If they beat the West Indies, they can immediately move back to seventh but a draw or a loss will leave West Indies on top. “We want to make sure that we stay ahead of them and move up the ladder,” Sarwan said. “We need to keep pushing hard.”West Indies drew their only warm-up match of the tour, against Auckland on Sunday, with Sarwan the sole centurion for his side. He was happy with his performance but felt there was still room for improvement.”It was a very good pitch to bat on and I tried to make the best use of it. The pitch was quite flat but we expect conditions to be a bit different for the Test match in Dunedin. It is important that I start over again when we enter the Test match. I will take confidence into the first Test.”Sarwan scored 158 as West Indies made 431 for 7 in reply to Auckland’s 587 for 7, which included a maiden double-century from captain Richard Jones and a hundred from wicketkeeper Gareth Hopkins.West Indies last played a Test in June against Australia but Sarwan felt the team had adapted well since arriving in New Zealand last week. “It was good to spend some time at the crease … and fortunately I made the most of it.” The first Test starts on Thursday in Dunedin.

If the opportunity arises to sign Rudiger in the coming windows, then Spurs must do all they can to secure him. A backline containing him and Cristian Romero could be one to be feared for the next few years.

The Lowdown: Palace thrashing

The 22-year-old swapped Barcelona for Spurs on the transfer deadline day and made his debut in the 3-0 London derby defeat to Crystal Palace on Saturday.

The wing-back lost more duels than he won and attempted only one dribble, with which he failed to beat his man. Whilst not at fault for any of the three goals, the Brazilian endured a difficult time against Wilfried Zaha at Selhurst Park.

It remains early days in his time at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and the £25.73m arrival will be hoping to settle in sooner rather than later.

 The Latest: Another Soldado

Speaking to Premier League Productions (11/09/21 at 12:20 pm) [via HITC], former Spurs manager Sherwood said that he hopes Royal does not struggle in the Premier League after a move from Spain, similar to Roberto Soldado under the 52-year-old in 2013/14.

The ex-Spurs boss said: “We have had one there at Tottenham as well. He was a centre-forward in Soldado. He came over with a massive reputation, he couldn’t wait to score a bundle of goals in the Premier League.

“It never really materialised. He couldn’t handle it. He couldn’t hand the tempo and the intense competition of the Premier League.

“Hopefully, for Royal and Tottenham fans, he can be really interesting.”

The Verdict: Still early days

Soldado, who is now back in Spain with Levante, had a horrid spell at the north London club as he only scored 16 goals in 76 appearances at White Hart Lane.

Royal’s debut performance was not terrible by any means and having to face Zaha, one of the trickiest players in the league, in his first game was always going to be tough, especially when Japhet Tanganga was sent off.

With Matt Doherty waiting in the wings at right-back, Royal now faces a tough upcoming three games against Chelsea, Arsenal and Aston Villa. That could be his chance to prove why Spurs signed him and show Sherwood that he isn’t going to be another failed signing from La Liga like Soldado.

With Valerien Ismael seeing his West Bromwich Albion side struggle in recent weeks, with the Baggies currently being on a run of three Championship fixtures without a win, having scored just two goals over these games, there is one clear area of the pitch that needs improvement at The Hawthorns – up front.

Indeed, while the Frenchman did bring in Jordan Hugill to help bolster Albion’s attack in the summer transfer window, the Norwich City loanee is yet to find the back of the net over his four Championship appearances, while none of Callum Robinson, Karlan Grant, Grady Diangana or Matt Phillips have exactly been in clinical form in front of goal – with the quartet having scored six league goals between them.

As such, considering the 45-year-old West Brom manager is yet to spend any of the £17.17m received from the sales of players this summer, it would appear highly advisable for Ismael to pull the trigger on move for a target the Baggies boss is known to be a fan of in the winter transfer window – Daryl Dike.

Dike could transform West Brom

Having highly impressed under Ismael at Barnsley side last season, Dike is a centre-forward who clearly boasts the ability to find the back of the net on a regular basis in the Championship, as well as one who is accustomed to the Frenchman’s style of play.

Indeed, over his 19 Championship appearances for the Tykes – only 13 of which came as starts – the £9m-rated man scored nine goals, as well as taking an average of 1.7 shots and making 0.7 key passes per game.

These returns saw the player Ismael himself dubbed an “unbelievable” talent earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 7.15, ranking him as Barnsley’s third-best performer in the second tier.

However, with the Express & Star journalist Joesph Masi recently revealing that Orlando City were demanding £18m in order to sanction the sale of the 21-year-old, it is clear to see why Ismael did not sanction a move for the centre-forward in the summer window.
