Angelo Mathews replaces injured Matheesha Pathirana in Sri Lanka's World Cup squad

Allrounder Angelo Mathews has replaced fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana in Sri Lanka’s World Cup squad. Pathirana had suffered a shoulder injury while playing Pakistan in Hyderabad on October 10, and was ruled out of Sri Lanka’s subsequent matches against Australia and Netherlands.Mathews had already linked up with the squad ahead of the match against Netherlands, having been called up as a travelling reserve along side fast bowler Dushmantha Chameera.Related

Former captain Mathews, 36, last played an ODI against Afghanistan in June. He comes with plenty of experience on this stage though, having played the World Cups in 2011, 2015 and 2019. He was Sri Lanka’s captain during the 2015 edition.Pathirana is Sri Lanka’s second injury loss this World Cup after their captain Dasun Shanaka was ruled out due to a quadriceps tear, which he had also picked up during the match against Pakistan. Chamika Karunaratne had taken Shanaka’s place in Sri Lanka’s squad, with wicketkeeper-batter Kusal Mendis standing in as captain. They are also without legspinner Wanindu Hasaranga, who was ruled out of the World Cup with an injury. Before his injury, Pathirana was taken for as many as 185 runs in the 19 overs that he had bowled across matches against South Africa and Pakistan, with an economy rate of almost 10.Sri Lanka are looking for an upswing in form themselves, having registered their first win of the World Cup when they beat Netherlands by five wickets in Lucknow on Saturday, having lost three in a row till then. They are currently placed ninth on the points table.

From uncertain starter to leading the side, how Shanto's career turned around

Stand-in captain urges his batters to convert their starts and forge partnerships as Bangladesh look to level the series

ESPNcricinfo staff25-Sep-2023Najmul Hossain Shanto’s life has become a “then and now” meme. Every time he does something meaningful in 2023, it gets compared to last year when he was really struggling. His career has seen a complete reversal in fortunes this year, with the BCB now naming him the captain for the third ODI against New Zealand. On September 25 last year, Shanto wasn’t picked for the first T20I against UAE. Bangladesh were in Dubai for a two-match series for their build-up to the T20 World Cup. Shanto missed both matches, and was an uncertain starter for the World Cup. His struggles at various times last year were fodder for social-media mocking. In the space of exactly 12 months, Shanto has completely turned around his international career. He established himself in the T20I side with a decent World Cup in Australia and followed it with a strong performance in BPL 2023. This year he finally seems to have cracked the ODIs while cementing his Test place too. Now, with both Shakib Al Hasan and Litton Das rested ahead of the grind of travelling in India for the ODI World Cup, Shanto’s rise in form and involvement in the field has meant he has been asked to lead the side.Related

Shanto to captain Bangladesh in third ODI against New Zealand

“It is a matter of huge pride for me as a cricketer,” Shanto said. “My family is proud too. I am enjoying this opportunity provided to me by the cricket board. I have had a good journey so far. I have a long way to go yet. I am enjoying every moment regardless of whether it is good or bad. I will try to give my best if there’s more opportunity in the future to lead the side. It is every cricketer’s dream to lead their country.”Bangladesh’s winning streak against New Zealand at home since 2010 has been halted – they can still level the series – but Shanto says there are no nerves in the dressing room.

“We have to focus on building bigger partnerships once we get a good start. We are working on set batters ensuring they make it big”

“I think it is a happy occasion,” he said. “I want to ensure that the team finishes well in this series looking ahead to the World Cup. I believe the team is in a good position. I don’t know what happened in 2008 [the last time New Zealand won an ODI series in Bangladesh] but I also think we don’t need to think about it. The main thing is to do well tomorrow.”Bangladesh’s inconsistency with the bat in their last ten completed ODI innings has been a headache. Shanto has bailed them out at times, but he believed that forging partnerships would help the team overcome this problem.”It is challenging for the top order to bat in these [hot] weather conditions,” he said. “We started well in the second ODI. We were 54 for 1 [after ten overs]. So we have to focus on building bigger partnerships once we get a good start. We are working on set batters ensuring they make it big.”[Back-to-back wickets] can happen for any number of reasons. It is always difficult for new batters. The important thing is that the set batter continues for long. They must stay at the wicket. They must play a big innings.”Bangladesh will leave for India on September 27, the day after the third ODI against New Zealand. Their practice matches are on September 29 and October 2, so the tight schedule means they have to take as much confidence as they can into the World Cup. Shanto said that it is not only about playing in similar conditions in Dhaka so that they don’t find a lot of surprises in India, it is also about beating New Zealand so that they round off their preparatory part well.”We want to finish this series well. We don’t know what type of wickets we get in India. I am guessing the wickets will be pretty good. We need to remember that there are some wickets in India where big scores aren’t always possible. We will play tomorrow’s match according to the conditions, and if we finish well, we will have a good preparation.”

Alongside Obi: Man Utd can unleash their own Nwaneri in 17-year-old starlet

Manchester United face a tough assignment on Sunday afternoon, with Arsenal coming to Old Trafford in the Premier League. The Red Devils will be hoping they can pick up their first win in a couple of games.

United have drawn their last two games 1-1, firstly against Fulham in the FA Cup, who promptly knocked them out on penalties. In midweek, Ruben Amorim’s side drew away from home against Real Sociedad in the Europa League, with a goal from Joshua Zirkzee giving them the lead before the La Liga side equalised with a penalty.

Joshua Zirkzee

Bouncing back with a win against Mikel Arteta’s side would be timely, to say the least. Amorim could well select a couple of former Gunners players at Old Trafford, too.

The former Arsenal players United could unleash

In the summer, United brought in highly-rated young striker Chido Obi from the Gunners. His contract at the Emirates Stadium expired almost one year ago now, and United pounced. After impressing in the academy, he has since gone on to play in the first team.

Obi has played three games for Amorim’s side so far, impressing in the FA Cup recently against Fulham. Across normal time and extra time, he had three big chances, and showed real initiative to fashion opportunities for himself.

The other ex-Arsenal star United could unleash on Sunday is Ayden Heaven. The defender joined the Red Devils in January, as one of Amorim’s first signings. His contract was set to expire in the summer, but United paid a £1.5m compensation fee to bring him to the club sooner.

Heaven made his first appearance in the FA Cup penalty loss to Fulham last weekend. He played the entirety of extra time and made a big impression at left centre-back.

He received a 7/10 from Goal journalist Richard Martin, who said the United number 26 was ‘excellent’.

Former Arsenal talents Obi and Heaven might not be the only youngsters United to start against the Gunners, however.

Man Utd could have unearthed their own Nwaneri

One of the most exciting talents in the Premier League this season is Arsenal’s Ethan Nwaneri. He has been excellent this term for his boyhood club, scoring eight times and grabbing an assist in 27 appearances.

Well, United can’t unleash Nwaneri this weekend, but they could start someone very similar, Jack Fletcher. Like the Arsenal wonderkid, the England under-18 international is a 17-year-old left-footer, who typically operates in an attacking midfield berth.

The youngster has made a big impression for United’s academy sides this season. Across all competitions, he has played 15 games, scoring six goals and registering six assists, mainly operating as a number ten.

It is not too far-fetched to think that the “marvellous” youngster, as he was described by the Daily Mail’s Nathan Salt, will be involved against the Gunners.

Fletcher, who is the son of United legend Darren, has been on the bench five times this season, including once under Amorim against Tottenham Hotspur.

Chalkboard

In United under-18’s recent FA Youth Cup triumph against the Gunners at the Emirates Stadium, Fletcher actually got himself on the scoresheet.

The youngster’s goal was described as “stunning” by Laurie Whitwell, journalist for The Athletic. Impressively, it was taken on his weak foot, his right foot.

Playing Fletcher against Arsenal would be a bold call from Amorim. He is yet to make his first-team debut, and this would certainly be throwing him in at the deep end. However, his quality is clear to see.

If Amorim was to bring Fletcher into the side, he would certainly hope he can replicate Nwaneri’s impact in the Gunners’ first team, and have a positive impact for United.

Man Utd might have another academy star on their hands

1 ByJoe Nuttall Mar 8, 2025

Amorim has unearthed the new Rashford at Man Utd & it's not Garnacho

Manchester United have produced countless talents out of their impressive academy system, with attacker Alejandro Garnacho one of the latest to emerge and thrive in the first-team.

The Argentine originally joined from Atlético Madrid back in 2020, linking up with the youth team before making the jump and seamlessly transitioning into the professional game.

He’s since made 130 appearances for the Red Devils, scoring 23 times, with eight of his efforts coming during the ongoing campaign at Old Trafford.

Ruben Amorim has continued to make him an integral part of his plans, as seen by his tally of 14 starts since his appointment at the end of November.

However, the same can’t be said for one player who evidently doesn’t appear to be in the 40-year-old’s plans after allowing him to depart on a temporary basis in January.

Marcus Rashford’s time at Manchester United

Academy graduate Marcus Rashford was frozen out of the United squad after Amorim’s arrival, making just six appearances after he took over the reins in the North West.

However, he’s gone out on loan to Aston Villa, recapturing his best form, already registering four assists under Unai Emery – leading to a recall to Thomas Tuchel’s England squad.

His time with his boyhood club has been a roaring success, registering 138 goals in 426 appearances, and it all started with his debut in the Europa League way back in 2016, scoring a double against FC Midtjylland.

The 27-year-old made himself an immediate fan-favourite given the impact on that night in February nine years ago, with not many predicting him to be as successful as he has been.

However, in the present day, one other Red Devils talent has the opportunity to follow in his footsteps after his own impressive performance during his first European outing for the club.

The player who could be United’s next Rashford

Performing on a European stage is a daunting task, let alone for your first professional start, something which Rashford did with ease all them years ago.

Centre-back Ayden Heaven has also managed to do just that, starring in the triumph against Real Sociedad on Thursday night in what was his first start for United after his summer move from Arsenal.

There’s no doubt the 18-year-old was a signing made for the academy, but after such a display, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him in Amorim’s first-team plans going forward.

The youngster has benefitted from the current injury crisis within the defensive department, taking his opportunity to shine at Old Trafford with both hands against the LaLiga outfit.

Heaven featured for the entirety of the clash, completing 86% of his passes and registering 64 touches – looking calm and composed in possession despite his tender age.

He also won 100% of the ground duels he entered, making four clearances and winning one tackle, helping the Red Devils reach the next stage in their pursuit of a trophy this campaign.

The defender, who was dubbed “exceptional” by Liam Canning, has certainly given Amorim a selection headache when other players return from their injury setbacks.

He’s replicated Rashford in impressing on his debut, which came in a European competition, with the centre-back having the potential to replicate the Englishman’s success at Old Trafford.

Should Heaven get anywhere near the levels the attacker has achieved in Manchester, he will be an absolute bargain, having the chance to cement his place at the back and play a vital role in their quest to return to glory.

Arsenal now leading Spurs in race to sign "extraordinary" £58m striker

Arsenal are now leading Tottenham Hotspur in the race to sign an “extraordinary” striker, who has emerged as Mikel Arteta’s top target ahead of the summer transfer window, according to a report.

Arteta's striker search

Arteta was known to be keen on signing a striker in January, with the likes of Ollie Watkins and Dušan Vlahović among the players linked with moves to north London, but it ultimately wasn’t possible to get a new forward through the door.

Since then, the Gunners’ title hopes have been seriously dented, with Kai Havertz being ruled out for the season, and they have now started to work on bringing in a new striker in the summer.

Plans have been put in place to hold talks with Inter’s Lautaro Martinez, who reportedly incoming sporting director Andrea Berta is believed to be a big fan of, while Napoli’s Victor Osimhen is also known to be a target, with a number of Premier League clubs keen on the Nigerian.

Another striker who has attracted widespread interest is RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko, with it recently being revealed that Arsenal are set to battle Tottenham for the forward’s signature.

However, according to a report from Football Insider, the Gunners have the edge over Spurs in the race to sign Sesko, as they have now moved ahead of their rivals in the race for his signature.

The north Londoners are said to be among the favourites to sign the Slovenian, who has now emerged as their top target for the summer transfer window.

Although the Leipzig star is contracted until 2029, there is a £58m release clause in his contract, which makes a summer move more likely – and he would prefer a move to Arsenal over Spurs.

"Extraordinary" Sesko impressing in Germany

The 21-year-old has scored 17 goals for Leipzig in all competitions this term, including four in the Champions League prior to his side’s exit from the competition, but he is far more than just a goalscorer.

Tony Cascarino has also praised the former RB Salzburg man for his dribbling ability, saying: “He will run at people and he will literally go around them.

“That’s the extraordinary thing he has got, I have not seen a 6 foot 5 player play like him. I have seen him in wide positions. He is not as traditional as a No 9, but he can certainly go into a deep area and pick up the ball and he will go past people.”

As such, it is exciting news that Arsenal are seemingly in a strong position to win the race for Sesko, and a release clause of just £58m seems very reasonable, given that he is young enough to lead the line for the Gunners for the next decade.

Everything you need to know about Sergino Dest's salary details playing for PSV

USMNT international Sergino Dest currently plays for Eredivisie side PSV, but he initially began his football journey with fierce rivals Ajax.

The American fullback attracted significant attention from top European clubs, including Barcelona and Bayern Munich, following a standout breakout season with the Amsterdam giants and he eventually chose to join Barcelona over the German side.

In addition to being a regular starter for the Dutch side, Dest also earns a substantial salary, making him one of the top earners at both the club and in the league. But exactly how much does he make?

Arsenal struck gold on "unplayable" star who’s worth way more than Mbeumo

The January transfer window has been open for over three weeks now, and much to their fans’ dismay, Arsenal are yet to make a signing.

The North Londoners’ season is hanging by a thread as they are out of the FA Cup, almost out of the League Cup, and it looks like they could fall away in the Premier League.

Add to that the fact that Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Jesus are out with long-term injuries, and it’s impossible to deny Mikel Arteta’s need for attacking reinforcements.

Now, in their defence, it does appear as if the club are trying to do something, as there have been near-constant reports linking them to forwards such as Benjamin Šeško and Matheus Cunha, but it could be argued their greatest area of need is off the right.

Interestingly, the title chasers have already been linked with Bryan Mbeumo this month, who’d be an ideal transfer for this position, but it remains to be seen if that’s a deal that can be done, although, if it is, the Brentford ace would still be worth millions less than one of Arsenal’s other frontline options.

Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo

Why Arsenal should sign Mbeumo

So, it was only last week that Arsenal were linked with a move for Mbeumo that could cost up to £50m, and while that is undoubtedly a lot of money, we reckon it would be more than worth it.

For example, in just 27 appearances for Brentford last season, totalling 2079 minutes, the 25-year-old dynamo racked up a tally of nine goals and six assists, which comes to an impressive average of a goal involvement every 1.8 games, or every 138.6 minutes.

The former Troyes star has somehow done even better this season, racking up a haul of 13 goals and four assists in just 26 appearances totalling 2137 minutes.

That means the sensational Cameroonian is currently averaging a goal involvement every 1.52 games or every 125.7 minutes, which is incredible for a winger not playing for one of the ‘big six’.

Moreover, he’s not just stat padding against weaker opposition either; so far this season, the Avallon-born sharpshooter has scored or assisted a goal against Newcastle United, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur.

In short, Mbeumo has more than proven he’s worth £50m or more this season and should be a top target for Arsenal, although one of his potential teammates who’s not had quite as successful a campaign would still be worth millions more.

The Arsenal star worth millions more than Mbeumo

So, to get straight to the point, the Arsenal star in question is none other than Brazilian left-winger Gabriel Martinelli.

The 23-year-old joined the Gunner from then-fourth-tier Brazilian outfit Ituano in the summer of 2019 for a fee of £6m, which now looks like an incredible bargain as Football Transfers value him at up to a staggering €77m, which is about £65m, or £15m more than Mbeumo would cost.

That is an enormous sum of money, and while there might be more than a few of you who’d dispute it, there are some reasons behind it.

First, while he’s not had the best year and a half, the Guarulhos-born talent has remained reasonably effective.

For example, in 20 league appearances this season, he has scored six goals and provided two assists, while Chelsea’s Pedro Neto, who cost £54m in the summer, has scored once and provided two assists in 19 league games.
