Andrew Hudson, the former South Africa batsman, has been appointed Cricket South Africa’s convenor of selectors. The entire selection panel had been disbanded following the resignation of coach Mickey Arthur in January, and the board CEO Gerald Majola had held the post of convenor in the interim. The interim selection committee, which replaced the one led by Mike Procter, comprised Majola, Corrie van Zyl, who is South Africa’s coach, and former captain Kepler Wessels, who is also the team’s batting consultant. van Zyl and Wessels retain their places in the panel, while Shafiek Abrahams, the former South Africa offspinner, joins them as national high performance manager.”Shafiek is ideally qualified as he is a member of the national high performance coaching staff,” Majola said. “He is also the SA U19 national convenor of selectors, which allows him a full view of the emerging talent from CSA’s pipeline, and is a former national selector.”The national selection panel will comprise from 1 June 2010: Andrew Hudson (convenor); Corrie van Zyl (representing the national coach’s post); and Shafiek Abrahams (representing the high performance manager’s post); with Graeme Smith (representing the captain’s post) as a selector for the final XI.”Hudson, an opening batsman, represented South Africa in 35 Tests and 89 ODIs, averaging 33.45 and 29.41 respectively in each format. “I am looking forward to getting involved with the Proteas again,” Hudson said. “They have done well recently and I am confident that we also have the emerging talent to take our team forward. The sacked panel led by Procter took over as selectors in December 2008, just before the historic series victory in Australia which put South Africa on top of both the Test and the ODI rankings. Results went downhill after that, with South Africa losing the return Test series against Australia and only managing to draw the home series against England in in January this year. Between those two assignments were the loss in the World Twenty20 semi-finals and the embarrassingly early exit in the ICC Champions Trophy they hosted. The panel’s tenure was supposed to be till the 2011 World Cup, the same as Arthur’s.Majola also announced that the position of coach will be advertised soon with van Zyl remaining as interim coach until after the ICC World Cup 2011. The composition of the selection panel, Majola said, would be subject to an annual review.

Wolves interested in the "Korean Mbappe"

Wolverhampton Wanderers are interested in a deal to bring Jung Sang-bin to Molineux in the January transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Korea Joongang Daily, who claim that Jeff Shi is keeping a very close eye on the situation of the Suwon Bluewings forward ahead of a potential swoop for the 19-year-old in the coming days.

The report goes on to state that, should Wolves complete a deal for the South Korea youth international this month, the winger would immediately be sent out on loan Grasshopper Club Zurich – whom Fosun have close ties with.

Finally, it is mentioned that the Premier League side are no strangers to the talents of Korean footballers, with the club having recently confirmed the £14m permanent signing of Hwang Hee-Chan.

Deadly duo

Considering the sheer amount of potential that Jung quite clearly possesses, it is easy to see why the Wolves transfer team are reported to be eager to snap the centre-forward up this month.

Indeed, having broken into the Suwon Bluewings first-team last season, the £765k-rated striker wasted no time in making a name for himself, scoring six goals and providing his teammates with two assists over 28 K League 1 appearances – only 23 of which came as starts.

Furthermore, it would appear that there are extremely high hopes for the future of the versatile forward – who can also play on the right-wing – in his native country, with Korea Joongang Daily reporting that the 19-year-old is already being referred to as the “Korean Mbappe” in the footballing circles of South Korea.

As such, should Shi indeed manage to get a deal over the line for Jung this month, following the recent signing of Hwang, the Wolves executive chairman could well form something of a deadly Korean duo at Molineux – leading us to believe that the club must do all they can to land the 19-year-old during what remains of the winter transfer window.

Summerville a big loser from Leeds’ window

Crysencio Summerville could be the biggest loser from Leeds United’s transfer activity this January…

What happened?

The 20-year-old gem has struggled to edge his way into Marcelo Bielsa’s first-team since his £1.3m move from Feyenoord in September 2020 and after the Yorkshire outfit rejected a loan move for him, he could struggle to ever breakthrough at Elland Road.

There was interest from Germany, where Hamburg SV were thought to be hugely keen, and his home country, Holland, as per The Athletic’s Phil Hay.

Game time unlikely

Summerville is way down the pecking order in west Yorkshire as Bielsa’s wing department is well-stocked with the likes of Raphinha, Jack Harrison and Daniel James all ahead of him.

All three have been featuring in the starting XI in recent matches due to the absence of Patrick Bamford through injury but when the England international returns to action, it’s likely that one of the latter two will be dropped to the bench, thus taking the Dutch youngster’s place and potentially only chance to impress.

If he’s unable to get minutes from the bench, then he’ll have to get it from further academy matches, where he has already proved his credentials – as per Transfermarkt, Summerville has scored nine goals and provided eight assists in 24 appearances for the U23s.

He has managed only 225 for the first team.

The 5 foot 9 dynamo, who has been dubbed “impossible to handle” and a “bag of tricks”, is surely going to find it tough ever making a mark at Leeds.

A loan move for the remainder of the season would have been a win-win for Bielsa. The youngster gets a chance to play regularly at a senior level and then his role at Elland Road can be assessed in the summer, where they could sell him on for profit or integrate him as a key first-team player.

Therefore, there isn’t a bigger loser at United than Summerville following their lacklustre transfer window.

'PCB has no choice'

The PCB named Shahid Afridi as leader of the ODI and Test teams ahead of a packed summer, a move that has been largely welcomed by the country’s former cricketers

“I feel Afridi is the right choice for Pakistan. Although he is fit to lead in one-dayers and T20s, I have my doubts in Tests. But right now, PCB has no choice. They are short on options.”

“Afridi has the quality to unite the team. But he will have to work for it.”

“I think the board should have done this much earlier. I don’t know why they delayed it. I would also urge the PCB to name Salman Butt as vice-captain for the Asia Cup and England tour.”

“I think Afridi can follow in the footsteps of Imran Khan, who not only united the team in the 1980s and 90s but also won a lot of matches for the country.”

“It is a strange decision and one that could badly backfire because Afridi has not been a regular Test player and his last Test was in 2006. So how can the board give him the captaincy for two very tough series against Australia and England.”

“The board has taken its decision but it is a debatable one. It is a big gamble. I think Shahid will be really tested in England as he has been out of the Test side for four years now.”

Celtic: Anthony Joseph drops Soro update

Celtic received a late offer for midfielder Ismaila Soro from Dutch side Fortuna Sittard on deadline day, according to Anthony Joseph.

The Lowdown: Transfer listed

Described as a player with ‘explosive power’, the Ivorian midfielder was transfer-listed by the Hoops during the January transfer window, with no firm bids coming in for the majority of the month.

The 23-year-old has made 18 appearances under Ange Postecoglou this season, but only six of those came as a starter. Soro’s last Premiership start came way back on the opening weekend of the campaign and he remains a Celtic player despite a late bid arriving at CEO Michael Nicholson’s desk.

The Latest: Joseph’s post

Joseph took to Twitter late on deadline day to provide an update on Soro. He revealed that Fortuna Sittard tabled a loan bid for the midfielder, but Nicholson stood firm with the two clubs failing to reach an agreement on an option to buy fee. The journalist outlined:

“A loan deal to Fortuna Sittard for Celtic midfielder Ismaila Soro looks unlikely after negotiations stalled.

“It’s understood the two clubs could not agree on a fee for the option-to-buy clause.”

The Verdict: Correct call

Even though the deadline is now shut in Scotland, there are still a number of countries which can still do business. Therefore, Soro could still seal a Parkhead exit over the coming weeks, so Celtic were right to be stubborn when it comes to any permanent clauses in a loan deal.

The Hoops want to recoup the £2m fee they paid for the midfielder, and hopefully they can do just that over the next few weeks.

Freakish Hussey performs a miracle

Michael Hussey was still taking deep breaths when he sat down shortly after the match to discuss what he had just achieved. It hadn’t sunk in

Michael Hussey was still taking deep breaths when he sat down shortly after the match to discuss what he had just achieved. It hadn’t sunk in. Australia shouldn’t have won this game, they really shouldn’t have got close. The fact they were victorious with a ball to spare was down to one man who produced something even he doubted was possible. Words like “freakish”, “extraordinary” and “special” were thrown around after his 60 off 24 deliveries, but for once they weren’t too far off the mark. One impact of Twenty20 has been the number of innings that are acclaimed as out of the ordinary in their immediate aftermath. When there are so many boundaries, so many run chases and so much cricket in a condensed period, it can be hard to retain context. After Yusuf Pathan clubbed 100 off 37 balls early in this year’s IPL, Shane Warne called it “the greatest innings he had seen”, seemingly forgetting a couple of epics by Brian Lara and Sachin Tendulkar to start with. Twenty20 is still such a young game that the true gauge of performances will be how they are recalled in 10 or 20 years.Given that Hussey’s display came in a world semi-final against a good bowling attack under immense pressure, it may just last the test of time. “I think that’s probably the best feeling I have ever had on a cricket field,” he said. “Particularly in such a big game when I was having so many doubts, I had a feeling it wasn’t going to be our day – when balls kept lobbing over us in field. Before today hitting the winning runs in the Adelaide Test against England was pretty special, but I think this tops it.”Whether Hussey retains that feeling when his career ends remains to be seen, and he may reflect that one of his many Test or ODI epics settles at the top. But it goes to highlight the seriousness with which Australia are now taking Twenty20 when a victory is rated higher than one of the greatest Test successes in history. When Cameron White was caught at long-off for 43 Australia still needed 53 off 21 balls. Basically almost every delivery had to end up at the boundary and that isn’t far off what happened. It was all down to Hussey. Steven Smith only managed 5 and in the 53-run stand that sealed the win Mitchell Johnson’s contribution was 5 off three deliveries – although crucially he squeezed a single off the first ball of the last over.”I can believe it because of the guy sitting beside me,” Michael Clarke said after the game. “[Hussey] and White had an amazing day. I honestly felt Pakistan scored 15 runs too many. But you just can’t write us off, with the class and experience we have in the team.”This was just a freakish performance from an unbelievable cricketer. When we lost a few wickets it was always going to be hard to chase that total. Then I just couldn’t watch the last over after Mitchell got a single. I was in the dressing room and heard cheers so knew it was a six, then another one and I thought: ‘What’s going on?'”Hussey’s striking in the final over will be what is recalled, but the way he played the penultimate six balls was a master class in limited-overs batting. The target began as 34 from 12 and Hussey collected all 16 that came from the 19th over with deft placement and hare-like running. No one could have done it better, not even the king of run-chases Michael Bevan, who used to keep his side in seemingly impossible pursuits.Hussey has grabbed the mantle of Australia’s finisher and has done it so effectively in the 50-over game that he still maintains an average over 50 after 140 matches. However, translating that into Twenty20 didn’t quite come as easily. Brute force, such an important skill in the dying overs of a 20-over match, wasn’t natural to him and even in this innings he used a few balls to get in.”I’m not the kind of batsman who can go in and clear the ropes from the first ball so to start with I was just trying to give the strike to Cameron [White],” he said. “Then it came to the stage where every ball had to go and you just have to try. Even I wasn’t that confident we could do it.”It was all a bit of a blur and with last ball I just wanted to hit it out of the middle. I’m so happy and it’s great to see the elation on the boys’ faces.”His average has lifted by nearly 12 runs during this tournament as he has settled into the No. 7 position. He is Australia’s safety valve, who has twice come in with his team in trouble against Bangladesh and Sri Lanka to lead a recovery. When he launched Saeed Ajmal for the third six in the last over everything else looked tame by comparison.
