Newcastle want £50m Champions League ace who they were in talks for in 2024

Newcastle United are among a host of “sharks” circling to sign an “elite” player in the summer transfer window, according to a fresh update.

Newcastle transfer news

A recent rumour has claimed that the Magpies actually once looked to sign Liverpool superstar Mohamed Salah when he was still a teenager back in 2011, long before he became one of the best players in the world. It was a transfer that failed to materialise, though, acting as one that got away.

In terms of new potential business for Newcastle, Paulo Dybala has emerged as a rumoured target, as they look to match his release clause at Roma this summer. The Argentine is now 31 years of age, however, and has never quite reached his potential, so there would be a risk in signing him despite his relatively cheap exit clause arond £10m.

Meanwhile, there has been plenty of talk surrounding Sandro Tonali’s future at St James’ Park, with a summer move to Juventus mooted in some quarters. Their current midfielder, Douglas Luiz, has been mentioned as being part of a swap deal involving the Magpies hero.

Victor Osimhen ended up not leaving Napoli on a permanent basis last summer, instead spending the 2024/25 season on loan at Galatasaray, and he has also been talked about as a possible incoming at Newcastle at the end of the season. That surely depends on what happens with Alexander Isak, however, as they look to hold on to their star striker.

Newcastle pushing to sign "elite" player

According to A Bola [via Sport Witness], Newcastle will go back in for Sporting CP centre-back Ousmane Diomande this summer, having already sent scouts to watch him in the past, also holding talks for the £50m-rated defender in 2024.

The 21-year-old is wanted by a host of top clubs, however, with Chelsea, Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool and Juventus all mentioned in the report.

Sporting centre-back Ousmane Diomande.

A new centre-back has to be near the top of Eddie Howe’s wishlist this summer, and in Diomande, he could have a wonderful option to bring in, having been described as an “elite” player by football talent scout Jacek Kulig.

The Ivorian’s quality in possession is highlighted by his passing statistics this season, with the centre-back completing 94.5% of his passes in the Primeira Liga in 2024/25 to date.

In comparison, Dan Burn (90.7%) and Sven Botman (88.3%) are behind him in that area of their game, so Howe and Paul Mitchell may feel that he can make Newcastle a more technically superior team moving forward.

Diomande is still at the start of his career, too, despite already appearing 87 times for Sporting – he has also started eight Champions League matches this season – so he could be a mainstay of Newcastle’s defence for years to come.

  • WHAT MODRIC SAID

Madrid wrapped up their La Liga season with a 2-0 win over Sociedad on Saturday. After the full-time whistle, he was joined on the pitch by his wife Vanja Bosnic and their children as the 39-year-old gave an emotional goodbye to the fans. In an emotional speech, Modric thanked the club, his team-mates and the fans.

"Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened," he said. "We have won a lot, we’ve had incredible moments. There are no words to thank you for all the love you’ve given me over the years."

Chelsea must sell Blues dud who's been a worse signing than Mudryk & Nkunku

Chelsea forward Christopher Nkunku looked as though he could’ve departed during the January transfer window after being touted with a move to various sides.

The French forward, who cost £52m in the summer of 2023, has mainly been an impact player under Enzo Maresca this campaign, starting just six matches in the Premier League.

However, the injury to Nicolas Jackson has allowed for increased minutes in the side, starting each of the past four outings, but only managing to find the back of the net on one occasion.

During his time at Stamford Bridge, Nkunku has registered 17 goals in 48 matches but ultimately has been unable to nail down a regular starting role when the squad is fully fit – with the club needing to cash in on him this summer.

That said, considering his relatively impressive record in front of goal, there have been two poorer signings, and they both need to be given the boot…

Mykhailo Mudryk’s stats for Chelsea

In January 2023, Chelsea secured an £88.5m deal for winger Mykhailo Mudryk from Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk – with real hope and expectation of transforming the club’s attack.

The Blues won the bidding war with fellow English side Arsenal for the 24-year-old, and he looked to be a phenomenal addition after his cameo off the bench against Liverpool for his debut.

He was unable to find the back of the net in any of his first 17 appearances, but registered seven strikes last year in his first full campaign at the Bridge.

This campaign has seen the Ukrainian score three times, but he has been provisionally suspended since December after testing positive for a banned substance – putting his Blues career on hold for now, at least.

Chelsea winger Mykhaylo Mudryk

After such an expensive fee was shelled out for his signature, it’s safe to say Mudryk hasn’t lived up to expectations, scoring just 10 goals in his 73 appearances for the club.

However, despite his lack of impact in the capital over recent years, one other first-team member has undoubtedly been a worse addition, with Maresca desperately needing to cash in on him this summer.

The Chelsea player who’s been a worse signing than Mudryk

Over the years, Chelsea have made countless additions to try and catapult themselves back to the top of the Premier League, but have so far been unable to achieve such a feat.

All areas of the pitch have been strengthened as a result of Todd Boehly’s investment, but one department evidently needs more signings – especially after the lack of form of one player.

Maresca has continuously shown faith in goalkeeper Robert Sanchez between the sticks, as seen by his tally of 22 appearances for the Blues throughout the 2024/25 campaign.

The Spaniard joined the club in the summer of 2023 for a reported £25m but has since failed to live up to his huge price tag, often prone to a mistake in recent months.

Whilst he’s been benched for each of the last three games, it’s been something that is deserved when delving into his stats from 2024/25, struggling to offer that presence needed to bolster their defensive record.

The 27-year-old has conceded 27 times in his 21 Premier League outings, an average of 1.3 goals conceded per 90, whilst also only completing 69% of passes, unable to effectively play out from the back – something which Maresca demands from his keepers.

Sanchez has also made five errors leading to goals, the joint-highest of any shot-stopper in the division, undoubtedly costing the Blues in key moments which could affect their chances of securing Champions League football.

Whilst he cost nowhere near as much as Mudryk, the fee paid still looks way too expensive for the lack of impact he’s made on the side, often hindering the squad as a result of his selection.

Maresca has finally made the right decision in opting for Filip Jorgensen ahead of Sanchez in recent games, with the Italian needing to offload him this summer and try to recoup as much of the £25m fee as possible.

More clinical than DCL: Everton now in huge race for "fantastic" £17m gem

Shifting their focus to who could have an impact on David Moyes’ side for years to come, Everton and The Friedkin Group now reportedly want to win the race to sign a rising star who’s already outscoring Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Everton eyeing impressive coup for Turkish teenager

On course to reach Premier League safety, the Toffees have the luxury of looking towards the summer transfer window in pursuit of the targets Moyes need if he is to take the Merseyside club back into the top half and beyond.

On that front, several names have already threatened to steal the headlines, including Tammy Abraham. The AS Roma forward has endured a mixed spell on loan at AC Milan and could now be on his way back to the Premier League for the first time since leaving Chelsea.

AC Milan'sTammyAbrahamreacts after the match

A forward with plenty of experience, the Englishman could be among the candidates to replace Calvert-Lewin, who is set to depart as a free agent when his contract expires this summer.

Leaving the Toffees short in attack, Friedkin’s first order of business should be set on reinforcing their attack, which could yet see a rising star arrive alongside Abraham.

According to Caught Offside, Everton now want to win the race to sign Semih Kilicsoy, who is valued at a maximum of €20m (£17m) by Besiktas this summer, a figure some outlets have suggested could be even lower. In what would be a bargain deal for a 19-year-old on the rise, the Toffees would be sharpening their frontline for years to come.

They’re not the only side interested, however, with Newcastle United and Aston Villa joining the race to ignite a Premier League battle this summer. With the ball potentially in the teenager’s court, Everton will be desperate to convince him that their project is one worth joining.

If Calvert-Lewin is to leave, then Friedkin would certainly be wise to rebuild their attack around Kilicsoy.

Everton should build arond "incredible" Kilicsoy

Amid interest from Newcastle and Aston Villa, there’s no doubt that Everton would be landing a sensational coup by signing Kilicsoy this summer. The Besiktas winger has enjoyed another impressive season in Turkey, scoring six goals and assisting another four in all competitions to follow up a debut campaign to remember for the season side which featured 15 goal involvements.

In comparison, Calvert-Lewin has managed just three goals throughout another campaign centred around his injury struggles and Everton continue to cope without him, the exit door is likely to swing open with a fair amount of willingness.

Just how the Toffees line up in attack at the start of next season remains to be seen, but Kilicsoy is certainly a target they will not want to miss out on. Praised for a “fantastic” season last year by football talent scout Jacek Kulig, the 19-year-old is one of Europe’s emerging talents and looks destined for the Premier League with or without a move to the Toffees.

Wolves eyeing free move to sign 32 y/o player who's scored Molineux winner

Wolverhampton Wanderers are now showing interest in a summer move for an “immense” defender, who is set to be available on a free transfer, according to a report.

Wolves move six clear of the drop

At one stage this season, Wolves found themselves in a perilous position, however, an uptick in form under the helm of Vitor Pereira has moved them six points clear of the Premier League relegation zone with 10 games left to play.

Pereira’s side are by no means out of the woods yet, but Ipswich Town and Leicester City are in very poor form, so it is becoming increasingly likely they will avoid relegation to the Championship.

As such, the Old Gold can tentatively start making plans for the summer transfer window, and they have recently sent scouts to watch Viktoria Plzen striker Rafiu Durosinmi.

The Wanderers may be forced to bring in a new forward, given that Matheus Cunha, who has a £62m release clause in his contract, has now started to attract widespread interest.

However, according to a report from The Daily Mail, Wolves are also keen to strengthen at the opposite end of the pitch, with it being revealed they are now showing an interest in Everton defender Michael Keane.

Keane is set to be available on a free transfer at the end of the season, upon the expiration of his contract with the Toffees, and a number of clubs are watching the centre-back.

Saudi Pro League side Al Riyad and MLS team FC Dallas are also looking at the Englishman, so Wolves may face competition for his signature, should they decide to formalise their interest.

"Immense" Keane is proven in the Premier League

The 32-year-old has a plethora of experience in England, making 249 appearances in the top flight across spells with Manchester United, Burnley and Everton, and he scored a late winner for the Merseyside club at Molineux back in 2021.

During his time with the Toffees, the 12-time England international has been lauded as “immense” by Harry Redknapp, but he has started to play more of a bit-part role this season, appearing for just two minutes in the Premier League in 2025.

AFC Bournemouth's Illya Zabarnyi shakes hands with Everton'sMichaelKeaneafter the match

As such, there are question marks over whether Wolves should pursue a move for the Everton defender, and it would admittedly not be the most exciting of summer signings.

However, Keane’s vast experience in the Premier League suggests he could do a good job as a squad player at the very least, and it is an added bonus that he is set to be available on a free transfer this summer, which would make it a low-risk move.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Zubimendi has claimed that he is not sure if he will end the summer in Spain, although he did confirm that he has yet to undergo a medical with the Gunners. The Spain international is a top target for the north London club but both Sociedad's president and technical director have hinted he could stay.

  • WHAT MARTIN ZUBIMENDI SAID

Zubimendi told Radiogaceta de los Deportes: "Of course there are options, but it's true that it seems like it's going to be a different, long summer, and I don't know how it will end. I don't think thinking about that right now is my priority. I'm here with the national team, which I think is already quite demanding, and if I have to say something, then I will."

Asked about the reports that he had undergone a medical, he replied:  "It's an example of what surrounds football. Many times I wake up in the morning and read things that I didn't know I had done. That was a clear example. It's true that I don't take it very seriously, but anyway, I uploaded those photos to emphasize a little that it wasn't exactly the reality that was happening."

Man Utd's controversial Club World Cup: FA Cup furore, David Beckham's sending off and how the Red Devils bombed in Brazil 25 years ago

United might not be involved in FIFA's rebooted tournament this time around, but their participation in its first edition will never be forgotten

It was early January at the start of the new millennium and normally Manchester United would have been training in sub-zero temperatures while preparing for an FA Cup third-round tie. Instead, they were in Brazil at the height of summer for the inaugural FIFA Club World Cup, then known as the Club World Championship.

Teddy Sheringham was diving headfirst into the sea; Gary Neville was playing beach volleyball with locals on the Copacabana; Mark Bosnich was acting out a mock medal celebration to wind up Dwight Yorke and Jaap Stam after beating them in a swimming race.

Phil Neville had insisted to fans at the team hotel that "we're not on holiday", but it certainly seemed like it to the Brazilian press, who asked Sir Alex Ferguson whether his team were taking the tournament seriously enough. "You've got the wrong impression if you think that," he retorted. Later on during his side's stay, Ferguson looked up from outside the team hotel to see his midfielder Nicky Butt flying above him on a hang glider.

The British media corps were even more appalled at the holiday vibes as United had taken the unthinkable decision to not participate in the FA Cup at all so as to be in South America. And so while United will not be partaking in this year's reimagined Club World Cup in the United States, their doomed venture in FIFA's very first edition of the tournament back in 2000 remains seared into the memory of the club, albeit for the wrong reasons…

  • Country in uproar

It is one of the most bizarre newspaper front pages in memory. had canvassed the opinion of 14 people of interest with diverse positions of power, such as Prime Minister Tony Blair, cricketing great Ian Botham, famous film critic Barry Norman, a soldier from the Falklands War and the widow of a murdered headmaster. The subject matter? United's threat to drop out of the FA Cup in order to play in the Club World Cup.

'Is there anyone left in Britain who does not think Man Utd should be in the Cup?' asked the headline above the slogan 'Save the FA Cup'. That front page is often revisited and ridiculed on social media, but it is a reminder of the shockwaves United had generated by choosing to not play at all in the FA Cup, which they had won a record 10 times and lifted the previous year on their way to completing the treble. And by winning the Champions League, the jewel in the crown, they earned themselves an invite to participate in FIFA’s brand new club tournament.

Although it might not have looked like it as the players cavorted on the Copacabana in their swimsuits, United were in an unenviable position. They felt that they had to honour the invitation and play in the Club World Cup in order to appease the English FA, who were bidding to host the 2006 World Cup. Ferguson and chairman Martin Edwards felt a huge weight of responsibility for the team to play at the tournament, despite it coinciding with the third round of the FA Cup.

    'No-win situation'

It is a wonder that the FA did not simply postpone their cup tie until later in the month. Ferguson, however, was concerned about player burnout and the effect it would have on his side in the title race.

"We can't go for them all," he said. "We can't play in the FA Cup and in Brazil. That would be impossible. We're in a no-win situation here. The criticism we would have received if we hadn't gone would have been unthinkable – and that's a Scotsman speaking!"

United's players felt deeply uncomfortable with the whole affair, as David Beckham later revealed: "We were looking forward to going to Brazil, looking forward to playing clubs from all over the world. But nobody was happy about missing out on the FA Cup. It didn’t feel right not to defend the trophy. Perhaps we could have been given a bye through to the fourth round while we were away and joined when we came back, I don’t know. That was for the FA and the club to sort out."

As it turned out, United had nothing to fear as they ended up romping to the Premier League title, finishing 18 points clear of Arsenal. But not taking part in the FA Cup was a sleight from which the oldest knockout competition in the game's history has arguably never really recovered from.

    Ferguson's regret

Whenever people ask why the FA Cup has lost its mystique, with teams now often rotating their squads to prepare for the next league game, United's no show in 2000 will always be brought up. And understandably so; if the biggest team in the country at the time couldn't be bothered to even enter it, then why should anyone else care?

"It turned out to be a disaster for us," Ferguson later admitted. "We did it to help England's World Cup bid and that was the political situation. I regretted it because we got nothing but stick and terrible criticism for not being in the FA Cup when really, it wasn't our fault at all. The Football Association and the government felt that playing in this tournament would help England's bid to host the 2006 World Cup. There was a lot of undue criticism – but it was a great two-week break."

As it turned out, the fact that United did play in Brazil hardly helped the World Cup bid, as England finished third out of the four hopeful nations, only earning five of a potential 24 votes in the first round of voting and just two in the second round, behind South Africa and eventual winners Germany.

Ferguson, meanwhile, was wearing his rose-tinted spectacles when looking back so fondly on the tournament, given it turned out to be a truly humbling experience for his side.

    Beckham's temper strikes again

The local press painted United as arrogant from the off and felt that they were not giving the new tournament the respect it deserved. Still, the team were given a strong reception when they arrived at the airport in Rio de Janeiro. There was predictable fanfare for Beckham, with one woman telling a local newspaper: "If that Spice Girl isn’t careful, someone here in Rio is going to steal her husband!" There was also an unusual group who made the effort to greet United: Fans of Flamengo, the big rivals of Vasco da Gama who would be facing the Red Devils in Group B.

United's first game, however, came against North American champions Necaxa of Mexico at a sparsely-attended Maracana. It turned out to be a thrilling game, a 1-1 draw that included two saved penalties, a late equaliser from Dwight Yorke and a red card for Beckham, who had kicked out at Jose Milian shortly before half-time. "The dismissal revived the doubts raised over Beckham's temper when he was sent off when playing for England in the 1998 World Cup – and once again left his team-mates a man short," read the s match report.

To make matters worse, the referee was Argentine. The foul was much clearer than the one on Diego Simeone 18 months earlier, but, as ever, Ferguson defended his star man: "It was a 50/50 ball and they both had their feet in the air. The Mexican players tried to get him sent off and the referee has reacted to that. It was particularly poor, I don't think we'll see him in many big games again." Yorke, who had made amends for spurning his penalty by levelling the game, added: "Everyone here is against us."

He's worth £20m: Leeds have already sold "unbelievable" Firpo replacement

Many supporters expected left-back Junior Firpo to depart Leeds United after relegation from the Premier League back in 2022/23, but he has remained a key part of the first-team squad.

The 28-year-old made 29 Championship appearances last campaign, notching eight assists as the Whites fell at the final hurdle, losing in the play-off final during Daniel Farke’s first year at the club.

However, the Dominican international has managed 25 appearances in the ongoing campaign, already bettering his assist tally from the previous season, whilst finding the back of the net on three occasions.

Firpo has nailed down his starring role at Elland Road over the last couple of months, playing a pivotal role in their hunt to go one better and reach the Premier League after a two-year exile.

Despite his excellent form in Yorkshire, there are doubts over his long-term future at the club, with the latest update potentially disappointing some of the fanbase.

The update on Junior Firpo’s Leeds future

Whilst he’s been a first-team regular for the vast majority of 2024/25, Firpo’s contract with Leeds expires at the end of the season with no new deal on the horizon.

It was confirmed by TEAMtalk earlier this week that the defender has changed agents, with three foreign clubs already in talks to sign him on a pre-contract agreement.

Their sources have confirmed that it is “increasingly unlikely” to stay at Elland Road beyond this season, with former side Real Betis already interested in signing the 28-year-old.

If he were to depart at the end of the ongoing campaign, it would be a huge loss and one that would massively dent their ambitions of staying in the Premier League should they achieve promotion.

However, they would’ve had a readymade replacement for the Dominican international had they not sold one player who’s thrived away from Yorkshire in recent years.

The ex-Leeds star who would’ve been the perfect Firpo replacement

Leeds has been the home to numerous talented youngsters over the years, as seen with the likes of Archie Gray and Crysencio Summerville, who both departed the club for big money last summer.

Both left in deals that saw the club bank a hefty profit, subsequently aiding Farke in his attempts to invest in the side and making it second time lucky in their quest for promotion.

Another one of the players who should’ve been added to that list is left-back Leif Davis, who departed the Whites back in the summer of 2022 for a fee in the region of just £1m.

The 25-year-old looked as though he could’ve been one for the future, after making his debut for the club during 2018/19, but would remain as a fringe player until 2021/22 when he joined Bournemouth on loan.

He wouldn’t return to Elland Road, moving to Ipswich Town on a permanent basis just a couple of months later – a deal that would be a huge regret given his rise.

Davis, who’s since been labelled “unbelievable” by journalist Harvey Davies, has notched 34 assists from left-back over the last three seasons, playing a huge role in the Tractor Boys’ back-to-back promotions from League One.

He’s also registered six goals during the same time period, including a magnificent strike against Leicester City in the Premier League earlier this season.

As a result of his tremendous performances under Kieran McKenna in recent campaigns, Davis has now been valued at £20m by Transfermarkt, an increase of £19m on the fee they sold him for less than three years ago.

Given his rise and consistent showings, it certainly was a mistake to allow the 25-year-old to depart the club, having the talent to slot straight into the side.

Firpo’s potential departure adds another area for Farke to strengthen in the summer regardless of promotion, with Davis being the perfect player to fill the void had they not offloaded him.

Noni Madueke salary: How much does Chelsea star earn per week and annually in Premier League?

Everything you need to know about Noni Madueke's salary at Chelsea

English international Noni Madueke joined Premier League side Chelsea in the summer of 2023, following a standout spell with Eredivisie club PSV Eindhoven.

Known for his pace and flair on the wings, Madueke has delivered decisive moments for the London side in several matches. However, he has also faced criticism for a lack of discipline. Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca at some point even called out the winger for his complacency and urged him to work harder after losing his place in the starting eleven.

Madueke’s current contract at Stamford Bridge runs until the end of the 2029-30 season, and he earns a substantial salary. However, compared to Chelsea’s top earners, his wages are relatively modest.

  • Top 5 earners in the Premier League

Although Chelsea stars earn high salaries, their numbers are relatively less when compared to the top earners across the league.

Erling Haaland is the Premier League's top-paid player, with a nine-year contract at Manchester City until 2034. Kevin De Bruyne is second, and Mohamed Salah is third.

Casemiro is Manchester United's only entry at fourth, and Liverpool's Virgil Van Dijk is fifth.

Despite their substantially high earnings, none of the Arsenal players make it to the top five list of the highest-paid players across the league.

Highest paid players in the world

Premier League salaries are high, but these players are not the top earners globally.

Cristiano Ronaldo, the leading scorer in Champions League history, is the highest earner at Al Nassr. His former Real Madrid teammate, Karim Benzema, follows him.

Riyad Mahrez, previously with Manchester City, ranks third, while Sadio Mane and Kalidou Koulibaly from Senegal are fourth and fifth.
