Elbow 'wasn't deliberate' – Gambhir

Gautam Gambhir has said he accidentally elbowed the bowler Shane Watson in the chest during a tense exchange on the first day of the third Test in Delhi.Gambhir, who scored an unbeaten 149 to drive India to 296 for 3 at stumps, clashed verbally with Watson during the middle session and then ran into him when trying for a second run.”It wasn’t deliberate, it just happened,” Gambhir said. “I didn’t need to get into this argument with Shane Watson because he had no option of getting me out. There wasn’t a need for me to stick my elbow out.”Watson immediately turned around to the batsman to complain and the Australian players now expect the incident to be looked at by match referee Chris Broad. In the second Test Zaheer Khan was fined 80% of his match fee for an aggressive send-off to Matthew Hayden and the aggression between the teams was on show again.Gambhir and part-time spinner Simon Katich argued regularly during the bowler’s six overs late in the day and at one stage had to be separated by the umpire Billy Bowden. “That’s part of the game,” Gambhir said of the incidents. “They were really desperate to get me out because of the way I was batting and were trying to break my concentration. But the important thing was to just be there, not back out, and keep up the concentration.”The Australia vice-captain Michael Clarke quickly spoke to both Katich and Watson after the incidents. “I did see that [the elbow incident] on replay and I’m pretty sure the match referee, or whoever, will have a look at that,” Clarke said. “Like the incident with Kato, it’s important we all get on with the game. As vice-captain, I grabbed Watto and just said ‘continue to bowl well’.”When Katich was at his most animated Clarke put his arm round the bowler. “Say what you have to say and let’s get on with it,” Clarke said. “I said, ‘let it go, Kato, just get on and bowl, it’s fine, let it go’.”

Pundit says Harry Winks isn’t a Bielsa type player - Exclusive

Former Leeds United midfielder Carlton Palmer has exclusively told The Transfer Tavern that he doesn’t think Tottenham’s Harry Winks is a Marcelo Bielsa type of player.

According to The Athletic’s Leeds reporter Phil Hay, the Yorkshire giants were offered the opportunity to sign the 25-year-old but turned down the chance to bring him to Elland Road on a loan deal.

Despite coming through the ranks in north London, Winks seemingly has little future under Nuno Espirito Santo if the early weeks of the 2021/22 season are anything to go buy, with him having played just one minute in Spurs’ opening three Premier League matches, including being an unused substitute in the 1-0 win against Watford on Sunday.

He did start the recent Conference League victory over Pacos de Ferreira, but the midfielder’s chances of playing regularly are likely to rely on those ahead of him getting injured or being suspended.

And whilst Leeds are lacking depth in Kalvin Phillips’ position, Palmer doesn’t reckon the £18m-rated Englishman’s attributes would see him fit in at Leeds.

He exclusively told TT:

“I don’t think he’s a Bielsa type player. He likes to play an expansive game from back to front and I don’t think Winks would fit into that style of play. He’s not all over the pitch, nor is he a high-energy player.”

Confused Australia battle identity crisis

Australia’s batting deficiencies with the moving ball have not been erasedby their return home from India. While the swing and seam was anticipated andthe Gabba pitch was tricky, the batsmen’s thoughts were cluttered andtheir shot selection scrambled. Going from flat surfaces to springy onesin a week is much harder than the other way around, but Australia expectedmore than 214 in their first innings on a day that ended with New Zealandin control. In India it was reverse-swing that tricked the batsmen on placid wickets, but here it was the traditional method used by an attack that is modest onflat pitches and extremely dangerous with some moisture in the wicket. Itwas probing and controlled bowling against confused and ill-disciplinedbatting. Both teams have known since they arrived in Brisbane that theconditions would be like this – some players expected them to be worsefollowing the deluge since the weekend – but it did not stop some of thelocals flapping like the sails at the top of the eastern stand that hadbeen ripped by a wild overnight storm. So they played for the line of the ball and were surprised to feel edgesheading for, between or through the slips cordon. Feet stayed stuck to thecrease as the bat waved, and the movement was not covered. The errors werecopied through the order. Some balls popped, others swung and seamed, butnot many were left by the top order. The assignment was difficult bymodern Test standards, but Australia made it look harder. On spongy greentops it is important not to be caught between attack anddefence, but the first three batsmen were in the mixed zone and after 7.1overs Tim Southee had the hosts 3 for 23. Southee exploited thetentativeness to gain edges from Matthew Hayden and Simon Katich whileRicky Ponting turned his bat and was unable to deal with the extra bounceas a leading edge went to second slip. The evolving Australian team has an identity crisis, not being surewhether to rebuild from the bottom or continue with theattack-from-all-positions method of their predecessors. All of NewZealand’s players know their roles and capabilities, from the impressiveSouthee to the casual medium pace of Jesse Ryder. Ryder, who was calledfor an over before tea, watched Brad Haddin swing loosely and edge toJamie How at second slip, before he came back to end the innings bybowling Michael Clarke.Haddin was unable to control his aggressive urges in India and if hisbatting mindset doesn’t change his days as Australia’s gloveman will belimited. He was not the only one to fall victim to a mistimed shot. ShaneWatson was a fortunate inclusion for the offspinner Jason Krejza – adecision which makes attaining the required over-rate even harder – andhung his bat out to edge Iain O’Brien to Brendon McCullum for 1. Two oversearlier the wicketkeeper had closed Andrew Symonds’ eventful 26 when thebatsman found himself in an awkward position to a testing delivery fromO’Brien.”A few guys will be disappointed because they were starting to feelcomfortable and then got out,” Clarke said. “That’s the way it goes. Onthat wicket we’re going to see more of that tomorrow. Once you get astart, guys will feel pretty comfortable, but I think you’ll see plenty ofzeroes to fives and tens because there’s enough bounce and certainlyenough seam there.”Luck contributes on days like this, but it sits next to application. Noplayer was more fortunate than Clarke as he showed he could produce someugly and highly effective runs. Clarke is a batsman who always wants topurr but he was able to tone down and was successful at a crucial time. Hecould have departed three times early in his 98, when balls squirtedbetween fielders behind point, and there were other miscues, near missesand a painful blow in the groin.”I never really felt that comfortable throughout my whole innings,” hesaid. “I felt like I had to work really hard all the time. As soon as Ilooked at the scoreboard and saw I was on 30, 40, 50 and thought I’d playa few more shots, every single time I had to pull my head in because Ididn’t feel that comfortable.”Clarke was able to settle and benefit from the good fortune and grittyoutlook. Michael Hussey had used the strategy sensibly in his 35 untilpadding up to Chris Martin, but the rest of Clarke’s partners were notprepared for the graft. Clarke was unable to be moved until Ryderdelivered an inswinger that the batsman missed while trying to drive. Hehad stayed for 217 balls, hitting nine fours mostly behind point, andAustralia were desperate for the contribution.”If you had have told me I was going to get 98 this morning, I would havebeen rapt,” he said. “Getting that close, and the way Stuey Clark hung inthere, I’m disappointed I didn’t get there, but at the end of the day theteam’s total is way more important. With 214 on the board I think we didpretty well, we hung in there and did well on that wicket.”When the situation is tough the current Australian outfit finds it moredifficult to eliminate their flashes and regain focus. Clarke showed themhow to overcome an edgy start and give them hope on a day that ended ingloom above the ground and around the home side. New Zealand’sinexperienced collection has already out-thought their opponents and hasthe opportunity for an upset if it can avoid the same errors that cost thehosts.

Phil Hay drops Leeds United transfer claim

The Athletic’s Phil Hay has delivered some insight into why Leeds United opted against signing Club Brugge starlet Noa Lang in the summer transfer window.

What’s the story?

The Telegraph had claimed that Marcelo Bielsa’s side have been been watching the 21-year-old ahead of a potential move, before Sport/Voetbalmagazine (via Sport Witness) revealed that the Whites remained interested in signing Lang before deadline day.

But, in the end, the Yorkshire club decided to land Dan James from Manchester United, and Hay has now revealed why despite Victor Orta’s liking of Lang, Bielsa himself wasn’t too keen on him.

He said: “People will have seen Noa Lang linked all the way through the window, and the reality with Lang is that (Victor) Orta thinks a lot of him, and Orta thinks he could be very good value and he tends to have a good eye for a player – particularly a prospect – and he felt that that was worth investigating, worth setting up potentially for Bielsa to sign if Bielsa liked him.

“There were things about Lang’s game that Bielsa wasn’t totally sold on – he wasn’t saying that Lang in any way was a poor player, but I think defensively and tracking back wasn’t quite right, and you know that that matters to Bielsa.”

Mistake from Bielsa?

Able to play anywhere across the frontline, Lang showed he has a real eye for goal in his loan spell at Brugge last season, bagging 17 goals and providing a further 11 assists in just 37 games, including netting in the Champions League.

With the volume of goals and assists that Lang delivered last season, and with him still being very much in the infancy of his career, a move for the youngster would surely have been the kind of exciting one that would have had fans buzzing, not just this season, but in the years to come too.

The £19.8m-rated Lang looks to be the kind of player who makes a real impact in the final third and is someone who produces a genuine end product, rather than just flashes of promise.

Given that he only recently turned 22, Lang could have been the kind of long-term project who thrived under Bielsa and blossomed into a real star at both club and international level.

Compare that to James, who despite playing 74 games for United, has only managed to score nine goals and provide another nine assists. That is a measly record for someone who plays in a very offensive role for a side as good as the Red Devils, and while some of those appearances of course were off the bench, his end product and consistency is something that is very lacking.

Given his Premier League experience, Bielsa went with the more known quantity in James, and while that may be the safer option, it may not be the right one.

Lang looks to just have a higher ceiling than James, and this is a moment where Bielsa could have just taken a little bit of a gamble and gone with the more exciting player to see if he could have worked his magic to iron out the issues that he supposedly wasn’t a fan of.

Meanwhile, this Leeds ace has seen his market value decrease dramatically…
