Sachin Tendulkar recalls seeing MS Dhoni for the first time: 'He was someone special'

Sachin Tendulkar knew even before MS Dhoni’s international debut that he was “something special to see.” Dhoni made his international debut in Bangladesh in 2004, under Sourav Ganguly’s captaincy, and in just his fifth ODI, he smashed 148 against Pakistan after being promoted to No. 3.”I hadn’t heard about him (Dhoni) until he got into the Indian team,” Tendulkar told the (whip) in his hand which he uses while hitting the ball.’ It was something special to see. It was his first outing with the Indian team. But the way he was hitting the ball, one could make out he was someone special.”ALSO READ: What that Insta post revealed: MS Dhoni caredGiving a peek into Dhoni’s personality, Tendulkar said he found him quiet in his early days as an international cricketer. “He has been quiet with me all throughout,” Tendulkar said. “I had heard many stories that he will not come and say ‘hello’. Many found him rude, but we broke that barrier. His behaviour was understandable. It happens when a player is new in the team, and takes some time to open up.”Dhoni, who went on to captain Tendulkar for six years, revealed during a book launch in 2013 how even after many years of playing together, he found it difficult to chat with Tendulkar outside the ground.”Even now, am a bit shy to talking to Sachin outside the field; inside the field it’s still good. On the Bangladesh tour [in 2004] we didn’t interact much, but in the Pakistan series, in the Kochi ODI, Sachin got five wickets. Whenever he was supposed to bowl, he’d ask me ‘shall I bowl legspin or offspin? Shall I bowl seam-ups or mix them up?'”That interaction made me comfortable. From there on, it was important for me to be ready with an answer whenever he asked me something. I had to at times tell him, ‘no, legspin will work better’. By the time I was made captain in 2007, I was easily comfortable with him when it came to talking to him on the field. Off the field, I still find it difficult.”Tendulkar picked out Dhoni’s calmness as one standout quality, while also being unable to pick out one particular Dhoni knock as his most favourite. Tendulkar resonated views of many of their former team-mates when he said “MS gave hope and showed nothing is impossible.”The one quality I liked about him was his calmness. It’s something that helped him be so successful,” Tendulkar said. “It has been a fantastic journey, he had come from a small place (Ranchi) and played 15 years for India. I wish him all the best after a fantastic career. I enjoyed all his innings, and to single out one innings will be hard for me.”Whatever is going on in his mind and what he thinks about his body, only he knows. He knows it better than anybody else. I would much rather look at his contribution to Indian cricket, it has been immense. He has given joy to so many people around the globe and inspired so many youngsters to play this sport. I would like to congratulate him on a fantastic career. I enjoyed playing with him.”‘You’ll always be my captain’ – Virat KohliVirat Kohli, the current India captain, who made his Test and ODI debuts under Dhoni’s captaincy, said he’ll always be “grateful” to Dhoni for backing him.”Words fall short a lot of times in life and this is one of those moments,” Kohli said in a video posted by the BCCI on Twitter. “All I can say, is to me, you’ll always be the guy who sat in the last seat of the bus; not saying much, but you’re presence and aura saying a lot. And for me, you’ve always been that guy and I’m sure you’ll continue to be so. “We shared a great camaraderie, friendship, understanding and that has happened because we’ve always played for the same goal, same reason, which is to make the team win and it has been a pleasure playing alongside you and playing under you initially in my career. You’ve shown faith and belief in me, which I’ll always be grateful for and I wish you the best in your next phase of your life – lot peace and lot of happiness. And I’ve always said this and I’ll say it again: you’ll always be my captain.”‘He hit balls into parts of the field that others couldn’t’ – Greg ChappellGreg Chappell, India’s head coach from 2005 to 2007, said Dhoni’s brute force and unorthodox approach stood out when he saw the wicketkeeper-batsman for the first time.”When I first met Dhoni in 2005, I was taken by his strength and the fact that he hit balls into parts of the field that others couldn’t,” Chappell told . “Short balls that most pulled through midwicket, MS hit straight back past startled bowlers. His back-foot, short-armed punches down the ground were also a signature shot but what impressed me most of all was his ability to clear boundaries at will.”Chappell felt Dhoni’s street smarts, his ability to understand situations and tailor his game from a brute hitter to a tactical finisher quickly made him India’s go-to player in ODIs.”I saw more potential than a brute in the dying overs,” Chappell said. “I could see that his decision-making and his reading of a game could make him one of the most dangerous finishers in the game. As Rahul Dravid and I began to reshape the way India played one-day cricket, we could see that Dhoni was going to be a key component in becoming one of the most dangerous teams either setting or chasing a target.”

Kai Havertz’s incredible form could spell the end for Arsenal’s £68m ace

The Premier League title might still be out of their hands, but Arsenal put in a performance to be proud of on Sunday afternoon as they ran out 3-2 winners away to Tottenham Hotspur.

Mikel Arteta's men, seemingly intent on giving their fans heart attacks, came dangerously close to letting their three-goal lead slip in the second half, but a steely backs-to-the-wall performance saw them through. While things looked a little ropey in the end, their team deserves all the praise they are getting, especially Kai Havertz.

The German, once mocked by rival fans, is now one of the Gunners' most dangerous stars, and he showed that again on Sunday, putting in a performance that could spell trouble for another Arsenal ace.

Kai Havertz's performance vs Tottenham Hotspur

The yardstick often used to gauge how successful big-money signings are is how they perform in the biggest games, and after a week in which Havertz scored two goals against Chelsea and scored and assisted against Tottenham, it would be hard to describe his summer move as anything other than a success.

There is no more sure way of winning over the fans than putting in big performances against rivals, and it feels as if the former Bayer Leverkusen star has now firmly established himself as a fan favourite among the Arsenal faithful.

His display on Sunday impressed more than just his travelling support, though, as the Standard's Simon Collings gave the 24-year-old a 9/10 on the day, writing that he put in 'one of his best performances in an Arsenal shirt', an opinion that's hard to disagree with.

That said, if anyone needed any more convincing, they'd just have to take a look at the striker's numbers from the game. In his 96 minutes of action, the Aachen-born ace scored one goal, provided one assist, took 46 touches, made two key passes, created one big chance, eight out of ten aerial duels, won two fouls and made one tackle.

In all, it was a genuinely impressive showing from a player who had, up until this week, split opinion, and while he's likely cemented his place in the starting lineup for the season's remaining games, his brilliant form might just have signalled the beginning of the end for one of his teammates.

Havertz's excellent form is bad news for Gabriel Jesus

Yes, while Leandro Trossard was comfortably Arsenal's worst attacker on the day – picking up a 4/10 from Football FanCast for his efforts – the player who could be at risk of losing his spot in the team thanks to Havertz's form is Gabriel Jesus.

Now, the former Manchester City ace is an incredibly talented player and one who should be playing for a Champions League side – his record of 32 goals in 46 games in the competition is evidence enough of that – but his time as an Arsenal player may well be coming to a close, at least if the Gunners bring in another quality number nine in the summer, that is.

The North Londoners have been linked to a plethora of frontmen already this year, such as Ivan Toney, Viktor Gyokeres, Joshua Zirkzee, and Victor Osimhen. If they do bring any of them through the door in the summer, it seems incredibly unlikely that they would also keep both Jesus and Havertz.

So, with that in mind, how do the pair stack up with one another? Well, when it comes to pure output, it's the recent arrival who comes out ahead, with 13 goals and six assists in 48 appearances – 32 of which were in midfield – to the Brazilian's eight goals and seven assists in 33 appearances.

What about their underlying numbers, then? Does the São Paulo-born ace come out on top there? Unfortunately for the 27-year-old, while he comes out better in certain metrics such as non-penalty expected goals and assists, progressive carries and assists all per 90, he is once again second-best overall, per FBref.

For example, while the "magnificent" German, as described by talent scout Jacek Kulig, registers a lower non-penalty expected goal and assists figure, he scores more often, produces more progressive passes, has a far better goal-to-shots-on-target ratio, maintains a better passing accuracy, produces more goal-creating actions, recovers more balls and wins far more aerial duels, all per 90.

Ultimately, while Jesus is an undeniably gifted forward, if Arsenal can get anywhere near his €80m – £68m – valuation from the CIES Football Observatory this summer, they should consider selling him as if another striker is signed, it seems unlikely that he would be able to displace them and Havertz as well.

Arteta could instantly drop Arsenal ace who won just 1/10 duels v Spurs

It wasn’t the best day at the office for the experienced international.

Brendon McCullum sees opportunity for New Zealand in post-Covid-19 BBL

Brendon McCullum has called for greater New Zealand involvement in the Big Bash League later this year if the availability of overseas players – and international cricket overall – remains restricted by the Covid-19 pandemic. There are positive signs that the Australian season could take shape somewhat as scheduled – there even remains hope that the men’s T20 World Cup could be played in October – with every effort being made to enable to the lucrative series against India to survive. Cricket Australia has started conversations with the federal government about what protocols would need to be in place to allow international teams to visit later in the year. While there remain plenty of hurdles to cross before full-fledged international sport can take place, there has already been progress in links between Australia and New Zealand resuming with the Warriors rugby team arriving in Tamworth, New South Wales at the weekend to prepare for the resumption of the NRL later this month and there are talks at the government level about a travel “bubble” between the two countries.”If there is a shortage of international cricket what an opportunity for the Big Bash, which if we are being honest has probably just tailed off a little bit of late, what a great opportunity to really morph that back into Australia sporting fans’ eyes,” McCullum, who had eight seasons with the Brisbane Heat, told . “And I think what a great opportunity to maybe bring a New Zealand team into the Big Bash or use New Zealand players as local players because there may be a distinct lack of overseas players.”A little bit of creative thinking. It may be just for one season but we have to prepare for the long-term if you are going to grow the game there may be some value.”However, if New Zealand’s international players are not playing in December and January – they are due to have a visit by Pakistan – NZC would likely see it as a chance to have them available for the T20 Super Smash, which usually runs concurrently with the first part of the Big Bash from mid-December.One of the contingency plans in place should next season be disrupted is the potential for Australia and New Zealand to play each other if movement between those two countries is more feasible than broader international travel. There are two ODIs left to play from the curtailed series in March plus three T20Is that were due to be hosted in New Zealand. The Big Bash will mark its tenth anniversary in the 2020-21 season and, before the pandemic, had commissioned a review by David Barham, the television executive who was central to the BBL’s rise while at Channel 10, into what could be done to revitalise the competition. The most intriguing suggestion out of the review was the prospect of four-innings T20 matches in an attempt to ensure contests are alive for longer.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The Reds' rivals, Man Utd, have long been keen on the former Juventus midfielder, and after his contract expired this summer he is now without a club and is available to sign. He joined Juventus in 2019 and has been a reliable figure in their midfield. He could add much needed cover to Liverpool's squad with that area in particular looking thin after Thiago's retirement.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Rabiot has only ever moved on free transfers, joining Juventus from PSG in 2019. Since arriving in Italy he proved himself as a creative and goalscoring midfielder, netting 13 times in the last two league campaigns.

  • WHAT NEXT FOR RABIOT AND LIVERPOOL?

Liverpool's new style of play is expected to be more possession-oriented, which is different to what Jurgen Klopp expected from his players. Rabiot would help deliver that new philosophy and could push the likes of Curtis Jones and Alexis Mac Allister to new levels.

USMNT U23 player ratings vs New Zealand: Americans respond in must-win Olympic match, rout New Zealand 4-1

The U.S. displayed a winning mentality early and often, scoring four to get Olympic Games back on track

The USA waited 5,827 days between their last Olympic goal in 2008 and their first in 2024. An effort 16-years in the making, the weight on this team's shoulders was lifted just seven minutes into their 4-1 thumping of New Zealand Saturday in the group stage of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

The four goals is the most the US men have ever scored in an Olympic match, and the 3-goal margin of victory tied the highest in team history at the Games. And it all began quickly.

After Nathaniel Harriel was taken down in the box, the U.S. U23 squad earned a penalty kick and Djordje Mihailovic confidently stepped up and slotted home. Not five minutes later, the lead was doubled through defender Walker Zimmerman.

The squad's veteran, Zimmerman forced the ball into the back of the net after some pinball in the box. At 31 years, 70 days, Zimmerman is the oldest U.S. Olympic men’s soccer player to score at the Games since the team’s first participation in 1924.

And then, 30 minutes into the match, the U.S. added a third through midfielder Gianluca Busio. The Venezia star, though, was removed from the match five minutes later after suffering a non-contact injury.

After a double-change early in the second half, the U.S. added a fourth through Paxten Aaronson, who was fed by a recently-introduced Griffin Yow in the 58th minute.

New Zealand did earn a late consolation effort, finding the back of the net in the 77th minute through Jesse Randall, but it was too little, too late.

In Marseille, U.S. coach Marko Mitrovic fielded the same starting XI as in the terrible performance on matchday one, a 3-0 loss to France. The U.S. rebounded brilliantly, making up their negative goal-differential and staking the pole position to advance with a result against Guinea on matchday three on Tuesday.

GOAL rates the U23 USMNT players from Marseille.

Getty ImagesGoalkeeper & Defense

Patrick Schulte (7/10):

Made an incredible save in the first half, and was otherwise sound when called upon.

John Tolkin (7/10):

A much more composed performance than against France. Was lively on both ends of the pitch.

Walker Zimmerman (9/10):

Incredible going forward, was vocal on the pitch, hammered home his effort and looked like the leader the USMNT needed in a must-win match.

Miles Robinson (6/10):

Didn't stand out, but played his role well on the back line.

Nathaniel Harriel (8/10):

Incredible going forward. Played a role in two goals in the final-third, and locked down his flank defensively.

Tanner Tessman (7/10):

Really solid performance, but picked up a silly yellow before the halftime whistle. Ran the midfield show.

Gianluca Busio (8/10):

Took his goal well when the opportunity arrived, but was removed 36 minutes into the match after a non-contact injury.

Djordje Mihailovic (7/10):

Was composed in the final-third on and off the ball. Took his penalty brilliantly, too.

Paxten Aaronson (8/10):

Once again the most lively of the front-three for the USMNT, scoring a brilliant solo effort in the second half.

Duncan McGuire (5/10):

Still has yet to find his role in this team, as the sole striker on the roster. Little service from the flanks, but he's not found a way to make himself known in the attack yet. Removed after 54 minutes.

Kevin Paredes (7/10):

Wasn't the most useful of the attackers, but played his role well, earning an assist in the first half.

Getty ImagesSubs & Manager

Benja Cremaschi (6/10):

Subbed on late, and was lively, but did not stand out. He is the roster’s youngest player at 19 years, 148 days.

Taylor Booth (6/10):

Second-half sub, was electric on the wing, but nothing came of it.

Maxi Dietz (5/10):

Brought on for McGuire, the defender made an error on the lone New Zealand goal.

Griffin Yow (8/10):

Subbed on to the pitch and made an impact with an assist for Aaronson. You cannot ask for a better cameo.

Jack McGlynn (7/10):

Replaced Busio early in the first half and executed his role brillianty. It was a like-for-like switch.

Marko Mitrovic (7/10):

Mitrovic got nearly everything right. Losing Busio could be a blow, and not getting McGuire into the match may hurt this team in the long run, but nearly everything was perfect. A brilliant result when one was absolutely needed.

Arsenal have a "monster" teen talent who’s gunning to replace Jesus

It has been a breathless Premier League season so far this year, and as the competition takes a short break for the international fixtures, Arsenal find themselves atop the table again.

Mikel Arteta's side endured a rough patch of form around the festive period but have since fought back and are the most in-form side in the country, winning their last eight league games by an aggregate score of 33-4.

This incredible run is even more impressive, considering the Gunners have been without their first-choice striker, Gabriel Jesus, for much of it due to recurring injuries.

The Brazilian's return will only make the north Londoners stronger for the rest of the campaign, but Hale End could be set to provide the club with his potential replacement in the coming years.

Gabriel Jesus' Arsenal career in numbers

Jesus signed for the Gunners in July 2022 for a fee of around £45m, and while there have been plenty of impressive performances in the year and a half since, it's hard to be sure where the 26-year-old's future lies.

In his first season with the club, the Sao Paulo-born dynamo scored 11 goals and provided eight assists in just 33 games, meaning he averaged a goal involvement every 1.7 games, which is an undeniably brilliant return for a striker playing for one of the 'big six.'

However, the biggest problem for the former City ace is his injury record. Throughout the 2022/23 campaign, he missed 17 games due to a knee injury he sustained at the 2022 World Cup.

This season, the 5 foot 9 striker has scored eight goals and provided five assists in 26 outings for the Gunners, but he has already missed 16 matches through a hamstring injury and three flareups of the same knee problem that saw him miss a significant chunk of last year's action.

Jesus has made a few appearances off the bench recently and looks likely to play a consequential role in Arsenal's run-in. However, with a growing reputation for missing games, he could eventually see his place taken by an academy prospect who's currently making waves at Hale End.

Why fans should be excited about Chidozie Obi-Martin

The academy ace in question is Danish forward Chidozie Obi-Martin, who joined the Gunners' youth setup when he was 14 after his family moved to England.

Despite being just 16 years old, Obi-Martin has already made the forward position in the U18s side his own, scoring eight goals and providing two assists in just 11 appearances this season.

This form has led to respected data analyst Ben Mattinson describing the youngster as a "monster on the pitch" and someone with "the tools to be a star", which is hard to argue with considering he scored a remarkable ten goals in a single game against Liverpool's U16s last year.

The tremendously exciting prospect hasn't just been impressive in London, though. His record for Denmark's junior sides is equally brilliant.

In six appearances for the U16s, the "really quick" forward, as described by Arsenal legend Ian Wright, scored three goals, and in 11 games for the U17s, he has scored nine, meaning he's averaging a goal every 1.41 games for the Danish youth teams.

Ultimately, it will likely be some time until Obi-Martin regularly appears for the first team.

Philippe Coutinho set for fairytale return to Vasco da Gama but must wait for Aston Villa release

Coutinho is only waiting for the formality of his Aston Villa contract being terminated in order to become a Vasco da Gama player again for the first time in 16 years. has reported an agreement with Vasco has been reached after Coutinho's representatives began talks two weeks ago. They wanted to get to that stage before requesting that Villa end his contract. Botafogo, Fluminense and Gremio were also interested.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Mutually ending Coutinho's deal two years early is not expected to be a problem. He spent the 2023-24 season on loan with Al-Duhail in Qatar, having not particularly impressed during his sole full campaign at Villa Park and not part of Unai Emery's plans. A much reduced contract is seen as a small price to pay as Coutinho will be heading home to Rio De Janeiro, having left Vasco as a 16-year-old to move to Europe with Inter Milan.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Vasco da Gama will help Coutinho develop his charitable foundation as he seeks to give back to the community. The club appears to have also accepted his request to recruit Souza and Alex Teixeira, both of whom grew up with Coutinho in the Vasco youth ranks. Souza's contract with Istanbul Basaksehir has been terminated to facilitate the move, while Teixeira, once a major target for Liverpool during Coutinho's time there, has been without a club since beng released by Vasco in December.

    WHAT NEXT FOR COUTINHO?

After spending half of his life in Europe, this move could be the reset that Coutinho needs. He only recently turned 32 and still has plenty of football left to play should he so wish. His arrival should also be a boost to Vasco da Gama, who are struggling just above the relegation zone 12 games into the 2024 Brasileirao season.

Chelsea must regret selling £1m ace who's now outperforming Palmer

The last month or so has been an emotional rollercoaster for Chelsea fans, as they watched their team dismantle Aston Villa in the FA Cup on Wednesday evening after watching them get battered in the two Premier League games prior.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side have been incredibly inconsistent so far this season, and while their defence certainly needs a lot of work, their inability to put away chances is more of a pressing issue.

As things stand, only summer signing Cole Palmer has reached double figures for the Blues across all competitions this year, which is a pretty woeful state of affairs for one of the biggest teams in the country.

However, the fact that a player they sold for just £1m a couple of years ago has been having an even better season than the former Manchester City gem typifies the problems at the club.

Chelsea's sale of Giroud

The player in question is none other than France’s all-time top goalscorer and World Cup winner, Olivier Giroud.

The Blues signed the lethal frontman from cross-city rivals Arsenal in January 2018 for the relatively modest fee – at least by today’s standards – of around £18m, after his game time in N5 had been seriously reduced with the arrival of Alexandre Lacazette the summer prior.

During his stint in west London, Giroud made 119 appearances for the Pensioners, scoring 39 goals and providing 14 assists, meaning he was averaging 0.44 goal involvements per match – a respectable return for the price tag.

While he was never the most popular or most impressive player at the club, his time with Chelsea did coincide with their second Champions League triumph, and though he didn’t play in the final, his six goals on the way there certainly meant he played his part.

Olivier Giroud

However, shortly in that same summer, it was announced that he had been sold to AC Milan for the paltry fee of £1m, and while it was probably seen as reasonable at the time given his age, his performances since suggest there should have been at least a zero after that one.

Giroud's Milan record

The former Arsenal man wasted no time settling in when he arrived at the San Siro and enjoyed a tremendous first season in Italy, where he played a crucial role in the Rossoneri winning their first Scudetto for 11 years.

The Italian giants needed a point from their final-day game against Sassuolo after Inter Milan won theirs, and the Frenchman scored a brace to help them collect all three.

In all, the “top-level” forward, as former manager Arsène Wenger described him, has scored 44 goals and provided 20 assists for Milan in the 112 games he’s played for them, meaning that he averages a goal involvement once every 1.75 games, a frankly remarkable statistic for a 37-year-old striker in one of Europe’s top five leagues.

What’s even more remarkable is that he isn’t slowing down and has been more productive than Chelsea’s best player this season, Palmer.

For example, the “exceptional” striker, as described by Gary Lineker, has scored 12 goals and provided nine assists in 27 appearances, meaning he’s averaging 0.77 goal involvements this season.

In contrast, Palmer’s 14 goals and seven assists in 30 appearances mean he is averaging slightly less, around 0.70 goal involvements per match.
