Bayliss mum on Warner's future at Sunrisers Hyderabad

Warner watched Monday’s win over the Royals from the hotel after being dropped

Has Warner played his last game for Sunrisers Hyderabad?

David Warner is a name synonymous with Sunrisers Hyderabad. He captained them to the 2016 IPL title, he has scored 4014 runs for them at a healthy strike-rate of 142.59, and he has struck a chord with the people of Hyderabad with his frequent social-media posts around Telugu pop culture. This hasn’t been his year, though. He started the season as captain, lost the band, then lost his place in the first half, and now in the second half he was left to cheering on from the hotel room as Sunrisers pulled off only their second win of the tournament this year.David Warner seemed to indicate via an Instagram comment that he might not play again this season•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

On Instagram, Warner applauded the effort of his replacement Jason Roy, and then went on to suggest he might be done for the season already and might not even be making the trips to the ground. That’s something the Sunrisers coach Trevor Bayliss more or less confirmed, but also provided a reason for Warner’s staying back at the hotel.”We can’t make the final so have made a decision that we want the young players to experience not just the matches but time at the ground, around the set-up, and for this match we made the decision,” Bayliss said. “He was not the only experienced player we left back at the hotel [Kedar Jadhav and Shahbaz Nadeem were the others].

“We have a number of young players that haven’t been to the ground. Even as reserves. We wanted to give them an opportunity to come along and experience that. That may continue for a few more games yet. We don’t know.”We have got to sit down in a day or two and pick a team and pick a squad of 18. That’s just the way it is. Dave is obviously watching the game back in the hotel and giving the guys support. It is the same as everyone else. We are all in this together.”That Sunrisers have dropped Warner twice in a season, and that he is not part of the leadership group strategising at the ground, has raised speculation this might be the beginning of the end for Warner at the franchise. Bayliss said that was a decision to be made in the future.”Look that certainly has not been discussed,” Bayliss said. “It is something that… this is the last year before a major auction. Those decisions will be made further down the line. He has been a great contributor to Hyderabad Sunrisers for a number for a number of years now. He is very well respected with the amount of runs he has scored. I am sure he has got a lot more runs in him yet in the IPL.”These are decisions that can only be thought of when the terms of the auction are clear: mainly around how many players can be retained and how many RTM cards teams have.

It's Buttler vs Maxwell as Titans kick off against new-look PBKS

As Gill promises to maximise the powerplay, will Titans come out of their 2024 funk?

Hemant Brar24-Mar-20253:04

Cricinformed: Can Gill up his intent in IPL 2025?

Big picture

New season, fresh start. That seems to be Punjab Kings’ motto before every IPL season, and it’s no different this time. After IPL 2024, they retained only Prabhsimran Singh and Shashank Singh, two uncapped Indians, and brought back Arshdeep Singh and Harpreet Brar at the mega auction in November. The rest of the squad is new, as is their head coach Ricky Ponting.Ponting wants to make this “the greatest Punjab Kings team”. To be fair, the ingredients are there. Their new captain Shreyas Iyer had had a successful captain-coach relationship with Ponting at Delhi Capitals and led Kolkata Knight Riders to the title last year. Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis will lend muscle to the middle order, and Lockie Ferguson and Yuzvendra Chahal experience to the bowling unit. This is not the first time PBKS have looked this good, however, and their trophy cabinet remains empty.Related

  • Can Iyer and Ponting work their magic on chronic underperformers PBKS?

  • Titans bank heavily on new Gill-Buttler opening act

  • Gill wants Gujarat Titans to 'maximise the powerplay'

Gujarat Titans did not make so many changes. Shubman Gill remains their captain, Rashid Khan their magician and Rahul Tewatia their miracle man. But they’ve added Jos Buttler to their batting and revamped their fast-bowling attack, which now features Kagiso Rabada, Gerald Coetzee, Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna. Their middle order looks brittle, but this is not the first time Titans have looked less than ideal. We all know how they surprised everyone in their inaugural season in 2022.Just like Ponting, Gill has also made his goal public: “maximise the powerplay”. Last season, Titans were by far the slowest side in that phase, stuttering at 7.41 runs per over. Gill himself will have to play an active role if Titans are to improve that number. Among the 22 batters who faced at least 100 balls in the powerplay in IPL 2024, Gill had the fourth-lowest strike rate, 131.08. An improved performance will not only help Gill the Titans captain but also Gill the India player, who has lost his place in the T20I side.Shreyas Iyer will captain Punjab Kings for the first time•Punjab Kings

Team news and likely XIIs

Titans depend a lot on their top four, with their batting looking a lot less convincing thereafter, on paper at least. In the age of 250-plus totals, they might be the last remaining in the IPL.Gujarat Titans (probable): 1 Shubman Gill (capt), 2 (wk), 3 Sai Sudharsan, 4 , 5 Shahrukh Khan, 6 Washington Sundar, 7 Rahul Tewatia, 8 , 9 R Sai Kishore, 10 , 11 Mohammed Siraj, 12 Prasidh Krishna.Maxwell, Stoinis and Marco Jansen are likely to be the first-choice overseas picks for PBKS, with Josh Inglis and Azmatullah Omarzai competing for the fourth slot. If they go with Omarzai, Priyansh Arya could open the innings with Prabhsimran.Punjab Kings (probable): 1 Prabhsimran Singh, 2 (wk), 3 Shreyas Iyer (capt), 4 , 5 Nehal Wadhera, 6 , 7 Shashank Singh, 8 , 9 Harpreet Brar, 10 Vijaykumar Vyshak, 11 Arshdeep Singh, 12 Yuzvendra Chahal.

The big question

Who should be PBKS’ fourth overseas player? Picking Omarzai means opening with two uncapped Indian batters against a strong bowling attack. Picking Inglis leaves them with one fewer bowling option.

In the spotlight: Jos Buttler and Glenn Maxwell

Jos Buttler did not have much success as England’s white-ball captain, especially in the last couple of years of his stint, but his T20 stocks are as strong as ever. Since the start of 2024, he averages nearly 40 at a strike rate of almost 150 in the format. He was the only batter in IPL 2024 to score two hundreds. Given Titans need quick and sustained starts in the absence of big names in the middle order, Buttler could be their ideal opener.Glenn Maxwell is back at PBKS for the third time. In his first season for them, in 2014, he was the third-highest run-getter in the league with 552 runs at a strike rate of 187.75. In 2020, his last season with PBKS, he could manage only 108 runs in 11 innings and could not hit even one six. This time, he is coming off a successful BBL with Melbourne Stars: 325 runs at an average of 54.16 and a strike rate of 186.78. PBKS will hope he continues in the same vein.Rashid Khan and Rahul Tewatia are among the familiar faces at Titans•Arjun Singh/BCCI

Key stats

  • Gill has 1079 runs in T20s at the Narendra Modi Stadium, at an average of 71.93 and a strike rate of 163.23.
  • Earlier this year, Kagiso Rabada and Rashid Khan were the joint-highest wicket-takers for MI Cape Town in their successful run to the SA20 title.
  • Inglis strikes at 149.09 against fast bowlers and 145.74 against spin.
  • Only Jasprit Bumrah (6.06) and Matheesha Pathirana (8.12) had better death-overs economy rates than Rashid (8.94) and Chahal (9.00) in the last two IPL seasons (minimum ten overs in that phase).

Pitch and conditions

It’s difficult to predict how the pitch at the Narendra Modi Stadium will play. Last season, Titans were bowled out for 89 against Delhi Capitals and Sunrisers Hyderabad managed only 159 and 162 in their two outings. But the venue also saw Titans posting three totals of 199 or more, two of which were chased down, once by PBKS. In all, chasing teams won six of the eight games played in Ahmedabad in IPL 2024.

Next three fixtures

Titans’ next game is also at home, against Mumbai Indians on Saturday. After that, they will play two away games, against Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Sunrisers Hyderabad.PBKS’ schedule is the other way round. They will first play Lucknow Super Giants in Lucknow before hosting Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings in Mullanpur.

Williams, Ervine return to Zimbabwe squad for Bangladesh Tests

The only uncapped player in the squad is legspinner Vincent Masekesa

ESPNcricinfo staff07-Apr-2025Zimbabwe veteran Sean Williams will make his return to the Test squad for the upcoming tour of Bangladesh, as the team prepare for a two-match series starting April 20.Williams had missed Zimbabwe’s previous Test, against Ireland, due to a back injury. Both he as well as the captain Craig Ervine, who pulled out of the Ireland game due to the birth of his child, have been included in the 15-man squad for the Bangladesh series. Wessly Madhevere, who had been a last-minute call-up to replace Ervine in the Ireland series, keeps his place for the Bangladesh Tests.Overall, Zimbabwe have made three changes from the squad that took on Ireland in February. Wicketkeeper-batter Joylord Gumbie makes way for Tafadzwa Tsiga, who returns to the national fold two years after making his Test debut against West Indies. Also returning is left-arm spinner Wellington Masakadza, whose most recent Test appearance came during that same series against West Indies in 2023. He replaces young pace bowler Newman Nyamhuri.Fast bowler Blessing Muzarabani, who made history in February by becoming the first Zimbabwe pacer to claim seven wickets in a Test innings, will spearhead the bowling attack alongside Richard Ngarava. The only uncapped player in the squad is legspinner Vincent Masekesa.”We are very excited to be heading into a period where Test cricket will be our sole focus,” Zimbabwe head coach Justin Sammons said.”I am certain this group of players will continue to grow as individuals and as a team as they face new challenges in different conditions.”Zimbabwe will take on Bangladesh in the first Test in Sylhet from April 20, before moving to Chattogram for the second Test on April 28.This is Zimbabwe’s first Test in Bangladesh since February 2020, when the hosts secured victory in a one-off match in Dhaka by an innings and 106 runs.Squad: Craig Ervine (Captain), Brian Bennett, Johnathan Campbell, Ben Curran, Trevor Gwandu, Wessly Madhevere, Wellington Masakadza, Vincent Masekesa, Nyasha Mayavo, Blessing Muzarabani, Richard Ngarava, Victor Nyauchi, Tafadzwa Tsiga, Nicholas Welch, Sean Williams

Prabhsimran 91, Arshdeep's new-ball spell take PBKS towards playoffs

Against LSG, PBKS posted their 11th total of 200-plus in IPL, also aided by middle-order cameos

Alagappan Muthu04-May-20251:30

Is Prabhsimran finally living up to his promise?

Punjab Kings (PBKS) are marching towards a spot in the IPL 2025 playoffs, moving up to No. 2 on the table. They dispatched one of their main rivals, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), with a power-packed batting performance, scoring 236 for 5, and winning by 37 runs.

The headliner

Shreyas Iyer actually wanted to bowl at the toss. But he said he was “up for the competition”, and it seemed so was his team. They hit 34 boundaries in the innings – 16 sixes and 18 fours – en route their 11th total of 200-plus in the IPL. Only Mumbai Indians (MI) have more.Prabhsimran Singh was the architect of this chaos. He attacked nine of his first 15 deliveries, and in that time he could have been dismissed for 22 off 11 balls. But Nicholas Pooran put down a skier. When a similar ball came down just seconds later, Prabhsimran played the same shot and found the straight boundary. He is an intent machine with a very short memory. He made his third fifty on the trot, having come into this season with only four fifty-plus scores in his IPL career. There was a small period when Prabhsimran stalled. He got to 45 off 24 balls. Then made only 8 from the next 11 balls. but made up for that by hitting 38 off his last 13 deliveries.1:48

Rayudu: ‘Maybe Mayank Yadav isn’t ready yet’

The support acts

The batters at the other end matched Prabhsimran’s fire. In fact, every time LSG took a wicket, the new partnership began with a boundary within two deliveries, leaving the visitors with no place to hide. Iyer once again showed he is a changed man. Until IPL 2024, he was striking at 125. Since then, he has been striking at 163. That has not come at the cost of his productivity. He averaged 32 before. Now it’s 44.Shashank Singh played the perfect cameo, 33* off 15 balls, which included a six off Mayank Yadav that legit tried to scale up to one of the Dharamsala mountain tops.

LSG’s woes

Mayank went for 60 runs in his four overs, the joint-worst figures by an LSG bowler in the IPL. Avesh Khan leaked 26 runs in the 19th over, which included three fours and two sixes. Digvesh Rathi went for 40-plus in only one of his first nine matches. In his last two, he has gone for 48 and 46. At a time when they need to be peaking, LSG were floundering. Their best hope was that their top order fired.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Arshdeep kills the contest

Mitchell Marsh, Aiden Markram and Pooran had made 63% of all their team’s runs coming into this game. Arshdeep Singh knocked two of them out in the third over, and returned for the last man standing. LSG were reduced to 38 for 3, their lowest powerplay score this season. Rishabh Pant fell for 18 off 17 balls, his ninth score below 25 in 11 innings. His dismissal was a spectacle. He swung so hard at the ball that he lost control of the bat, which flew out to midwicket while the catch was taken at deep cover.

Fightback

There was more than half the innings left to play when ESPNcricinfo’s forecaster suggested that LSG’s chances of winning was down at 0.13%. Guess being 73 for 5 is bad chasing 237. The last specialist batting pair they had – Ayush Badoni (74 off 40 deliveries) and Abdul Samad – delayed the inevitable by putting on a partnership of 81 in 41 balls.

Bishop on Suryavanshi ton: unprecedented, mind-blowing, other-worldly

“Saw him maybe four months back when he came for the trials, all of us knew we had found something special,” says Vikram Rathour about Vaibhav Suryavanshi

ESPNcricinfo staff29-Apr-20254:33

Bishop on Suryavanshi’s record: ‘That was mind-blowing’

The adjectives came thick and fast: “remarkable,” “mind-blowing,” “other-worldly,” “unprecedented,” “exceptional.” Yet nothing could have truly prepared the cricket world for what unfolded on Monday night in Jaipur during IPL 2025. A 14-year-old kid, facing seasoned professionals with years of top-level experience, delivered a performance so astonishing that even Ian Bishop – a man who has witnessed more cricket than most – admitted, “It’s hard to really speak logic to this.”The basic facts, in case you missed it: Vaibhav Suryavanshi, from Bihar, who turned 14 after this IPL started, took on a bowling attack of Rashid Khan, Mohammed Siraj, Ishant Sharma, Washington Sundar, Prasidh Krishna, Karim Janat and R Sai Kishore – 694 international caps between them – and smashed them for 101 runs in 38 balls. It was the second-fastest century in the IPL, and it was much else besides. It might have come as a surprise to many, but not to Vikram Rathour, the Rajasthan Royals (RR) batting coach, who has been watching the INR 1.1 crore auction buy up close for the past few months.Related

“We have been watching it in [the] nets the last few months. So we knew what he was capable of and what kind of shots he can play,” Rathour said in the press conference after RR had beaten Gujarat Titans (GT) by eight wickets, chasing down 210 with 25 balls in hand. “But to do it in front of this kind of crowd and in a situation like this, against a really good bowling attack, was really special.”Saw him maybe four months back when he came for the trials. All of us knew we had found something special. It was up to us to nurture him and bring him to this level. Credit to him, he kept his nerve, he has a solid head on his shoulders, he has showed what he is capable of.”He certainly did, leaving Bishop and Varun Aaron searching for words on ESPNcricinfo’s Time Out show.”They are allowing young players to come in, most franchises, and be free, be fearless, ‘don’t worry about your failure’, and that’s a big shift in Indian cricket, with guys like Yashasvi Jaiswal and others,” Bishop said. “That’s a big shift in Indian cricket – let’s not look past that. A few generations ago, ‘play properly, you get two failures [and] you’re gone’. Now it’s a different culture.”

WATCH – Highlights of Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s record-breaking hundred on JioHotstar (India only)

It’s a culture that, in IPL 2025 alone, has thrown up future stars Priyansh Arya, Shaik Rasheed, Ayush Mhatre and now Suryavanshi.”I don’t care what GT served up [with the ball] on a platter, the kid is 14 years old! He demolished what was served to him tonight.” Bishop said. “You can take nothing away. Going forward, [we can ask] how do they come at him in the next game, how does he counter what’s going to be thrown at him, but for tonight, I don’t care whether [the bowlers] served him oranges…”I hope we don’t go too far with praising him, but you cannot step back from the fact that tonight was absolutely mind-blowing, other-wordly.”

How does a 14-year-old hit with such power?

On the night, Suryavanshi hit 11 sixes and seven fours. Most of his sixes went a long, long way. As we have spoken about elsewhere on ESPNcricinfo, there’s a unique bat-swing in his game that could be the source of his power.5:27

‘Otherworldly’ Suryavanshi wows Bishop, Aaron

“If you look at the way his backlift is, it starts here [near the back ear] and then it goes almost like a whip. So he gets a little extra whip into his shots, because it’s not like a conventional up-and-down kind of backlift,” Aaron said. “It will be really cool to see one of those trackers which we have which track the backlift; it’s a very different backlift and I think that’s what makes his unique and he gets so much power into the shot with that effort for somebody who is that young.”Visualise what Aaron said, or just revisit Suryavanshi’s batting last night, and the name that pops up is that of Yuvraj Singh. It did for Bishop for sure. “Pendulum swing. I remember when Yuvraj came to the scene, and with pendulum swing, and you can see the full range in motion. How do you… phew!”

‘This is new territory for Rahul Dravid’

Now comes the question about the future. There are enough cautionary tales in Indian cricket about early success and all that can go wrong thereafter. Being around Rahul Dravid and Rathour can only help, but that’s only for a few months every year.”He’s lucky to be part of Rajasthan Royals and under Rahul Dravid, because Rahul Dravid is one of those cricketers who almost symbolises how to keep it low-key,” Aaron said. “If he can pass those values to him, be like, ‘you know what, this is just the beginning, take it easy, put your head down…”5:13

What’s the best way to handle Suryavanshi?

But, as Bishop pointed out, Suryavanshi’s age makes things just that little bit tricky.”It’s unprecedented, 14 years old. This is new territory. This is new territory for Rahul. This is going to be new territory for the parents,” Bishop said. “The scrutiny on him when he plays the next game, and if he doesn’t score any runs, you know, there are going to be detractors out there.”Brian Lara was always one of the greatest guys I saw [when it comes to] dealing with failure. We played against each other since we were 14-15 years old – he was able to take failure, let it run off his back, and move on to something great. This kid if going to be tested. Rahul is great. He has a great track record. His parents are going to have to be so close to him, and hopefully – I am sure they are great parents – you’ve got to surround this kid with proper people for the next five years to ensure this high that he’s got so early in his career, there isn’t a drop.”This is going to take a special effort from his parents, the BCCI…”

Ollie Robinson half-century leads Durham to victory over Derbyshire Falcons

Robinson’s T20 best helped his side amid impressive bowling from Allah Ghazanfar Fynn Hudson-Prentice

ECB Reporters Network supported by Rothesay11-Jun-2025
Durham win by 16 runsA tremendous half-century from Ollie Robinson led Durham to a 16-run victory over basement boys Derbyshire Falcons in the Vitality Blast.Durham had a nightmare start when they lost an early wicket, but Robinson’s fluent 70, a T20 best for him, helped his side to 168 for 6 amid some impressive bowling from Allah Ghazanfar (2 for 18) and Fynn Hudson-Prentice (2 for 25).Caleb Jewell (33 off 22) made early inroads into the Durham total with a display of controlled aggression, but a two-wicket over from Nathan Sowter (2 for 30) swung momentum back in Durham’s favour.Bar some resistance from Wayne Madsen (37 off 31), the Derbyshire chase didn’t get going after that and Ben Raine (3 for 21) mopped up the tail to bowl the Falcons out for 152.Durham were put in to bat by Derbyshire and it was the visitors who had a dream start with Ghazanfar bowling Alex Lees for 1.Derbyshire then cranked up the pressure further, with Graham Clark falling for 18 as he pulled a Hudson-Prentice delivery straight into the hands of Ross Whiteley on the boundary.Colin Ackermann and Robinson steadied the ship, with Robinson finding the boundary when he reverse swept an Alex Thomson ball for four and he produced the same shot two balls later.Robinson continued to motor as he hit Samit Patel for back-to-back boundaries and he then got his fifty from 32 balls, as he slammed a ball from the Falcons skipper through the offside for four.Ackermann was very much the foil to Robinson’s aggression, but the Netherlands international struggled to get going and he went for 33 as he tried to heave a Martin Andersson ball over the ropes, but Hudson-Prentice had other ideas and produced an excellent grab on the boundary.Wickets then came like buses for Derbyshire as the impressive Ghazanfar picked up Robinson, getting him lbw.Jimmy Neesham looked to kick on but he fell to Hudson-Prentice for 8, however a late flurry from Somerset loanee Kasey Aldridge helped the hosts to 168 for 6.Derbyshire’s chase of 169 got off to a decent start, with Aneurin Donald finding the boundary three times in Callum Parkinson’s first over.Jewell then backed that up with a tremendous shot for six over the fine leg boundary off the bowling of Zak Foulkes, but the New Zealand international bounced back to get Donald for 15 after he hit one straight to Aldridge at cover.Durham got their second soon after with Neesham, who was playing his 300th T20, getting Andersson for two as he chipped one straight to Aldridge at mid-on.Jewell kept on going as he carved an Aldridge ball for six and he guided his side past 50 in the powerplay, but he didn’t last much longer as the reliable Sowter forced the Australian into chopping on for 33.Sowter struck again in the same over as he got Samit Patel LBW for two and Parkinson followed that up as he made a mess of the stumps to remove Brooke Guest for 4.Madsen broke the shackles and swept Sowter for six, he then followed that with a reverse sweep for four two balls later.Derbyshire’s revival was halted by Raine who bowled Whiteley for 13, but Hudson-Prentice hit Foulkes for three consecutive fours.Madsen’s knock of 37 came to an end with Parkinson getting his second of the night and Neesham followed that up by removing Hudson-Prentice for 18.Raine then cleaned up the tail with two wickets in the final over to hand Durham their second win of the campaign.

Xavi Simons, Oriol Busquets & the top 10 teenage stars to watch at Barcelona

As part of the NxGn series, Goal takes a look at the most promising young players waiting in the wings at the Catalan club

    Abel Ruiz

As an 18-year-old striker who has represented Spain at U-17 and U-19 level, there are high hopes that Abel Ruiz will go on to become first-choice centre-forward for La Roja. A skillful player with good technique, he was captain of the side that won the European Championship at U-17 level a few months ago and is currently one of the brightest talents at Barca B.

  • Youtube

    Oriol Busquets

He may be no relation to Sergio, but the two players definitely share similar characteristics. Like the older Busquets, Oriol is a central midfielder who is tall and known for his great tactical understanding of the game. The 19-year-old currently plays at Barca B but made his debut for the first team in the Copa del Rey against Murcia earlier this season.

  • Twitter

    Alex Collado

Alex Collado is already Barca B's best midfielder, even though he will only turn 19 next month. He has not featured yet for the first team but is highly thought of by coaching staff at the Catalan club. Good with the ball at his feet and technically adept, he is known for his ability to carry the ball forward from midfield.

  • Mateu Morey

A centre-back similar to Gerard Pique, Mateu Morey is taller than the Barca defender and very good at bringing the ball out from the back. Born in 2000, he is still with the youth team after turning down several offers from elsewhere last summer – including one from Bayern Munich. He should have a bright future at Barca.

    Musa Barrow (Atalanta)

In recent years, no club has proven itself more adept at producing and nurturing young talent than Atalanta, and the Bergamo-based outfit look to have unearthed another gem in Musa Barrow.

The Gambian striker only made his Serie A debut in January but impressed so much during the second half of the season – in which he scored three goals in 14 appearances – that Juventus began to monitor the 19-year-old closely.

They may well come to regret not making a bid for Barrow, who looks poised to make an even bigger splash this season, having already kicked off his campaign by racking up four goals (including a hat-trick against FK Sarajevo) and two assists in three Europa League qualifiers.

    Josip Brekalo (Wolfsburg)

Big things have been expected of Josip Brekalo ever since he joined Wolfsburg from Dinamo Zagreb as an 18-year-old in 2016 for €6 million.

The Croatia Under-21 international has taken his time to settle in Germany, spending some time with the Wolves' second team before being sent out on loan to Stuttgart.

However, Brekalo is now back at the Volkswagen Arena and, with his natural pace (he used to be an 800-metre runner) and scintillating dribbling skills, looks poised to finally make his mark on the Wolfsburg first team.

  • Andrea Favilli (Genoa)

Andrea Favilli made the most of the fact that Juventus had to do without a number of star players for their pre-season programme, scoring three times in just four outings for the Old Lady.

Bianconeri boss Massimiliano Allegri was hugely impressed by the performances of the 21-year-old striker, who bagged a brace against Bayern Munich, describing the former Ascoli attacker as "a young player of great potential".

However, he will spend the upcoming campaign at Genoa, who have paid Juve €5m to take Favilli on loan for the 2018-19 season, with the option to make the deal permanent next summer for an additional €7m.

The Luigi Ferraris has proved an excellent place for young strikers to hone their skills in the past and it's now expected that Favilli will do likewise this term.

    Phil Foden (Manchester City)

On May 13, the then 17-year-old Phil Foden became the youngest ever recipient of a Premier League winners' medal, after making five appearances during Manchester City's title procession.

The classy and versatile midfielder is now set to play an even bigger role in his club's bid to hold on to their crown. As coach Pep Guardiola enthused, "He was ready [for the first team] last year but now he is one year more mature."

His composed performance in the season-opening Community Shield win over Chelsea certainly belied his tender age, with Foden creating the game's opening goal, for Sergio Aguero.

The teenager may not have started against Arsenal last weekend but there is so much more to come from one of the most gifted players England has produced in years.

While FIFA Mobile is more of an abridged, pocket-ready game that has been purposely suited for easy mobile device play, the mobile version of Pro Evolution Soccer 2018 is basically the real deal of the full-sized version of the game – but for phones.

Of course, the mobile version of PES 2018 does come with some necessary alterations, but if you're a gamer looking to recreate the full PES experience on smartphones and tablets, this has got you covered.

PES 2018 has the same 3D visuals and extensive online features as their full-scale game, and though they don't have as many of the licenses teams and players that FIFA have, they do have the likes of David Beckham, Romario and Ian Rush available this season.

    Pocket League Story 2

If you're looking for something more casual and not anything as intense as FIFA Mobile or PES 2018, Pocket League Story 2 is here for you. The heavily pixelated game is football management at its most casual, with low stakes. There are no real-life players or teams in this game, and Kairosoft's version of this football simulation game is relaxed and stripped down, more like a Nintendo arcade game featuring sprites, upbeat music and lots and lots of colours.

As of the game itself, it's an underdog story as you, the player, take a squad of derelicts and turn them into modern-day football successes, building your stadium, facilities, backroom staff and squad along the way. You can also play in multiplayer mode, which lets users face off against rival teams from around the world.

    Top Eleven 2018

Essentially, Top Eleven 2018 is a football management simulation for gamers more interested in a game-oriented experience than the mobile versions of Football Manager.

In Top Eleven, users will be able to decide on every factor of their club, ranging from stadium construction to squad tactics, club transfers and formations. Top Eleven boasts more than 5,000 real-life players throughout the game, so there won't be an issue of a lack of authenticity – providing a comfortable middle-ground between Football Manager and Pocket League Story 2.

Liverpool's new hero! How Nunez outshone Haaland and gave Klopp exactly what he wanted

The Uruguayan stepped off the bench to score in the Community Shield, but should he now start in the Reds' Premier League opener?

One game, one goal, one trophy. One new hero, topless and top-knotted, for Liverpool supporters to worship.

As debuts go, Darwin Nunez could hardly have asked for a better one. When you arrive at a new club in a new league, and for a big transfer fee, the first thing you want to do is start well. The Uruguayan has certainly done that.

“Big for him, and big for us,” was the verdict of Virgil van Dijk after Nunez had emerged from the bench to sink Manchester City in the FA Community Shield at the King Power Stadium on Saturday.

In a little over half an hour in Leicester, the £64-million ($76m) man showed exactly why Liverpool were so keen to sign him from Benfica, why Van Dijk believes him to be the perfect “modern-day striker”, and why Jurgen Klopp is convinced the 23-year-old will make a side which chased the quadruple last season even stronger.

    Outshining Haaland

From the moment he entered the pitch, replacing Roberto Firmino after 58 minutes, Nunez was right in the thick of things.

While Erling Haaland, City’s own big-money striker, operated on the periphery, having fewer touches and attempting fewer passes than any other player on the pitch, Liverpool’s No.27 was involved in everything, desperate to make an impact.

He certainly did that. He finished having taken more shots (four) and received more big chances (three) than any Liverpool player, and having had five touches in the opposition penalty area, only one fewer than Haaland managed in 90 minutes.

He won his side a penalty, his header handled by Ruben Dias, allowing Mohamed Salah to give the Reds a decisive lead. And then, in stoppage-time, came the crowning glory, Nunez stooping to head Andy Robertson’s knock-down past Ederson from close range, and seal his side’s 3-1 win.

    Connecting with his new fans

The celebrations said it all, Nunez removing his shirt in front of the delirious Liverpudlians. How he loved it, and how they loved it.

They had come to see him as much as anyone, no question about that. They chanted his name as he warmed up in the first half, and again as he was summoned from the bench in the second. After his goal, they unfurled a Uruguay flag in the stands. Not since the days of Luis Suarez have we seen that.

Suarez, too, made an instant impact on Merseyside of course, and if Nunez can follow in his countryman’s footsteps, then Reds fans are in for one hell of a ride.

For now, though, they can simply enjoy the moment. A new hero is in town at Anfield.

    'Don't read the press!'

It is clear that some of the criticism which, ridiculously, greeted Nunez’s performances in pre-season, has been heard and felt, and not just by the man himself.

Here, for example, we heard Andy Robertson, in a live pitchside interview, mention “some of the rubbish said about him recently”, and in his post-match press conference, Jurgen Klopp again referred to the conversations around the new-boy’s form as “a joke.”

In the mixed zone, meanwhile, Virgil van Dijk offered some sound advice to his new team-mate.

“He has to not look at what all you guys say about him after a game!” the Dutchman told a gaggle of assembled reporters. “He has to just focus on himself, on the team, improve, get settled in as quickly as possible.

“The only way to do that is to learn from training, learning from the games you play, and don’t look at what others have to say about you and your performances. That, for me, is the key to success. You can get distracted by all that other stuff.”

    'The modern-day striker'

Of course this is only one game, and not even, technically at least, a competitive one either. Bigger challenges await Nunez, and Liverpool, and while there will be plenty who revel in his joy and Haaland’s misfortune, drawing conclusions at this point is as silly as it was after Nunez’s pre-season bow.

Van Dijk has faced both strikers, and so is well-placed to talk about their skills and potential. And he has no doubt that both Nunez and Haaland will shine in the Premier League.

“You see he is direct, he makes good runs in behind, he’s quick, he’s strong,” he said of Nunez. “I said it before, I think he’s a modern-day striker.

“Haaland is the same. They have similar attributes, and they are difficult to play against.

“He [Haaland] obviously has a lot of qualities that can make life difficult for defenders. He will make defenders' lives in England horrible! He’s so direct. He has everything; he can head the ball, he’s quick.

“There is pressure on players who are coming in with a big price tag, but what can you do? You come in to perform, and the club pays a transfer fee for you. You just have to work, and in his case try to score as many goals as possible. That’s the same for Darwin in our case.”
