Baroda take control after Rahul 89

The dismissal of KL Rahul for 89 shifted the balance towards Baroda and the visitors were eyeing the lead against the defending champions

The Report by Alagappan Muthu in Mysore22-Jan-2015

Rahul keen for lower-order runs

KL Rahul is confident Karnataka’s bowling attack on a “very sporting” Mysore pitch can overcome Baroda in the second innings, but the key was reducing the deficit as much as possible.
“It is a bit two-paced and the odd ball is doing something. You’re never set on this wicket. Getting runs is a little hard as some balls are keeping low.
“We have to come back tomorrow and see the first hour off and then look to get those 100 runs. We have the firepower in the bowling to get them all out second time.”
Rahul, during his ninth first-class half-century, appeared quite comfortable even when Baroda were able to counterattack after lunch.
“That period for me is the easier part. When the opposition is coming at you and there is a lot of noise, it makes the game more energetic and alive.
“I love challenges and I was up to it. I focussed hard. There are times in the game when the opposition will be on top but you have to respect that and see that period off.
“On such wickets, you have to play close to the body and play straighter. The more you play, the more you learn. I’ve been in good touch lately and playing straight is something I like to do. That’s the most important thing according to me in a Test game.”

Noise. There was very little from Baroda in the morning and a whole lot from the crowd. The roles reversed after lunch, but the abiding sounds of the second day’s play in Mysore were the thump when the ball met the middle of KL Rahul’s bat and the silence when he was worked out for 89 off 160 balls. The visitors then found holes in the Karnataka middle order and shifted the balance to possibly contemplate a first-innings lead at stumps.”Yeaaahh,” cried Sagar Mangalorkar, five balls into his spell as Robin Uthappa was caught behind while driving away from the body. Baroda’s plan was to make the batsman play as much as possible, but they struggled to control their lengths in the process. Singles were found and leg-side deliveries were flicked to the boundary until Mangalorkar repeated the same cry when he had R Samarth edging to the keeper in the eighth over. Those two incidents aside, it was the fans, swarming a wide arc from third man to cover point and another clump at long-off, who were the most vocal in the first session. They expressed displeasure when Rahul’s flicks were hunted down before the boundary, demanded more sixes from him after he tonked one over the sightscreen and moved, as the score did, to a steady beat.Rahul was able to pick gaps off the front foot or the back foot, and his strength on the drive kept the bowlers from trying to explore for swing. His progress to fifty was almost matter-of-fact, off 96 balls. A similar feeling of inevitability hung around him reaching a century. “He is one of those batsmen who doesn’t get out unless it is to a really good ball,” J Arunkumar, the batting coach, had said.Swapnil Singh, the left-arm spinner, managed one of those in the last over before lunch, but there was no gully to exploit the outside edge off a flick. Baroda persevered and got lucky with three overs for tea. An innocuously wide delivery from Gangandeep Singh snagged the edge while Rahul tried to cut and went to the keeper. And a few of the crowd began to disperse.CM Gautam picked out short cover and Karnataka went from a strong 165 for 3 to a dicey 176 for 5.Baroda’s surge had begun late again. A hot day and the heavy roller had dulled the pitch and they seemed accepting of that. Irfan Pathan had been bowling, and fielding, well within himself. After lunch though, the close-in fielders drummed up appreciable encouragement for the fast bowlers. Irfan fed off the energy to produce a bouncer that trumped Manish Pandey’s hook. It rose above the batsman’s eyeline, had extra zip, cramped him up and broke the most accomplished stand of the day – 80 off 146 balls. The ball began beating bat more – Swapnil’s first ball jumped past the outside edge – and Baroda were keen on making up after Pandey had been let off by Deepak Hooda at third slip off Mangalorkar. Irfan’s second spell read 6-1-8-1.Karnataka needed 18 overs to get the 35 runs to their 200 after Rahul’s wicket and Karun Nair felt the brunt of that pressure. He was dropped by Yusuf Pathan on 20 and 27 and was finally stumped for 38 runs that had taken 177 painstaking minutes.Swapnil, with his high-arm action, was able to add enough revs on the ball to have it turning and bouncing sharply towards the end of the day. He and Gagandeep were the workhorses, bowling 42 overs for 104 runs and three wickets to strangle Karnataka. They ensured Baroda finished on top.

Group IA hundred from Faisal Athar and an unbeaten 44-ball 63 from Shoaib Laghari confirmed a knockout berth for Hyderabad Hawks with a last-over four-wicket win against Quetta Bears. Hyderabad chased down 311 with three balls to spare for their third successive win and finished on top of Group I.The chase was led initially by Zeeshan Gul’s 96 after they were reeling at 26 for 3. Gul and Athar put on 170 runs, and Athar and Laghari combined to score 101 runs together. Athar’s career-best 129 featured 13 fours and a six and no other batsman apart from Gul, Athar and Laghari scored in double digits.Earlier, Quetta Bears were asked to bat and several batsmen got starts but only three scored fifties. Opener Zubair Khan scored a run-a-ball 54 and middle-order batsmen Mirwais Tareen and Rameez Raja scored 51 and 53 respectively. Late contributions from their lower order propelled them to 309 for 9 as offspinner Nasir Awais finished with 4 for 57.Pakistan International Airlines’ six-wicket win over United Bank Limited was not enough to take them to the next round as they finished second with two wins from three matches. After dismissing United Bank for 180, PIA chased down the target with fifties from Sheharyar Ghani (63) and Fahad Iqbal (51*).United Bank could not capitalise on their decision, being reduced to 41 for 3 and 125 for 6 later on. Only No. 4 Saeed Bin Nasir could resist with a 81-ball 71 as left-arm spinner Rafaiy Safdar took 5 for 38, his maiden five-for in List A matches, which helped bowl out United Bank in 41.4 overs. In reply, solid contributions from Ghani, Kamran Sajid (43) and Fahad meant PIA hardly stuttered in their chase to wrap up the win in under 30 overs.Group IIA second List A century from Iftikhar Ahmed built on a six-wicket haul from Zulfiqar Babar as Water and Power Development Authority cruised to a six-wicket win and remained unbeaten in the opening round of the President’s Silver Cup One Day tournament. Habib Bank Limited, despite the loss, progress to the next round along with WAPDA.Put in to bat, Habib Bank got off to a good start with a 93-run opening stand, Imran Farhat made a rapid 70 off 68 balls, which included six fours and two sixes. However, Habib Bank’s middle and lower orders collapsed to Babar’s left-arm spin as he picked up 6 for 57. It was Asad Shafiq’s unbeaten 81 off 84 that helped Habib Bank reach 268.The WAPDA batsmen scored at a brisk rate and reached the target with seven balls to spare. Iftikhar remained unbeaten on 118 off 135 balls, with 10 fours and four sixes while Rafatullah Mohamand’s 55 from 61 and Mohammad Fayyaz 49 off 56 were other notable contributions.Imranullah Aslam cracked a rapid fifty as Bahawalpur Stags held on for a one-wicket victory over Sialkot Stallions. The victory moved them to four points, joined with Habib Bank Limited and Abbottabad Falcons. but Bahwalpur were knocked out as Habib Bank had a better net run rate.In pursuit of 218, Bahawalpur stumbled to 149 for 6 as offspinner Bilal Asif tripped up the middle-order with career-best figures of 4 for 40. Imranullah then took charge with 60 off 49 deliveries and was key in a last-wicket partnership worth 43 runs as Bahawalpur wrapped up the chase with 25 balls to spare.Sialkot ended up winless and would rue their top-order’s failure in the morning. Faisal Khan launched a middle-order revival, making 71 off 86 balls and despite some late impetus from Bilal Asif and Faisal Rasheed Siakot could only reach 217. Afraseem Hussain collected three wickets while Ali Ahmed accounted for two.Group IIIFaisalabad Wolves secured a comfortable 60-run win and progressed into the next round through allrounder Jahandad Khan’s maiden five-for and a collective batting performance. Lahore Eagles, though, exit from the tournament with a solitary win in four matches.Invited to bat, Hamza Zaheer was removed by Ahmed Bashir for 1. However, a 46-run partnership for the second wicket between Iftikhar Ahmed and Ali Shan, and four twenty-plus scores from Nos. 7 to 10 steered Faisalabad to 256. Bashir was the most successful bowler with figures of 3 for 36.In reply, Lahore’s only saving grace was a 77-run association for the second wicket between Tayyab Tahir and Mohammad Waheed as they sunk to 196 all out in 45 overs. Waheed progressed to his third List-A fifty but it had very little impact against Jahanand’s 5 for 46.Pakistan Television missed out on moving to the next round despite their five-wicket win against Sui Southern Gas Corporation, as their net run rate of 0.160 was marginally behind Faisalabad Wolves’ 0.466, with both teams on six points. PTV tried hard to qualify by dismissing SSGC for 216 and then chasing it down in 42 overs, but it wasn’t enough.SSGC were asked to bat and struggled throughout their innings after Mohammad Sami struck early. No. 3 Awais Zia struck a hundred, his fourth in List A, which led them to a respectable score despite a lower-order collapse of losing six wickets for 18 runs. Sami finished with 5 for 35, not letting any other batsman score 20.PTV’s openers could not score any runs but the trio of Hasan Raza (78), Nawaz Ahmed (69) and Zeeshan Mushtaq (41) counterattacked to deliver a comfortable win.

Rugby stand concern at Headingley

Yorkshire will be able to play host to day/night matches this season with the installation of floodlights but a lower-than-capacity crowd may be there to watch.Four 56-metre floodlights, complete with innovative “white rose” head frames, are being installed but the Rugby Stand may have seen its final spectators after concerns were raised over safety.Part of the stand, built in 1932, has been condemned due to corrosion and a structural engineer is due to report on the remainder of the somewhat iconic stand which doubles up to provide accommodation for spectators watching both the cricket and rugby on the opposite side.Rugby fans are unaffected by the corrosion because they use a separate entrance. If the stand was forced to be closed, Headingley’s capacity would reduce to around 14,000, around 3500 lower than present, and lost ticket sales could see the club lose around £130,000.The rugby stand was due to be developed anyway from 2017 and if the cost of repairs is too high, that side of the ground could remain empty until the renovations are completed in 2019.”If it’s going to cost over £100,000, we’re not going to spend that money and throw good money after bad,” Mark Arthur, Yorkshire chief executive, told the . “It’s a blow, but only potentially for two days of the year, which is for the one-day international and the T20 match against Lancashire, which are the only days that we really sell out.”It might be possible to just use the ground floor of the stand, the bottom tier, but when you get people in stands you get what’s known as vibration. It’s not just a question of roping an area off.”If you’ve got a lot of vibration, and suddenly a great lump of concrete comes off the front and bangs on somebody’s head…We simply wouldn’t open the stand unless it was absolutely safe to do so.”

> CONFIRA E SIMULE A TABELA DO CAMPEONATO BRASILEIRO

O MAIOR ‘CLICHÊ’ DO FUTEBOL BRASILEIRO

Quem segura?

Dinesh Karthik completed his 22nd first-class century, while Vijay Shankar narrowly missed out on his third, as Tamil Nadu marched on to a big score, losing only two wickets on the second day. There was little respite for Maharashtra until the 32nd over of the day when Chirag Khurana ended Shankar’s resistance. But he had by then raised 190 runs with Karthik for the fourth wicket. It took Maharashtra 20.5 overs to pick up another wicket, that of Karthik, who had completed his third century of the tournament. He was caught behind for 113 off Shrikant Mundhe, who sent down 40 overs.R Prasanna and B Indrajith made sure they built on the base, and proceeded to add 107 undefeated runs. Despite a marginal improvement from Wednesday, Tamil Nadu’s scoring-rate was still less than 2.5 runs per over. Apart from Mundhe, three other Maharashtra seamers bowled more than 30 overs.Karthik defended the approach, pointing to the “slow” nature of the surface. “It still has a little bit in it for fast bowlers,” he told ESPNcricinfo. “They [Maharashtra] are not bowling on the stumps, but are bowling far outside, and waiting for you to play a bad shot. Yesterday, the wicket was fresh, and it was a bold decision by Abhi [Abhinav Mukund] to bat first, and it was a good decision.”Karthik said the intention was to bat Maharashtra out of the game. “You can say that. We want to keep playing for as long as we can. The format itself is such that there is no hurry at all. I don’t think we have any target in mind.”
