England find backers but face hurdles at home

England’s case for hosting the IPL next month has been strengthened by the support of a powerful lobby within the Indian board but the final decision is subject to the ECB overcoming considerable financial and logistical hurdles

England’s case for hosting the IPL has received a huge boost with the support of an influential lobby within the BCCI and the Indian team management, which feels that such a move would help in preparing for the World Twenty20 in June. Even officials in South Africa, the other possible venue, admit that they are beginning to sense that the “wind has begun blowing England’s way”.”It’s 70% in favour of England now as per the indications we have got this morning,” a South African official told Cricinfo. “We have been told that apparently, England may be a better fit in terms of crowds, the economics for the franchises who have signed up England players, and travel which would mostly be by road.”Indian officials say the final decision – expected within the next 24 hours – is now almost entirely dependent on the ECB overcoming considerable obstacles related to costs and logistics and the approval of its stakeholders, including the counties, many of whom fear that their domestic schedule will be affected by the IPL.The Indian team management, meanwhile, has made it clear that they would prefer England as the IPL venue. “It would make sense to have the event in England as it would help our cricketers prepare for the Twenty20 World Cup,” Venkatesh Prasad, India’s bowling coach, told PTI in Auckland on Monday. “They could get a good feel of the conditions there.”Prasad’s view was privately echoed by a powerful group of Indian officials including Shashank Manohar, the BCCI president, and N Srinivasan, the board secretary who also owns the Chennai franchise. In fact, an Indian official told Cricinfo on Sunday night that “at this point of time, it looks 90% that the event is going to happen in England”.”They (Manohar and Srinivasan) believe England is the best option because it gives the Indian players the best chance to prepare for the ICC Twenty20 World Cup,” a BCCI official said. “It also means less stress and travel for the players who are currently in New Zealand and will play the World Cup after the IPL. There is also a significant amount of goodwill here towards England for the manner in which they returned to play after the Mumbai attacks.”What has also worked in England’s favour is its “multi-racial, multi-cultural cricket crowd” that would ensure a sell-out at most venues during the tournament, which features international stars from across the world. The England move has also received the backing of many IPL franchises, especially those who have signed up English players and hope to leverage that factor in terms of brand and market value.Yet, there is significant support among officials who actually run the IPL, including its chairman Lalit Modi, for South Africa, which is seen as a more viable option. Modi and Gerald Majola, the Cricket South Africa chief executive, are known to enjoy a good personal relationship, especially after the two boards became founding partners of the Twenty20 Champions League last year. “This gives both the boards a lot of room for negotiations, adjustments and quick decisions, something that may not be possible with the ECB, which has to go by its board for almost every decision,” an IPL official said.South Africa are still holding on to the hope that the logistics, weather and the basic expenditure involved in hosting a multi-team event of this magnitude will work in their favour. “We still feel that South Africa is a better bet for the IPL when it comes to weather, TV timings and logistics,” the South African official said. “For instance, to start a match at 4 pm IST, as the IPL wants to, you need to start at 11.30 am [summer time] in England. Who will come to watch a Twenty20 match at that time? The ECB has some serious problems to sort out first.”Besides, the lobby rooting for South Africa claims that England could present a nightmare scenario in terms of expenditure and logistics. “Where are the grounds?” a franchise official said. “The English domestic season is starting around the same time, and then you have the Test series against West Indies in May. Besides, the cost of hotel rooms and television production in England will be exorbitant when compared to South Africa.”Apparently, there is also a certain amount of concern at the ICC level about the state of venues in England for the World Twenty20 starting on June 5 – the IPL will run until May 24 alongside the English domestic season starting in April and the West Indies Test series in May. “It’s the beginning of the season in England and Wales and there is a lot of Twenty20 cricket being played including the ICC World Twenty20,” David Morgan, the ICC president, told . “I do think there will be great difficulties in relocating it.”Some of the English counties have not quite warmed up to the idea, either. Stewart Regan, Yorkshire’s chief executive, says any move to host the IPL in England would be risky for county cricket.”Having discussed it with some of the coaches and players here I think the view of Yorkshire is that it would be very difficult to put together a tournament in England at short notice for several reasons – the main one being the overlap with the English county cricket season,” Regan told .”But equally there are a number of logistical issues such as team security, swapping over advertising boards and certificates and so on that would have to be dealt with. I think there are more logistical issues than possibilities and I think it’s unlikely that England could handle this at very short notice.”

Lanzini’s value crashes under Moyes

Manuel Lanzini is currently one of West Ham’s longest-serving players and at just 28 years of age, he should be in the peak of his career.

But things haven’t gone completely to plan for the Argentine attacking midfielder as he struggles for regular game time under David Moyes at the London Stadium.

As a direct consequence, the 5 foot 6 maestro has seen his transfer value suffer for it.

Lanzini hit a career-high worth of £18m in May 2018 and it remained at that level for nearly 18 months but with the return of the Scotsman to the dugout in east London, it has since regressed at an alarming rate.

As per Transfermarkt, his value now sits at just £9m, a decrease of 50% from over three years ago, merely highlighting the fact that he’s either not delivered on the pitch consistently or the fact that he’s just not been given a chance.

Either way, it should be a massive cause for concern for both the player and the club.

Lanzini should be hitting the best form of his career around about now, but with only 233 minutes of action this season and only five league starts last term, it’s evident that he’s hugely out-of-favour at the Hammers.

It comes with knock-non consequences – He isn’t getting picked for his national side. He isn’t delivering on the pitch. And the club will struggle to garner substantial funds should they ever look to sell him.

According to the Evening Standard’s Jack Rosser, the £9m-rated midfielder was one of the players that the Irons were prepared to sell for the right price this summer. He told Football FanCast:

“Lanzini is another one who could potentially move on and free up some wages, although Moyes did really like him. Lanzini is an option that if a bid comes in, they would be happy to let him go.”

In recent times, Lanzini has been lambasted for his performances, whenever he has been given that opportunity. For example, The Athletic’s Roshane Thomas claimed that he has been “too anonymous” for large parts of his Hammers career, whilst The West Ham Way’s Dave Walker believes he’s “completely ineffective” sometimes.

He is also among the club’s highest-earners, raking in a reported £70k-per-week, which is more than the likes of Declan Rice (£60k-per-week), club captain Mark Noble (£50k-per-week) and Vladimir Coufal (£30k-per-week).

That’s another factor that may make it hard to shift him on.

Lanzini is now even further behind in the pecking order, following the arrival of Nikola Vlasic this summer, so it could be time to move him on in the winter window, though GSB will be fuming that they won’t be able to get as much as they once could have done, going by the above evidence.

Rafa Benitez set to stay at Everton

The year of 2021 has been a topsy-turvy one for Everton and the club’s supporters.

Despite having Carlo Ancelotti at the wheel, the Toffees finished some way off the pace and outside of the European places. However, they now look in a much better position since the Italian made his way through the exit door.

What’s the word?

Rafa Benitez has only been back in Merseyside for a matter of months but in the last few days, he’d been touted to leave.

That came after the Saudi-backed takeover of Newcastle Untied was finally concluded. The Magpies now have the richest owners in world football and the thought of mass financial backing looked appealing.

Yet, in a fresh claim provided by the Northern Echo, the Spaniard is set to stay at Everton.

They suggest that Benitez has categorically ruled out a move and will be remaining as the manager at Goodison Park.

Huge boost

This is phenomenal news and should be music to the ears of not only Farhad Moshiri and co but also the club’s supporters.

For so long Everton have been craving European football. They’ve not qualified for a continental competition since 2017/18 with their last appearance in the Champions League coming all the way back in 2005/06.

Ancelotti was brought in to try and break that trend but after finishing in tenth last term, their dream didn’t become a reality.

Yet, under Benitez, they have a real chance of getting back among the Premier League’s elite teams.

His initial appointment as Everton’s manager was a controversial one. He once dubbed them a small club and his association with the red corner of Merseyside hadn’t gone down well.

However, he has battered away the criticism and has been a real force while in charge of the Toffees.

For the first time in a long time, they look dominant and organised, providing hope that a European place come the end of the season is in their grasp.

Benitez’s team currently sit in fifth position and are two just two points off top spot. They’ve achieved that without Dominic Calvert-Lewin for over a month too.

The Spanish coach has been able to get the most from his players and has transformed the careers of both Demarai Gray and Andros Townsend. They have scored eight goals between them since signing this summer and look real stars at Goodison.

On that evidence and the fact he could guide them to an elusive top-six spot, fans will be over the moon to hear that he’s set to commit his future to Everton.

Hall hauls Northants into contention

A round-up of the opening matches of the county season from Division Two of the Championship

David Willey made a half-century on debut to boost Northamptonshire at Grace Road•Getty Images

Derbyshire launched their season with a solid but frustrating team performance in which each of the top seven made scores of 24 or more against Essex at Chelmsford, but no-one managed to exceed Dan Redfern’s top score of 50. Redfern, three days short of his 19th birthday, played a series of pleasing strokes before edging to James Foster, who had dropped him earlier in the same over. By the close, Graham Wagg had also made it to double-figures with 17 not out, in a healthy total of 306 for 7. For Essex, Ryan ten Doeschate – recently returned from Holland’s World Cup Qualifying campaign in South Africa – struck twice, as did Chris Wright.Andrew Hall’s timely 95 from 187 balls rescued Northamptonshire from an unpromising 111 for 5, as he added 163 for the sixth wicket with the debutant David Willey, the son of former England allrounder turned umpire Peter Willey, against Leicestershire at Grace Road. Willey, watched by his father, marked his big occasion with a hard-earned 60 from 148 balls, with seven fours and a six, before becoming Andy Harris’s third victim of the day in the final hour, caught at fine leg trying to hook, as Northants closed on 297 for 6. Earlier Harris had helped to skittle the top order, grabbing a brace of lbws after initial breakthroughs from Jim Allenby and Wayne White. But Hall was on hand to prevent a complete meltdown, as he closed in on his first century of the season.Andre Nel struck with his fifth delivery of the season to remove Craig Spearman for a duck, but Surrey were nevertheless made to work hard for their wickets against Gloucestershire at The Oval. By the close, Gloucestershire had moved along to 321 for 8, a total that might have been even more formidable had it not been for late intercessions from James Benning and Jade Dernbach. Thanks to 90 from Kadeer Ali, and half-centuries from Hamish Marshall, who was dropped on 26 by debutant captain Michael Brown, and Alex Gidman, Gloucestershire had at one stage been 247 for 2. But then Benning removed Ali, ten short of his ton as he missed a leg-side flick, and Gidman in the space of three runs, before Dernbach fizzed through the lower-order with three quick wickets. Gloucestershire had slipped to 283 for 8 before Jon Lewis and Vikram Banerjee rallied their side with an unbroken ninth-wicket stand of 38.

New cap Laughlin enjoys rapid rise

Ben Laughlin is still struggling to work out how he has ended up in the Australia team in South Africa after spending nine years working as a carpenter

Ben Laughlin made his first appearance in Australian colours on Sunday•AFP

Ben Laughlin is still struggling to work out how he has ended up in the Australia team in South Africa after spending nine years working as a carpenter. Laughlin, 26, made his Twenty20 international debut in Centurion on Sunday and returned the promising figures of 1 for 32 from his four overs. Now Laughlin is hoping to force his way into the ODI side for the five-match series that begins in Durban on Friday. It would complete a remarkable journey for Laughlin, who has only held a full-time Queensland contract for one season and began 2008-09 without a state one-day game to his name.”I had a decent grade summer [in 2007-08] and I didn’t really feel like I was getting anywhere,” Laughlin told . “I had pretty much had enough of cricket and then I was lucky enough to get called in for the last Shield game.”I went all right in that and then got a Bulls contract this year and I was pretty stoked to get that. Then I got picked in the first one-day game which was probably even more of a shock and then played them all year long and ended up here. It’s bizarre.”Laughlin is the son of the allrounder Trevor Laughlin, who played three Tests for Australia in 1978 and also appeared in six one-day internationals. Laughlin is hoping to emulate his father and make his 50-over debut in South Africa but if the opportunity doesn’t arive, he has already enjoyed a rapid rise.”Hopefully I’ll get a game along the way somewhere,” Laughlin said. “Even if I don’t play, I’m still having a pretty good time. I’m living the dream.”
