Chelsea set to hold talks over signing £50m forward in the "coming days"

Chelsea are set to hold talks over signing a highly-rated forward imminently, with manager Enzo Maresca targeting potential replacements for Christopher Nkunku.

Chelsea eye new attacker as Nkunku agrees Bayern Munich terms

The Frenchman, who’s currently one of Chelsea’s top scorers in all competitions, is still just a bit-part member of the team when it comes to chances in the Premier League – with the vast majority of his goals coming in the Carabao Cup, FA Cup and Conference League.

ByEmilio Galantini Jan 22, 2025

Nkunku’s 13 goals and four assists in that period still represent a significant contribution, though, and the 27-year-old has performed very well when given the chance by Maresca.

As such, Chelsea would be weakened if the ex-RB Leipzig star were to depart, which is seen as a real possibility before deadline day on February 3. According to reliable media sources in Germany, Nkunku has agreed personal terms on a move to Bayern Munich, with Vincent Kompany’s side earmarking the versatile forward as a top transfer target.

He is rumoured to be frustrated by a lack of chances in the English top flight, prompting his eagerness to leave Stamford Bridge this transfer window, and Bayern are looking to take full advantage of this situation.

That being said, Chelsea won’t let Nkunku leave for less than £60 million, so there is still work to be done on a fee between clubs. As well as Nkunku, Cesare Casadei and Renato Veiga are expected to leave Chelsea, while exits are also possible for Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Carney Chukwuemeka, Axel Disasi and João Félix if the right offers arrive (The Telegraph).

Mykhailo Mudryk’s recent failed drug test also raises the chances of a potential departure for the Ukranian, even if it may not be in this window, so Chelsea could actually require a new forward soon – despite their strength in depth right now.

This plethora of possible departures has motivated west London transfer chiefs to look at new attacking options, including Man United winger Alejandro Garnacho.

Chelsea set to hold imminent talks over signing Alejandro Garnacho

According to The Telegraph and reliable reporter Matt Law, Chelsea are set to hold talks over signing Garnacho “in the coming days”.

David Ornstein reported last week that Chelsea made an initial approach for Garnacho, and it now appears that they’re firming up their interest in the Argentine as they weigh up attacking targets.

Law writes that Jamie Gittens and Mathys Tel are other players under consideration by Chelsea, with talks set to take place over the Bundesliga duo as well. Garnacho, who’s bagged eight goals and five assists in all competitions this season, is thought to be valued at around £50 million by the Red Devils.

Chelsea do face stiff competition from Napoli, though, with Antonio Conte’s side already having a bid rejected for the 20-year-old. It is added by Law that both sides are seeking clarity over his temperament before formally pressing ahead with a bid.

He’d revive Mainoo: Man Utd looking at "out of this world" £50m star

How things can change. It was only a matter of months ago that Manchester United starlet Kobbie Mainoo was the cream of the crop, with the teenage sensation capping off a fine debut campaign in senior football by playing his part in England’s surge to the Euro 2024 final.

Belatedly brought into the United team by Erik ten Hag for his first Premier League start against Everton in November 2023, following an injury in pre-season, the local lad’s Man of the Match display at Goodison Park set the tone for a dazzling end to 2023/24 on an individual basis.

A notable high point for the academy graduate came away to Wolverhampton Wanderers in February, with Mainoo sealing all three points in dramatic circumstances, jinking his way through the home defence before curling into the corner in exquisite fashion. A star was born.

And yet, the midfielder’s return to Molineux on Boxing Day epitomised that the journey for any young player is not linear, nor smooth, with the 19-year-old’s shoddy showing coming amid what has been a disappointing 2024/25 campaign thus far.

Mainoo's performance vs Wolves

On what was just his 50th first-team appearance for United, Mainoo – who has endured a stop-start season due to injury – ‘looked a shadow of the player’ who sparkled last term, as per Samuel Luckhurst, having struggled in the centre of the park.

Kobbie Mainoo

Now deployed in a midfield two alongside summer signing Manuel Ugarte, the Stockport native appeared somewhat off the pace, having won just two of his eight duels, while failing to complete a single dribble and losing the ball on 11 occasions.

There were some signs of life – including a teasing cross that Rasmus Hojlund came agonisingly close to getting on the end of – yet, in truth, it was no real surprise when Mainoo’s number went up to be withdrawn on the hour mark.

The sight of the rising star clipping the ball into touch on a handful of occasions really was an indication of his dwindling confidence, with Ruben Amorim needing to find a way to revive what is undoubtedly a “generational talent” – as hailed by the aforementioned Hojlund.

Perhaps, the addition of a new midfielder in 2025 could be what is needed to get Mainoo firing once again…

Man Utd's search for a midfielder

According to The Athletic’s Mark Critchley – alongside David Ornstein – the Red Devils are believed to be monitoring Atalanta star, Ederson, at present, amid the Brazilian’s ‘impressive displays in Serie A’.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

This follows previous claims from Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg, who suggested that the 25-year-old is among the targets that United are “seriously considering”, having “scouted him multiple times”.

While The Athletic does not reveal any potential price tag for the midfield destroyer, Plettenberg claimed last week that the Serie A side could demand a fee of up to €60m (£50m).

Atalanta's Ademola Lookman celebrates scoring their third goal withEdersonand Matteo Ruggeri and completes his hat-trick.

Why Ederson's arrival could be perfect for Mainoo

The Atalanta man may not be the most high-profile of names, yet he has been earning rave reviews for his form in Italy in recent seasons, with former England boss Fabio Capello among those leading the plaudits:

Part of the side that claimed Europa League glory last season following a 3-0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen, the in-demand talent – who put in a “monsterclass” in that showpiece win, in the words of Statman Dave – could be the perfect partner for Mainoo in the centre of the park.

The 6 foot machine has chipped in with two goals and one assist in 17 Serie A in 2024/25, although his key strength lies in winning back possession, shown by the fact that he averages 2.3 tackles and interceptions per game, having recovered 5.5 balls per game also.

That supports claims from his club colleague Marten de Roon, who said that it is his “speed and recovery ability that no one else has”. He’s simply a true workhorse.

What also sets him apart from the aforementioned Ugarte, for instance, is his ability to break the lines and influence proceedings in an attacking sense, showcased by the fact that he averages 6.43 progressive passes per 90 across the last 365 days. The Uruguayan, by contrast, averages just 3.42 in that regard.

That ensures that he could be the man to pick out a marauding Mainoo in advanced areas, with Ederson also providing the benefit of having operated in a 3-4-3 system in Bergamo under Gian Piero Gasperini.

The same could be said of Ugarte, yet that pairing with Mainoo simply isn’t working at present, hence the need to acquire a fresh face – preferably in the New Year.

Equally, there’s also a world in which Ederson could partner Ugarte, thus freeing up Mainoo to take on one of the two number ten berths behind the striker, with the presence of two such athletic midfielders behind him allowing the undoubtedly gifted diamond to shine once again.

The incident occurred in the first half at Anfield, when Tarkowski, in an attempt to clear the ball, followed through with his challenge and caught Mac Allister high on his left leg. Despite the severity of the contact, referee Sam Barrott opted to show only a yellow card. VAR official Paul Tierney reviewed the incident but chose not to intervene, allowing the on-field decision to stand.

Barcelona look set to complete a second full season at their temporary home due to Camp Nou not being ready on time to move back in any sooner. The club is reported by to have informed its members by email that all remaining home fixtures will be played at the Montjuic venue, which served as the focal point of the 1992 Olympics, the fourth time in recent months that a return to Camp Nou has been pushed back.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Even with the renovation project not scheduled to be fully finished until 2026, Barcelona had hoped to be back playing games at Camp Nou this season, albeit at reduced capacity. The idea for the return to coincide with the club's 125th anniversary in November was canned. Further delays then came in November and January, with the latter still targeting a May return to Camp Nou. Now, however, the dream of playing football there at all this season is officially over. Leaked footage of the project in recent days appeared to show the work falling way behind schedule.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

The longer that Barcelona stay at the Lluis Companys, the more they financially lose out. It's not much more than half the size of Camp Nou and, with the majority of season ticket holders also staying away until Camp Nou is ready, matchday revenue is taking a hit. Last season, the estimates were that it cost the club €90m (£75.6m/$97.9m) in income they would otherwise have made.

  • Getty/BarcaStory

    WHAT NEXT?

It would be a hugely embarrassing blow if Barcelona still cannot return to Camp for the start of next season, after so many pushbacks in quick succession of late, with the club overpromising and underdelivering. Real Madrid, on the other hand, had a seamless renovation of the Santiago Bernabeu, although there was coincidentally a full season played at the Alfredo Di Stefano due to Covid-19 restrictions on crowds and public gatherings, which left the Bernabeu empty for an extended period.

98% passing, 105 touches: Arsenal’s non-scorer was immense vs Forest

Arsenal got a much-needed three points against Nottingham Forest at the Emirates Stadium to keep up with the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City at the top of the Premier League. The Gunners had previously gone three games without a win in all competitions, including a 1-1 draw away to Chelsea last time out.

It was a dominant performance from the Gunners, who put the men in Garibaldi Red to the sword in North London. Bukayo Saka gave his side the lead, thrashing in a shot following a mazy run after he picked up a loose ball.

Thomas Partey doubled the Gunners’ lead just seven minutes after half-time, before youngster Ethan Nwaneri scored his first-ever Premier League goal to seal the points. It was a lovely finish from the youngster, who drove forward into space and found Raheem Sterling out wide. The experienced winger pulled it back to Nwaneri who slotted the ball past Matz Sels.

It is a huge three points for Mikel Arteta’s men, who will now be hoping to get some momentum ahead of a huge month over the festive period. There were certainly some standout performers from those in an Arsenal shirt this afternoon.

Arsenal’s best performers vs. Forest

Unsurprisingly, Saka was one of the main man against Forest, putting in a superb performance to go along with his goal. The England international stood out from a statistical standpoint, too. As per Sofascore, the winger created four chances, completed two dribbles and had a pass accuracy of 88%.

Complimenting a phenomenal display from Saka was Gunners skipper Martin Odegaard. The Norwegian, who created a whopping six chances, received a 9/10 for his performance from GOAL journalist Charles Watts. He summed up Odegaard’s performance in one word, “outstanding”.

It was a fantastic influence off the bench for Nwaneri. Although the youngster only made an eight-minute cameo, he certainly left his mark. He was always involved and had 16 touches of the ball and completed 100% of his passes, 11 from 11 to be specific. The teenager also created one chance, and, of course, got a memorable first Premier League goal.

However, it was not just the Gunners’ attacking players who stood out against Forest. Their defenders were superb, keeping a clean sheet and never really giving the visitors a sniff. One of the standout defensive players for Arsenal was William Saliba.

Saliba’s stats vs. Forest

Arsenal journalist Will Balsam was full of praise for the French defender, explaining that it was one of his “best performances” of the 2024/25 campaign so far. It has not been the smoothest start to the season for Saliba, but he looked much more like his old self against the East Midlands outfit.

Arsenal centre-back William Saliba

The France international was, as usual, composed on the ball, a key component of the Gunners’ build-up play. He made life tough for Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi, who got the nod over the in-form Chris Wood. Saliba ensured the Nigerian international fed off scraps at the Emirates Stadium.

Indeed, his stats from the game were superb. He was flawless on the ball, having 105 touches and completing 98% of his passes, specifically 96 out of 98 he attempted. Saliba also won three from four ground duels.

Watts was full of praise for the French defender following his impressive performance. He gave him a 7/10 rating for his efforts, explaining that ‘he seemed to really enjoy’ the battle against Awoniyi, describing his performance as ‘solid’.

It was an assured performance from Saliba, who will be hoping he can continue this run of form as Arsenal look to climb back up towards the top of the Premier League table.

Incredible Rangers teen is already Ibrox’s answer to Lennon Miller

Glasgow Rangers haven’t really produced a standout academy talent in the Ibrox ranks since Alan Hutton, who was sold 16 years ago.

Hutton broke through into the first team during the 2003/04 campaign, going on to play over 100 times for Rangers before Walter Smith accepted a bid of around £9m from south of the border in January 2008, which saw the defender leave.

Alan Hutton

There is a case for Nathan Patterson to be included in the list of finest academy graduates since Hutton’s departure, but he failed to dislodge James Tavernier from the coveted right-back position in the Gers side.

His potential saw Everton come in with a total bid of £16m, which was obviously far too good for the club to turn down.

Philippe Clement signed just two Scotsmen during the summer – Connor Barron and Liam Kelly – with the bulk of his transfer dealings coming from abroad.

It is no secret that a strong Scottish core not only helps with the European squad quotas but also helps with the club’s identity. Smith’s excellent nine-in-a-row side from the 90s had the likes of Andy Goram, Richard Gough, Ian Durrant, Ian Ferguson and Ally McCoist leaving a lasting impression.

With the January transfer window fast approaching, could Clement perhaps lure one of Scotland’s finest young talents to Ibrox?

Rangers eyeing one of Scotland's best talents

Links to both sides of the Old Firm were natural given Liam Miller’s rise, as he has emerged as arguably the brightest talent Scotland have produced in recent years, certainly in the midfield.

Indeed, according to the Daily Mail, both Rangers and Celtic are showing plenty of interest in Miller, who could cost around £4m as Motherwell hold out for the best possible fee for their prized asset.

It is inevitable that the Steelmen will have to sell sooner rather than later, but who can begrudge them wanting the highest fee possible?

This means Clement will need to open up the coffers to lure the midfielder to Ibrox. Given Celtic’s domestic dominance, allowing them the chance to play in the Champions League, they have the upper hand, that’s for sure.

If the opportunity is there, however, the Gers must go all in for the 18-year-old.

Lennon Miller’s statistics for Motherwell this season

Since making his debut in 2022/23, Miller has already made 55 appearances for the Premiership side, scoring five goals and grabbing six assists.

It has been a remarkable rise for the youngster, who has yet to make his international debut, despite captaining his club and featuring in every single one of their games this term, registering seven goal contributions in the process.

Miller has also created five big chances, averages 2.1 key passes, 0.9 successful dribbles and wins 5.1 total duels per game in the top flight for Motherwell.

He is certainly showing maturity well beyond his tender age and there is no doubt he is going to be a future star for club and country.

If Rangers allow Celtic to snatch someone of Miller’s quality away from their grasp, then it would represent a massive, missed opportunity for Clement, especially as he could generate a profit for the club after a few years, such is his incredible potential.

Players such as Cole McKinnon, Alex Lowry and Leon King have shown glimpses of their vast talents in recent years, but they now need more chances to grow and demonstrate that they can deliver on the senior stage.

Leon King

Is there a youngster at the club who has a bigger ceiling than the three aforementioned players? Indeed, might he even be an even bigger talent than Miller?

Rangers' very own Liam Miller

The player in question here is Bailey Rice, who ironically joined the Glasgow side from Motherwell in the summer of 2022, rejecting an offer of a professional contract at the club to move to Ibrox.

Journalist Mark Hendry hailed the young midfielder as a “prospect” even before he linked up with the Light Blues, as Manchester City were also displaying a keen interest in bringing Rice south of the border.

Rangers was the next step for the Scot, as he would be given the chance to train alongside better players, while also having a chance to make inroads into securing minutes in the senior squad over the next couple of seasons. It didn’t take long for him to make an impression.

In The Pipeline

Football FanCast's In the Pipeline series aims to uncover the very best youth players in world football.

The 2022/23 campaign saw Rice make 21 appearances for the B side in the Lowland League and UEFA Youth League, where he scored twice and grabbed an assist too.

Later that season, Michael Beale gave Rice his senior debut against Livingston, coming off the bench in the dying minutes. What makes this even more remarkable is the young midfielder had captained the Scotland U17 side to a 7-0 victory over Switzerland in Spain just 24 hours prior.

He jetted back to Scotland in order to join the first-team squad, thus becoming the youngest player in the post-war era to make his league debut for the club.

Two more league appearances followed last season, as Rice continued his development, slowly easing into more senior training.

The defensive midfielder has a ridiculously high ceiling, although he hasn’t managed to play any minutes in the first team this season, despite being included in the matchday squad five times.

The rise of Miller is due to him being trusted in the Motherwell starting XI, and they are now being rewarded with a player who is capable of special things.

The same could be said for Rice if he could secure some consistent minutes under Clement. There is a fine player ready to be unearthed in the 18-year-old, but unless there is a significant injury crisis, he may have to wait for his next opportunity.

49ers to lose second Leeds chief in Elland Road restructure after Steinsson

Following the earlier exit of technical director Gretar Steinsson, the 49ers are reportedly set to lose yet another Leeds United chief to force a restructure away from the action at Elland Road.

Leeds set to off-pitch change

The Whites have only just lost Steinsson, as reported by The Athletic’s Nancy Froston, with the former technical director now set to transition into a new position with the 49ers’ operation. Those at Elland Road will reportedly replace the departed chief internally rather than seek a fresh option outside of the club. Whether that proves to be a wise decision remains to be seen, however.

His exit comes at a time when Leeds need stability in pursuit of promotion back to the Premier League at the second time of asking. Things are only set to become more complicated following Steinsson, however, with another departure reportedly on the cards.

According to TeamTalk, Leeds are now set to lose head of recruitment Jordan Miles amid a major reshuffle at Elland Road. Leaving the 49ers with plenty to think about, it will reportedly be football advisor and consultant Nick Hammond and football operations Adam Underwood who step up their respective roles and take more responsibility behind the scenes.

Journalist shares what he's heard out of Leeds on Manor Solomon's future

He’s yet to score for the club…

1 ByTom Cunningham Nov 8, 2024

Miles’ reported exit follows a difficult summer in which Leeds lost a number of key men and were forced to turn towards the transfer market. Welcoming the likes of Ao Tanaka and Largie Ramazani, Miles could consider the window job done amid such difficulties in what proved to be his final flurry of signings at the club.

Leeds reshuffle comes at a bad time

If Leeds were to undergo such change then they should have done so before the Championship season or summer transfer window had a chance to get underway. Now running the risk of turning the attention away from Daniel Farke’s side, the 49ers must hope to have got things right. On the recruitment front, the Whites’ most difficult task came in the summer, but that doesn’t take away from the importance of the January transfer window.

If Farke’s side still find themselves behind in the race for automatic promotion by the time that the winter window arrives, then Hammon and Underwood should be tasked with reinforcing the Leeds squad.

Already, the likes of Lewis O’Brien have been linked with moves to Elland Road in 2025 in what could quickly become the first task on the list of those now in charge of recruitment in Yorkshire. The midfielder is currently on loan from Nottingham Forest at American outfit LAFC where he has discovered his best form to earn the attention of English football once again.

Another midfielder would certainly be a wise addition, but it remains to be seen whether Leeds’ reshuffle will enjoy such success on the recruitment front without Steinsson or Miles.

'We host a Super Bowl every day' – With MLS and NWSL clubs, international friendlies and plans to host 2025 FIFA Club World Cup matches, Orlando becomes a soccer city

The U.S. will be at the center of the soccer world over next several years, with Orlando to play a big part in making it all work

Just last week, more than 100,000 fans descended upon New Orleans for this year's Super Bowl. New Orleans is a tourist town, so it knows how to host such events. Even so, there's nothing quite like a Super Bowl, right? The parties, the dining, the hotel stays, the economic opportunity – it all goes boom when an event like the Super Bowl comes to town.

Hosting such mass gatherings isn't easy. It requires infrastructure, investment and coordination from figureheads in various industries. The way Jason Siegel sees it, though, there's no city in the world better prepared to host those types of events than Orlando. After all, they seem to be doing it virtually every day.

"If you take the attendance at just the theme parks on any given day, we're hosting a Super Bowl every day of the year," he tells GOAL, referencing all of the attractions that bring millions in each year to Orlando and the surrounding communities.

Siegel is the President and CEO of the Greater Orlando Sports Commission, the organization tasked with bringing big events to the city of Orlando. His focus, especially, is on sports. And of late, that's really been soccer.

Over the last decade, Orlando looked to establish itself as a soccer city and, just as importantly, a worldwide destination for the sport. It starts with the local clubs, Orlando City in MLS and Orlando Pride in the NWSL, but that's just the base of it all. In 2024, Orlando hosted the U.S. men's national team multiple times. It hosted matches during the Copa America. Manchester City and Barcelona faced off in a friendly in the city, as did Club America and Atletico Nacional.

In fact, over the last several years, the city has hosted dozens of men's and women's soccer events, and that isn't stopping any time soon. It's all part of the plan to turn Orlando into a premier soccer destination, one that can be counted on to host games at the highest level each and every time.

ImagnA history of hosting

"Hospitality means something to all of us here," Siegel says. "It's in our DNA."

The stats back up those claims. There are few cities that host quite like Orlando, and fewer can do so every day like the city does. The city attracts 74 million visitors a year, which averages out to more than 200,000 a day, twice what New Orleans just had at the most recent Super Bowl. In the summer, during peak season, with all of the people physically in the city, Orlando would jump from the country's 15th largest market to the 11th on any given day.

It's not just theme parks, Siegel is quick to point out. Yes, DisneyWorld and Universal play a part, but the work he and his team have done to broaden Orlando's sporting horizons has also driven that tourism. WrestleMania, NCAA Championships, the Pro Bowl, March Madness, Olympic trials, Rugby World Cup, soccer – Siegel admits it feels like it's never ending. Even before the latest event ends, he and his team are back at work planning the next one.

"We serve the residents of this community," Siegel says. "Part of the equation is that we want the residents who live here to have incredible options of different events. Some are inexpensive to attend. Others have a different price point. Either way, regardless of time of year, we want to have lots of options for residents. We all have aggressive, unified personalities. We're hungry, and we've been building these relationships for a long time. We're aware of how sophisticated and competitive the landscape is and we just want to keep delivering."

One of the areas of emphasis is soccer. Orlando officials see the growth of the sport, and the city is determined to be at the forefront of it all.

AdvertisementIMGANGrowing a soccer city

For many, the sight of seeing the Orlando Pride hoist both major NWSL trophies in 2024 will have felt like a coronation. Just about a decade after both the men's and women's teams arrived at the top level of American soccer, Orlando had a champion. So much had been invested to get to this point. So many had worked hard to make it all happen.

Given the playoff runs by both the men's and women's teams in the city, 2024 marked the year Orlando truly arrived as a soccer city. That's now how it's felt from those who have been there, though. This has been a steady process, one built on the backs of the Wilfs, Kaka, Marta, Nani, Barbra Banda and anyone else who has done something to make that purple pop on the field.

"We're a soccer city, and I think that that is truly in our DNA," says Caesar Lopez, the COO of Orlando City, the Orlando Pride and the club's home, Inter&Co Stadium. "It shows in the type of players that are wanting to be here. It's less recruiting now and more trying to figure out who's the right fit. That's a good thing for us. We're still growing the game nationwide and soccer being successful is a microcosm of everything else that's happening across the nation. It's great, but, to me, Orlando is made to be a soccer city."

That, of course, includes the clubs, who established the groundwork for that culture, but a successful pro scene doesn't do it on its own. Given the growth of the game in America, and the infatuation with both European and South American soccer that has helped spurred that growth, it's been vital to welcome in outsiders, too, as only Orlando does.

To start, Orlando has made it a point to be a key base for both the U.S. men's and women's national teams. The men have played in the city every year since 2019, aside from the pandemic-hit 2020. The USWNT, meanwhile, has been in town four times since 2018. U.S. Soccer often uses Orlando as a base prior to playing road games in the Caribbean due to both the proximity to those games and the facilities available in the city and surrounding area.

Orlando, though, is defined by international flavor. Millions travel to the city from countries all over the world. Over the last several years, Arsenal, Chelsea, Juventus, Real Madrid, Manchester City and Barcelona have come over from Europe. On the women's side, England and Colombia have been brought in as USWNT opponents, while the men hosted Brazil just last year ahead of the Copa America.

In Siegel's eyes, being a "soccer city" isn't about succeeding in just one facet of the game, but proving you can be a destination for all of them.

"Whether it is at the grassroots level of the pro level, there's an unwavering, constant conversation about elevating everything," he says. "Listen, if it's good for soccer, it's certainly good for the two franchises, too."

Getty ImagesCollaboration is key

If there's one thing we can take away from last summer's Copa America, it's that this hosting stuff isn't easy. It requires and incredible amount of collaboration and communication from a city's worth of stakeholders. Security, ticketing, transportation, hotels, dining, entertainment – all have to be aligned. If not – well, you get what happened in Miami at the Copa America final.

Siegel says that Orlando's biggest strength, more than anything else that the are has going for it, is collaboration. Everyone, from all circles of this, is generally pulling in the same direction. For everyone involved, the end goal is the same: bring big events to the city of Orlando.

"If someone calls us and says they have an opportunity and can use our help, we can all collaborate and make this work together," he says. "That's the unique part of our city and out county and our region: we're willing to help and pull and push and pull to continue to elevate the experience for anybody who is coming into our market."

Orlando, obviously, has the infrastructure. There are more than 200,000 hotel rooms, timeshares or rental properties available in the region, so housing guests will never be an issue. The city has seven of the world's top 10 most popular theme parks, which gives guests plenty to do should they extend their stay. Beaches, shopping, other sporting events – the entertainment options are endless.

"The experience you have from the minute you step off the airplane until you see the bellhop at the hotel or resort, to the second that you're greeted at a theme park or an attraction or the minute you walk into one of our stadiums, it's a different vibe here," Siegel says. "We always are talking about positive outcomes and unbelievably real experiences with the way that a vacation destination makes you feel, it has to be the same when it comes to sports. We want to make sure that we're modeled so that, no matter where you go around this town, that it feels like that."

From a soccer perspective, Siegel is quick to point to the amount of base camps available for any team that does visit. Orlando City alone has the club's stadium as well as two training facilities. ESPN's Wide World of Sports is there, too. There are dozens of potential host venues across the local counties that are built to house teams.

There are options aplenty for teams looking to stay in the area, and those locations will have plenty of potential teams to host over the next few years.

Looking ahead

For Siegel and the rest of his team, all eyes are on the 2025 Club World Cup. Orlando is the only one of the 11 host cities to have games played at two separate venues, with both Camping World Stadium and Inter&Co Stadium hosting matches this summer. Both will host two group stage games, including matches featuring, headlined by a clash between Juventus and Manchester City on July 26, while the larger Camping World Stadium will then go on to host a Round of 16 match and a quarterfinal.

There will be no World Cup game coming in 2026, but Orlando could still play a part in that summer's tournament. Orlando has been named as one of the Team Base Camps designated by FIFA, which means one of the world's top national teams could spend a large chunk of next summer preparing for the tournament in the city.

"Orlando has always been this melting pot, I think, of so many different communities with this passion for the game," said Lopiez. "It's a global game. What I get really excited about is seeing different types of events coming, day in and day out, year in and year out. We're able to fill this venue and really drive passion and excitement. It's nothing without the collaboration and community that we have to bring those types of events together."

Added Siegel: "I think one of the things that we hope resonates is that we are able to do big things."

Big things are coming to American soccer. There will be more opportunities for massive events in the years to come. The 2026 World Cup isn't the end, but just the beginning and, as those big moments come to the U.S., Orlando hopes to be at the center of more as they look to build out their own soccer community.

Worth more than Szmodics: Ipswich star has seen value rise 260% since exit

Over the years, Ipswich Town have had some big names play for the club. Before Kieran McKenna took the Tractor Boys from League One to the Premier League in consecutive seasons, some current-day Premier League stars wore that famous blue shirt during their time in the football league.

The likes of Trevoh Chalobah spent a season on loan at Portman Road from boyhood club Chelsea, and Tyrone Mings, now part of Unai Emery’s successful Aston Villa side, played 63 times for the club before a move to Bournemouth. The likes of Chris Wood and Ainsley Maitland-Niles have also played for Ipswich.

Another of their former players, who has since gone on to play European football, turned out to be a genius piece of business from the club. That player is Adam Webster.

Adam Webster’s record at Ipswich

Brighton and Hove Albion centre-back Webster spent two seasons at Portman Road when they were in the Championship between 2016 and 2018. He was part of a side that managed to avoid relegation, finishing mid-table in both of his seasons at the club.

The Tractor Boys signed the centre-back in June 2016 from Portsmouth, the club where he first broke through. He cost the East Anglian outfit around £750k, according to BBC Sport, which, at the time was a record fee for Mick McCarthy as Ipswich boss.

The centre-back went on to make 53 appearances for the club over the two seasons, managing to get himself on the scoresheet once, against Birmingham City, and grab three assists along the way.

Frustratingly for the defender, injuries hampered his time at Portman Road. In his first season, he missed 259 days, and 44 games, with five separate cases of injury, before missing a further 94 games and 17 games with three different injury issues in his second campaign.

Eventually, the defender departed the club in 2018, joining Championship rivals Bristol City. His move to Ashton Gate cost £3.5m, although there were reports of clauses in the move increasing that to £8m.

Webster’s value in 2024

Nowadays, the defender is worth even more, as he continues to ply his trade on the South Coast at Brighton. He has become a key player at the Amex Stadium and was even praised by Jamie Carragher in 2022 for being “better than any other English central defender” at playing out from the back with both feet.

The Seagulls paid £20m to sign the defender in 2019, and he became their record signing at the time. He now ranks 10th on that list, alongside some superb players who have been signed by Brighton’s effective recruitment strategy.

Stats from Transfermarkt

He has since gone on to make 142 appearances for the South Coast outfit, although he has sadly been hampered by injuries at the Amex, too. He has so far managed to amass eight goals, including the first of a 2-1 win away to Arsenal, and three assists.

Despite his injury problems, the defender has certainly put in some key contributions, skippering the side on six occasions, and even featuring in the Europa League, a five-minute cameo at home to Ajax.

Nowadays, the defender, who was described as “immaculate” in possession by former Portsmouth teammate Tom Craddock, has seen his value drop slightly. According to Transfermarkt, he is now worth £12.6m, although that still represents a 260% increase from the £3.5m upfront fee that the Tractor Boys received for him back in 2019.

That is also worth more than summer signing Sammie Szmodics, who cost £9m up front. The Ireland international is valued at around £8.4m according to Transfermarkt, following a superb 2023/24 campaign for Blackburn Rovers in which he scored 27 Championship goals.

The 29-year-old has also caught the eye early into his time at Ipswich, after netting in the defeat away to Manchester City, with the club having certainly progressed since the days in which Webster was plying his trade under the likes of McCarthy.

Market Movers

Football FanCast's Market Movers series explores the changing landscape of the modern transfer market. How much is your club's star player or biggest flop worth today?

There is certainly a strong argument to be made that Ipswich made a mistake selling Webster. Hindsight is a wonderful thing, and knowing the player he has become, the Tractor Boys may well wish he was in McKenna’s squad today, alongside Szmodics and co.

Ipswich must regret not signing £16m PL star who's better than Hutchinson

The exciting star would have been incredible under McKenna.
