Celtic had transfer nightmare with Elhamed

Celtic have been pretty consistent when it comes to spending money to bring new players to Parkhead throughout previous transfer windows.

However, as happens with a lot of clubs, not just in Scotland but in other leagues across the world, not every deal ends up being a successful one.

One prime example of a less than fruitful transfer from a financial point of view for the Hoops is their 2019 move for defender Hatem Elhamed.

Signed from Israeli club Hapoel Be’er Sheva in a deal worth a reported £1.6m three summers ago, the defender ended up making just 30 appearances for the Hoops across all competitions. In February 2021, Celtic sold the 31-year-old back to his previous club for a fee of £800k, half of what they originally paid for him.

The 2019/20 season saw the Israel international make just 15 appearances then came in the first half of the 2020/21 campaign before his eventual return to his homeland.

His eight Premiership appearances last term saw the defender, who is currently valued at £450k, earn a middle-of-the-road overall performance rating of 6.9/10 from WhoScored. In addition to his underwhelming performances, the former Hoops player was struck with numerous injury issues which resulted in him missing a total of 43 games according to Transfermarkt.

Speaking about Elhamed’s exit from the club, former Celtic boss Neil Lennon said: He said: “He was going through a really difficult time, his wife and son were back in Israel and he was here on his own. He was really struggling with life away from the training ground and stadium.”

Taking all this into account, it’s safe to say that Elhamed’s transfer to Celtic just didn’t work out and was not a good move for anyone apart from Hapoel Be’er Sheva, who ended up banking quite a lot of money for him.

From Celtic’s point of view, it can be said that a grand total of £2.7m from his original transfer fee and £14k-per-week wages ended up going down the drain.

Leeds: Victor Orta may look to sign Cucho

Leeds United may look at a summer move for Watford forward Cucho Hernandez, according to Leeds Live.

The Lowdown: Orta and Marsch’s meeting

Victor Orta and Jesse Marsch met last week prior to the Whites’ win at Vicarage Road. They discussed the type of player they want to target over the summer and not specific names who may come in or leave the club.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-updates/” title=”Latest Leeds United updates!” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/cropped-2022-04-02T155252Z_391313781_UP1EI421841M9_RTRMADP_3_SOCCER-ENGLAND-LEE-SOU-REPORT.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Marsch guided the team to a crucial 3-0 victory over Watford to take a big step closer to safety just days after talking with Orta, with Hernandez – described by Hornets boss Roy Hodgson as a player who ‘doesn’t stop’ – included in the home side’s starting XI.

The Latest: Cucho to Leeds claim

Leeds Live reporter Joshua Hobbs shared a story on Wednesday looking at three relegation-threatened players by whom Orta may be tempted over the summer.

One of those was Hernandez, with Hobbs believing that the Colombian could be one to consider following an impressive haul of seven goal contributions for Watford in the Premier League.

The Verdict: Interesting…

Hernandez is still only 22 years of age and was a bright spark for the Hornets against Leeds on Saturday before having to make way prior to the interval.

Lining out on the left wing, as per SofaScore, he completed three successful dribbles up against Luke Ayling in his 39-minute display, while also winning seven duels and completing 100% of his attempted long balls.

His replacement Emmanuel Dennis struggled up against Ayling, so you can see why Hernandez is being mooted as a possible signing. The Colombia international can play anywhere across the front three, which could be handy following Patrick Bamford’s injury struggles this season.

It does look as if the Hornets will now drop back down to the Championship following that defeat last weekend, so Orta may well look to take advantage by landing Hernandez in a possible cut-price deal.

Bell savours his finest innings

Ian Bell will face stronger bowling attacks than Somerset’s in the months to come, but it will be hard for him to play any better than he did at Lord’s

Ian Bell will face stronger bowling attacks than Somerset’s in the months to come, but it will be hard for him to play any better than he did at Lord’s in guiding Warwickshire to the Clydesdale Bank 40 title with a perfectly compiled 107. He rated it as his best one-day innings for county or country and it was an ideal way for him to finish a season hit by injury which ruled him out of the Pakistan series.Warwickshire were wobbling on 39 for 3 when Jonathan Trott was removed by the impressive Ben Phillips, but Bell took everything in his stride. It has taken a little longer than some would have liked, but he is now producing batsmanship of the highest order on a consistent basis. Four days earlier he struck a vital Championship hundred to help Warwickshire maintain their Division One status and barely put a foot wrong during his 95-ball effort on Saturday.About the only piece of timing that wasn’t spot on came when he launched Mark Turner down the ground for what Bell thought was the winning boundary, only to see it stop dead in the turf in front of the pavilion. “It came out the screws,” Bell said, “but plugged like one of my seven irons.” In the next over he drove straight to mid-off with the scores level, but at least his departure allowed him an individual standing ovation. It was the least he deserved.”In terms of one-day cricket I probably haven’t played better than that,” he said. “It’s a shame I didn’t see it right to the end, but I enjoyed what I achieved today.”Bell was also captaining the side, in place of Ian Westwood who couldn’t even make the team, and leading his team to victory at Lord’s ticked off another of Bell’s ambitions as a cricketer. “It gave me a little more determination to be there at the end,” he said. “I’ve really enjoyed the experience of captaining. I feel very lucky to captain Warwickshire, it’s something I’ve wanted to do for a long time – especially to lead the side out at Lord’s.”Ian Westwood did a great job all season but it’s a shame that when me and Trotty are available it makes our batting particularly strong and it’s very honest of him to leave himself out.”I grew up watching Warwickshire. I was lucky enough growing up when they were winning a lot of trophies. We probably haven’t done ourselves justice in the last couple of years, though we’ve been a good side.”However, Bell wasn’t the only star performer at Lord’s. The chance for Bell to guide a steady run chase was set up by Imran Tahir’s 5 for 41 as his legspin ripped out Somerset’s middle and lower order after they’d been well placed on 172 for 3. Tahir is moving to Hampshire next season, but Bell was quick to praise his match-winning qualities.”Imran has done it all season to be fair,” he said. “We don’t get him back next season which is massively disappointing to us as players as well as to supporters. I think he’s pushing 100 wickets in all cricket so we’ll miss him massively. To come on and turn a game like that, there’s not many people in world cricket who could do it.”Somerset’s Tahir-inspired collapse and Bell’s outstanding innings left Marcus Trescothick with a feeling that has been all-too-familiar this season. For the third time Somerset were left in second place, following near-misses in the Friends Provident t20 and County Championship, to end the summer with no silverware to show for their efforts.”Any time you lose is going to be tough, but three times in a season is pretty devastating for boys,” Trescothick admitted. “They are all gutted as you could imagine. It’s very tough to take, but we have to learn some lessons from what is happening.”There is a reason why it happens. You only have to look at the two guys from Warwickshire; Imran Tahir getting five to take the heart out of the game then Ian Bell showing the world-class player he is. That’s what you’ve got to do if you want to be the best, you have to show it at times. We’ve got to improve and try to emulate that.”However, even in the aftermath of another shattering loss Trescothick was adamant his team have emerged with credit from the season. “We are very proud of what we’ve done and achieved as cricketers,” he said. “To be probably the most consistent team and put ourselves in the position to win three trophies, we could be sat here completely different. Obviously we’re not, but we’ve still got to walk out of here with a lot of pride and passion about what we’ve done and what we can still achieve.”

Embleton deserves Sunderland start

Alex Neil’s Sunderland side host Shrewsbury at the Stadium of Light on Friday evening, with a win against the Shrews being imperative if the Black Cats wish to keep their League One play-off dreams alive over the remaining games of the season.

The table is incredibly tight around the play-off places, with Sunderland, Wycombe Wanderers and Sheffield Wednesday all currently on 73 points. And, with only seven games left to seal their spot in the top six, the Mackems know they cannot afford any slips ups in the run-in.

Shrewsbury have lost and drawn their last two games, whilst Alex Neil’s side remain unbeaten in their last eight league fixtures, and with their opponents safe from relegation in 16th, Sunderland must capitalise on the fact that Steve Cotterill’s outfit have nothing left to play for this season.

With that being said, selecting a team that will prove most effective in their final push for promotion must be a priority for Neil, with one player who has undoubtedly proven he can deliver when needed being Elliot Embleton.

Indeed, Embleton has been the linchpin in Sunderland’s climb back into the top six, bagging two late goal contributions that have won his team their last two games, providing an assist for Nathan Broadhead’s last-minute winner against Gillingham and bagging an 89th-minute goal against play-off challengers Oxford United last weekend.

The 23-year-old was previously hailed a “nightmare” by former Black Cats midfielder Max Power, who was full of praise for his former teammate an episode of the SAFC Unfiltered podcast:

“He’s someone who sees that pass that other players don’t. He’s a nightmare to play against in training because he can go either way, shoot off both feet.”

The midfielder has contributed six goals and eight assists over his 40 appearances in all competitions this season, while also having been a consistent attacking threat over his 33 League One outings – being successful with 56% of his attempted dribbles, creating four big chances and making an average of 1.2 key passes per game.

Embleton competes for a spot in the team with Patrick Roberts and Jack Clarke, however, he has surely proven that he should be one of the first names on the team sheet against Shrewsbury, owing to his contributions of late.

Ultimately, Sunderland must continue their recent run of form and keep the momentum going in order to clear the last hurdle in the push for promotion, and unleashing Embleton in the line-up could reward the Black Cats with a third winning contribution in a row from the 23-year-old sensation.

Flintoff announces retirement

Andrew Flintoff has announced his retirement from all cricket later on Thursday after giving in to his long-standing knee injuries

Andrew Flintoff has announced his retirement from all cricket after giving in to his long-standing knee injury.Flintoff retired from Test cricket after last year’s Ashes victory and underwent knee surgery straight away. He hoped to return to action this season, but that was ruled out last month and he then aimed for Twenty20 stints in Australia and the IPL. However, his latest meeting with the surgeon has led to what has long seemed the inevitable decision.”It is with both disappointment and sadness that I am today announcing my retirement from all forms of cricket,” said Flintoff. “The decision to end my career came yesterday after consultation with medical advisers. I was told that the problems I have been trying to overcome in re-hab for the last year following the latest in a series of operations would not recover sufficiently to allow a comeback.”Having been told that my body would no longer stand up to the rigours of cricket, I had no alternative but to retire,” he added. “I would like to thank my family, Lancashire Cricket Club, England, all my sponsors, friends and advisers for all the help and support they have given me throughout my career.”Last, but by no means least, I am indebted to the encouragement and support I have always received from England’s magnificent supporters. I will now be taking a break before deciding which future direction to take.”England’s captain, Andrew Strauss, gave a warm tribute to Flintoff ahead of the third ODI against Pakistan at The Oval, the scene of Flintoff’s last hurrah in the 2009 Ashes, when his direct-hit run-out of Ricky Ponting turned the tide of the decisive fifth Test. “I would just like to say on behalf of the England team we would like to congratulate Andrew on an outstanding career,” he said. “”The impact he has had on English cricket has been immense.”Of course, it is a sad day when somebody like that can no longer keep playing. But we would prefer today to celebrate everything he has achieved as an England cricketer.”The biggest memories I will have of him are how incredibly able he was to make something happen out of nothing with both bat and ball.”He was always the ultimate impact cricketer, somebody who on so many occasions stepped up to the plate. He would put his body on the line on flat wickets when other bowlers were maybe starting to struggle.”Flintoff finishes his career with a tally of 3845 runs in 79 Tests, at an average of 31.77 with five centuries and a best of 167 against West Indies at Edgbaston in 2004. He also claimed 226 wickets at 32.78, with three five-wicket hauls, the last of which came on an emotional final morning against Australia at Lord’s in 2009. In 141 ODIs he finished with 3394 runs and 169 wickets respectively.”Because of the way he bowled, and what he put into it, it was probably not as easy for him to get seven-fors and eight-fors,” said Strauss. “But if you talked to other players around the world, they would always say Andrew was one of the bowlers they least wanted to face – because he could be so hostile. We are all striving to gain the respect of our peers. Andrew certainly did that.”Flintoff’s former England team-mate, Graeme Swann, against whom he first played as a 10-year-old in the 1980s, admitted it was a sad day for English cricket, but suggested that the team had already moved on without him. “This team is bigger than any one individual, but it’s nice when you do get an individual along whom the opposition fear and can win a game off their own back.” he said. “I’m sure a lot of people around the country were looking forward to him coming back. If he can’t, it’s sad, but so be it.””I haven’t seen him for a while, so I don’t know the extent of his injuries, but when you go a while without playing you start to think there’s a reason for it,” added Swann. “But it’s a shame because any team with Fred in is a better side for it. But our team last year was very confident, and didn’t need people going round and geeing up little quivering leaves in the corner.”The zenith of Flintoff’s career was unquestionably the 2005 Ashes, in which he starred with bat and ball to topple the Australians and win back the urn after an 18-year hiatus. It was also, as Swann pointed, a summer that changed the profile of English cricket as a whole. “Itwas a pivotal moment for English cricket,” he said. “The football was terrible at the time and everyone was watching cricket in a cracking summer.”Suddenly Fred was a superstar and deservedly so for the way he played,” added Swann. “He raised the profile of cricket, and out of the whole team he was the ultimate hero. He’s always been the same, never shy to offer his opinion and be the playmaker of the team. That’s why he was such a loveable rogue for the English public to get behind.””I don’t think anyone can put him up in the Botham stakes because Botham is the best allrounder we’ve had, but Fred changed the face of cricket if you like, because he’s the first real celebrity that we’ve had for a long time. And that was all because he was a guy who could change the face of a game at the drop of a hat. His stats don’t back that up, but everyone knows how world-class he could be on his day.”
