Will he be Rodgers’ biggest challenge yet as Liverpool boss?

Brendan Rodgers’ spell Liverpool manager has been embroiled with difficult personal challenges.

Only last season, when the Reds staged a surprise charge for the Premier League title, did he truly gain the faith of the Anfield fanbase, all the while not spending more than £20million on a single transfer.

In the process, he’s transformed a  Liverpool squad of overpriced, underachieving mercenaries into one of the most promising, progressive and value-for-money rosters in recent Mersey history. The Ulsterman’s most testing personal triumph thus far? Keeping Luis Suarez, despite the public relations disaster of the 2013 Confederations Cup, at the club a year longer than initially seemed possible.

But now Rodgers faces his biggest challenge to date in the form of Mario Balotelli, a striker dubbed unmanagable by Jose Mourinho in 2010 and sold by Manchester City in January 2013 after coming to blows with then Etihad boss Robert Mancini.

Reports of a £16million deal for the AC Milan star emerged last week, and he’s now expected to be named an official Liverpool player on Tuesday.

You can envisage the Liverpool gaffer’s light bulb moment. Less than a month ago, he ‘categorically told’ reporters in Los Angeles ‘that Balotelli would not be at Liverpool next season’. Since then, the idea has clearly lingered in Rodgers’ mind. ‘I did a good job keeping Suarez on a leash – perhaps I could do the same for Balotelli.’ It’s a justified rationale.

All the more considering that £16million is an exceptionally reasonable fee for a striker on the fringes of the European elite. Balotelli, although a volatile personality who has never scored more than twenty goals in a single season, has been threatening to take the footballing world by storm for some time through occasional displays of his incredible natural quality.

Now 24 years of age on the verge of joining his fourth major club, the Italy international’s Liverpool move could instigate a new sense of consistency to his game. Even if he can replicate his role in Manchester City’s 2012 Premier League title, or go some way to filling Luis Suarez’ goalscoring void, Balotelli will largely be viewed as a successful acquisition for the Mersey outfit. After all, the Reds’ long relationship with top quality strikers, through thick-and-thin, must always be maintained.

Yet Suarez and Balotelli are incredibly different animals. Equally detrimental at their worst, but polar opposites in terms of personality.

The Uruguayan’s pivotal flaw, for example, is a sense of over-competitiveness.  He dives, fouls and of course, sporadically bites people, to try and have some influence on the match in his team’s favour. Suarez’s work-rate, for a striker so talented, is exceptional, and his condemned actions are an extreme manifestation of that.

He burst into tears when Liverpool drew to Crystal Palace, effectively ending their title hopes, at the end of last season. In short, motivating the now-Barcelona star was never the challenge for Brendan Rodgers – rather, it was keeping his desire to win within the rules of the game.

Indeed, Suarez’s work ethic came to typify Liverpool last season. The Anfield side played some sensational football but it was backed up by arguably the hardest working midfield and strikeforce in the league. Few could match the likes of Jordan Henderson, Raheem Sterling, Steven Gerrard and Suarez in terms of pure industriousness and Rodgers has taken active steps to maintain that theme for the current season, having brought in Adam Lallana, Rickie Lambert, Alberto Moreno and Emre Can this summer, four players equally famed for committed and assiduous styles.

But getting Balotelli to buy into that ethos will be a monumental challenge within itself. In direct contrast to Suarez, the 24 year-old’s biggest failing – with the exception of essentially being a child trapped in the body of a top-class striker – is his lack of team spirit.

Even amid the most historic of wins or the most sensational of moments, there’s a persistent, unshakable feeling that Balotelli is doing it all for himself, rather than for his club or colleagues. Submerging the Italian into the all-for-one Liverpool mantra and getting him to parallel it through his own performances  will be Rodgers’ toughest test.

WANT MORE? >> Liverpool transfer news | Latest transfer news

Failing to do so, and it won’t be long before Balotelli sticks out like a sore thumb on Merseyside –  the collective Liverpool personality under Rodgers does not facilitate for passengers, regardless of their quality, and should the Italian become one, a rift will quickly emerge between himself and the rest of the squad.

If Suarez needed  a leash, Balotelli needs a bone. Although he foten brought Liverpool’s reputation into disrepute, one could never question the Uruguayan’s dedication – the prevailing problem was that on several occasions, it materialised in poor taste.

Balotelli, on the other hand, is like a teenager, refusing to commit to anything, determined to be his own island, as if doing otherwise would be decisively ‘uncool’. Whether Brendan Rodgers can find that added incentive, where the likes of Jose Mourinho and Roberto Mancini – two of the most respected managers in Europe – have failed, remains to be seen.

But perhaps the Mersey boss can find an avenue in the fact this will likely be Balotelli’s final opportunity to fail at a major club. In truth, the Italian needs Liverpool as much as they need him, to change the direction  of a career that’s only moved backwards since that unforgettable moment at the end of the 2011/12 season.

If Rodgers can tap into that, billing Liverpool as a platform to catch the attention of Real Madrid, Barcelona et al, the clubs a striker of Balotelli’s natural talents should be playing with, in a similar manner to how Anfield went on to serve Luis Suarez, then perhaps the 24 year-old will find the renewed personal motivation he desperately needs.

West Brom manager urges team "to move on"

Steve Clarke wants his West Brom side to get over this weekend’s defeat by Newcastle and channel frustrations into their next match against Southampton.

The Baggies were beaten 2-1 by Alan Pardew’s Newcastle side in their Premier League match this weekend during stoppage time. However, though he feels the team’s current point tally is unfair and cruel, Clarke believes his players have to start looking forward to their next fixture.

He said: “We’ve now got to dust ourselves down, look forward to the next game and try to take our frustrations out on Southampton. With a bit more luck, we could have more points than we have. In fact, we should have even more points,”

“To be stuck on 14 points after these last two games, it’s cruel. It’s not fair. But we have to move on, in football we’ve always got the next game. I think it will be difficult to get the players’ heads up at first. We’ll let them sulk for a couple of days. They deserve to do that. But by the time the next game comes round, on Monday week, we’ll be ready. I’ve got a good dressing room. I’ve got men in there. They understand that sometimes you don’t get what you deserve from a game. We’ve just got to take the frustrations of the last two weeks and channel it into the next game.”

Steve Clarke has admitted how deciding to pick Romelu Lukaku for the game over Shane Long was tough, saying how he has “really good forwards at the club.”

Revealed: Slight majority of West Ham fans prefer Anderson to Brahimi

West Ham fans have been debating summer swoops for two exciting wingers, and they’re completely split on which one they’d rather sign.

With Manuel Lanzini likely to miss most or all of the Premier League season, Manuel Pellegrini will have to bring in multiple attacking threats this summer.

For quite a while now, it has seemed like the first item on the manager’s shopping list is a creative winger, and both Felipe Anderson and Yacine Brahimi have been linked with moves.

Anderson seems the more likely of the two, and recent reports even suggested the Hammers had actually agreed a fee for the Brazilian, though that now appears to be wide of the mark.

Brahimi has also been linked with the Hammers on several occasions, and the Algerian international would certainly bring some pace and flair to the Hammers’ attack.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”256266″ player=”12034″ title=”3 Reasons We Love To Hate… Spain”]

The 28 year-old Brahimi, who grabbed nine goals and seven assists in 33 league appearances for Porto last season, would likely be cheaper than Anderson, which is perhaps why a section of fans are leaning that way.

The slight majority would prefer the Brazilian though, with 52 per cent voting to splash out on Anderson this summer.

Southampton fans react to confirmed starting XI against West Brom

Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino has made one change to the side that were beaten 2-0 by Liverpool at St Mary’s on Sunday for the FA Cup fifth round tie against West Bromwich Albion at the Hawthorns on Saturday, and Saints fans have been quick to have their say on the selection.

Nathan Redmond has replaced Oriol Romeu with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg dropping back alongside Mario Lemina in the middle of the park, while youngster Josh Sims makes the substitutes’ bench along with Manolo Gabbiadini, and Sofiane Boufal, Maya Yoshida and club captain Steven Davis all miss out because of injury.

The south coast outfit haven’t reached the quarter-finals of the FA Cup since the 2004/05 campaign, losing at this stage in each of the four times they have advanced to the last 16 since then, and they will see this as an opportunity to gain some much-needed confidence after the defeat to Jurgen Klopp’s side last weekend saw them slip back into the Premier League relegation zone.

Southampton supporters took to social media to give their thoughts on Pellegrino’s selection for the cup tie, and while one said “unfair on Gabbiadini”, another simply said “unbelievable!”

Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…

FIVE steps to the perfect transfer window at Newcastle

After such a bitterly disappointing end to the season, Newcastle United have not surprisingly already made moves in the transfer market. Ayoze Perez, Jack Colback and Siem De Jong have all made the move to Tyneside, with Alan Pardew still reportedly looking at several more. However, replacements for the likes of Loic Remy and Yohan Cabaye are desperately required.

However, the vultures are inevitably circling around some of the club’s prized assets. At the time of writing, Mathieu Debuchy’s move to Arsenal has been all but officially confirmed whilst rumours continue to link Moussa Sissoko elsewhere.

After such an abysmal downturn in form in 2014, Newcastle need to raise morale amongst the Toon Army this summer. Bearing this in mind, here’s the FIVE steps to the perfect transfer window on Tyneside.

GET CABELLA “OVER THE LINE”

Even if it is just to save face now, Newcastle really need to resolve the Remy Cabella saga sooner rather than later. The latest reports suggest that the Magpies have recently re-opened negotiations over the playmaker, although there are no indications that a deal is in the offing any time soon.

Even with the arrival of Siem De Jong, Newcastle are still in desperate need of further creative reinforcements. Despite Montpellier’s struggles, Cabella still managed to rack up an impressive fourteen goals and five assists in Ligue 1 last season.

Capable of operating centrally or out wide, it seems as though the 24 year old remains Pardew’s number one target in this window. Rather than letting the saga drag out for the rest of the summer, Newcastle need to either complete a deal or move on to an alternative sooner rather than later.

//www.youtube.com/embed/aytchoilOb8

RESOLVE THE BEN ARFA CONUNDRUM

Whilst Newcastle’s attack misfired time and time again in 2014, many members of the Toon Army were bemused by Hatem Ben Arfa’s continued absence from the starting eleven. Rather than sitting in the stands, surely the club should be finding a way to bring the best out of the enigmatic Frenchman on the pitch?

After all, this is a player that has already delivered several moments of individual magic on Tyneside, like this FA Cup strike against Blackburn.

Judging by the latest photos and reports though, Ben Arfa has been training away from the first team squad and isn’t exactly in the best of shape.

A decision on the controversial Frenchman needs to be made this summer. Ben Arfa is undoubtedly gifted but evidently needs to apply himself better to impress his manager. If the Frenchman simply doesn’t figure in Pardew’s plans, Newcastle should move the 27 year old on.

STRIKERS!

With the departures of Shola Ameobi, Luuk De Jong and Loic Remy, there is currently a worrying absence of strikers at the club. Papiss Cisse is in the midst of recovering from a long term injury and while Siem De Jong can play up top, the Dutchman prefers a deeper role.

Demba Ba, Joel Campbell, Alexandre Lacazette, Loic Remy and Emmanuel Riviere are amongst a host of names linked with a move to Tyneside this summer. The Magpies made a move for Pierre-Michel Lasogga, only for the striker to opt for a permanent switch to Hamburg instead.

In any case, at least two strikers need to arrive at Newcastle sooner rather than later. Pardew’s side failed to score on too many occasions in 2014, a trait that they simply cannot afford to continue into the new season.

REPLACE KEY PLAYERS

After the deadline day sale of Andy Carroll and the subsequent downturn in form back in 2011, one would have hoped that Newcastle would understand the need to replace key players. Yet despite knowing of Yohan Cabaye’s departure for months, the Magpies repeated the same mistake last season with disastrous consequences.

Especially with such a threadbare squad, Newcastle simply cannot afford to allow key men to leave without signing a replacement. At the time of writing, Debuchy’s move to Arsenal has been all but confirmed whilst several reports have linked Sissoko with a move elsewhere.

If the big boys come calling, Newcastle aren’t in the position to realistically keep hold of their star names. But if any do depart St James’ Park this summer, Pardew needs to be granted at least some of the money to sign adequate replacements.

CLEAR OUT THE DEADWOOD

Despite having such a thin squad, there is still currently a fair amount of deadwood on Tyneside. The likes of Jonas Gutierrez, Sylvain Marveaux and Gabriel Obertan barely featured last season, whilst serious question marks linger over whether Steven Taylor and Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa should remain at the club.

For a club operating on such a strict budget, it is somewhat of a surprise that a select few are still at Newcastle. Dan Gosling and James Tavernier have already been released, but there is a suggestion that several more should follow. If any do depart though, Pardew should again be granted the finance to find better quality replacements, even if it is just for squad depth.

Caption Competition: Hodgson has a quiet word with Wenger

Arsenal crashed to a 2-0 defeat to Bundesliga club Schalke at the Emirates Stadium in the week, which meant that the Gunners still have plenty of work to do to qualify for the knock-out stages of the Champions League.

Arsenal were not helped by the fact that manager Arsene Wenger had to watch the match from the stands on Tuesday night as the Frenchman completed his touchline ban handed out by UEFA for his actions last season.

While Wenger was in the stands, England manager Roy Hodgson took the opportunity to have a quiet word with him. What were they talking about? The potential return of Arsenal and England midfielder Jack Wilshere perhaps?

Leeds fans desperate for Wiedwald to leave

Leeds United goalkeeper Felix Wiedwald could leave Elland Road as soon as this week, as covered by German newspaper Bild.

[ad_pod ]

Wiedwald joined Leeds from Werder Bremen in last summer’s transfer window, with the German signing a three-year contract with the Championship club.

The 28-year-old started the 2017-18 season as the number one, but lost his place in the side following a string of errors.

It is understood that new Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa wants Wiedwald to leave Elland Road as soon as possible as he plans for the new campaign.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”256220″ player=”12034″ title=”Watch Chattin’ Shirt World Cup Absentees”]

And it is being reported that the stopper’s contract could be terminated as soon as this week, which would allow him to join Eintracht Frankfurt ahead of the 2018-19 season.

The Leeds fans have been reacting to the speculation on social media, and it would be fair to say that they are looking forward to the struggling goalkeeper leaving the club.

A selection of the Twitter reaction from the supporters, who criticised Wiedwald throughout last season, can be seen below:

Arsenal fans absolutely loved Aaron Ramsey’s display against Everton

Aaron Ramsey was in scintillating form for Arsenal on Saturday at home to Everton, scoring a hat-trick for the first time ever in his professional career that contributed towards a 5-1 win in the English Premier League.

Given more attacking responsibility after the departure of Alexis Sanchez, the Welsh international exploited the space between the Toffees’ midfield and defence expertly, making a number of devastating runs that bamboozled Sam Allardyce’s side all evening.

On a night that the Gunners also introduced new signings Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to home supporters, it was Ramsey who shone brightest, leaving fans absolutely delighted.

They believe he can take his game to new heights over the coming weeks and months, with some even suggesting he is one of the side’s most underrated players.

With a huge match away to Tottenham next Saturday, fans will be hoping he can produce a similar performance in the big derby.

They took to Twitter to share their thoughts on his performance against Everton…

Three Reasons Manchester United must sack Moyes

Okay, it’s a little fashionable to get on David Moyes’ back, but after today’s loss at Everton the calls for his sacking have gathered even more momentum. The Red Devils have gone from champions to a midtable club in the space of just 12 months, and even the fiercest defender of the Scot would have to admit that he’s been a big part of the decline. With the likes of Jurgen Klopp and Louis van Gaal supposedly available, how long can Moyes hold on? Here are three reasons we think he has to go.

Tactically awful

United entered the first half like lambs heading to the slaughter, with Moyes having fielded a midfield devoid of pace and dynamism. Everton quickly cut through and exposed the Red Devils’ soft side.

https://vine.co/v/M19xMQn31vu/embed/simple

Big summer ahead

With this season now a write off, the summer transfer market appears to be pivotal for United. With £200m to spend, can Moyes be trusted to get the right players?

He’s lost the fans

There was patience at first, but now the #MoyesOut has gone almost viral on every matchday. The fans are the lifeblood of clubs, so their views do count.

For some Arsenal fans its all gone a little quiet

Arsenal couldn’t have picked a better time to let the world know exactly how much money they had in their pockets. As Matt Law put it earlier this week, “the drinks are on you, Arsene.” The thing is, the club were never going to be in great danger by releasing it’s financial information at this time; Arsene Wenger was simply doing too well for sections of support to sharpen the knives. But is it enough?

I don’t think Arsene Wenger has a real problem this season unless he makes one for himself. Those situations where January rolls around and the club are in desperate need for a player but they decide to sit on that £50million for an even rainier day. The club are not beyond another real injury crisis and the need for some action. But right now, there really isn’t any reason for supporters to question the club.

The contract situation with a number of players is something that still grates many supports. How can the club find themselves in this situation once again? But there’s a real difference in Wenger’s stance over this Theo Walcott saga. Yes, the player is free to walk at the end of the season, but have we ever been made to believe that Walcott holds all the power in this ordeal? Wenger’s not having anymore of it, nor is the club. They’ve been ransacked and significantly weakened by clubs and want-away players in the past, but not this time around.

The other real point of action which has forced many of the boo-boys away is the business the club have done over the summer transfer window. The thing about Arsenal is that many supporters know the club won’t pay big money for players, and that’s fine. Fans do, however, want to see the club take a gamble and pull the trigger when there’s a good offer on the table, an offer that resembles a Spanish international available at a bargain price. How many fans would have been sweating on the deal for Santi Cazorla being called off at the last minute by the manager? That’s the real problem and the reason for much of the dissent. The club don’t need a £40million midfielder when there’s one just as good available for a third of the price, but the supporters need the club to make those deals and make the squad stronger.

It also bodes well that the team have scored 12 goals in their last two home games. The goals aren’t a massive problem for the Gunners, despite the calls from outsiders that Olivier Giroud would fail to step up. Patience is needed with him and fans understand that. The performances of the team also looks to be greatly improving on what we saw last season, but that’s a another plus for the manager. Wenger is acknowledging the shortcomings of certain areas on the pitch and is addressing them. Could the club really have gone into another battle with an army who had nothing to fight with? It becomes sickening and it’s hard to understand. But those fears have been laid to rest, at least for now.

There will continue to be supporters who are not entirely trusting of the modern Arsene Wenger and miss the partnership he had with David Dein. This new Arsenal is one that crumbles under pressure, has nothing left in the tank at the business end of the season, and at times has lacked real quality across the pitch. A fair assessment of the current squad? Absolutely not. The team have strengthened and are taking a no nonsense attitude against players who are attempting to hold the club to ransom.

But it only takes a string of bad results for the wounds to open up again. However, I’m not entirely convinced that the dissent will be spread throughout the fan base. To reiterate, the club have taken steps to move forward and adapt to the loss of their real attacking strengths of last season. That’s all that fans wanted to see, not the club sitting back telling everyone it’s ok and then revealing profits that would be applauded at any other club. Are they applauding because Arsenal are such a well run club, or because the team are no real threat to the big teams in England and Europe?
