Everton eyeing £25m Bertrand Traore swoop

[ad_pod ]

Everton are reportedly set to pursue Bertrand Traore, but the Lyon winger has got Theo Walcott 2.0 written all over him.

What’s the story?

Well, according to Football Insider, director of football Marcel Brands wants to sign Traore once the Toffees have signed Andre Gomes.

The outlet reported last week that the club is close to wrapping up a deal for Gomes, and claim Brands will then turn his attentions to Traore.

According to Monday’s report, Brands is plotting a £25m bid. The youngster is valued at £13.5m by Transfermarkt.

Don’t do it Marcel!

A 23 year-old winger capable of playing as a striker, Traore scored 11 goals and added five assists in all competitions last season.

The Burkina Faso international possesses devastating pace and fantastic one-on-one dribbling ability, completing 1.5 dribbles per game in Ligue 1.

However, he is also dispossessed 1.1 times per game and takes 1.9 unsuccessful touches per game. To put that in perspective, Romelu Lukaku averaged 1.6 unsuccessful touches per game in the Premier League last season.

Traore also struggles for end product in higher level games, producing consistently for both Ajax and Lyon in domestic competitions but struggling in Europe with just nine goals in 34 matches.

So, a ridiculously fast young winger who doesn’t really know his best position, is clumsy on the ball and wasteful on the big stage, remind you of anyone?

The last thing Everton need is another big-money attacking signing that struggles to make any impact, and Traore has got Walcott written all over him. Steer clear of this one Marcel.

Panini Tabloid Sticker Pack – Aaron Cikaya picks up Gonzalo Higuain

Gonzalo Higuain joined Chelsea in January on loan from AC Milan, but struggled to make an impact as the Argentine looked short of the sharpness needed to thrive in the Premier League – managing only five goals in the top flight.

He failed to find the net against the top sides and three of his five league goals came against Fulham and Huddersfield.

Aaron Cikaya, who can be seen in the video above filling out his Panini Tabloid, says that Higuain was “one of the flops of the season”.

Potential addition of Bielik could be bad for Field’s development

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

According to a report from The Telegraph, West Brom are one of a number of clubs showing an interest in Arsenal’s Krystian Bielik.

What’s the word?

Albion have been rather quiet in the transfer window so far with more players leaving the Hawthorns than have arrived.

The club completed good work in bringing Croatian Filip Krovinovic to the club on loan, but they have now lost Craig Dawson, Jay Rodriguez and Louie Barry.

Talented 16-year-old Morgan Rogers could also be on his way out, too.

However, they’re now targeting a Premier League midfielder as Bielik has attracted the attention of various Championship clubs.

The Telegraph report that the Baggies are in contention but so are Derby, Middlesbrough and Brentford.

The 21-year-old spent last season on loan at Charlton but Arsenal are hopeful he’ll sign a new deal. If he doesn’t though, they could be willing to let him leave permanently.

Field in jeopardy

The versatile Pole was one of the crucial cogs of the Charlton side that were promoted from League One last term, making 31 appearances as he scored three and also assisted two goals.

Bielik played in central defence at times but it was in holding midfielder where he played most of the season.

And with that in mind, his potential arrival could put Sam Field’s development in jeopardy.

The Albion academy graduate struggled for minutes last term, finding himself behind the likes of Jake Livermore and Gareth Barry in the pecking order.

He played 12 times in the Championship, four of which were starts. The 21-year-old looked impressive when he did play, scoring against Bolton whilst making 1.8 tackles per game over the matches he featured in.

Watch fans explain why the Football League is better than the Premier League in the video below…

Rather harshly, he regularly found himself left out of the side and rarely got a chance under Jimmy Shan, playing just twice.

A fresh start under Slaven Bilic could be exactly what he needs, but if Albion bring in another defensive midfielder he is unlikely to play a large role again.

Bielik has the potential to be a shrewd piece of business for West Brom, but they have to be wary of potentially upsetting one of their rising talents.

Rangers fans are excited to see Scott Arfield back in training

[ad_pod ]

Scott Arfield has returned to Rangers training and fans are very optimistic about his upcoming campaign.

Arfield had been away with Canada at the Gold Cup before returning to Steven Gerrard’s side. They got to the quarter-finals, but were beaten 3-2 by Haiti, despite going two goals up.

The 30-year-old now returns to Ibrox some way behind his teammates and Gerrard is aware of this. The Rangers boss has said Arfield is: “Only probably on day five or six of pre-season, so he is one we will integrate a little bit slower because we want to be careful with Scott.

“It’s important the fans understand that Scott is three weeks behind the team.”

Arfield joins the Gers in between the two legs of their first qualifying round for the Europa League. Gerrard’s men recorded an emphatic 4-0 win over St. Joseph’s last week and will look to ease through the second leg tonight.

He also spoke about his excitement for the season on his return, telling Rangers TV: “What an unbelievable opportunity for anyone playing for Glasgow Rangers at this time, you need to enjoy this experience because we’re all ready to go at it.”

Fans are loving his return and attitude, and plenty took to Twitter to welcome their midfielder back to the club…

Leeds United making a mistake targeting James Chester to replace Pontus Jansson

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In Numbers series, which takes a statistical look at performances, season-long form and reported transfer targets…

According to The Mirror, via The Daily Star, Leeds United are lining up a £7.5m move for Aston Villa centre-back James Chester as they look to replace Pontus Jansson following his exit earlier this month, but stats suggest they would be making a big mistake.

Despite being a key player for the Whites in recent seasons, the Sweden international completed a surprise move to their Championship rivals at the beginning of July, for a fee that was reported to only be worth an initial £4m.

It has left manager Marcelo Bielsa with something of a lack of options at the heart of his defence – they didn’t have a great deal of depth even with Jansson last term – with Gaetano Berardi and Liam Cooper the only senior options.

Ben White has arrived on loan from Brighton and Hove Albion and could have a part to play, but the recent link to Chester suggests that the Argentine boss may want a more experienced head in his backline.

The 30-year-old would certainly be that seeing as he has made 231 appearances at this level, as well as winning 35 caps for his country, Wales.

Watch fans explain why the Football League is better than the Premier League in the video below…

However, a comparison of how he and Jansson performed in the division in 2018/19 suggest that the Yorkshire outfit would be getting a downgrade on a player who was hugely popular among the Elland Road faithful.

The Welshman did have his fair share of injury issues last term, missing the final three months of the campaign with a knee issue, but was a regular in the starting XI prior to that.

While he did have an impressive pass completion rate of 87%, according to WhoScored, from his 28 Championship outings, which suggests he would be a ball-playing centre-back Bielsa likes, some of his other defensive contributions compared to Jansson are slightly more worrying.

He made far few tackles and interceptions than the Swede, while he wasn’t as strong in the air either – not surprising given his 5 foot 10 frame, but a concern in a division where certain teams aren’t afraid to go direct.

The 30-year-old did give away fewer fouls on average per match, but Leeds would surely want an upgrade on Jansson if they are to shell out £7.5m for a player who is two years his senior.

Chester just doesn’t fit the bill in that regard looking at his numbers in 2018/19, and Bielsa and Victor Orta would be better off looking elsewhere for what could prove to be their most important addition of the summer window.

West Brom fans react to Ahmed Hegazi’s latest injury update

[ad_pod ]

West Brom will begin the new Championship season without one of their most influential defenders as Ahmed Hegazi successfully underwent surgery to repair a long-term ankle problem, news which has left many at the Hawthorns feeling rather bittersweet.

The 28-year-old had been nursing the injury since the end of last season and fought through the pain to feature for his national side, Egypt, at this summer’s Africa Cup of Nations.

Despite the issue being manageable, Hegazi opted for surgery after speaking to the club’s medical staff upon returning to England this week. With the season just a fraction over a week away, the chances that the centre-back features is rather unlikely.

As a result, many of the Baggies support took to Twitter to share their thoughts. One stated that it will be a massive loss but it’s probably right the issue is sorted now, rather than deeper into the season. This was echoed by another fan who said it was good news in the long run.

Hegazi made 43 appearances last season as the club were defeated in the play-offs by eventual winners and West Midlands rivals Aston Villa.

The Egypt international originally joined the club on loan during their Premier League relegation season but the club exercised an option to sign him permanently at the very first opportunity.

One fan said Hegazi would be like a new signing upon his return to the first-team whilst another supporter said he was looking forward to him being a rock at the back again.

West Brom fans adore Romaine Sawyers video

[ad_pod ]

West Bromwich Albion recently confirmed the signing of Romaine Sawyers from Brentford.

Sawyers came through the youth system at the Hawthorns but left on a permanent deal in 2013 without making a first-team appearance for the club.

The 27-year-old has now secured a return to the Baggies, though, having enjoyed a strong 2018-19 campaign for Brentford.

On Wednesday afternoon, West Brom’s official Twitter account posted a video of the midfielder discussing his return to the club.

And Sawyers said that he cannot wait to finally turn out for the Baggies.

As expected, the video brought a strong response from the West Brom fans on social media, with many lavishing praise on the recent arrival.

Sawyers enjoyed three strong campaigns with Brentford before sealing a return to the Hawthorns and his journey could officially start against Nottingham Forest in the Championship this weekend.

Rangers fans react as Brandon Barker nears Ibrox switch

[ad_pod ]

Manchester City winger Brandon Barker looks set to make a permanent move to Rangers according to Herald Times and Sport, and the fans have been quick to have their say on the report.

Barker will leave the Premier League champions on a free transfer to link up with Steven Gerrard’s side this summer, per the report. The former Hibs loanee is on his way to Glasgow as he gets closer to a return to Scottish football.

The wide-man was most recently plying his trade in the English second tier under former Hamilton boss Alex Neil while on loan at Preston North End. Barker struggled for game time at Deepdale and only scored twice – both goals arriving in the EFL Cup – in his 20 appearances for the Championship side.

The Gers fans aren’t pleased with his potential signing, knowing his patchy record during his short career. Some supporters aren’t pleased that their club are chasing a player who didn’t set the world alight at Hibs.

Others think Barker’s addition to the current crop makes for a poor set of wide options at Ibrox this season.

Here’s what the fans have had to say on Twitter…

Loan exit for Philippe Coutinho would be ideal for Barcelona

[ad_pod ]

As we approach the beginning of La Liga this Friday with the curtain-raiser between Barcelona and Atheltic Bilbao, one player is looking increasingly unlikely to feature in the squad.

Philippe Coutinho’s Barcelona career, is slowly but surely running its course and a departure from the club now looks likely. Of course, that deal is closely connected to the reported return of Neymar to Barcelona, which would see one Brazilian arriving at the Camp Nou with his fellow compatriot moving in the opposite direction.

But among all those stories putting Coutinho in Paris Saint-Germain colours, more recently a piece of news broke out claiming that Germany could in fact be Coutinho’s destination. Of course, it would seem no Bundesliga club can actually afford the little magician bar one single club – Bayern Munich. And the Bavarians are indeed interested but are looking at the prospect of a loan deal rather than a permanent one.

Financially speaking, and this is especially true for players of such high value as Coutinho, a loan would, at first glance at least, be the more sensible option.

Upon further inspection, however, it hardly makes sense for the buyer, in our case – Bayern Munich. But let’s start with why Barcelona would profit from it immensely.

This part might seem the more obvious one but it has to be said as well. Coutinho’s form at the club has been questionable ever since he arrived at the club.

For the majority of his time with the La Liga giants he’s been utilised as a left-winger, a position he is neither an expert in nor is he at his most exhilarating in. Of course, a lot of it depends on the system the club uses but, in general, he is more comfortable as a number ten with the freedom to roam the edge of the box.

With Lionel Messi in the team, however, it started to become painfully obvious Coutinho would just step on the Argentine’s toes while doing his signature cutting inside and roaming. For that reason, he was chained to the left flank and forever underutilised as a player. But I digress. The point is that Barcelona now want to offload him and either recoup some of the money, free up an additional spot in the squad, relieve some of that wage bill or finally, avoid further payments to Liverpool.

And this last one is the one people seem to forget. When the Brazilian arrived from Anfield, the Merseyside team made sure to put various clauses in his contract so that they would get as much money for their talisman as possible. Most of these were related to Coutinho’s appearances, contribution to the team and trophies won. With Coutinho out of the club, none of these variables would be met, at least not now that the club is so desperately trying to recoup as much money for other, more costly, deals they’re working on.

But there’s also the question of the 27-year-old’s form. If he goes to Bayern, or any other club for that matter, and returns to his brilliant best, Barcelona would be getting a player reborn come next season. It’s an ideal situation. His value would rise and the Catalans would end up with more money or, perhaps, a better player to utilise for their own benefit.

For those reasons, regardless of the loan working out or not, it’s a win-win scenario for them.

Then we come to the other side of the coin, which is the buyer’s point of view. For the sake of the argument, let’s divide the possible outcome in purely black and white scenarios: either the loan works out perfectly, meaning the player performed extremely well or the opposite, with Coutinho failing at his new club too.

In the first case scenario, Bayern (or someone else) get a brilliant player for a year and he helps them immensely. But come the end of the season, they have to send him back and since he performed so well, they will have to pay a premium for his services.

Effectively, a series of great performances would play right into Barcelona’s hands. Not only would the Catalans get back a reinvigorated player, as we’ve already touched upon, but they would also be in a better bargaining position if the potential suitor was keen to make the deal permanent.

The scenario in which Coutinho doesn’t do well is clearly also bad for the buying club. They’re paying the wages of a really expensive player throughout the year and his poor performances would put a permanent deal out of the question.

From this standpoint, it would be easy to conclude that loan deals, in general, don’t make much sense. For big clubs, they often don’t. The only way of actually bypassing this “trap” is by inserting clauses that give the buyer an option of a fixed price upon the end of the loan.

That way, regardless of the performance of the loanee, you’re still paying the same price and doing so only if you deem it worth your money. And seeing how Coutinho’s form has dropped, a fairly decent price could, in theory, be negotiated.

The last thing Bayern or another interested party want to do is give Barcelona any power in this deal. It remains to be seen, however, whether that will be the case or not.

Liverpool’s Jordan Henderson bags quick-fire hat-trick in training ground video

[ad_pod ]

Liverpool are awaiting their next clash in the new 2019/20 Premier League season.

Their third match will pit them against another red-hot team that’s currently sharing the number one spot on the table, Arsenal.

The first two games, however, have been really successful for Jurgen Klopp and the Reds. In their curtain-raiser, they destroyed Norwich City, bagging four goals in the process and then they got away with a 2-1 victory over Southampton in the second fixture.

The Gunners, however, could be their toughest opponent yet and Liverpool are gearing up for the challenge.

Jordan Henderson posted a really impressive

/B1eha56g4cx/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link” data-lasso->Instagram video of their shooting practice from the training ground and it soon got a lot of attention.

Of course, Henderson shared footage of himself banging in the goals during training and among the ones who were most impressed were Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Adrian.

Both players replied with a series of emojis, showing their support for Henderson and seemingly admiring the video.

Team morale seems to be high at the camp and it’s good to see that the Reds have their shooting boots on ahead of such an important clash.
