Newcastle: Craig Hope delivers Bruce update

A key update on the future of Newcastle manager Steve Bruce has emerged ahead of this weekend’s Premier League matches…

What’s the talk?

According to the Daily Mail’s Craig Hope, the 60-year-old will be in charge against Tottenham as PIF are attempting to do things the right way instead of rushing into decisions.

Bruce is still expected to be relieved of his duties by the new owners, with the decision being delayed instead of changed.

Hope wrote: “We have been told that the new ownership model – led by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund and headed on Tyneside by Amanda Staveley – is ‘process driven’ and will be ‘methodical’ in their approach.

“However, sources say it would be wrong to accuse the consortium of ‘indecision’ and it is more a case of them doing things ‘properly’, suggesting the situation is a delay as opposed to a change of heart.”

Delight

Newcastle fans will surely be delighted by this update from Hope for several reasons. For starters, it shows that the plan is still to sack Bruce, and his involvement against Spurs does not indicate that he is set to be given a chance to stay on a longer-term basis.

A recent survey, prior to the takeover, by the Newcastle United Supporters Trust found that 94.3% of supporters are keen to see him depart St James’ Park, with 95.3% fearing that relegation is incoming at the end of the season.

This suggests that fans want Bruce to be sacked by the new owners, which is why the news that he will be managing the team against Spurs could have left them feeling concerned about the rest of the campaign. However, this update from Hope has allayed any fears they may have had, with the former Sunderland and Villa boss likely to go on his merry way after the weekend’s match.

Another reason why many supporters will be delighted with this report is that it proves PIF are not going to make rash, illogical decisions and risk ruining the club. They are on Tyneside for the long-term and are not looking to make a million and one changes in their first week, which could lead to chaos on and off the pitch, and that will surely be music to Newcastle fans’ ears.

Whilst most supporters may want Bruce out as quickly as possible, they could appreciate that PIF are working hard to have a replacement in situ beforehand in order to avoid a spell of time without a permanent manager in the role. Hopefully the club will be able to resolve the situation in the next couple of weeks and leave Magpies fans with something to enjoy when the new head coach is announced.

Palace fans react to Gallagher interview

Crystal Palace fan feed CPFC Transfers HQ has warned supporters not to ‘fall in love with a loan player’.

The advice accompanied footage of Conor Gallagher’s post-match interview following Monday night’s 2-2 draw against Arsenal.

The Chelsea loanee told Sky Sports that conceding an equaliser so late in the game felt worse than a defeat. Palace had come from behind to lead 2-1 down thanks to goals from Christian Benteke and Odsonne Edouard, but Alexandre Lacazette denied them three points with a goal in the 95th minute.

How is Gallagher doing at Selhurst Park?

Gallagher has started seven of Palace’s first eight Premier League matches under Patrick Vieira and, according to WhoScored metrics, he has been their top performer. He has averaged 3.5 tackles, 2.6 shots and one successful dribble per 90 minutes up to this point, illustrating his all-round quality in the middle of the park.

It remains to be seen whether the 21-year-old, who is valued at £13.5m by Transfermarkt, joins the Eagles permanently or takes up a place in Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea squad come next season.

Here’s what these Palace fans had to say in response to the aforementioned tweet.

Bresnan learns from tough beginning

Tim Bresnan is ready to banish the memories of his first spell in international cricket if he is handed a Test debut against West Indies at Lord’s

Tim Bresnan is ready to banish the memories of his first spell in international cricket if he is handed a Test debut against West Indies at Lord’s. He endured a harrowing experience at the hands of Sri Lanka in 2006, but believes he has emerged a better and stronger player.Bresnan was plucked out of county cricket as a 21-year-old by Duncan Fletcher and thrown in against the powerful Sri Lanka top-order. He began promisingly enough in the first one-day international at Lord’s with 1 for 44 off nine overs, but life became progressively harder after that. In the final match of the series, as England slumped to a 5-0 whitewash, he was carted for 29 off two overs on his home ground at Headingley.”The first time I played I was picked more on potential than performance and last year was probably the first time I thought that I’m ready for this,” Bresnan said. “My game has been going from strength to strength ever since then and I believe I’m ready now.”Bresnan didn’t feature in any of the England squads over the winter, instead working on his fitness, and is now reaping the benefits of being able to bowl on fresh legs “for the first time in about six years”. His early-season call to play for MCC against Durham at Lord’s showed he was clearly in the selectors’ thoughts and Bresnan sensed he was getting closer.”I knew they were watching, you see the selectors knocking around early in the season and I had an indication from Martyn Moxon who said I was close and the next thing I pick the phone up and it’s Geoff Miller saying I’m in.”He admits his first experience probably came too soon, but he wasn’t the only one to suffer at the hands of Sanath Jayasuriya and Upul Tharanga. At Headingley, Steve Harmison went for 97 off his 10 overs and Kabir Ali a horrific 72 from six. Kabir hasn’t played for England since, so Bresnan’s copybook clearly wasn’t terminally blotted by his experience.”I was blown away by it to be honest,” Bresnan said about tasting international cricket. “It wasn’t just me it got the better of, Jayasuriya took everyone apart. I took a lot away from the series, worked on bowling at left handers, and took confidence out of the fact that it wasn’t just me. They took Harmy down, Kabir Ali, Saj [Mahmood].”Bresnan went back into county cricket, humbled by his experience but not humiliated. He now knew what it took to play at the highest level. Last season was his best as he finished with 45 Championship wickets at 28.40. “I’ve been improving for the last four years,” he said. “I got thrown into county cricket quite early as a 16-17 year old. If you look at my career stats they don’t look that good, but in the last three years I’ve been on the up and up.”In his favour he has been involved with a Yorkshire dressing full of seam-bowling know-how. Matthew Hoggard has been a regular source of advice, as was Darren Gough when he returned to captain the club. “When you can have a sensible conversation with him [Matthew Hoggard] and get him one-to-one he’s brilliant for things like that,” Bresnan said. “Last year Goughy was quality, he’s good to have a drink in the bar with telling us how good he was.”However, Bresnan’s greatest source of advice wasn’t a fellow Englishman. “The one for me a couple of years ago was Jason Gillespie, he was fantastic. I spent time just chatting with him often over dinner or in the bar,” he said of the former Australian quick who played for Yorkshire in 2006 and 2007. “He was an ultimate professional and often he was too good for the batsmen.”But if he gets the chance to step out at Lord’s on Wednesday, Bresnan won’t be overcomplicating the game with too much advice swirling around his head. “I just try to be my own person and my own player and hopefully that will be the style that brings the goods.”

Guernsey and Bahrain maintain unbeaten records

A round-up of the matches on the third day of the ICC World Cricket League Division 7 in Guernsey

Adil Hanif played a vital role in rescuing Bahrain’s innings after another top-order collapse•Barry Chambers

The matches on the third day of the World Cricket League Division 7 were all replays of the first-day games which were washed out.An unbeaten 92 from Adil Hanif helped Bahrain to a comprehensive 137-run win over Gibraltar. Hanif played a vital role in rescuing Bahrain’s innings after another top-order collapse, which virtually mirrored Sunday’s abandoned game when Gibraltar had reduced them to 52 for 4 before the heavens opened up. The situation this time was 65 for 5, but a seventh-wicket stand of 74 between Hanif and Tahir Dar (40) lifted Bahrain to a respectable 235 for 9. In reply, Gibraltar always struggled with the bat and in the end were dismissed with 11.5 overs still remaining.Hanif, who was adjudged Man of the Match, was understandably very pleased with the result. “We prepared well back at home and we have played well as a unit here,” Hanif said. “We will try and stick to the basics tomorrow and if we play well we think we can reach 300 with the bat. We’re in good shape at the moment and we’ll see how we do against Guernsey next up.”Gibraltar, who were condemned to their second defeat, after losing to Guernsey in the previous match, would be crestfallen after looking good for a win. “We perhaps suffered a bit of a hangover from yesterday’s match against Guernsey and, to be fair, the rain didn’t have that big an effect as we had them in the same position again today,” said captain Chris Rocca. “They batted solidly in the middle and they did really well. I think we probably have played the two toughest sides in the tournament and I hope that we can concentrate on trying to stay in this division in our remaining games.”Hosts Guernsey continued their winning ways with an easy win over Japan by seven wickets, as Jeremy Frith starred with an unbeaten half-century. Japan battled to reach 150 for 8 against Guernsey, with Ko Irie continuing his good form in the tournament by scoring 49. But in reply, Guernsey never looked in real trouble as they coasted to an easy victory with 11.3 overs to spare, with Frith (56 not out) and Ross Kneller (44 not out) looking in good touch as they helped the hosts recover from the loss of some early wickets.”We are really pleased at how we have done. It’s now a case that we must keep going and not get carried away by two victories,” Frith said. “The boys as a unit did really well and I was really chuffed with the way the bowlers bowled. It really created some pressure. To go out chasing 150 means you can bat without pressure.”Suriname bounced back from yesterday’s heavy defeat to Bahrain by thrashing Nigeria by 95 runs. A 167-run partnership for the second wicket between Troy Dudnath (92) and Vishual Singh (91) propped up Suriname to 260 for 8. In reply, Adekunle Adegbola, who scored 39, again showed some good resistance but he didn’t receive enough support as Nigeria were bowled out for 165.With Guernsey also achieving a second consecutive victory, the stage is set for an interesting top-of-the-table clash when the hosts face Bahrain at KG Five on Wednesday. In the other matches, Suriname take on Japan and Nigeria face Gibraltar.

Roberto Martinez on Newcastle’s shortlist

Journalist Craig Hope has dropped a fresh Newcastle managerial update regarding Belgium coach Roberto Martinez.

What’s the talk?

According to the Daily Mail reporter, the Magpies are looking at the Spaniard as a potential option, with talks set to take place with candidates throughout the coming week.

On Martinez, Hope tweeted: “Understand Belgium boss is on shortlist & would cost less than £2m in compo.”

Frustration for Newcastle fans

Newcastle fans may well be left frustrated by this latest update from Hope as Martinez would be an uninspiring appointment when considering some of the other names linked with the vacancy. The likes of Erik ten Hag and Antonio Conte have been touted with the role and supporters could be gutted if it ends up being the Belgium head coach instead.

In nearly 15 years as a manager, his FA Cup success with Wigan remains the only trophy he has won in his coaching career. He has had 66 games in charge of Belgium and is yet to win an international tournament, whilst he was also unable to lift silverware in a three-year spell with Everton.

Martinez led to the Toffees to two bottom-half finishes in the Premier League in his three seasons, having finished between 15th and 18th in all four of his campaigns in charge of Wigan, leading them to relegation and an FA Cup victory in his final year at the club. This suggests that he does not have the talent required to lead the Magpies into the top half of the table.

Ten Hag, on the other hand, has won five trophies in nine years as a manager at senior level. He has earned 2.34 points per game in 181 matches in charge of Ajax, winning two league titles along the way. Conte has also enjoyed success throughout his career, winning nine trophies in 15 years as a manager, including a Premier League title with Chelsea and four Serie A crowns.

This suggests that they would both be better appointments for Newcastle than Martinez if PIF want a head coach who can lead them to glory in the coming years. Supporters would surely love to see the club win a trophy after many barren decades and that is why they could be frustrated to hear that the former Everton boss is on the shortlist to replace Steve Bruce.
