England have confirmed Emirates Old Trafford and the Ageas Bowl as the venues for fixtures against Ireland and Pakistan this summer. Ireland will visit later this month for three ODIs, while Pakistan have already arrived in the country ahead of Test and T20I series. The ECB has been working to salvage as much of its home international programme as possible after the Covid-19 shutdown, and said that discussions remained ongoing about the possibility of Australia touring, and a proposed women’s tri-series featuring England, India and South Africa.Ireland had been due to play their series, part of the World Cup Super League, in September but agreed to move the games forward, with all three ODIs to be held behind closed doors in Southampton from July 30 to August 4.The first Test against Pakistan will begin a day later in Manchester, with the teams then moving down to Southampton for the second and third matches at the Ageas Bowl, starting on August 13 and 21. They will return to Manchester for T20Is at Emirates Old Trafford on August 28, 30 and September 1.”Confirmation of these matches against Ireland and Pakistan is another important step for our game as we begin to safely stage international cricket again, but also to minimise the impact the Covid-19 pandemic has had, and will continue to have, on cricket at all levels,” ECB chief executive Tom Harrison said.”It has taken significant effort and expertise to allow us to reach a position where cricket is now ready and able to return to the field of play from the elite level to recreational cricket.”We owe a significant debt of gratitude to the players, staff and administrators of the Cricket West Indies, Cricket Ireland, and the Pakistan Cricket Board for their willingness and co-operation to get international cricket back up and running and allow these matches to be staged.”Sports fans across the world will benefit as international cricket returns to our screens while it will also provide much-needed financial aid at all levels of cricket in England and Wales as we aim to withstand the challenges in front of us.”It must be reiterated that there is still much work for the ECB and the cricket network to do as we try to plot a path through this pandemic. Chief amongst our priorities is to build on our commitment to support and grow women’s cricket and at the elite level discussions continue to progress to determine the best and safest way to host a tri-series against India and South Africa.”We also continue to explore options for our England men to play white-ball series against Australia this summer and hope to have news on those series soon.”The majority of Pakistan’s 29-man squad flew to the UK in late June, despite disruption caused by a number of positive Covid-19 tests. Ten players did not take the initial flight, but all but one have now returned the two negative tests required to participate in the tour.Like West Indies and Pakistan, Ireland’s players are expected to given an ‘opt out’ by the selectors in case any have concerns about Covid-19 in the UK.

Newcastle now among favourites to sign "exciting" new star in Gordon repeat

Hoping to make their return to the Premier League's top four next season to prove that the 2022/23 campaign was no blip, Newcastle United are now reportedly in pole position to land a key player in pursuit of their ambitions.

Newcastle transfer news

The Magpies have learned a harsh lesson in squad depth this season, with Eddie Howe's injury list often leaving him short on options as he attempts to navigate playing in four competitions. And that injury list is only set to continue into the next campaign, given that both Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles suffered ACL injuries that will rule them out of the start of next season.

Wow: Newcastle reportedly in pole position to snap up off-field addition

A “very important offer” has been made.

ByHenry Jackson May 1, 2024

The transfer window should help solve Newcastle's problem in the form of Tosin Adarabioyo, however. Reports suggest that those at St James' Park are set to sign the Fulham defender on a free deal this summer upon the expiry of his current deal at Craven Cottage.

Bournemouth's Lloyd Kelly could then follow suit in a similar deal as a free agent this summer. But that will still leave Newcastle with a midfield problem that will prove to be a more expensive fix if reports are to be believed.

According to Football Transfers, Newcastle are leading the way to sign Amadou Onana this summer alongside Arsenal and Bayern Munich in a deal that could be worth over £50m in the coming months. This wouldn't be the first time that Newcastle and Everton have done business around that price range, having previously agreed a deal that saw Anthony Gordon head to St James' Park in a deal worth £45m.

That deal has since paid dividends for the Magpies, who have seen Gordon discover his best form in the current campaign. Now, they could see the same happen with Onana if they push on and beat Bayern Munich and Arsenal to the midfielder's signature.

"Exciting" Onana can replace Longstaff

If Newcastle want to push on and return to the Champions League places next season then players of Onana's potential will quickly prove to be the key, especially in place of the likes of Sean Longstaff. What's more, the return of Sandro Tonali will also hand Howe a major boost and perhaps even give Onana the perfect partner if he completes a move this summer.

The Belgian has received high praise during his time in England too, including from former Everton and Belgium boss Roberto Martinez, who told Sky Sports "Really exciting footballer. I know that sometimes when we speak about players, it’s very difficult to measure their potential. I think we are talking about a 20-year-old boy, who is probably one of the most talented at that age in European football, and that’s how excited we are in Belgium.

“He’s got the physicality and the presence of a player that the Everton fans know very well in Marouane Fellaini. He can become anything in that central area, so I can understand the excitement around Everton – this is one of the most exciting prospects in European football at this present time.”

Ellyse Perry expects pace to be key at T20 World Cup

Australia’s fast bowlers rattled India in Canberra and it could be a feature of the coming weeks

Alex Malcolm06-Feb-2020Australia allrounder Ellyse Perry believes pace bowling could play a huge part in the T20 World Cup after she and Tayla Vlaeminck ripped through India’s middle order last weekend. The pair took 7 for 26 between them in eight overs at Manuka Oval, including five wickets in 10 balls, to help set up a four-wicket win.Vlaeminck touched speeds of 120kph and bounced out both Jemimah Rodrigues and Arundhati Reddy while Perry’s extra bounce forced three catches to be sliced behind square on the off side.ALSO READ: Meg Lanning uses stranger’s swimming pool to ease back conditionA large number of matches could be played on quicker pitches than some of the regular women’s international and WBBL venues including the WACA, Manuka Oval, the SCG, and MCG.”I think fast bowling in general, if you look at the trend across the WBBL earlier this season, it’s almost come back into vogue a little bit in a sense,” Perry said.”I think maybe the last couple of years, spin’s been a little bit more dominant from a bowling point of view but certainly later in the summer, the wickets are a little bit harder, they’ve probably had a bit more time so they’ve got a bit more carry and bounce, and if you look at Tayla Vlaeminck’s performance last weekend in Canberra, she’s got incredible x-factor on Australian wickets and that was really crucial for us in that second game against India. So I think across the board, fast bowling is going to play a big role in this world cup which is really exciting.”Perry bowled superbly in eight of the nine overs she delivered last weekend taking 1 for 9 against England and 4 for 13 against India but did suffer some punishment at the hands of England’s Heather Knight in the Super Over on Saturday where she conceded 10 in four balls defending just eight.Ellyse Perry poses in front of a T20 World Cup mural featuring her in Melbourne•Getty Images

Perry said Australia’s loss in the opening game was the perfect preparation for what is to come. “You certainly want to have those kinds of moments leading into a tournament rather than when you’re in them,” she said.”But a big part of that is just the habit of winning and making sure that, whatever circumstances you face, because every game is going to be different, every [set of] conditions are going to be different, oppositions are different, so it’s really about just having that knack of finding a way to win.”We’ve had some really good chats around that over the last couple of days, just making sure that we’re able to adapt quickly to whatever is thrown at us and also I think you’re always better for a few games. It’s nice to be back together. We haven’t played together for quite a while. So, all in all, I think it’s brilliant preparation for us.”Australia face India and England again at the Junction Oval in Melbourne on Saturday and Sunday and two wins would guarantee a spot in Wednesday’s tri-series final.Australia skipper Meg Lanning is expected to return after missing the England Super Over and the India game in Canberra due to a back issue.Perry said the batting group has had some honest discussions this week after disappointing showings in the first two matches of the series.”I think it’s probably just a little bit around decision-making and also taking the game on at the right time and the right circumstances. I think we were maybe a little bit timid in some ways. It’s funny when you come back together with a group you haven’t played with for a while, just finding your place again and the roles that you’ve got to play in that order, and we’re really fortunate to have great depth in our batting line up and it was wonderful to see Annabel Sutherland do as well as she did.”But at the same time, I think you’ve still got to take ownership at the top and we probably didn’t do that well over the weekend. Certainly, at the Junction Oval, which is a wonderful place to bat, it’s a good opportunity for us all to do a little bit better this weekend.”

Farke must replace Summerville with Leeds’ "really clinical" star

Leeds United are back in action in the Championship this afternoon as they take on Millwall at Elland Road after Ipswich Town played on Saturday.

The Whites know that all three points will take them back into the automatic promotion places as they battle it out with Leicester City, the Tractor Boys, and Southampton to secure a place in the top two.

They are aiming to return to the Premier League at the first time of asking, following their relegation at the end of last season, and a win against Neil Harris' side today would be another step in the right direction.

Daniel Farke.

Daniel Farke's men come into this match off the back of a 2-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough in the second tier, having beaten Stoke City in their previous league outing.

Despite the win in their last game against the Owls, the German head coach must make at least one change to his XI as Crysencio Summerville should be brutally ditched from the team to be replaced by Dan James.

Crysencio Summerville's stats against Sheffield Wednesday

The 22-year-old wizard has not been at his sparkling best in recent weeks and that was clear in his disappointing display against Wednesday.

He lined up on the left flank as part of the attack alongside Georginio Rutter, Wilfried Gnonto, and Patrick Bamford but failed to make an impact in the final third.

In 83 minutes on the pitch, Summerville only created one chance for his teammates, which was not a 'big chance', and ended the game with 0.11 xA.

Crysencio Summerville.

His fellow attackers were, however, able to provide him with a terrific opportunity in front of goal. Gnonto played the ball through to the winger to send him one-on-one against James Beadle, and the former Feyenoord failed to finish as the young shot-stopper made the save.

This meant that Summerville, who also lost both of his aerial duels, came off the pitch with one key pass, one 'big chance' missed, and zero goals and assists to show for his efforts.

He has now gone six matches in all competitions without a single goal or assist on the left flank, which suggests that the well has dried up in front of goal for him.

In those six outings, Summerville had 13 shots at goal and missed two 'big chances'. The attacker was wasteful with the opportunities that came his way, and should now be brutally ditched from the XI.

It has been a sustained – with over around 436 minutes since his last goal contribution – dip in form and Farke must react by dropping the talented forward to the bench, in the hope that it will bring a reaction from him off the bench or in the future matches.

Leeds will want the Dutchman to be back at his best as they know that he can be an explosive and devastating force to Championship defences when he is in full flow.

Crysencio Summerville's Championship stats

The Whites star, in spite of his recent struggles at the top end of the pitch, has been one of the best forward players in the division as both a scorer and a creator of goals for his side.

Leeds duo Daniel Farke and Crysencio Summerville.

In fact, only three players – Adam Armstrong, Morgan Whittaker, and Sammie Szmodics – have scored more goals than the 22-year-old dynamo (15) in the Championship this term, which shows that he has been one of the biggest goalscoring threats in the league.

Summerville also ranks third in the division for Expected Assists (xA) with 9.73 but has only been rewarded with eight assists for his efforts, which suggests that his teammates have not taken advantage of the quality of chances he has been able to create for them throughout the season.

As you can see in the table above, the impressive magician has been an outstanding performer for the Whites in a host of key attacking metrics, which speak to his quality as both a scorer and a creator of goals.

However, that ability in the final third has not been on display in recent weeks, with his six-game drought, which is why James should be unleashed ahead of him against Millwall.

Dan James' Championship stats this season

The Wales international should replace Summerville in the starting XI as he also has the quality to score and create goals from a wide position, but has been in better form than his teammate of late.

James has produced one goal and one assist in his last five appearances for Leeds in all competitions, with the winning goal in the 1-0 win over Stoke and an assist in the 3-1 success over Leicester.

As you can see in the table above, the Welsh gem created four chances to go along with his winning goal, which was a well-struck but deflected effort into the corner.

The former Manchester United forward, who was hailed as "really clinical" by Farke earlier this season, has scored 11 goals from 8.90 xG in 24 Championship outings. This shows that he has been lethal in front of goal and made the most of the chances that have come his way, as he has outperformed his xG by around two.

James has also showcased his quality as a creator of goals for others. The £30k-per-week whiz has created 11 'big chances' and assisted his fellow attackers on seven occasions, which suggests that his teammates have let him down at times with wasteful finishing.

Dan James

These statistics show that the 26-year-old speedster is similar to Summerville in the sense that they both offer a duel threat in the final third, albeit the Dutchman has provided goals and assists more frequently over the course of the campaign.

Therefore, it would make sense to replace the 22-year-old – who is in poor form – with James for this afternoon's clash with Millwall at Elland Road, as he could do a similar job down the left flank to cause the away team constant problems with his running and quality on the ball.

Heather Knight sees England to 3-0 series win over Pakistan

Captain leads the way with bat as England continue T20 World Cup fine-tuning

ESPNcricinfo staff20-Dec-2019Pakistan pushed England close but could not prevent defeat and a 3-0 whitewash in the T20I series in Kuala Lumpur. Javeria Khan top-scored in the match with 57, but England kept a grip on the scoring rate to close out the game.England, who rested Nat Sciver and Katherine Brunt for the final game, produced an all-round effort with bat and ball. Captain Heather Knight made 43 from 31 balls and the rest of the top five all chipped in with solid contributions, before Anya Shrusbole, Sarah Glenn and Sophie Ecclestone shared five wickets to disrupt Pakistan’s chase. The tour also allowed England’s new head coach, Lisa Keightley, who is due to take up the role in January, to have a first look at the players after she joined up with the team following the conclusion of the Women’s Big Bash League.”I think it’s been a good tour for us,” Knight said. “We asked batters to get big runs and that’s happened across both the ODI and the IT20 series.”I think we’ve found some new players, as well. Sarah Glenn has really put her hand up and that’s great for us, it adds to the competition for places and makes us stronger as a group.”I’ve been proud of how we’ve maintained our high standards, especially in the field – which is something we’ve been working hard on.”It’s been great to spend time with Lisa and get chatting to her about how she sees the plans moving forward. We’re looking forward to the new year and the challenge of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in Australia.”After Danni Wyatt had lashed 25 off 15 to get England going, the main plank of the innings was provided by an 81-run partnership between Knight and Amy Jones. Knight hit three sixes in her innings, and while both fell in consecutive overs, Fran Wilson and Tammy Beaumont added another fifty stand in the closing overs.Pakistan lost both openers inside the Powerplay, and were struggling at just past the halfway way point when Bismah Maroof was stumped off Glenn to leave them 68 for 3. Javeria’s measured innings kept them in the hunt but despite Sidra Nawaz cracking 19 off 7 balls at the end, Pakistan had left themselves too much to do.

Jason Behrendorff out of Sussex's Blast quarter-final with back injury

Sussex will go into their T20 Blast quarter-final against Worcestershire on Friday night with only one overseas player, after Jason Behrendorff was recalled by Western Australia following a back injury.Behrendorff, who signed as a replacement overseas player due to Rashid Khan’s Afghanistan commitments, played only two games in the tournament, going wicketless against both Essex and Glamorgan. He was a more direct replacement for Tymal Mills, the left-arm seamer, who was ruled out of the tournament in August, also with a back injury.Behrendorff’s injury means that Sussex will go into Friday night’s game with Alex Carey as their only overseas player. It is unlikely that Carey would be available for Finals Day if Sussex were to make it. His state, South Australia, begin their 50-over season against Queensland three days later, and it is expected that they will recall him to train before that game.Rashid would also be missing due to a clash with Afghanistan’s T20I tri-series against Bangladesh and Zimbabwe, meaning that if Sussex were to win on Friday night, they could well be without an overseas player.Friday’s game sold out within 48 hours of going on sale, giving Sussex a seventh full house in eight Blast home games, and captain Luke Wright paid tribute to the club’s fans.”The atmosphere at Hove this year has been the best I can remember for many seasons,” Wright said. “Even in my 15th season playing T20 at the ground, the cheers of Sharks fans never fail to send a tingle down the spine when walking out to the middle.”

Manager wants Ten Hag’s job at Man Utd and is keen to work with Ratcliffe

Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United future has come in for questioning at points this season, and one rather infamous manager is already keen to replace him at Old Trafford.

Man Utd's form under Ten Hag

The Red Devils recorded their first Premier League win of 2024 on Thursday evening with a dramatic 4-3 win at Wolves. Kobbie Mainoo was the hero at Molineux in stoppage time, scoring a dramatic winner after United initially surrendered a two-goal lead.

Manchester United's Kobbie Mainoo.

However, things haven’t exactly gone to plan in all competitions throughout the campaign, losing early in the EFL Cup to Newcastle United and being knocked out of the Champions League at the group stage.

In the Premier League, the Red Devils are currently eight points adrift of a top four place with just 16 games remaining. There have been rumours that Sir Jim Ratcliffe was looking into replacing Ten Hag at Old Trafford with former Chelsea boss Graham Potter, with talks even held over a potential move, however, another former Blues manager is keen on the United job.

Jose Mourinho wants United return

According to The Daily Mail, Jose Mourinho is eyeing up a sensational return to Old Trafford to replace Ten Hag. It is believed that the former United boss, who recently left Roma, is keen to work with the new regime at United, meaning Ratcliffe and INEOS.

"His ambition is to return to United," a friend explained. "He feels like he has unfinished business there after how it ended last time and he had made it his mission to go back."

AS Roma manager Jose Mourinho.

Mourinho was in charge of the Red Devils between 2016-2018 and won the Europa League during his time at Old Trafford. Since then, the Portuguese manager has been in charge of both Tottenham and Roma, leaving the latter earlier this month.

The 61-year-old has also come in for praise throughout his career, with Owen Hargreaves saying after Roma won the Europa Conference League in 2022: “Mourinho is almost at his best when he is the underdog like you saw initially when he was at Porto. They are not going to blow people away, that is not his style of football but he gets the job done. Football is about winning and Mourinho wins.”

Joe Cole also said: “Roma have got an outstanding manager in Jose. I had a good half an hour with him and he was in great form before this game.”

Mourinho feels he has unfinished business with United by the looks of things, and although a return appears to be unlikely, it could be one to keep an eye on if Ten Hag fails to win the FA Cup or finish in the top four of the Premier League in what would be a season to forget after his first year in charge.

'Flexible batting at any number' – Shreyas Iyer braces for middle-order audition

The batsman is coming off a productive series for India A in the Caribbean, and will compete with KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant for the No. 4 slot

Aishwarya Kumar in Port-of-Spain10-Aug-2019Shreyas Iyer, and his India team-mates, are looking forward to a full match in Port-of-Spain after the first ODI in Guyana was washed out after only 13 overs, with more at stake than would appear following a World Cup semi-final appearance.Last month, rain had pushed India’s World Cup semi-final against New Zealand into a reserve day, and Iyer hoped the weather wouln’t wash away this series as well. It’s particularly valuable that he gets some time on the field in the remaining two ODIs on August 11 and August 14 as India continue their ongoing attempts to try to solve their No. 4 puzzle.India haven’t had a chance to discuss the spot so far with the first match rained out, but Iyer said the team would experiment and give several players a chance. That could mean KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant and Iyer himself, over the next two matches.”Personally, I am not thinking about batting only at No. 4,” Iyer said. “I want to be someone who is very flexible batting at any number or if you go into any situation you should be able to grab that opportunity and make the best use of it.”When asked about switching to ODIs from T20Is, Iyer said India have the momentum going into this series coming off a 3-0 sweep.”The way the team is playing currently, it’s totally amazing,” he said. “If one doesn’t perform, the next one raises his hand and he takes the responsibility to take the team through and this is what has been happening throughout the year.”Rain interrupted India’s Saturday training session in Port-of-Spain, forcing them to train indoors. But despite the lack of enough practice, Iyer drew confidence from his India A stint in the Caribbean, where he was the third-highest run-getter in the one-dayers with 187 runs in four innings.”It’s going to be another two opportunities for me to make the best use of it,” Iyer said. “Hopefully this also doesn’t rain off. We are hardly getting any net practice. I am eager to go out there and carry forward the momentum which I got from my India A matches. Looking forward to a good series finish.”
