the contest at 171 for 5, thanks to Shanaka’s stunning arrival. After being put into bat on a morning when bowling first was a no-brainer for both captains, England’s openers were obliged to rein in the extravagant strokeplay that has coloured so much of their cricket in recent months, and that situation might as well have been tailor-made for Alastair Cook. He began the match needing another 36 runs to reach 10,000 Test runs, and after getting off the mark with a sixth-ball clip for four through midwicket, appeared well set for the long grind until Shanaka tore up the script.Alex Hales stayed firm while others around him fell•Getty Images

Shanaka, who was the last of the five bowlers used by Angelo Mathews, launched his Test career with a maiden before striking with the first ball of his second over. Cook had been leaving the ball with his usual sangfroid for most of his 52 deliveries, but having creamed one cover drive off Nuwan Pradeep, he was drawn into another from the slower, wobblier Shanaka. The full length outside off left him a touch, and Cook scuffed an edge through to Dinesh Chandimal, the keeper. He was gone for 16, and still needs another 20 runs to notch up a landmark that has been on his conscience since the start of the South Africa tour in December.Three balls later, however, such thoughts had been whisked out of England’s minds. Nick Compton, out of form for Middlesex so far this season with 100 runs at 20.00 in four matches to date, had been advised by his captain to “just relax and play” as he attempts to extend his stuttering Test career. However, his anxieties cannot have been aided by his team-mates’ struggles to impose themselves, and when his turn eventually came, it proved to be short and cruel.Compton’s third delivery was on a perfect off-stump line and length, and demanded a shot in response. Attempting the deadest of dead-bat pokes, he squeezed a low edge through to Lahiru Thirimanne at first slip and was gone for a duck as Shanaka became only the third bowler in Test history, and the first since Richard Johnson in 2003, to claim two wickets before conceding his first career run. And, as if that was not enough of an impact on debut, Shanaka then added England’s main man to his tally, as Joe Root – in such golden touch in all formats – was also drawn into a drive that scudded to Kusal Mendis at third slip.It was a dream start for Shanaka, who had been awarded his Test cap by Mahela Jayawardene before the start of play, and a timely boost for a beleaguered Sri Lanka squad too, who began the match knowing that Dhammika Prasad, their matchwinning seamer on this ground two years ago, will miss the whole Test series after flying home to resolve a shoulder injury. But the clatter of wickets at the other end served, perversely, to boost Hales’ confidence, as if validating his watchful outlook. He had opened his account with a well-timed clip through midwicket off Pradeep, then followed that up with a rather streakier edge through the vacant third slip off Shaminda Eranga. An emphatic punch through the covers dented Mathews’ figures after a tight start to his spell, then, having notched his first single of the morning from his 48th delivery, Hales added two more fours in the space of three balls off Mathews, each drilled through the covers off the front and back foot respectively. After the break, however, England’s problems deepened before they could improve. James Vince, on debut, had dug in to lunch, blocking out his first 15 balls, and then a further three after the break, before square-driving Pradeep into the covers to get off the mark in Test cricket. But, despite punching two well-timed fours in three balls off Eranga, Vince was suckered by the bowler’s full length and controlled outswing to become Mendis’ second catch at third slip.Into the fray strode Ben Stokes, never a man to die wondering in a crisis. After a watchful first-ball block, Stokes spanked fours from each of his next three balls, including a loose clip off the pads that flew agonisingly close to the man at short midwicket. That, however, was as good as his innings would get. Seeking to get onto the front foot, both literally and metaphorically, he clipped a tame catch to Mathews at mid-on to deepen England’s gloom.By tea, however, Hales and Bairstow had provided their team with a steadying hand, with Bairstow in particular striking the perfect balance between attack and defence. He survived one moment of genuine alarm, on 40, when he was adjudged lbw to Mathews only for the delivery to be shown on review to be sliding down leg. His response, three balls later, was to gallop down the track to Rangana Herath and deposit him back down the ground for six, and when he opened the face to glide his sixth four through third man off Mathews, he brought up a 60-ball fifty that England will hope is the harbinger of much, much more.

Predicted Arsenal XI, Team & Injury News Vs Man City

Arsenal return to Premier League action tonight, seeking to brush aside their poor form in order to topple Manchester City in their all-important clash.

Having drawn their last three matches, two of which came against relegation-threatened opposition, the title has been well and truly thrown back into Pep Guardiola's hands. In avoiding defeat tonight, the Cityzens would find themselves firmly in the driving seat with the Gunners having just five games left.

However, in order to both quell the threat the hosts pose whilst also maximising his weakened outfit, Mikel Arteta could throw up a tactical surprise.

His main focus will undoubtedly be silencing Erling Haaland, and cannot persist with his current system to do so. It would leave Rob Holding woefully exposed, who has already shown his deficiencies in recent weeks.

arsenal-southampton-manchester-city-arteta

However, the expected continued absences of both William Saliba and Granit Xhaka could prove costly for the visitors, who will have to adapt accordingly.

Whilst it will take plenty to do so, a win is almost a prerequisite if Arsenal are to continue their push for the title

How will Arsenal line up against Manchester City?

With that in mind, Arteta could make two changes from the side that drew 3-3 with Southampton on Friday as the side shifts to a three-at-the-back system.

Aaron Ramsdale will remain in goal but behind three central defenders instead of his usual two.

Dropping Holding, the versatile Ben White could return to his natural position to partner Gabriel Magalhaes. Then, having often deputised in such a role for Scotland, Kieran Tierney could be a surprise addition to take up that final spot on the left-hand side of the defence.

This would then free up Oleksandr Zinchenko to enjoy a more advanced wing-back role but does force Bukayo Saka slightly deeper to occupy the other flank.

Given the absence of their Swiss midfield general and Fabio Vieira's disappointing campaign thus far, Jorginho's vast experience will be called upon to help them through this clash. The Portuguese midfielder has enjoyed just three league starts, with an average rating of just 6.72 across his 20 lacklustre appearances, as per Sofascore.

Pairing the "world-class" £110k-per-week Italian – as once dubbed by former Liverpool star Jose Enrique – with Thomas Partey could provide the perfect balance to unnerve the likes of Kevin De Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan.

Then, tasked with troubling Guardiola's fearsome backline is his old prodigy Gabriel Jesus. He is likely to spearhead a front three boasting Gabriel Martinelli and Martin Odegaard, forced to drift in from the right flank to spaces where he can truly affect the game.

Their Norwegian captain will likely prove pivotal in disrupting the hosts, with his creative intelligence matched only in the division by the mercurial Belgian on the opposition.

Predicted Arsenal XI (3-4-3): Ramsdale; Tierney, Gabriel, White; Saka, Partey, Jorginho, Zinchenko; Odegaard, Jesus, Martinelli.

Liverpool’s "Promising" Gem Could Replace Konate

Jurgen Klopp has brought through a whole raft of youngsters into the Liverpool first team since arriving back in 2015.

With Trent Alexander-Arnold, Curtis Jones, Harvey Elliot and more recently Stefan Bajcetic all making their mark in the senior side in recent years, the Liverpool academy is bearing fruit that’s for sure.

Could the German be about to unearth the next big thing with defender Billy Koumetio? With change afoot ahead of next season, the 20-year-old may just emerge into prominence.

Who is Billy Koumetio?

The Frenchman arrived at the Anfield side in 2019 from US Orleans aged just 16 and his talent was obvious, with journalist Mohamed Bouhafsi lauding him as “promising” with the defender earmarked as a future first-team star.

It wouldn’t be long before he made history, with the centre-back becoming Liverpool’s youngest-ever player to feature in the Champions League aged just 18 years and 25 days. Indeed, Klopp looked as though he had another prodigy in the making.

That day was special, particularly because the "incredible" young talent – as dubbed by his manager – happened to be a ball boy on the night of that famous 4-0 win over Barcelona at Anfield. Clearly, Europe's most prestigious competition already has a big place in Koumetio's heart.

Klopp signed Ibrahima Konate in 2021 and the French defender was looked upon as the ideal mentor for Koumetio, with the youngster aiming to eventually take over from him in the centre of the Reds' defence in the coming years.

He was sent out on loan to Austria Vienna this season to experience first-team football at senior level and after making five appearances he was recalled in January. During his short stay in Austria, he won 60% of his duels, made 3.4 clearances and one tackle per game, certainly proving he can perform at a high level.

The decision to terminate his loan early could be because Klopp wants to keep a close eye on the player as he plays for the U21 side and since January he has featured eight times in Premier League 2, scoring once.

Ibrahima Konate for Liverpool

Although Konate is just 23 years old, if he continues his fine form at Liverpool then there will no doubt be a host of potential suitors lining up to take away from the club and instead of spending millions to replace him, Koumetio could be ready to replace him.

With nothing but European spots to play for between now and the end of the season, Klopp may soon give some youngsters a run-out. The young French sensation could be the future of the defence and all he needs is a chance to impress.

Harry Kane among ‘main options’ for Man Utd

Manchester United still see Tottenham superstar Harry Kane as one of their ‘main options’ this summer, according to reliable journalist David Ornstein.

The Lowdown: Kane constantly linked with move

The 29-year-old has enjoyed another highly impressive season for Spurs, scoring 20 goals in 27 Premier League appearances and also breaking the club’s scoring record.

Kane’s future looks to be up in the air, however, and United have been linked with a move for him numerous times recently, as well as over the years in general.

The Red Devils badly need an elite striker to come in during the summer transfer window and the England captain could be the man who fits the bill most.

The Latest: New update emerges

According to The Athletic‘s Ornstein, United see Kane as ‘among the main options’ to sign at the end of the season, as they weigh up potential candidates.

It is stressed that Spurs are ‘not even contemplating a sale’, however, so it may not be easy for them to get their man.

The Verdict: Last chance for a big move

Kane has remained very loyal to Spurs, despite their complete lack of trophies during his career there, but this summer could be the one that sees him want to leave, and Tottenham may not have much choice in the matter if he does not sign a new deal – they cannot afford to lose such an asset for free in 2024.

The 53-goal England legend will be 30 by the time next season starts and this year surely represents the last chance for him to gain a genuinely huge move elsewhere.

Kane couldn’t be a more perfect fit for United, with the Spurs ace possessing both relentless goalscoring prowess – he has scored 203 times in 309 Premier League outings – but also playmaking abilities that see him drop deep and allow space in behind for the wide men like Marcus Rashford.

Antonio Conte has rightly described Kane as a ‘world-class’ footballer and he is someone who could turn United into genuine title contenders, such is his quality.

Qatari links may lead to Kylian Mbappe deal for Man Utd

YouTuber Mark Goldbridge has claimed that if Manchester United are bought by Qatari-linked Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani, “there might be a situation” where Kylian Mbappe joins in the future, while the likes of Harry Maguire go to Paris Saint-Germain.

What’s the latest on the Qatar-linked bid for Man United?

The Glazers may well be looking to sell the Premier League club in the near future and so a number of interested parties have been tipped as possible new Man Utd owners.

Indeed, alongside Sheikh Al Thani’s bid, British billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe and a third “mystery” US bidder have all been reported in the media as having made offers for the Glazers to consider.

Of course, the ownership group already have strong ties to PSG and it remains to be seen if the Qatar-based consortium can get passed UEFA rules to own both clubs who of course regularly play in the Champions League.

While speaking about it all on The United Stand, Goldbridge pointed out that the Red Bull-owned clubs in Salzburg and Leipzig often both play in the same European competition and are allowed to do so despite being owned by the same company.

He explained: “That’s my point. There’s already two clubs in Europe that play in the same tournament in Europe and they feed each other players, so I don’t think it would be unprecedented.”

Goldbridge then suggested that the club would have to be “subtle” to avoid “dodgy” transfers but could end up agreeing to some exciting deals with PSG if a relationship was established.

He said: “It won’t happen anyway, it will be way more subtle than that. We won’t have a situation where [Marco] Verratti and Mbappe come to Man Utd for £5m and Maguire and [Scott] McTominay go to PSG for £100m. That would be dodgy.

“But you might have a situation where Mbappe leaves PSG and comes to Man Utd because of the relationship he’s got with the Qatari ownership of PSG and they’ve got close ties with our ownership – that might happen.”

What could a Qatari bid mean for Mbappe to MUFC and Maguire to PSG?

Interestingly enough, there have already been reports in The Sun that Harry Maguire could end up joining PSG in the summer for a touted £50m transfer fee.

That rumour, as far-fetched as it sounds, might be something the Ligue 1 outfit want to pursue regardless of any relationship with Man Utd – especially seeing as the Glazers may not even end up selling.

But if there is any truth to the report, then you can see how negotiations could be made less complicated in the summer if the Red Devils are owned by the Qatari-linked Sheikh Al Thani.

And so, in theory, if a deal was sorted this could then open the door for other future transfers, potentially such as Mbappe, who has been urged to join the club in recent times, so perhaps it wouldn’t be too out of the ordinary if United can put themselves in a position to fund such a move.

Spurs send scouts to watch Morten Hjulmand

An update has emerged on Tottenham Hotspur and their interest in signing central midfielder Morten Hjulmand in the summer transfer window…

What’s the latest on Morten Hjulmand to Tottenham Hotspur?

According to Calciomercato, Spurs have been sending scouts to watch the Lecce gem in action in the Serie A this season as sporting director Fabio Paratici gathers information on the 23-year-old.

The report claims that the Italian side rejected an offer of €13m (£11.5m) from Southampton during the January transfer window as they did not want to cash in on him until the summer, although it remains to be seen how much they will demand for his services now.

It is stated, however, that Tottenham will face competition for his signature from AS Roma, Napoli, and Borussia Dortmund, with the former two having already held talks with Lecce.

Can Hjulmand replace Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg?

Paratici could now land Antonio Conte the dream heir to Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s position in the side by swooping to sign his compatriot in the summer.

The Danish international, who captained Southampton earlier in his career, is a leader on the pitch for Spurs and Hjulmand has been lauded as a ‘leader and captain’ on and off the field for Lecce, which suggests that they are both vocal, encouraging, presences in the middle of the park.

Hojbjerg, 27, has been in fine form in the Premier League this season. He has averaged a Sofascore rating of 7.22 across 23 outings and made three tackles and interceptions per game, winning 54% of his duels, whilst also completing 89% of his attempted passes.

Hjulmand, meanwhile, has averaged a Sofascore rating of 6.95 in 21 Serie A outings. The 23-year-old battler, who was hailed by journalist Alvaro Canibe as having a “remarkable” campaign, has made an eye-catching five tackles and interceptions per match, winning 58% of his battles, whilst completing 79% of his passes.

This comes after the gem averaged a score of 7.13 and made 3.9 tackles and interceptions per outing in the second division of Italian football for Lecce last term across 37 appearances.

His passing efficiency is not as impressive as Hojbjerg’s but the midfielder is playing in a team that is slogging it out in the bottom half of the Serie A and he may not have the chance to play it safe in dominant possession, as the current Spurs enforcer can in fourth-place.

Lecce’s standing in the Italian top-flight also suggests that Hjulmand has more opportunities to make defensive actions, which would explain his numbers being greater than the Tottenham man’s, however, his efficiency in those duels remains impressive as it highlights his strength and skill in winning possession back for his side.

Therefore, the 23-year-old could be the long-term heir to Hojbjerg as both players are defensive-minded midfielders who have the quality to be leaders for their side on the pitch, whilst moving to Tottenham could allow the Lecce star to improve his passing.

West Ham missed out on Arnautovic 2.0

West Ham missed out on signing Sheraldo Becker on transfer deadline day and the Union Berlin forward could have been the next Marko Arnautovic at the London Stadium.

Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg claimed that Becker received interest from both Everton and West Ham on deadline day but he later reported that the 27-year-old wanted to stay with the Bundesliga side after their sensational start to the 2022/23 campaign.

Urs Fischer’s side sit just one point behind Bayern Munich in the German top flight, with Becker key to their surprise title challenge so far this season with journalist Josh Bunting full of praise for the former Ajax man earlier in the season.

He tweeted: “Sheraldo Becker in this team just fits perfectly, not just clinical but he’s also creative.”

The Suriname international boasts an impressive seven goals and four assists in just 18 Bundesliga appearances, with WhoScored awarding him a superb 6.97 rating for his performances.

Considering no player in David Moyes’ squad has contributed to more than four goals in the Premier League so far this season, it is clear that Becker could have been a quality addition in the final third.

The Hammers are one of the lowest scorers in the division, as both Gianluca Scamacca and Michail Antonio have failed to live up to expectations so far this term, while new signing Danny Ings is set for a spell on the sidelines after picking up an injury on his debut.

With Moyes’ side undoubtedly in a relegation battle this season, with their woes in front of goal a huge factor for their poor form, it seems clear that the Hammers are missing a goalscoring forward such as Arnautovic, with the Austrian hitting 22 goals and 12 assists in 65 appearances for the east London outfit.

Coincidentally, according to FBref, the current Bologna forward is the third-most similar player to Becker when compared to other strikers from Europe’s top leagues.

This season has seen the two forwards register close stats with regard to goals per shot (0.23 vs 0.24), progressive passes (19 vs 22) and dribbles attempted (18 vs 17), with their ability to not only score but create and beat opponents being on a similar level.

Being clearly alike. West Ham may well end up regretting not bringing Becker to the London Stadium on deadline day.

Aston Villa ready to make Matteo Guendouzi move

Aston Villa are ready to look into a late move for Marseille midfielder Matteo Guendouzi, according to Football Insider.

The Lowdown: Two in…

Unai Emery has brought in two players in what is his first transfer window in charge at Villa Park. Full-back Alex Moreno has joined from Real Betis, while teenage forward Jhon Duran has arrived from Chicago Fire.

There could be more to come before Tuesday’s deadline, though, especially after NSWE promised the manager a ‘huge’ winter window budget and reports this week suggested he wants three more signings.

The Latest: Guendouzi next?

Football Insider shared a story on Friday morning regarding Villa and Guendouzi. They claimed that Villa are ready to ‘pounce’ when it comes to a late window move, with talks already held over a possible transfer.

Marseille value Guendouzi at £30m and Emery has even made contact with the player, explaining how he would fit into his Villa Park plans.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/aston-villa-latest-news-5/” title=”Aston Villa latest news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Upgrade?

Guendouzi has actually made more appearances under Emery than he has under any other manager, and you could make the argument that the Frenchman would be an upgrade on Villa’s current midfield options.

The 23-year-old, dubbed a ‘monster’ in the making by talent scout Jacek Kulig, has outperformed every Villa midfielder so far this season, as per WhoScored, with his most effective performances coming as an out-and-out central midfielder.

He would also offer plenty of versatility due to being able to play as a defensive and attacking midfielder, and you’d like to think he still has room to improve before hitting his prime, so a reunion between player and manager could make sense in the Midlands.

No Leeds bid for Azzedine Ounahi

Journalist Beren Cross has revealed that Leeds United are yet to make any more bids for new players since Max Wober arrived amid links to Azzedine Ounahi.

What’s the word?

According to a recent report in news outlet  Foot Mercato, the Whites are keen on signing the Moroccan midfielder this winter and even recently put in a bid for the player.

Leeds have already made moves to strengthen their squad in January, signing 24-year-old defender Wober from Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg to a contract that runs until 2027.

And while they may well be keen on bringing in some more signings over the coming weeks, according to Cross (as of January 9) they had yet to make an official bid for anyone else.

When writing an article for LeedsLive, Cross explained: “As of yesterday, no bids had gone in for any players since Wober, so unless that’s changed today then they haven’t gone in for Ounahi yet.

“I think it would be one forward and, if they can get it done, a midfielder too to compensate for [Mateusz] Klich’s exit.”

Transfer priorities…

Jesse Marsch may well feel as though his side may need a new body to come in and add some depth to the middle of the park as  Klich has just departed for an MLS side.

However, if Cross’ reporting is fully accurate, it sounds as though they might prioritise a new forward instead. Seeing as Wober made his debut in the FA Cup on the weekend as a midfielder, coming on after 60 minutes for Darko Gyabi, then perhaps he’ll be asked to help fill the void in that part of the pitch.

If that’s the case, it does suggest that the club might not be quite soon keen to land Ounahi as some claims have recently suggested. Instead, perhaps there is more truth to the reports the club are closing in on a move for Hoffenheim forward Georginio Rutter.

Arsenal submit fresh Mudryk transfer bid

Arsenal have now submitted a new proposal to Shakhtar Donetsk for the potential addition of Mykhaylo Mudryk in the January transfer window.

What’s the latest?

The reliable transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has now claimed the Gunners have made a fresh approach to the Ukrainian side for the services of their 21-year-old winger. Edu Gaspar has already seen one approach rejected by Shakhtar for Mudryk but the Brazilian has now submitted an improved offer:

“Now we can say that Arsenal have improved their proposal. I’m still checking to understand how much Arsenal have offered because now all sources want to keep things quiet after Shakhtar rejected the opening proposal. It was €40m plus €20m in add-ons, Shakhtar said no.”

Mudryk has certainly not shied away from voicing his thoughts on a potential move to north London with the journalist Ben Jacobs claiming it would be a dream for the winger to join Arsenal.

And even in the weeks since his interview with Jacobs, the 21-year-old has been dropping some cryptic hints on social media about potentially linking up with Mikel Arteta’s side.

Having seen their initial proposal for the Ukrainian rejected by Shakhtar, it now seems as if the Gunners may have taken a step closer to potentially bringing the winger to north London.

Title boost

Arsenal have made an exceptional start to the campaign which has seen them climb to the top of the table and with a seven-point gap to the chasing Manchester City.

Given they find themselves in perhaps an unexpectedly good position in the table, perhaps the Gunners look to make the most of this opportunity in the January window and strengthen their title charge with some big additions.

And in Mudryk, they would certainly be getting a potentially huge addition after what he has shown during his time recently for Shakhtar across all competitions.

In the league, the 21-year-old has returned seven goals and six assists in just 12 appearances as well as three goals and two assists in just six Champions League appearances (via Transfermarkt).

Despite Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka making an electric start to the campaign, Mudryk has certainly been able to provide a comparable return which could only push the current Gunners duo with more competition potentially added to the squad (via FBref).

If the Gunners were able to bring in a player of Mudryk’s quality it would be interesting to see how he would fit into the squad, but it would certainly be a headache which Arteta would welcome.
