Karachi Blues sneak home by two wickets

A round-up of all the games on the fourth day of the third round of the 2009-10 Quaid-e-Azam Trophy

Cricinfo staff25-Oct-2009Group AA five-wicket haul by fast bowler Asad Ali helped Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) to a big innings and 53-run win over Lahore Shalimar at the Lahore City Cricket Association Grounds. Resuming their overnight score of 134 for 4, Lahore lost the wickets of Ali Raza and Sheraz Butt in very quick succession, both to Asad. Mohammad Naved delayed the inevitable with an attacking 75 off 55 balls at No. 9, smashing 15 fours and a six. Lahore were ultimately bowled out for 260.A five-wicket haul by the fast bowler Aizaz Cheema set up Pakistan International Airlines (PIA)’s ten-wicket win over Pakistan Customs at the NBP Sports Complex in Karachi. Pakistan Customs ended the third day in a jittery position at 85 for 4, still 11 runs short of making PIA bat again. But they couldn’t build on after attaining the lead and eventually managed a disappointing 142. Ali Imran and Anwar Ali made the early breakthroughs before Cheema cleaned up the tail to finish with 5 for 26. PIA’s openers chased down the required 47 in just 8.3 overs. The encounter at the Gaddafi Stadium ended in a high-scoring draw with Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) batting out the final day to end of 316 for 6 against Habib Bank Limited (HBL). The WAPDA middle order helped themselves to some batting practice with captain Aamer Sajjad, Bilal Khilji and Ali Azmat making half-centuries. Azmat, who scored a fifty in the first innings as well, top scored with an unbeaten 84, off 105 balls.Group BKarachi Blues held their nerve to beat Islamabad by two wickets after being set a middle of the road target of 197 at the Diamond Club Ground. The Islamabad tail too frustrated the opposition earlier in the day by stretching their overnight score of 295 for 8 to 356, thanks to Ameer Khan’s 53. Tanvir Ahmed was the main wicket-taker with 6 for 104. Karachi openers Ali Asad and Khalid Latif began steadily, adding 74 before Nasrullah Khan struck twice. Nasrullah and Shehzad Azam struck at regular intervals to turn the match in their favour. When Islamabad were at 175 for 8, it was anybody’s game but Javed Mansoor saw his team through with Mohammad Sami for company.Junaid Khan’s six-wicket haul helped Abbottabad to a 217-run win over Hyderabad at the Abbottabad Stadium. Set an improbable 433, Hyderabad crashed to 215, with Khalid Usman following up his second-innings fifty with a three-wicket haul to support Junaid’s effort. Resuming his overnight score of 63, Usman added five more before being dismissed by Lal Kumar, who took 7 for 100. Abbottabad were ultimately bowled out for 295. Hyderabad got off to a shaky start in their chase, slipping to 37 for 3, with Junaid taking three top-order wickets. Nasrullah Memon top scored with 68 but Hyderabad suffered due to lack of big partnerships. It was a run-fest at Sargodha as three Peshawar batsmen – Fawad Ali, Sajjad Ahmed and Azam Jan – helped themselves to centuries in a tame draw against Faisalabad. The bowlers toiled on the final day, picking up only three wickets. Nawaz Ahmed and Mohammad Rizwan failed to capitalise, but Sajjad and Jan were involved in a big stand of 201 for the sixth wicket. Jan made 110 while Sajjad remained unbeaten on 117.The match at Jinnah Stadium expectedly ended in a draw as Sialkot batted out the final day against Multan. Resuming on 77, Multan’s Naved Yasin helped himself to 122. Kashif Naved’s 48 helped push the score to 331, extending Multan’s lead to 330. Captain Mohammad Ayub top scored with 53 as Sialkot ended the game at 146 for 5.

Pundit drops worrying claim over Gallagher

Crystal Palace have already given up hope of turning Conor Gallagher’s stay at Selhurst Park permanent next summer, according to pundit Carlton Palmer.

What’s the story?

The 21-year-old has impressed since joining the Eagles on a season-long loan back in July, playing a pivotal part as Patrick Vieira’s charges have risen to 12th in the Premier League table.

However, it now appears unlikely that Gallagher will be plying his trade in south London next term following a string of eye-catching performances, with ex-England international Palmer believing a return to parent club Chelsea is on the cards.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “I think they’re resigned to the fact that they won’t sign him permanently, that is for sure.

“I don’t believe that Chelsea will let him go permanently, so you’ve always got to be in the hunch and looking for good players.”

Crystal Palace fans will be gutted

Vieira made Gallagher one of his first acquisitions after arriving at the capital club, and his performances in the opening period of the campaign have illustrated why the 45-year-old tactician was so keen to secure his services.

Since being ruled out of action against Chelsea on the opening day of the season, Gallagher has started every league game for Palace, bagging six goals and laying on a further three assists in his 15 appearances.

The £17k-per-week gem’s outstanding performances at club level caught the eye of Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate, who rewarded him with his first senior England cap during the 10-0 thrashing of San Marino.

Therefore, with Gallagher’s growing importance to this improving Palace side, the club’s supporters will be extremely gutted about Palmer’s latest revelation.

He put pen to paper on a new five-year contract at Stamford Bridge last year following a breakout campaign on loan at West Bromwich Albion, meaning any potential suitor would have to pay a substantial fee to prise him away from his boyhood club.

It remains to be seen where Gallagher’s long-term future lies, but Palace will want to make the most out of the youngster during the limited time they have him at their disposal, before signing a worthy replacement ahead of 2022/23.

Brad Hodge quits first-class cricket

Brad Hodge has made the surprise decison to retire from first-class cricket, ending any chance of adding to his six Test caps

Brad Hodge has made the surprise decison to retire from first-class cricket, ending any chance of adding to his six Test caps. Hodge, who holds a Cricket Australia contract and was said by Australia’s chairman of selectors Andrew Hilditch to be very close to selection for this year’s Ashes tour, will continue to play one-day and Twenty20 cricket for Victoria.Hodge, who turns 35 this month, said he would play two more Sheffield Shield games before stepping down after Christmas to spend more time with his family. He is the father of a three-year-old son and a five-month-old girl, and having missed the first stages of his son’s life due to touring commitments, he was keen not to let the same thing happen for his daughter.”When you drive your car home after you’ve made some more runs and you see your little boy running around and your little girl, everything comes back into perspective pretty quickly,” Hodge said. His cricket career isn’t entirely over, though.Hodge is keen to play on for Victoria in one-day and for the Bushrangers and Kolkata Knight Riders in 20-over cricket and as one of the most prolific Twenty20 batsmen in the world, he is hoping to be in the frame for Australia’s ICC World Twenty20 squad next year. He said he realised he no longer had the application required for four-day cricket while making 195 against South Australia in a Sheffield Shield match last month.”Peter George had taken the second new ball and I knew what ‘Shippy’ [Victoria coach Greg Shipperd] was thinking – just get through the new ball, get through to stumps, we can rebuild tomorrow,” Hodge said. “That wasn’t exactly my plan; I hit Peter George for a massive six, second ball, straight over long-on.”I’ve never done it in my career and probably never will again. It just wasn’t in my make-up, but it signified that something was wrong, the commitment to knuckle down and get through that second new ball wasn’t there.”Hodge is keen to step aside and allow a younger player the chance to develop and perhaps one day play for Australia. Hodge will have to settle for a six-Test career that ended 18 months ago in Jamaica, when he replaced an injured Matthew Hayden in a one-off appearance. It was a match that few Australians saw and even fewer will remember.Hodge made 67 and was one of Australia’s best performers in the victory but, as was usually the case in his international career, he quickly made way when the star player was fit again. However, despite being Victoria’s leading run-getter of all time in first-class, one-day and Twenty20 cricket, Hodge said he had come to accept that his international career was not to be an extensive one.”I’ve played for Australia and I’m grateful and happy that I’ve been able to do that,” he said. “I’m the highest run-scorer for Victoria and I’m very honoured to be in front of (Dean) Jones and greats like (Matthew) Elliott, (Ian) Redpath, (Graham) Yallop, but I think it’s time for someone else to step into those shoes and have that opportunity to play for Australia.”Would I like to have played 50, 100 Tests and be a great like Hayden, Langer, Gilchrist and Ponting? Of course, but unfortunately that’s not the way the cards have fallen.”He will be best remembered at international level for his unbeaten 203 against South Africa at the WACA in 2005-06, although Ricky Ponting’s delayed declaration to allow Hodge to reach his milestone might have contributed to Australia failing to win the match. Even so, few players can claim to have scored a Test double-hundred.Another of his first-class highlights was Victoria’s 2003-04 Pura Cup triumph, which came after their coach David Hookes died during the season. Hodge tallied 984 runs in that summer and his personal contribution to the success made the win even more memorable for him.But there remains unfinished business. Victoria haven’t won a domestic one-day title since 1998-99, and that is something Hodge would like to see change before he quits the game for good.In Hodge’s six Tests he scored 503 runs at 55.88 and he has so far also appeared in 25 ODIs and eight Twenty20 internationals. One of Australian cricket’s most consistent run-getters, Hodge’s first-class runs for Victoria total 11,278 at 47.39. He also had stints with Durham, Leicestershire and Lancashire in the county circuit and overall his first-class run tally is 17,012 at 48.88.

Journalist drops West Ham transfer claim

After a decent start to their Premier League campaign, West Ham United have stumbled in recent weeks with just one win in their previous six top-flight games.

With the January transfer window opening in a matter of days, journalist Paul Brown has dropped a claim on a potential piece of business that the Hammers could look to execute as they aim to end the season in the top four of the Premier League table.

What’s the news?

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, Brown was discussing the possibility of West Ham making a move to try and sign Sparta Prague striker Adam Hlozek, with whom the club have been linked in recent weeks, in the upcoming window

He said: “It might be that kind of profile they look for. Yeah, I could see that. That kind of transfer being one they do more than [Andrea] Belotti or a [Anthony] Martial who would cost a lot of money and expects to play every week.”

As a product of Sparta’s youth academy, Hlozek has gone on to make 111 senior appearances for the club across all competitions, scoring 33 goals and providing 33 assists along the way, which is very impressive considering that he’s only 19.

Even though he may not have the experience of the likes of Belotti (238 appearances for Torino) or Martial (268 appearances for Manchester United), the teenager has still shown what an exciting goalscoring prospect he is.

Fans could be buzzing

With West Ham having signed the likes of Tomas Soucek, Vladimir Coufal and Alex Kral, all of whom come from the Czech Republic, Hlozek could be the next in line to follow in their footsteps and become a potential future star at the London Stadium.

If West Ham were to sign the teenager in January ahead of the likes of Martial and Belotti, the youngster could be just what the Irons need given how Michail Antonio hasn’t scored since their 1-0 win over Tottenham back in October, especially if the Czech youngster can hit the ground running in a goalscoring sense.

Moving forward, with January around the corner, the Hammers should definitely explore the possibility of signing Hlozek to see if he can relieve the scoring burden on sole centre-forward Antonio. A coup like this would leave the fan base buzzing, not least when looking at the 19-year-old’s excellent scoring record.

Twenty20 freelancers are game's biggest issue

An overwhelming majority of Australian cricketers believe players will turn down central contracts in order to position themselves as Twenty20 “freelancers”

Alex Brown22-Dec-2009

Tired and emotional: Mitchell Johnson and his fellow international players need more time off to avoid burn-out and excessive fatigue, according to the Australian Cricketers’ Association•Getty Images

An overwhelming majority of Australian cricketers believe players will turn down central contracts in order to position themselves as Twenty20 “freelancers” in the coming seasons, prompting the Australian Cricketers’ Association chief Paul Marsh to describe the issue as “one of the biggest cricket has faced.” The findings, published in the ACA’s annual survey of national and state cricketers, also revealed almost a quarter of Cricket Australia’s 25-man contract list would consider declining future offers from the national board to expand their playing options.Asked whether they envisaged Australian players following the freelance path taken by Andrew Flintoff earlier this year, 67% of surveyed cricketers responded in the affirmative. Of those, 22% of CA contracted players said they would consider making such a move now, with another 39% stating they were unsure. No players had considered the move previously.A reduction in touring commitments, greater earning potential, fewer physical demands and the avoidance of scheduling conflicts with the IPL were among the factors players said would be taken into consideration when deciding whether to pursue freelance careers. Almost half the cricketers surveyed said they were open to the idea of early retirement to pursue careers in the IPL, with another 30% listed as unsure. But not all was doom and gloom for national boards. In a promising development for the game’s traditional employers, the prestige of representing Australia was rated by both state and national players as the factor that would most weigh on their minds when deciding whether to play as a freelancer, indicating that the lure of IPL riches has not entirely replaced that of the baggy green cap in the hearts, minds and pockets of Australia’s cricketers.”The reality is that the boards no longer have a monopoly over the players’ services,” Marsh told Cricinfo. “There are new and lucrative options available to players and not surprisingly many around the world are giving serious consideration to their futures. Our players are well paid, but a competition such as the IPL in many cases provides more money for less work. That’s a proposition most people would accept in a heartbeat.”As such I think the issue of freelancing will be one of the biggest that cricket has faced. I hope, for the game’s sake, we can find a solution that doesn’t see players choosing IPL over international cricket. The survey reinforces that our players still have a desire to play international cricket so in order to retain them, those running the game must firstly ensure that the scheduling of international cricket doesn’t conflict with events such as the IPL. Secondly, a period of player leave must be factored into the schedule so that players can play international cricket and IPL as well as having an annual break to allow their bodies to recover and so they can spend time with their families.”Saturation scheduling was highlighted as the greatest concern held by players in the poll. Only 18 % of CA contracted players said they supported the Future Tours Programme in its current format, with 78% voting for a world championship Test model. Entering the final stages of a 2009 campaign in which Australia were scheduled to play 13 Tests, 39 one-day internationals and nine Twenty20 matches across seven countries, only 29% of CA contracted players felt the current scheduling mix was appropriate – down from 43% last year.Almost 80% of Australia’s elite players felt too many ODIs were being scheduled – more than double the figure from 2008 – and most felt bi-lateral 50-over series should be restricted to five games. The management of players’ workloads by resting them from selected 50- and 20-over matches proved most unpopular – 86 % were against the ploy.To alleviate the issues of over-scheduling and IPL conflicts, Marsh called upon administrators to include nine-week annual windows in the new FTP, which will run from 2012 to 2020. He also implored boards to grant players an additional annual leave period to reduce the risk of player burn-out.”We believe these windows must be provided if the international game is to retain its elite players,” he said. “The ICC and its member boards need to accept that less international cricket will need to be scheduled moving forward. The opportunity for these boards is to make each game of international cricket more valuable and we strongly believe greater context is the answer. In our view international cricket desperately needs context in the form of global Test, ODI and T20 championships so that every game has meaning amongst players and fans.”
