Patience and fast bowlers the key in India – Katich

Simon Katich, the captain of Australia A, said that the two three-day games against India A will be a great platform to push for national selection for the series against India in October.”We have four quicks and three spinners and the selectors obviously want to look at a few players there for the touring party later in October. There is no [Shane] Warne, no [Adam] Gilchrist, no [Glen] Mcgrath, no [Justin] Langer, no [Damien] Martyn … you name it. We took a 15-member squad to West Indies, which was our last tour in June and there is no doubt that the selectors will be looking closely at the performances of guys in this series.”The fast bowling attack will be spearheaded by Doug Bollinger and Ashley Noffke, part of Australia’s Test squad in the West Indies, and supported by Queensland’s Ryan Harris and Victoria’s Peter Siddle. Bryce McGain, Victoria’s 36-year-old legspinner, Jason Krejza, the Tasmania offspinner, and Beau Casson, who made his Test debut against West Indies, are the three spinners. It’s not only the Australian selectors but the IPL talent scouts will also be looking at this series closely. “There are some impressive talent like Phillip Hughes. We have not signed up anybody yet as we are waiting for the IPL council to lay down the ground rules for selection for this season but yes we will be following the series closely,” said a source, associated with the top management in one of the franchises.Katich believed the players taking part in the limited-over series with India A are aware of the IPL opening but will be focused on the job on hand. “Definitely the guys in the ODI series will get a chance to showcase their potential. But I don’t think they will be viewing it that way. When you are playing for Australia A, you see the opportunity to press for a place in Australia but if obviously they attract the attention of IPL scouts they would be happy.”In the absence of the injured Matthew Hayden, Katich had opened in the Test series in West Indies but highlighted Hughes, the 19-year old opener from New South Wales who is in the Australia A squad, as some one to watch out for in the future. “I was surprise opener in the West Indies. I had not done it a lot and it was a nice to get an opportunity. Young Phillip Hughes will get an opportunity here to open the batting. We have had lots of young players here who had a good domestic season last year. We are lucky that our domestic cricket provides good competition and players that have been picked all warrant to be here.”Speaking about his own chances to tour India in October, Katich said, “If Matthew Hayden is fit and back, he will be obviously back into the team. Hopefully a good performance here will help me to be picked for the Test tour as the extra batsman. In the Test team, at the moment, there could be a opportunity in the middle order as well depending some one gets injured or some one getting sick. You just have to wait and see what happens.”Katich identified patience and the importance of the fast bowlers as the two important lessons Australia took from their previous Indian tours. “You have to be very patient here. Things can take a while to happen here, be it in batting or bowling. Last time when we were here, we were very disciplined in not only our preparation but also how we played. We probably backed off a little bit; we weren’t probably as attacking as we had been in the past and that certainly helped our cause. The other thing we learnt was that the quick bowlers played a huge role in winning the Test series. Obviously Shane Warne bowled beautifully but our three quicks helped in setting up that win.”When the two teams met in Australia early this year, they were involved in a series marred by poor spirit and controversies. Katich, however, was confident playing in the IPL had helped many players to sort out their differences. “Hopefully after IPL the relations between the two sides will be much better. Guys have played with each other.”Katich played with Sreesanth for the Mohali franchise that made to the semi-finals. “We were mates. We got along well and there would be no dramas between us.”The Australia A team, coached by Simon Helmot, who heads Victoria’s High Performance Academy, play the first of the two three-day games on September 3 in Bangalore.Australia A squad Simon Katich (capt), Phillip Hughes, Adam Voges, Marcus North, George Bailey, Peter Forrest, Luke Ronchi (wk), Ashley Noffke, Beau Casson, Ryan Harris, Jason Krejza, Peter Siddle, Bryce McGain, Doug Bollinger.

Arsenal: Ornstein issues Bellerin update

Arsenal right-back Hector Bellerin wants to leave the club, according to reports…

What’s the word?

The Athletic’s David Ornstein dropped the surprising claim to Twitter on Monday, where he revealed that the Spaniard has been left frustrated by the club’s reluctance to sanction his departure.

It’s thought that the 26-year-old defender has informed both Mikel Arteta and Edu Gaspar of his intentions to leave the Emirates Stadium before the end of the transfer window this month. He’s even said to be willing to take a pay cut.

The Gunners failed to reach an agreement with Inter Milan over a potential deal, whilst Bellerin’s representatives have provided the technical director with possible destinations but none have come to fruition thus far.

One idea is to include the £22.5m-rated Spain international in a swap deal, with Barcelona’s Emerson Royal and Atletico Madrid’s Kieran Trippier two likely targets.

Frustrating update

Arsenal’s unwillingness to offload Bellerin isn’t likely to go down well with the Gunners’ faithful, particularly as the north London outfit have largely struggled to get rid of their deadwood throughout the summer.

For example, Uruguayan midfielder Lucas Torreira is AWOL in Spain despite not returning to Atletico on loan. Willian has been linked with an exit but no one appears to be willing to pay his extortionate wages. Sead Kolasinac, Eddie Nketiah and Ainsley Maitland-Niles are just three others that the club are still unable to move on.

What perhaps makes this situation surrounding Bellerin even more intriguing is the fact that Arteta looked to left-back Nuno Tavares to replace Calum Chambers, who started on the right against Brentford, despite having the Spaniard, Cedric and Maitland-Niles available to him.

As predicted above, this news has not gone down well with some members of the Emirates Stadium fanbase, as seen by the responses to Ornstein’s tweet.

“Story of our window,” exclaimed one supporter, whilst another described Arsenal as a “shambles of a club,” with one further fan blaming the board for their “failure.”

Bellerin has played 239 times for the Gunners since joining the club from Barcelona as a youth player in 2011. However, in recent times, he has found game-time hard to come by – largely due to injuries.

Last season, he only started 24 league games, whilst in 2019/20, it was just 13 starts due to his ACL injury and a further hamstring problem.

On this evidence, it’s no wonder that some fans and the player himself are seeking a fresh start, though Arteta and Edu’s current stance is a perplexing one which will only frustrate everyone around north London even more.

WHU want Bamba

According to The Daily Express, West Ham United are interested in signing Jonathan Bamba from Lille this summer as an alternative to Jesse Lingard.

The Lowdown: Lingard deal unlikely

Lingard spent the second half of last season on loan at the London Stadium, and he impressed, managing nine goals and five assists in 16 Premier League appearances (Transfermarkt).

However, while the Hammers wanted to sign him permanently, the England international looks set to stay at Old Trafford instead (The Manchester Evening News).

The Latest: Irons eye Bamba

Now, as per this latest report, David Moyes is now eager to sign Bamba instead.

He is said to be available for a fee of £25m this summer, but the London outfit face competition from Atalanta and Bayer Leverkusen for his services.

The Verdict: Top talent

Since making the move to Les Dogues from Saint-Etienne, £22.5m-valued Bamba has done extremely well for the reining Ligue 1 champions (Transfermarkt).

In 130 matches in all competitions, he has picked up 22 goals and 24 assists (Transfermarkt). Last term, he found the back of the net seven times and provided 11 assists as Lille captured the title.

A fee of £25m would be a sound investment for a player who is still just 25 years of age. He may take a bit of time to adapt to the Premier League, but if he does, he could be an inspired signing for West Ham this summer.

In other news, West Ham fans want to sign this Champions League winner.

Dhaka need to win basement battle

Cricinfo previews the clash between Mumbai Champs and Dhaka Warriors

Big PictureIt is probably fair to say that the Dhaka Warriors haven’t had luck on their side in most of the matches. With the batsmen in imperious form, the bowlers sadly haven’t come into their own in the tournament. With just the lone win against the Delhi Giants from four matches so far, this could be the best possible chance for the newest ICL entrant to make a late charge for the coveted semi-final places. Up against the Mumbai Champs, the whipping boys of the second season so far, a win would be paramount to keep themselves alive in the tournament.Mumbai, on the other hand, may well look forward to the next tournament having lost all their four games till date. However, with the likes of the destructive Nathan Astle, Taufeeq Umar and Johann van der Wath in their ranks they may upset other teams in their bids to finish in the top four. Delhi could be at their most dangerous while playing for pride.Where they rankMumbai languish at the bottom of the points table and even wins in their three remaining matches would not be enough to guarantee them a place in the semi-finals. With Chandigarh, Lahore and Ahmedabad all locked on four points, even the six points from the remaining three games would mean a tie for fourth with Lahore or Chandigarh, who are yet to play each other. Even then, on run-rate, the semis look a far shout.Having played the top three teams in the table, the matches against Ahmedabad, Lahore and Chandigarh will be crucial for deciding who takes the last semis spot. At No. 7 with just two points, it is a tough ask considering that Dhaka have fizzled out when it mattered most, but certainly not improbable.Form guide (most recent match first) Mumbai Champs: LLLL
Dhaka Warriors: LWLLStats Dhaka hold the record for the highest margin of victory (in terms of runs) in the tournament – 142 against Delhi Michael Kasprowicz’s one over against Lahore in the previous game, which cost 30, was the most expensive in ICL historyPlayers to watchAlok Kapali has certainly been a revelation for Dhaka this tournament. Having hit the first hundred in ICL history against Hyderabad, he followed it up with a delectable 66 of 35 balls against the Royal Bengal Tigers. Currently on top of the batting chart with 202 runs at 50.50, he will certainly be the key if Dhaka are to make big strides forward.
With plenty of experience and capability to destroy any opposition with bat or ball, Mohammad Rafique hasn’t warmed up to the ICL. But 1000 runs and 100 wickets in both Tests and ODIs for Bangladesh would be something no opponent would be discounting.Quotes”The bowlers need time to settle. They will come back harder and they all are playing after a long time”
