Dale Steyn admitted he said too much in revealing his anger about the Cape Town confrontation with Michael Clarke but was still unhappy about the events of that day

Dale Steyn on his confrontation with Michael Clarke in Cape Town: “It just got heated and a little bit out of hand”•Getty Images
Nine months on, Dale Steyn can’t quite let it go. The South African fast bowler admits he said too much in revealing his anger about the Cape Town confrontation with Michael Clarke, yet still harbours unhappiness about the events of that day and has not spoken with Australia’s captain on the current tour.Like a moth drawn to a flame, Steyn could not help but reveal more of his feelings about the exchange, in which a term was used that “I don’t think I can mention it over the air now”. He did so even as he tried his best to indicate that any differences with Clarke and the Australian team had been blown out of proportion as a result of his intemperate words after the final of the triangular series in Zimbabwe in September.”[That’s] why I said if I see him we’ll have a normal chat between the two of us. It’s got nothing to do about I’ll see you in the car park and we’ll beat the crap out of each other,” Steyn said ahead of Wednesday’s third ODI in Canberra. “It’s got nothing to do with that man, maybe I just said too much in Zimbabwe.”The issue got blown out completely, it was like two schoolgirls the way the media got hold of it. I felt like Clarkey had his opportunity to say something at the end of the Cape Town Test and obviously I wasn’t in the press conference there and the next opportunity I got was a couple of months later in Zimbabwe so I said what I felt.”It wouldn’t have been fair if I’d said something straight after, I would have been called a sore loser after losing the series or the match so I just kept my mouth closed until it was my turn to say something. I didn’t want it to start a massive thing. It did, doesn’t matter. He’s not playing now. He’s obviously injured. Hopefully he gets well, he’s a great player and I think there’s enough respect from both of us, we’ve played against each other for long enough now and it’s just kind of got blown out of the water. It’s a bit silly really in all honesty.”For all Steyn’s qualifications, he is not stepping back from the view that Australia’s players have at times overdone their aggressive approach, varying from the liberal use of colourful language to giving opponents a decidedly cold shoulder either on the field or off it.”Aussies are that kind of side they’re always in your face,” he said. “I think of all the sides that play Test cricket in the world, the Aussies are always well known for being in your face kind of cricketers, kind of bullying teams and stuff like that. I don’t play my cricket like that personally.”I may look like that when I’m on the field and everything like that but I am a fast bowler, that’s just what you’ve got to do at the end of the day. I don’t quite agree with the way some of the things are done I think there’s a line. And I try to stay close to that line but never over-stepping it and if I do over-step it, I’ll be the first guy to put my hand up and say I’m sorry and go and do whatever I can to fix that.”Australia have always been that kind of side, so it doesn’t surprise me when they come hard or when somebody you’ve been a team-mate with before doesn’t greet you at breakfast, that’s just the way it is.”Hurtful as it was for Steyn, he conceded that the theatre of Cape Town, when Australia won the match and the series with only a handful of minutes remaining, was the sort of theatre cricket needed. The confrontation began when Steyn defended his teammate Vernon Philander against James Pattinson following the overturning of his dismissal on a decision review. Clarke then intervened.”That’s pretty much where it started right there,” he said. “I think when the game was on the line we had 30 balls to bat to save the Test match. They needed two wickets, it was hot, it was day five. It was everybody wants to see in Test cricket isn’t it. That’s why you go and watch day one of the Test match is always going to be a bit sporty and day five when it boils down to almost the last ball kind of stuff that’s why people pay money to go and fly around the world and watch Test cricket.”It was great theatre, great to watch. But it just got heated and a little bit out of hand. And things got said that probably shouldn’t have been said. One team won, one guy was extremely happy and the other guy didn’t win, and he wasn’t very happy about it, so if that Test match was a draw, who knows what would have been said when we were shaking hands. Would there have been an apology, would someone have said something? At the end of the day it doesn’t matter man.”That’s why we go and watch cricket, it’s great fun, it’s great to see. I don’t expect anything less in this series. It would be a disappointment if Mitch Johnson didn’t abuse Faf, it would be disappointing if I didn’t abuse somebody. And Warner didn’t have a go at someone, why would anyone want to come and watch us play cricket apart from our skills? It’s got to be entertaining and that’s why we play.”Clarke had grown tired of the issue, saying it had sold enough newspapers before game one. But at the end of his press conference, Steyn let slip that the pair had not spoken, and his one attempt to approach Clarke in Perth received an icy response. It is not done with yet.

Branco: Tiago Volpi; Daniel Alves, Bruno Alves, Anderson Martins e Léo; Liziero, Tchê Tchê, Hudson e Vitor Bueno; Antony, Helinho, Everton Felipe e Raniel.
Laranja: Jean; Juanfran, Arboleda, Walce e Reinaldo, Luan, Willian Farias, Igor Gomes, Igor Vinicius e Lucas Fernandes; Matheus Cunha (goleiro), Everton e Calazans.
New Zealand are set to make at least one change to their team as they seek to level the series against Pakistan

James Neesham has struggled against spin•AFP
New Zealand are set to make at least one change to their batting line-up as they seek to level the Test series against Pakistan, but know that it will be a major challenge for whichever XI they send out to overcome the hosts in Sharjah. The draw in Dubai, where on the final day New Zealand had Pakistan nervous before tea, lifted confidence after the comprehensive reversal in the opening Test. However, breaking down the performance there were at least a couple of moments when more ruthlessness could have brought even greater rewards. They had been 226 for 2 in the first innings, but ended up needing their lower-order’s help to scrape past 400. Then they had Pakistan 312 for 9 in their first innings before a last-wicket stand of 81 between Sarfraz Ahmed and Rahat Ali brought the scores almost level. Both in terms of runs and time used up, that was a vital period and the difference between New Zealand having an even stronger chance to force a result on the final day – and it needed Ross Taylor’s impressive hundred to prevent a likely Pakistan victory. In the middle order, Jimmy Neesham, despite being the first New Zealander to score hundreds in his first two Tests, has emerged as the most vulnerable after a lean two Tests where he has struggled against spin. So too, has Corey Anderson but he was more robust in the first Test and his bowling is a notch more threatening than Neesham’s, whose one wicket in the series was a long hop smashed to cover by Younis Khan.”We’ll definitely consider changes,” Mike Hesson, the New Zealand coach, said. “We considered it before this [second] Test and we had some good discussions over the make-up of the side and we’ll continue those.”Luke Ronchi is shaping as the man to push for inclusion, partly due to his recent strong form in ODIs, with scores of 99 and 79 against South Africa, but also as he is a right-hander and that is viewed as a way of being able to counter threat posed by Zulfiqar Babar and Yasir Shah, who have targeted the pads and stumps of the left-handers with deliveries spinning into them. However, one change in batting personnel is unlikely to quell the threat posed by the Pakistan spinners, especially on a surface that is already shorn of any semblance of grass two days out from the match.”In the other two pitches we could see grass, but not here. This looks a bit different. Sharjah traditionally is lower and skiddier and slows up as the game goes on. So I don’t expect this wicket to be any different,” Hesson said. “The warm-up game we had played here had lot more grass on it. We have to play very well to be able to compete in these conditions.”Their bowling attack is likely to be bolstered with the surprise inclusion of Daniel Vettori, who was already with the New Zealand A team in the UAE, taking the spinners’ count to three in the team. Ish Sodhi, the legspinner, has impressed in patches but the Pakistan batsmen have made a conscious effort to attack offspinner Mark Craig whose Test economy rate is over four an over.”Our spinners aren’t used to bowling on conditions where footholes play such a part. Pakistan spinners beat us off the wicket and at home traditionally we try and beat guys in the air,” Hesson said. “When you have footholes to hit, it’s very hard to change the method that you’ve trained your whole life. I thought the way Ish and Mark have adapted over the last couple of Tests is pleasing but they are still striving for consistency of pace as well.”

Sean Abbott is set to return to Sheffield Shield cricket on Tuesday as his captain Moises Henriques called for his name to be “expelled” from the tragedy of Phillip Hughes’ death

Sean Abbott is set to return to Sheffield Shield cricket on Tuesday as his captain Moises Henriques called for his name to be “expelled” from the tragedy of Phillip Hughes’ death. Abbott has been named in a 12-man squad to play for New South Wales in their Shield game against Queensland at the SCG.The next round of Shield games was to start last Friday but due to Wednesday’s funeral for Hughes it was postponed to begin on Tuesday, coinciding with the start of the first Test between Australia and India in Adelaide. The return to the SCG will be an emotional one for the New South Wales side, as that was the venue at which Hughes was struck down by a bouncer nearly a fortnight ago.Abbott, the bowler who sent down that delivery, did not play grade cricket in Sydney at the weekend but Henriques said he was coping well under the circumstances. Henriques said Abbott should be treated like any other player who had lost a friend and been affected by the tragedy.”He’s coping pretty well,” Henriques told the radio programme. “I guess from our point of view as fellow players, we’re trying to expel his name from the tragedy a little bit, because in my opinion I don’t think he’s any more at fault than any other fast bowler who’s bowled a bouncer in his career.”We’re actually trying to remove his name from everything that’s happened, and just treat him as another one of the players. I think that’s how he wants to be treated – another one of the guys who went through the same thing, has lost a friend and lost someone close to them.”It frustrates me when he gets named a lot because it escalates guilt a little bit, as if he should be feeling guilt. I certainly don’t think he should be feeling guilt at all, and I guess that’s why we’d prefer just to call it ‘the bowler’, rather than ‘Sean’.”In a statement, Cricket New South Wales said that players had been given the option of withdrawing from this week’s match should they feel not ready to play. However, aside from those who have now joined the Test squad, all of the New South Wales players who took part in Hughes’ final match have been named in the 12-man squad. Henriques will captain the Blues in his first outing for the state since he injured his calf against Victoria in a one-day game on October 17.Meanwhile, South Australia also chosen a 13-man group to travel to Hobart to take on Tasmania, with Kane Richardson, Daniel Worrall and Adam Zampa having all ruled themselves out as they continue to deal with the loss of Hughes. Kelvin Smith, Cameron Valente, Sam Raphael, Kelvin Smith and Gary Putland have been included.Tom Cooper, who was batting with Hughes when he was struck at the SCG, said he would play in Hobart but had found it difficult to get over the image of Hughes being struck. “I keep replaying it,” Cooper said. “A few of the New South boys have said that as well, they keep replaying it over and over in their minds. That is one of the toughest bits.”Cooper was also Hughes’ house-mate in Adelaide and said that because Hughes was so often touring with the Australia side, his absence at home had not yet sunk in. “It’s a little bit weird because he has always been on tour, it is not un-normal for him to not be around,” Cooper said. “It hasn’t really hit home yet. I’m guessing it’s going to come and go in waves because we’re so used to him being away.”Tasmania have made one notable change for the match against South Australia, with former Test wicketkeeper Tim Paine dropped and Ben Dunk included as gloveman. Paine has had a disappointing start to the Shield campaign with only 88 runs from his six innings, while Dunk’s limited-overs start to the summer earned him a call-up to Australia’s T20 side and last week he showed his red-ball form with 215 in the Futures League.Queensland have added uncapped offspinner Cameron Brimblecombe to their squad for the match against New South Wales, while fast bowler Cameron Gannon is also in the 13-man group as a replacement for Ryan Harris, who is in the Test side. Victoria will play Western Australia in Perth and have added Marcus Stoinis, who has recovered from an ankle injury, and David Hussey to their squad, with Chris Rogers out due to Test duties.New South Wales squad Moises Henriques (capt), Sean Abbott, Doug Bollinger, Ryan Carters, Scott Henry, Nick Larkin, Nic Maddinson, Peter Nevill, Steve O’Keefe, Gurinder Sandhu, Will Somerville, Mitchell Starc.South Australia squad Johan Botha (capt), Tom Cooper, Mark Cosgrove, Callum Ferguson, Travis Head, Trent Lawford, Tim Ludeman, Joe Mennie, Gary Putland, Sam Raphael, Chadd Sayers, Kelvin Smith, Cameron Valente.Tasmania squad George Bailey (capt), Alex Doolan, Jackson Bird, Ed Cowan, Xavier Doherty, Ben Dunk, James Faulkner, Andrew Fekete, Ben Hilfenhaus, Sam Rainbird, Jordan Silk, Jon Wells.Queensland squad James Hopes (capt), Cameron Boyce, Cameron Brimblecombe, Joe Burns, Ben Cutting, Luke Feldman, Peter Forrest, Cameron Gannon, Peter George, Chris Hartley, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Reardon.Victoria squad Matthew Wade (capt), Fawad Ahmed, Scott Boland, Daniel Christian, Aaron Finch, Peter Handscomb, John Hastings, David Hussey, Glenn Maxwell, Rob Quiney, Marcus Stoinis, Chris Tremain, Cameron White.
