Here come the reinforcements

Australia’s limited-overs tour of Bangladesh means most IPL teams will receive valuable reinforcements two matches into the competition

Daniel Brettig14-Apr-2011

Rajasthan Royals’ Shane Watson used the preceding ODI series against Bangladesh to find his range with the bat•Indian Premier League

Australia’s limited-overs tour of Bangladesh deprived the IPL of a handful of its brightest stars at the start of the tournament. However now most franchises will receive valuable reinforcements, two matches into the competition. Some, like Shane Watson, have brought themselves to peak explosiveness during the week in Dhaka. Others, like Cameron White, will hope the change of colours brings a change of fortunes.Shane Watson (Rajasthan Royals): If Rajasthan needed any more reminders of Watson’s value, a record tally of 15 sixes in an ODI duly arrived in boldface type during the Bangladesh series. Having been as much a part of Rajasthan’s development as Shane Warne, Watson enthuses over the IPL as much as any Australia player, and seemed to use the preceding ODI series as a chance to find his range with the bat.Brad Haddin (Kolkata Knight Riders): A debutant in the IPL, Haddin’s recent knack for flashy starts will be useful if he is squeezed into the Kolkata top order. Less attractive are his two low scores against Bangladesh and a wicketkeeping technique that has seldom adapted well to the subcontinent’s low bounce, meaning Haddin has a task ahead of him to provide genuine allrounder value to his franchise.Michael Hussey (Chennai Super Kings): Having been a key player in Chennai’s success in 2010 (both in the IPL and Champions League), Hussey was nonetheless miffed about being forced to stay with his franchise until the conclusion of the Champions League, rather than preparing for a Test series in India. With a pair of handy scores against Bangladesh to his name, Hussey appears in decent touch, and has avoided a relapse of the hamstring tear that almost kept him out of the World Cup.Callum Ferguson (Pune Warriors): Ferguson has visited India numerous times, most recently as the reserve batsman in the Australia World Cup squad. His two most recent innings, in a World Cup warm-up against India and the third limited-overs match against Bangladesh, did not suggest subcontinental comfort however. He will need to find the right mindset for his time in the middle, after countless hours in the nets in between.Cameron White (Deccan Chargers): A six-month struggle with the bat in the Australia ODI side eventually saw White left out of the XI after the first match against Bangladesh. And coach Tim Nielsen’s view that he was not hitting the ball as hard as he should, would not make for pleasant reading at Deccan. However the time constraints of Twenty20 may be White’s best path back to his big-hitting best, removing the mental barrier often created by having balls to spare.Tim Paine (Pune): A neat batsman and tidy gloveman, Paine is among the most technically correct of Australia’s young crop, and showcased his fierce determination during the 2010 Test series in India. He has gradually developed an ability to switch between the power-hitting mode of T20 and the poise required for longer formats, a quality that will aid his performance as much as blond locks push his marketability.Shakib Al Hasan (Kolkata): Shakib bowled tightly against a rampant Australia batting line-up but found momentum less easy to come by with the bat, while juggling the captaincy of a team that looked a little lost after the World Cup. Still ranked the world’s leading limited-overs allrounder – at least until Watson overtook him with his stunning efforts in Dhaka – Shakib’s spin should prove awkward to manoeuvre at Eden Gardens.John Hastings (Kochi): A hat-trick in Australia’s warm-up match at Fatullah was perhaps the highlight of Hastings’ tour of Bangladesh. He was frugal in the ODIs, but without the same success. A modest batting record for Australia does not quite convey the skill and hitting-power contained within his 6’5” frame.Brett Lee (Kolkata): Lee’s best moments on a cricket field in India arrived during the Champions League in 2009, when he guided New South Wales to victory and was named Player of the Tournament. He will hope to be similarly influential with the consistently under-performing Kolkata, needing to mentor a bowling attack that lags behind the franchise’s batting in both experience and accomplishment.James Pattinson (Kolkata): Likened to Peter Siddle, but with a little more swing and subtlety, Pattinson made his international debut in the third match against Bangladesh. He is likely to form a decent pace partnership with Lee, and can prosper if he maintains spotless lengths and lines.

Spirited Kochi make it two in two

Brendon McCullum made a severe dent into the below-par D/L-adjusted target, and handy contributions from Parthiv Patel and Brad Hodge then gave Kochi Tuskers their second win in a row

Brendon McCullum made a severe dent into the below-par D/L-adjusted target set by Chennai Super Kings, and handy contributions from Parthiv Patel and Brad Hodge then gave Kochi Tuskers their second win in a row. It was the impact of the clean hitting from McCullum that shook Chennai up, and Parthiv and Hodge took Kochi home with some smart cricket. It was in compete contrast to how almost every Chennai batsman, bar M Vijay, struggled to find timing on a pitch that seemed to have retained some moisture. The Kochi bowlers used the track well, getting the ball to grip, but it was the ground fielding that stifled Chennai despite the fact the inside edges regularly found the boundary and mis-hits hardly ever reached the deep fielders.McCullum then made batting looked ridiculously easy. Statements aren’t made more emphatically than the way he treated Albie Morkel like a spinner at the start of the chase. He charged straight at Morkel in the first over and deposited him into the sightscreen. In Morkel’s second, he went over cow corner. Disdain was getting defined. Doug Bollinger got a sample too when he did as much as pitch short of a length.Mahela Jayawardene departed after hitting R Ashwin for a four and a six, but nothing was keeping McCullum from hitting balls towards the sightscreen, as Shadab Jakati realised. In the ninth over, Tim Southee also made the mistake of straying into McCullum’s pads, and was hit for two boundaries as Kochi attained a rate of nine an over.In between, Parthiv played a lovely cover-drive for four, but also got one inside-edge to run down for four to give Chennai a taste of their own medicine. McCullum wanted to finish things off fast, but miscued one off R Ashwin to leave the others 46 to get off 39. Parthiv was to make the equation simpler with a slog-swept six off Jakati, but he too mis-hit a pull to leave 26 to get off the last four overs.Hodge and Ravindra Jadeja made sure there no jitters in the home stretch. Chennai’s innings, though, never escaped regular and mild jitters. It rained almost throughout the first nine overs, play was interrupted for more than an hour after that due to a heavy shower, and Chennai remained sluggish throughout. Except for a flowing 28 off 18 from Vijay, none of the Chennai batsmen adjusted well to the pace of the pitch. Even Suresh Raina’s half-century, and credit must go to him for getting that many on such a day, featured as many edges and mis-hits as clean shots.Others had nothing to show for their efforts. Early movement consumed Michael Hussey, Vijay’s first loose shot accounted for his wicket, and desperation at not being able to hit freely took care of S Badrinath. The decisive moment came when MS Dhoni and Raina came together. RP Singh, Hussey’s wicket to his name already, welcomed the India captain with an over full of yorkers and a bouncer, conceding just two; that left Chennai on 109 for 3 after 15. In that spell of play, heave after heave followed, pad after pad was hit, and not even a 14-run final over threatened Kochi.

Estamos vendo a qualidade do trabalho dele.

Dernbach happy to give Sri Lanka a tough time

Jade Dernbach knows he won’t be featuring in England’s Test squad early this season, but was delighted to be able to play a part in giving the Sri Lankans a tough warm-up

Jade Dernbach knows he’s unlikely to be featuring in England’s Test squad early this season, but was delighted to be able to play a part in giving the Sri Lankans a tough warm-up ahead of the series which starts next week in Cardiff. His 5 for 44 helped remove the vistiors for 266 and leave the Lions with the option of enforcing the follow-on in the morning.Having watched the Lions pile up 493 for 8, the Sri Lankan top order then subsided to 97 for 6 before lower-order resistance gave some respectability to their total. However, it will be a concern that the likes of Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara only have one more innings before the Test match and Sri Lanka’s problems against a strong pace attack will have been noted.”Anything we can do to hamper their preparations is amazing,” Dernbach said. “So if we can put them on the back foot leading into that first Test that will be job done for us. The boys came out with a real intensity and it was a great effort to bowl them out in under a day.”Dernbach’s figures were boosted by clean-bowling the final two batsmen with consecutive deliveries, leaving him on a hat-trick in the second innings. The earlier job of dismantling the top order was shared with Graham Onions and Ajmal Shahzad who claimed two apiece. Shahzad is the leading contender to be named in the 12-man Test squad on Sunday in place of the injured Tim Bresnan.Much like Eoin Morgan’s 193 which set up the Lions’ strong position, Dernbach’s success is unlikely to mean very much in the short-term planning of the selectors. He is more likely to come into consideration for the one-day internationals following his late World Cup call-up, but is just keen to keep his name firmly in Geoff Miller’s thinking.”I’m just new on the scene so all I can do is put performances together and keep my name there or thereabouts,” he said. “Things are out of my hands but if I can keep performing other things will take care of themselves.”We’ve got four top-quality seams vying for one position so it’s just nice to put yourself on show and to come out with five wickets was great.”

Scorecard
Rain denied a crowd of 8,000 the chance to see Kevin Pietersen inbatting action as Surrey’s Friends Life t20 clash with Glamorgan was abandonedat the midway stage.Pietersen made his competition debut for Surrey, but the crowd had to settlefor seeing him field as the visitors, captained by Alviro Petersen, reached atotal of 167 for 7.The Glamorgan skipper made 13 before being bowled by Dirk Nannes, who bowledfour tight overs, while Jade Dernbach also impressed with the ball for Surrey ashe took three for 30.Both sides collected one point for the no-result, and the consolation forSurrey and Glamorgan – if not for the spectators – is that they remain firmly incontention for top-four finishes in the South Group.Thunder and lightning greeted the end of Glamorgan’s 20 overs, and the Ovalgroundstaff were soon hauling on covers while torrential rain fell over southLondon. For a while, when the weather temporarily cleared, there was hope that playmight be able to re-start, but when more heavy rain arrived just before 9pm thematch was abandoned.Mark Cosgrove and Jim Allenby, who hit a fine 63 off 44 balls, played the majorinnings for Glamorgan, while David Brown hit out productively towards the end ashe and Allenby added 53 in five overs for the sixth wicket. If Pietersen had not pulled off a fine boundary catch at long-on to dismissCosgrove for a 30-ball 43 in the 11th over, leaping to hold the ball and doingwell not to step over the ropes in the process, Glamorgan’s total would surelyhave been greater. He and Allenby had added 57 in just six overs. As it was, they lost four wickets for 14 runs inside four overs, with Cosgrovethe first to go in that sequence, and momentum was only regained in a 17th overfrom Zander de Bruyn in which Allenby took a leg-side four as he went to hishalf-century and Brown swung a mighty six over long-on.There was another six for Allenby in the next over, with Yasir Arafat blastedover mid-wicket, while Brown went down on one knee and cleverly paddle-sweptDernbach to fine leg for four as he reached an unbeaten 31 from 21 balls.Cosgrove hit four fours and two sixes, both over long-on off Gareth Batty, while Allenby’s fine innings contained three sixes – two in the same over offChris Schofield – and five fours.
