Coote has been handed a fresh suspension ahead of the new season after making derogatory comments about former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp in a video that was filmed during lockdown and later leaked online. Other claims were levelled against Coote, leading to him admitting to drug use, and he has since been sacked from the Professional Game Match Officials (PGMO) organisation.

Now, Webb has weighed in on the prospect of Coote one day officiating again. And the chief refereeing officer believes that the disgraced official would "find it very difficult" to work his way back to elite officiating.

  • WHAT WEBB SAID

Webb said, per The Guardian: “I think it’d be really difficult for David to come back, I’m afraid to say.

“He is somebody that we stay in contact with, somebody who was part of our refereeing family for a long time and served the game as well for a long period of time and I’ve known him personally for many years. So it’s sad what happened with David, but I would think it would be a challenging thing for him to come back.”

He added: “It became apparent that David had made some bad choices away from the football field. He was an employee of ours. So obviously we had to care for him and we had to try to understand why he made some of those choices and where they connected to the job that he had.

“We spoke to all of our officials as well other officials and said: ‘How are you feeling about all of this?’ And there was some feedback that came back from them about the support that they think they need. And then it was a good time for us to reflect on the services that we do provide within our own staff expertise.”

'Bigger and better' – World Sevens women's soccer tournament announces American edition, with 7v7 competition set for December in Fort Lauderdale

The seven-a-side tournament, which will offer a $5 million prize pot, is bringing its second edition to the United States

  • World Sevens Football announces United States edition
  • Will play tournament in Florida from December 5-7
  • Seven-a-side format includes $5 million prize
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Women's Sevens football has lined up its second edition, and will come to the United States in December, the competition organizers announced Tuesday.

The next edition will take place Dec. 5-7, 2025, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, at Beyond Bancard Field – home of USL Super League side Fort Lauderdale United FC.

The first iteration of the seven a side tournament was held in Portugal in May, and drew a series of high-profile clubs from across the world. Bayern Munich were crowned champions. The competition offers a $5M total prize pot, with $2M going to the winners, and the rest shared among the participating clubs based on performance.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

This edition will be "bigger and better" than the original tournament, organizers promised. The inaugural competition featured eight European clubs, all of which sent some of their best talents to participate in the two day event.

There is no confirmation yet on which teams will play, and clubs from outside of Europe have been considered as potential participants. Former USWNT stars Tobin Heath and Kelley O'Hara are among those involved in the planning of the competition after a successful first iteration.

  • WHAT ADRIAN JACOB SAID

Adrian Jacob, head of W7s and former executive for Chelsea FC women, promised that the second version of the tournament will only improve on the first.

"We thought it was really successful," he said. This one is going to be bigger and better. We're going to take what we did from the last one, we're going to bring it to the Americas. And we are really, really excited."

Jacob also pointed out that the United States was the logical next step for the tournament, saying "We want to reach all different corners of the world with World Sevens. Once we had one in Europe, it was always going to be in North America, or Central America, or in the Americas, with all the different clubs there.

"You know, football isn't concentrated on Europe. The fan base is everywhere, and the way we can elevate the game is globally. There's so much we can do. And obviously, with everything that's going on in the States, in the Americas, women's football is growing hugely, absolutely everywhere."

    WHAT KELLEY O'HARA SAID

O'Hara, who registered 160 caps for the USWNT, pointed out that the differentiation of the tournament could be key in its success.

"We want a place where players can enjoy themselves, have fun, but we want it to be good football. We want it to be competitive," she said. "So that went into the thinking of the clubs that we brought in and how we set it up. Obviously there's a very big prize purse on the line, and that contributes to players taking it seriously and wanting to win.

"And the reality is, you have top link teams and clubs from around the world like that's bragging rights. People are going in and they're having a good time. They're enjoying themselves. They're, you know, a little bit looser ahead of the games."

The decision to award the Blaugrana the penalty sparked a debate among fans and experts. Yamal twisted and turned inside the Rayo box before going down under a challenge from Rayo left-back Pep Chavarria. The referee pointed to the spot and awarded a spot-kick to the visitors, but Rayo players had no scope of challenging the call due to a breakdown in the VAR system. Both teams were earlier informed about the technical glitch.

'We were outnumbered in games that mattered' – Clint Dempsey calls on USMNT to put better product on field so fans return to watch national team at 2026 World Cup

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Former U.S. men's national team forward Clint Dempsey believes that success on the pitch in the buildup to the 2026 FIFA World Cup will help U.S. Soccer fill seats with fans from the United States next summer at the tournament, which will be hosted in the U.S., Mexico, and Canada.

At the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup, which was also hosted in the United States, national team manager Mauricio Pochettino and current players both noted that crowds in St. Louis, where they played Guatemala, and in Houston, where they played Mexico, were overwhelmingly supporting their opposition.

"We were outnumbered in the games that mattered in terms of the semifinal and then final. There were more fans for the opposing team. So it's up to the national team players to put a product on the field that makes people want to go spend their hard-earned money," Dempsey said in an interview with The Associated Press. "I think with everybody being back and having that fight and kind of mixing that together with the quality, I think that will give people motivation to go out there and support this team."

  • AFP

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The USMNT has 10 friendlies left until the start of the World Cup, with two matches per FIFA international window in September, October, November, March, and June before the start of next summer's competition on June 12.

The U.S. will begin their World Cup journey at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, before playing their second Group Stage match in Seattle, and then returning to Inglewood for their third and final match of the opening round.

"I want to see a team that is playing in an exciting style, whether it's defending well, building out of the back, getting forward, creating chances, getting goals," Dempsey said. "I just want to see the fight and the grit that we saw in the Gold Cup, just with more quality. That's what I'm looking forward to, that team that gets you believing again that they can go and win games against top competition."

  • WHAT DEMPSEY SAID

Dempsey, who is tied with Landon Donovan at 57 goals as the USMNT's all-time leading scorer, played 141 times for the national team. He represented the USA at the 2006, 2010, and 2014 World Cups and was part of the roster that failed to qualify for the 2018 competition in Russia.

The former Fulham ace believes that the holdover from the 2018 team to the 2022 squad lacked veteran leadership, with defender DeAndre Yedlin the only player from the previous cycle to make the squad for the Qatar World Cup.

The U.S., who were winners of the CONCACAF Nations League in 2021, 2023, and 2024, were eliminated in the Group Stage of Copa America in 2024, and manager Gregg Berhalter – who led the team in 2022 – was fired shortly thereafter. Dempsey hopes the current group will rally under Pochettino.

"There wasn't that big mix of a lot of older players kind of passing down lessons that they learned over the years," Dempsey said. "And sometimes it's one of those situations where you need someone to shake things up, right? You don't know if it's egos. You don't know what is the reason for why things don't work out. So I think after Copa América after Nations League, there definitely needed to be some things shook up.

"And I think the more that people kind of look over their shoulder a little bit, their spots are not guaranteed, you have a culture that through training you can fight your way into getting into that starting lineup, I think people can get behind that and believe in that."

    WHAT NEXT?

At the 2026 World Cup, the U.S., as one of three co-hosts, will be seeded as such. That means that the USMNT will not have a top-10 ranked FIFA opponent in their group, and if they were to finish atop their group in the opening round, their odds of avoiding a heavyweight foe in the Round of 32 are boosted.

"If you are looking on numbers and looking on paper, you have a chance to do something special, and hopefully they take advantage of it," Dempsey said. "I think we need all the best players fit, playing week in, week out. I'm excited to see what they do with mixing a little bit more quality into this fighting and gritty kind of culture that you've seen throughout the Gold Cup."

The USMNT next report to the pitch in September, when they take on Korea and Japan in a pair of international friendlies.

Mayank Agarwal discharged after mid-flight medical emergency

He has reached Bengaluru and will check in to a private hospital for further investigation

Shashank Kishore31-Jan-2024Mayank Agarwal, the Karnataka captain, has been discharged from an Agartala hospital on Wednesday, a day after he was admitted following a mid-flight medical emergency. He arrived in Bengaluru on Wednesday evening. He is believed to have been given some injections to keep him pain-free for the duration of his travel back to Bengaluru. It’s likely Agarwal will consult doctors at a private hospital in the city as precaution. This automatically rules him out of Karnataka’s upcoming fifth-round Ranji Trophy fixture against Railways, beginning on Friday. On Tuesday, Agarwal had developed a burning sensation in his throat and mouth en route to Surat after consuming liquid from a bottle he believed contained drinking water. Agarwal suffered a bout of vomiting after which he was deplaned and rushed to ILS Hospitals, where he was declared “clinically stable”.

A medical bulletin issued by the hospital on Tuesday evening said Agarwal was experiencing some “oral irritation” and “swelling on the lips”. Subsequently, the Karnataka team manager issued a written complaint on Agarwal’s behalf to the Tripura Police, requesting an investigation into the incident.”While sitting on a flight, he saw a pouch in front of him, and thinking of it as water, drank it,” K Kiran Kumar (SP, Tripura West) told PTI on Tuesday. “He had swelling and ulcers in his mouth. His condition is normal, and his vitals are stable. His manager has made a complaint. We are registering the complaint, and will investigate the matter.”On Tuesday evening, IndiGo, the airline Agarwal was on, confirmed that the flight had to return to Agartala due to a medical emergency on board. Their press statement read: “IndiGo flight 6E 5177 operating from Agartala to Delhi returned to origin due to a medical emergency onboard. The passenger was offloaded and was rushed to the hospital for further medical assistance. The aircraft took off again for its destination at 1620h.”In Agarwal’s absence, Karnataka will be led by Nikin Jose, the 23-year-old batter. Karnataka are currently placed second in Group C, with two wins, a loss and a draw in four matches.

There is the promise of even more to come from Palmer at 23 years of age, with Chelsea continuing to invest heavily in the transfer market as more pieces of an intricate puzzle are drafted in alongside their talismanic playmaker.

  • WHAT PHELAN SAID

Quizzed on whether Palmer can go on to become a Ballon d’Or contender, former City and Chelsea defender Phelan – speaking in association with – told GOAL: "I think so, if he keeps developing. But he has to do it for England as well. He has got to get a chance with England.

"I think he’s a wonderful player. Manchester City must have been absolutely mad letting him go. Pep would be scratching his head wondering ‘what did I do?’ A No.10, creativity, courage, wants to go forward, wants to light up the game, acts dumb but is very clever. He wants to bring other players into the game with that wonderful left foot.

"Beautiful player and I get goose pimples watching him. Remember Tony Currie and Liam Brady back in the day, and Graham Rix and John Robertson, that’s what he reminds me of – that flair, that guile, that swagger. I think he’s absolutely brilliant."

    DID YOU KNOW?

There has already been talk of Palmer attracting admiring glances from afar, with big-spending PSG said to be one of his many suitors, but Phelan added on unwelcome transfer rumours: "Why would you go to PSG? You’re playing in a league that is nowhere near the Premier League. You want to play in the best league in the world. He’s only a young boy.

"Does he need the money? It’s like saying ‘go to Saudi Arabia’. No disrespect to the French league, but you want to be playing against the best players in the world at a young age. You want to be playing against the best teams.

"If you turned around and said Barcelona, then that’s different. Or Bayern Munich, yeah. No disrespect to PSG, they are the best team in Europe because they won the Champions League, but deep down in those deep roots, you want to play against top, top quality opposition and the best players. He has shown that."

Anxious South Africa fall to mindless adventure

A disappointing World Cup has just got worse. Just when it seemed a World Cup semi- final couldn’t get any lower than the first one, it did

Sambit Bal in St Lucia25-Apr-2007A disappointing World Cup has just got worse. Just when it seemed a World Cup semi-final couldn’t get any lower than the first one, it did. Sri Lanka’s win over New Zealand contained a sublime first half and at lunch the prospect remained of an exciting finish. Today, the game was over as a contest in the first ten overs. The difference between Australia and the rest in this tournament has been even broader than Matthew Hayden’s bat, but they didn’t need to bring out their best today. South Africa beat themselves thoroughly. All the talk about calming the mind and playing with confidence and patience came to a sorry pass in the morning when they batted like wrecks.A positive mindset has been the hallmark of South Africa’s one-day game, but, faced with an opponent superior to them in skill and mind, their batting descended to mindless adventure. They seemed over-wrought and over-anxious, and fell to a succession of poor strokes. Their premier batsmen set the tone.Graeme Smith’s one-day batting is based on bludgeoning. Predominantly an onside player, Smith has, in recent times, acquired the ability to free his arms and hit over the top on the offside. He did so successfully and repeatedly in the second half of his innings against England. But after choosing to bat on a pitch unknown to them, he decided to give Nathan Bracken the charge in the third over. He had faced only four balls. But no dismissal was more symptomatic of a plan gone awry than that of Jacques Kallis. Even though he had been South Africa’s most prolific batsman, the pace of his batting had invited more than a few questions. When these teams met earlier in the tournament, Kallis’ 63-ball 48 was deemed to have terminally halted South Africa’s victory charge. And before this match, Ricky Ponting had launched his own psychological warfare by letting the world know that Kallis was the man Australia wanted to get to the crease early.Kallis did come in early, but obviously he had decided this was the day to change a reputation. The first seven balls fetched merely a single, but off he went with the eighth, stepping out and wide of the stumps to carve, of all people, Glenn McGrath between cover and point. Ditto the next ball. The difference: the ball was full, Kallis missed, and it hit off. “Their top order batted exactly the way we wanted them to,” Ponting said after the match.

Inevitably, the “choking” question came up post-match. Smith was expecting it

McGrath bowled as well as he always does, but the wickets were earned easily. Ashwell Prince, the other batsman expected to hang around in a crisis, played the daftest of strokes, slashing a wide one to make the score 27 for 4, and when Mark Boucher hung his bat out next ball, the match was up for South Africa. The innings ended fittingly when Charl Langeveldt swung wildly at a full delivery. Six overs remained, and at other end stood Justin Kemp, South Africa’s highest scorer, on 49.Of the Australian bowlers, Shaun Tait, who was drafted in as the strike bowler in Brett Lee’s absence, was the most impressive. He has been Australia’s most expensive bowler among the specialists, but with 23 wickets, he is their most successful behind McGrath, who has a World Cup record of 25. Tait bowled with pace and curved the ball into the right handers. One such ball squeezed between leg stump and the pads of Herschelle Gibbs, one of the two South African batsmen to play with any measure of poise. It was South Africa’s lowest one-day score in a World Cup and, inevitably, the “choking” question came up post-match. Smith was expecting it. “I wouldn’t say we choked,” he said. To him, choking meant blowing a winning situation. But what about freezing on the big stage?Once again, South Africa were not able to play their best game in a big match. Their top order combusted and eight of their batsmen got themselves out. It was a massive under-performance that added to the emptiness of the World Cup. Their reputation will persist.

How Bell conquered Warne … almost

Late wickets by the Australians allowed them to get back on top at Perth, but England had plenty of moments to savour, thanks to the knocks by Alastair Cook and Ian Bell. The most enthralling battle of the day was the one between Bell and Shane Warne, who had already dismissed him four times in Tests. In this innings, Bell tackled Warne quite superbly, using his feet, getting to the pitch of the ball, and scoring 50 from 59 balls off him. Warne, though, still had the last word, nailing him eventually for 87.The pitch-map graphic from Warne to Bell shows the tactics used by the bowler, and how Bell negotiated that. Warne clearly attempted to pitch plenty of deliveries around or outside leg, and spin it across the face of the bat, but Bell was equal to the task through most of the day: he scored off deliveries which were well pitched up or wide outside leg. To deliveries pitched just outside leg, he defended. Bell also used his feet well to get to the pitch of the ball, which allowed him to score his runs well in front of the wicket.

Warne, though, finally got his man by inducing him to drive without getting to the pitch of the ball. The third graphic illustrates that perfectly: the white track shows the six that Bell hit off Warne in the 31st over, while the green one shows the delivery which dismissed him. The markers show where Bell was when he made contact with the ball – notice how close to the pitch he was when he hit the six.Other stats from the day170 – The partnership between Cook and Bell was England’s highest
second-wicket stand at Perth. The previous best was 95 between David Gower and Chris
Tavare in November 1982.

24.62 – Bell’s average in 16 innings against Australia. Before the start of the
2006-07 Ashes, Bell averaged 17.10 against them. He’s passed 50 on five occasions
but hasn’t been able to convert them into hundreds. Today’s 87 was his highest score
against Australia.40 – Cook’s strike-rate during his 116 off 290 balls is the second slowest
for a fifty-plus score in the series. The slowest is Ian Bell’s 50 off 162 balls at
Brisbane.21 years and 357 days – Cook’s age when he scored his century. He is the
second youngest England player to score a century in Australia, the youngest being
Jack Hearne, who scored 114 at Melbourne in 1911-12 aged 20 years and 323 days265 for 5 – England’s effort is already the second-highest total in the fourth
innings by a visiting team at Perth. They are currently behind South Africa who
scored 287 for 5 to earn a draw in 2005.
