Mike Hesson, who took over as Kenya’s coach in July, has told the Otago Times that he arrived to find players in dispute with the board
ESPNcricinfo staff29-Nov-2011Mike Hesson, who took over as Kenya’s coach in July, has told the Otago Times that he arrived to find players in dispute with the board and that his first role was to act as a mediator between the two factions.Hesson quit after six years as coach of Otago and moved his family to Nairobi to take up the two-year contract. He was in no doubt as to the challenge ahead of him after Kenya’s dismal performance at the World Cup.”We had eight players on strike seeking better pay and work conditions, including most of our fast bowlers,” he said. “After a brief settling-in period I ended up acting as a go-between for the board and players. It meant trying to master Swahili fairly fast. I understand more than I speak but I’m getting the hang of it.”Basically the players weren’t getting the greatest of advice. There are lots of issues here based on tribal loyalty. You respect what your elders tell you out of blind faith.”Hesson said the situation had now been resolved and that the 18 fully-contracted players “who live well by African standards; they’re probably in the top half of earners in the country”.He had already seen what he has to work with on matches with Namibia and Zimbabwe and is now focussing on next year’s World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka with two spots up for grabs for Associates.

AB de Villiers fell one short of his 13th Test century but still believes South Africa already have enough runs to put the match beyond Sri Lanka

AB de Villiers fell one short of his 13th Test century but still believes South Africa already have enough runs to put the match beyond Sri Lanka. On a pitch that has offered something to the bowlers throughout, South Africa currently lead by 209 runs with a wicket in hand.de Villiers was dismissed for 99 after lashing at a wide ball and being caught at point by Sri Lanka’s substitute fielder Dimuth Karunaratne. He had a brief consultation with the umpire on the field and then walked off. Replays showed that there may have been some doubt about whether the ball had carried, but de Villiers chose not to review the decision.”I was hoping that the umpires would go upstairs,” he said. “But, like Jacques Kallis always does, I wanted to ask the fielder. Rod [Tucker] asked me if I wanted to go upstairs and I said, ‘No, let’s ask the fielder.’ We did ask him and he said he caught it. I haven’t seen the highlights or the replay but it’s history now. I still back the fielder, if he said he caught it, that’s it.”Sri Lanka’s batting coach Marvan Atapattu was less philosophical about de Villiers’ decision. “That’s a nice gesture but I’m not quite sure. I asked the fielder about it and he said he was pretty sure it was a clean catch. I myself, looking from inside wasn’t very sure whether he caught it,” Atapattu said, confessing that we would probably have had it reviewed. “After all, he was on 99. Personally, I wouldn’t have [relied on the fielder], to be very honest.”The one run that separates de Villiers from a milestone may not make too much difference, because the South African No.4 believes his team has scored enough runs to only bat once. Their lead grew steadily as the day wore on and de Villiers said the team is hoping to extend it even further tomorrow morning. “We don’t want to go and bat again, which shouldn’t happen if we bowl really well,” he said. “I would like us to get a big lead. There’s more than enough time left in the game.”South Africa’s last wicket pair of Mark Boucher and Imran Tahir has already put on 39 runs, with Tahir striking some massive blows at the end of the day. “Immi (Tahir) surprised all of us,” de Villiers admitted. “We all know he is an attacking player but to actually hit the ball in the middle of the bat was quite surprising.”He had more serious words for Boucher’s performance, which came with the wicketkeeper under pressure to justify prolonging his career. “He has been under a bit of pressure and to come through like that on a difficult wicket in a very difficult situation and to wag with the tail was unbelievable.”Boucher started slowly but combined with de Villiers for a seventh-wicket stand of 33 and Vernon Philander for 41 for the eighth-wicket, something that de Villiers says was the hallmark of South Africa’s innings. “The highlight for me was the partnerships,” he said. “It’s easy for me to say I played a big knock and had a big influence on the game, which I did, but other boys also did pretty well.”Sri Lanka, on the other hand, failed to build on the two half-century partnerships they had and Atapattu wants to see a more convincing showing by them in the second innings. “There is no rocket science in batting on wickets like this,” he said. “It’s just that we didn’t do it consistently. We need to be positive. The wicket is not the best batting wicket that you get. I would have thought that it will get better as the game progresses but I didn’t see anything significantly better than yesterday, so there can’t be a drastic change tomorrow.”de Villiers agreed that it would remain tricky for the batsmen and said South Africa’s bowlers will again relish the prospect of producing on a seamer-friendly surface. “I can’t wait to see our bowlers on this wicket. If Angelo Matthews can get it to bounce and hit my gloves, I can wait to see Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel and Vernon Philander on this track,” he said. “If we do the basics well, there’s more than enough to work with.”Despite the assistance of the pitch, de Villiers said South Africa will be wary of players like Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene who “can score double-hundreds”. And Atapattu is looking forward to those very men to step up after a year of disappointments in the Test arena.”There have been more than a couple of batting failures in the last six months, but there are no excuses,” he said. “These are the most experienced six batsmen that we have to represent Sri Lanka in Test match cricket, they have put runs on the board before and it’s their responsibility to put runs on the board over and over again, for as long as they play for Sri Lanka.”

Mohsin Khan, the Pakistan interim coach, has said the three-day win over England was a major “boost to the nation” after a period marred by controversy

Test rankings
Saeed Ajmal’s 10-wicket match haul has propelled him to the third place in the ICC Test bowling rankings. He jumped nine places and displaced Graeme Swann to take the No.3 spot, behind Dale Steyn and James Anderson. Ajmal’s spin-bowling partner Abdur Rehman, who picked up four wickets in the game, jumped five spots and is now in 14th place.
Mohsin Khan, the Pakistan interim coach, has said the three-day win over England was a major “boost to the nation” after a period marred by controversy, chiefly the spot-fixing scandal.”There have been well documented and unwanted activities involving former Pakistani cricketers a couple of years ago which spoilt the name of Pakistan cricket and gave the nation of Pakistan a bad name,” Mohsin told . “Our aim was to turn that around, and to provide a boost to the nation and fans of Pakistan cricket, and to show the world that there is more to Pakistan cricket than just negatives. Cricket is not just a game in Pakistan; it’s a way of life, it’s a passion and the people adore cricket in Pakistan. So for that reason I feel the win today was a gift for the people of Pakistan.”The Pakistan Cricket Board is working tirelessly to improve the image of Pakistan cricket and to bring normality back to Pakistan cricket. Likewise this group of players can play an important role in improving the image of Pakistan cricket, by playing tough cricket and winning consistently and therefore showing the world that Pakistani cricketers are among the best in the world and that Pakistan is amongst the best teams in the world.”Pakistan won by 10 wickets, skittling England out for 192 and 160. They picked up five wickets in the first session of the first day, and Mohsin said that played a decisive role. “We were pleased when England decided to bat first as we knew there would be something in the pitch for our bowlers, particularly in the first hour due to the moisture. Our plan was to create early pressure in the first session and to take full advantage of the conditions, and that worked to our satisfaction. We had an early grip on the game and I told the boys to not let that advantage go and to maintain that pressure and not ease up at all. The first session was ultimately pivotal in the outcome of the match.”England had few answers against offspinner Saeed Ajmal, who was Man of the Match for bagging 10 wickets. Mohsin dismissed questions raised in some quarters about his action. “I’m not worried about the comments regarding Ajmal’s action and neither is Saeed. You do find some people in the media who try to create a few unwanted things which should be kept away from cricket, but then again when we came to the UAE there were questions from some of the media directed to Misbah and myself about the issues in 2010 in England.”Our response was simple and was that we are just here to play good positive cricket and nothing more than that.”The second Test will take place at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi on January 25. “Shortly after the match finished today we had a team meeting where we all discussed the importance of not being complacent and maintaining our focus for the second Test match in Abu Dhabi,” Mohsin said.

The crowd in Chittagong were treated to two tense games, but had to go home disappointed as their home team, Chittagong Kings, fell short by nine runs in a low-scoring thriller against Duronto Rajshahi. Chittagong Kings got off to a good start chasing 127, but Rajshahi scripted a remarkable turnaround, thanks to the left-arm spinner Saqlain Sajib, who took 3 for 22.On a pitch taking turn, the Chittagong openers added 40 before Jahurul Islam was run-out. It was the opening which transformed Rajshahi’s fortunes as Sajib took two in two balls. Jason Roy was bowled, before Ziaur Rahman was out edging to Junaid Siddique at slip. He added Nasir Jamshed to his tally and suddenly, Chittagong were feeling the heat. The captain Mahmudullah and Shamsur Rahman led a recovery stand of 34, helped along the way by some ordinary fielding. At 89 for 4, just when the chase had a semblance of control, Mahmudullah fell for 18. There was no looking back from there on as Mohammad Sami struck twice to give Rajshahi the edge. He removed Shamsur top edging a short ball, but was a bit lucky to get Dwayne Bravo lbw, as replays indicated the ball may have missed the leg stump.Farhad Reza was running out of partners and it didn’t help that the required run rate kept climbing. Chittagong failed to find the boundaries and in the end couldn’t get themselves to within a massive hit over the rope to finish things off.Earlier, Chittagong’s Arafat Sunny also found good purchase from the pitch, taking a miserly 3 for 13 off his four overs. The left-arm spinner dismissed the overseas trio of Khalid Latif, Marlon Samuels and Abdul Razzaq. After a scratchy start, Rajshahi were led by their captain Mushfiqur Rahim who scored a workmanlike 24 off 25 balls without any boundaries. In the end, the modest 126 turned out to be a match-winning total.
