Real Madrid star Vinicius lost out on the Ballon d'Or last month to Manchester City's Rodri in controversial circumstances, which led to the European champions pulling out of attendance for the prestigious award ceremony in Paris at the last minute altogether and hitting out at those who didn't vote for him. The Brazilian will now get his shot at revenge against the Spanish midfielder as the two headline the nominees list for The Best FIFA Men's Player award for 2024.

FIFA released the list of nominees just before midnight on Thursday with Vinicius joined by Real Madrid colleagues Bellingham, Kylian Mbappe, Federico Valverde and Dani Carvajal, as well as the retired Toni Kroos. Also on the list is Rodri's Manchester City team-mate Erling Haaland and Spanish compatriot Lamine Yamal. The other nominees are three-time The Best award winner and defending champion Messi, and Bayer Leverkusen superstar Florian Wirtz.

The Ballon d'Or voting system came under a lot of scrutiny with journalists playing the key role in determining the winner as Rodri won the prestigious award over Vinicius. However, the voting system for The Best FIFA Men's Player award will be equally weighted between votes from the fans, the current captains and coaches of all women’s and men’s national teams, and select media representatives.

Barcelona decision opens door for Spurs to move for £200,000-per-week star

Barcelona and president Joan Laporta have made a decision on pursuing one £200,000-per-week forward, which may actually benefit Tottenham as manager Ange Postecoglou looks to make more attacking additions after Timo Werner.

Spurs expected to make further forward signings after Werner

The Germany international penned an extension on his loan deal at Spurs, which now runs until the end of next season.

Werner came as Spurs' first signing of the summer window, and it was an astute deal, with chairman Daniel Levy re-negotiating the buy-option clause in his contract to just £8.5 million as well as keeping the winger for another full campaign.

The former Chelsea man's two goals and three assists in the Premier League told just half the story, as Werner's lightening fast pace and ability to crop up in dangerous positions was a real asset for Postecoglou – even if there are concerns surrounding his finishing ability at times.

However, despite keeping Werner for the entirety of 2024/2025, technical director Johan Lange and the wider recruitment team are still expected to provide Postecoglou with further attacking additions.

Tottenham want to sign a prolific striker to finally replace Harry Kane, according to various reports, and it is believed that another wide player could join Spurs before summer deadline day.

Wolves star Pedro Neto is back under consideration at Tottenham, but worries lie with the Portuguese's extensive injury record rather than his ability to contribute. There are alternatives to the 24-year-old, and the north Londoners have been heavily linked with a move for Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze recently.

Spurs-Eze-Postecoglou

The Englishman, who was rewarded for his 2023/2024 form with a place in Gareth Southgate's England squad for the Euros, will command a price tag of around £60 million – which is the full value of his release clause.

Any proven attacking midfielder is likely to come at a premium, and none more so than Spain star Nico Williams. The 21-year-old, who racked up a pretty impressive 19 assists in all competitions for Athletic Bilbao last season, has also really impressed at Euro 2024 so far.

There is a growing clamour for the winger's services, amid claims there is a £49 million release clause in his contract, but Williams could also command extortionate wages given he already earns £200,000-per-week at Bilbao.

Barcelona decision opens door for Tottenham to move for Williams

According to Football Insider, Barcelona have decided to pull out of the race for Williams due to his salary demands, which has made the Premier League his most likely destination as things stand.

Spain star Nico Williams

Laporta appears to have inadvertently handed Spurs a potential opportunity, as it was reported that Williams favoured a move to Barcelona, but the Camp Nou is now off the table.

Tottenham are targeting Williams ahead of a potential swoop ahead of Barca, as per FI, and it is believed those within the club see the La Liga starlet as a "star in the making".

Liverpool make contact to sign £100m+ star who has same agent as Nunez

Liverpool have reportedly made contact with a summer target who could cost over £100m this summer, as Michael Edwards weighs up what would be a statement signing in the coming months.

Liverpool transfer news

With a new era underway under Arne Slot and Edwards in a higher role than ever, it could be a busy summer for Liverpool. The Reds showed glimpses of what their new project is capable of last season, winning the Carabao Cup and finishing third in the Premier League after falling away in the title race late on. Now, it is up to Slot to pick up where Jurgen Klopp left off, perhaps using the transfer window to do just that.

Liverpool enquire over Bellingham 2.0 who's “destined for elite football”

Arne Slot could turn this talented teenager into a real world-beater.

ByAngus Sinclair Jun 7, 2024

The reports have already been flooding in with a number of names linked with an Anfield move this summer, whether that's Rodrygo, Leny Yoro or Johan Bakayoko. But it remains to be seen just how they will splash the cash in the transfer window, as Slot looks to shape the current squad away from Klopp's vision and into his own. With that said, it's clear that one player would help do exactly that.

According to Graeme Bailey for HITC, Liverpool have made contact with Joao Neves over a potential move this summer, but are set to be priced out of a move for the midfielder by his £102m release clause at Benfica. Interested alongside Manchester United and Arsenal, Liverpool and their Premier League rivals would have been hoping to see room for negotiation appear, alas the Portuguese side are seemingly set to remain firm on Neves' release clause.

Benfica's Joao Neves

Under the same agency as Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota, the Reds may have found a small advantage in personal negotiations with the young defensive midfielder, but any such talks will be on hold unless they trigger his hefty release clause.

"Excellent" Neves could replace Endo

As solid as Wataru Endo has been since arriving at Liverpool, in a welcome surprise for all those at Anfield, the Japan international is already 31 years old and the Reds need a long-term solution in the form of Neves. Whilst they currently remain unwilling to trigger his release clause, Liverpool shouldn't let such a talent fall into the hands of Premier League arrivals, especially when they arguably need a player of his calibre for years to come.

The 19-year-old enjoyed an excellent season at Benfica and is only likely to get even better from here, with his work on and off the ball exceeding that of Endo's.

What's more, Liverpool would be getting one over on rivals Manchester United if they pulled off a U-turn and triggered Neves' release clause, especially after he received the approval of Red Devils captain Bruno Fernandes.

Fernandes told SportTV via HITC: "I don’t know if United rumours are true. But I know he is ready for that big jump. He is an excellent player. He’s with the National team, that’s also why the big clubs are after him.”

Ex-Aston Villa scout says £27m Spurs attacker could choose to join Emery

One of Unai Emery's former players could choose to join Aston Villa from a Premier League rival this summer, according to a former scout.

Aston Villa transfer rumours

After finishing 4th in the 2023/24 Premier League table, Aston Villa are set for a busy 2024 summer transfer window as they aim to make their squad ready to compete with Europe's elite in the 2024/25 Champions League later this year.

The Villans could have an astute option amid their financial trouble.

ByEmilio Galantini Jun 8, 2024

At present, it appears Unai Emery is quite focused on securing some midfield reinforcements this summer. Douglas Luiz and John McGinn have been standout options for the Midlands outfit over the last year and will likely give a good account of themselves in Europe's premier competition. However, if Villa are to compete well in the Premier League and Champions League simutaneously, they will need quality depth.

In turn, the Villans have already been linked with a number of central midfield options. Despite having an impressive 2023/24 for a fairly lacklustre Chelsea team, Conor Gallagher has been named as a target for Aston Villa, with the club believed to have already entered preliminary negotiations for the Englishman.

However, Gallagher is seemingly not the only Premier League midfielder of interest to Villa, as the Midlands outfit have been credited with an interest in Fulham's Andreas Pereira recently.

£27m Tottenham attacker could choose to join Unai Emery

Now, a new name has been tipped to link back up with Aston Villa boss Unai Emery ahead of the forthcoming campaign.

The player in question is Giovani Lo Celso, who worked under the Spaniard during the second half of the 2021/22 season when he joined La Liga outfit Villarreal on loan from Tottenham. Lo Celso made 16 league and 6 Champions League appearances under Emery that season as Villarreal made it to the semi-finals of Europe's top competition before losing out to Liverpool.

While Emery left Villarreal in October 2022 for Villa, Lo Celso spent another campaign on loan in Spain before returning to Spurs for the 2023/24 season. The Argentinian made 22 league appearances this past term but failed to complete 90 minutes once.

Ex-Villa scout Bryan King believes Lo Celso, who has just one year left on his current contract in north London, would be open to linking back up with Emery this summer as Spurs look to sell the South American.

“Emery will be interested in a player he has worked with before,” King told Villa News. "Spurs want to sell him, so as long as the finances are right, I can imagine this is a deal that Villa would be interested in.

“I’m sure Lo Celso would be interested in the move. Regular football at a club playing in the UEFA Champions League? This could suit all parties involved.”

In terms of a potential transfer fee for Lo Celso, Tottenham paid £27m for his services back in 2019, but he is now valued at around £14m by Transfermarkt, suggesting his stock has dipped since his arrival in the Premier League.

But given his relative success in Spain – including under Emery – perhaps he can resurrect his career on these shores.

Mikel Arteta issues definitive response to Erling Haaland's 'stay humble' jibe after Man City's stunning last-gasp equaliser against Arsenal

Mikel Arteta has issued a definitive response to Erling Haaland’s “stay humble” jibe that was aimed in his direction after Arsenal’s draw at Man City.

City snatched point late on at the EtihadEmotions ran high on the field at full-timePlayers and coaches exchanged wordsFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

That contest ended in the most dramatic of fashions, with reigning Premier League champions City snatching a 98th-minute equaliser through John Stones. Said effort ensured that the game finished 2-2, with Arsenal having spent much of the second half desperately holding on with 10 men – following Leandro Trossard’s dismissal on the stroke of half-time.

AdvertisementAFPWHAT ARTETA SAID

Arteta took to the field afterwards, only to be met by a surprising verbal volley from City striker Haaland – who also found himself tangling with ex-Blues star Gabriel Jesus. Arsenal’s Spanish coach has no issue with what was said, telling reporters when being quizzed on the incident: “It’s part of football, part of sport. After the game, all that goes away and we move on. That’s it.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Emotions were running high at the final whistle – with an action-packed encounter delivering goals, a red card, a devastating injury to Rodri and a stunning finish – but Arteta makes no apologies for the way in which he set his side up to defend a narrow lead. He added: “Well, we had to play the game that we had to play. The first 10, 15 minutes, we couldn’t with 11 vs 11. Then we got much better. Then we were thrown in a very different context and did what every team does. They played 30 seconds with 10 men. Look what they did for 30 seconds. It’s normal what they did. We had to do it in a different way. We learnt from the past. Unfortunately we’ve been in the same situation a few times. We were in that same situation with Granit [Xhaka] after 38 minutes and we lost 5-0. We’d better learn. If not I would be thick, very thick.”

Arteta will always look to defend his players, regardless of what the likes of Haaland may think, and said when delivering his assessment of collective efforts at the Etihad Stadium: “Extremely proud. I think the desire that the team has to compete in any context and to adapt to different ways of playing and handle that emotionally and physically, is superb. Happy? No. But understanding how difficult that context is and what we had to deal with and as well with the players we had out, it was a significant improvement. But not happy because we want to win.”

Arsenal could sign their next Auba in free-scoring £120m "animal"

Arsenal have undergone a dramatic transformation under the leadership of Mikel Arteta in the four and a half years since he joined the club.

The Spaniard has taken them from mid-table underachievers to genuine contenders for both the Premier League and Champions League, all while watching his side increase their points tally year after year.

It would be fair to describe his current side as the best iteration yet, although they are missing something he had in years gone by: a prolific striker, a player like former captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

The Gabonese international certainly had his problems off the pitch, but in his pomp, he was as clinical as they came, boasting 92 goals in just 163 games for the club. Based on recent reports, the Gunners could soon have someone similar in the side once again.

Arsenal's striker search

According to Italian journalist Fabio Santini (via TVplay Official on Twitch), while Arsenal are making their appreciation and interest in Marcus Thuram clear to Inter Milan, they “would like to take” Lautaro Martinez.

Inter Milan'sLautaroMartinezreacts

The journalist revealed that while the Italian side do not want to sell the free-scoring “animal”, as national team coach Lionel Scaloni described him, they would be willing to let him go for around €140m, which converts to around £120m.

The Serie A champions’ willingness to consider a transfer is rooted in their ongoing contract negotiations with Martinez. As Santini points out, there is a significant disparity of around €3m – £2.5m – between the player’s demands and the club’s offer. If this gap cannot be bridged, Inter may see selling Martinez as the most viable option.

Inter Milan'sLautaroMartinezcelebrates scoring their second goal

It would certainly be a sizeable investment from the Gunners, but with comparisons to their former captain, it could be one worth making.

How Martinez compares to Aubameyang

While it’s certainly a notable comparison, it stems mainly from FBref, which looks at the underlying statistics for every player in Europe’s top five leagues and then compiles a list of the ten most similar players to the player in question. In Martinez’s case, Aubameyang is the fifth most similar player across the top five leagues.

Lautaro Martinez

While the Gabonese forward has struggled for form in recent years and endured a torrid time with Chelsea in the 2022/23 season – scoring just three times – he has been back to his very best for Marseille this year, racking up a staggering 30 goals and 11 assists in 51 games, meaning that comparisons to the version we have seen this campaign is high praise indeed.

With that said, how has FBref concluded that these two forwards are so similar? Well, they rank very closely for several key metrics, such as non-penalty expected goals and assists, goals scored, progressive carries, shots and shots on target, goals per shot, goal-creating actions, tackles won, blocks made and successful take-ons, all per 90.

The similarities between the two right-footed marksmen are clear as day, but if that isn’t enough to convince the Gunners to spend that extra cash on the player Lionel Messi described as “spectacular” and “complete,” then perhaps the fact that he has scored 27 goals and provided seven assists in just 44 games for the Nerazzurri this season is.

Ultimately, while it would be the most expensive transfer in Arsenal’s history, and by quite some way as well, it might just be worth pursuing, as adding a player reminiscent of the best version of Aubameyang into Arteta’s most complete side yet is an exciting and terrifying thought at the same time.

Tim Ambrose announces retirement at end of 2020 season

Warwickshire wicketkeeper played 11 Tests for England

ESPNcricinfo staff03-Jul-2020Tim Ambrose, the Warwickshire wicketkeeper, has announced that he will retire from professional cricket at the end of the 2020 season.Ambrose, who will turn 38 in December, has played more than 500 professional games across his career, including 11 Tests and six limited-overs internationals for England.Born in New South Wales, Ambrose’s British passport opened up a route into county cricket which he took up as a 17-year-old when he joined Sussex. He faced a battle with Matt Prior to be the club’s first-choice wicketkeeper, and regularly managed to displace him from the side, but left for Warwickshire at the end of the 2005 season to secure first-team cricket.Following a prolific 2007 season, England’s selectors took notice and included him in the Test squad for the winter tour of New Zealand. He looked like a long-term option as England’s wicketkeeper when he made a doughty half-century on debut in Hamilton and followed it up with 102 in his second Test, but he was overtaken by Prior and returned to the county ranks.ALSO READ: Warwickshire size up move for Bess as Patel successorHis form dipped significantly in 2010, a season in which he later revealed he had been suffering from depression, but Warwickshire kept him on, and he played a vital role in their title two years later.
