Leeds backed to sign Cantwell

David Norris has urged his former club to land Norwich midfielder Todd Cantwell…

What’s the talk?

Ex-Leeds midfielder David Norris has backed his former club to sign Norwich attacking midfielder Todd Cantwell, as he believes that it would be a great deal for the club. He told This Is Futbol:

“I really like him. I’ve seen him over the years and he is a good player who can create chances and score.

“I could see him doing quite well at Leeds, in that attacking line-up. He’s a very good player. If they have a chance of getting him and I saw that Leeds have signed Cantwell, I’d be happy with that.”

This comes after The Athletic’s Michael Bailey ruled out a move to Aston Villa for the Canaries academy product this window.

Bielsa would love him

Victor Orta must sanction a swoop for Cantwell this summer. Leeds were reportedly in talks with Norwich over a deal for the midfielder at the start of last season and ultimately failed to get it across the line, as the player stayed at Carrow Road and helped his hometown team win the Championship title.

With Villa’s interest seemingly cooling in him, it could be the perfect time for Leeds to reignite their flame and enter the race for his signature. The Whites could have no competition to land the Englishman because of Villa’s transfer decision, which could mean that they only need to negotiate a fee with Norwich and would not need to worry about another team coming in to oust them.

Marcelo Bielsa would love to have him at Elland Road for a couple of reasons. For starters, Cantwell has natural talent and is excellent with the ball at his feet. His former Norwich youth team coach, Gary Cockaday, hailed his talents as God-given. He told The Athletic: “Todd looked at one of them in the eye, put his toe under the ball, flicked it back over his head, turned and he was gone. All without looking at the ball.

“He did things every week that were just special. It was God-given. No one taught it. I always believed if you had someone like that, don’t change them or make them conform.”

In 94 league career appearances for Norwich, across the Championship and Premier League, Cantwell has averaged 1.2 key passes and 1.4 dribbles completed per game. This shows that he has the technical ability to beat players with the ball at his feet whilst also providing chances at the end of his runs. Bielsa would love to have a player like this in his team as he could create chances for the likes of Raphinha and Patrick Bamford.

The Argentine coach would also be delighted with this deal as Cantwell is only 23. He has the majority of his career still left ahead of him and Bielsa could enjoy working with him on the training pitch to help him fulfil his potential at the top level.

The ex-Marseille manager would be thrilled with the opportunity to develop another promising young player, whilst improving his Leeds side.

AND in other news, Imagine him and Raphinha: Leeds must land “unplayable” beast to seal terrifying attack…

Phillips expecting Leeds offer for O’Brien

Kevin Phillips has offered his thoughts on Leeds’ interest in Huddersfield midfielder Lewis O’Brien.

What’s the talk?

Former England international Kevin Phillips has urged Leeds to push the boat out to sign Lewis O’Brien from Huddersfield this month. Leeds have had an offer rejected for the Championship battler, with Phillips now expecting them to go in with another bid.

He told Football Insider:

“Huddersfield’s season has already started so Leeds will have to push the boat out a little bit more and I’m sure they will because he is a very good player.

“If we are talking about a few more million then just go and get the player because the last thing they want is the second season syndrome. They do not want to be caught short. A player like O’Brien would definitely strengthen their squad.

“It is critical that Leeds get off to a good start in what is a huge game against United. If O’Brien came in, I think he would be a real good addition.”

Imagine him and Dallas

As per Phillips’ suggestion, Leeds must splash the cash by pushing the boat out to bring O’Brien to the club this summer. He could be a shrewd addition to the squad as he provides what the club want from a central midfield player and he could be the replacement needed for Mateusz Klich, who struggled for consistency last season.

The Polish international averaged a poor WhoScored rating of 6.51 in the top-flight for Leeds, which suggests that he was not cut out for Premier League football week-in-week-out. Stuart Dallas, meanwhile, averaged an impressive score of 6.87 in midfield next to him.

Therefore, O’Brien could come into the midfield alongside Dallas for Marcelo Bielsa’s team. It remains to be seen whether or not the 22-year-old would be an immediate upgrade on Klich, but at the age of 22, he has room to develop further and he has the physical qualities needed to impress at Leeds.

Anyone who has watched Bielsa’s team play will know how much hard work is required from the two central midfielders ahead of Kalvin Phillips, with pressing constantly a key component of their role. To that point, Huddersfield writer Steven Chicken claimed that O’Brien is the type of player managers love due to his work rate on the pitch.

He said: “He certainly has the potential to be (a Premier League player), if he’s not already. His fitness is incredible and he just never seems to get tired, which is one of the biggest difficulties Championship players have when stepping up to the Premier League.

“He’s never going to be a big glamorous name in the Premier League, but he is the kind of wholehearted, committed player that managers love because they do so much of the hard work that helps other players to shine.”

This suggests that he has the attributes required, physically and mentally, to succeed in a Bielsa team. Imagine Dallas and O’Brien bursting their lungs to get up and down the pitch throughout the 90 minutes battling it out for Leeds, it could be great to watch!

This is why Victor Orta must get on the phone to Huddersfield with an improved offer.

AND in other news, Orta must sanction Leeds swoop for “god-given” talent, Bielsa would love him…

E qual o maior desafio desse período?

Andrew Miller presents the plays of the fifth and final day between England and South Africa at Lord’s

It was the 132nd over of South Africa’s innings, and the match was drifting like a blimp from its moorings. Suddenly, an animated discussion kicked off at the non-striker’s end, involving the umpire Billy Bowden, England’s captain Michael Vaughan, the not-out batsman Neil McKenzie … and Andrew Strauss, who suddenly turned and legged it for the pavilion. As he went, Bowden motioned a sprinting gesture, and suddenly it all became clear. Despite his pre-match protestations that he’d stand his ground for England, Strauss had sized up the situation and decided that, in the circumstances, he could probably justify deserting his post. So off he headed to hospital, to attend the birth of his second child. And at 5.22pm, almost exactly half-an-hour after the close, his second son, Luca, was safely delivered. “He just didn’t want to field, he’d had enough,” said his captain, Michael Vaughan, after the close. “He’s a clever boy, he is.”Delivery of the day 2The newly-married Ryan Sidebottom awoke to headlines proclaiming he was a “bed-hopper”, thanks to some unfortunate innuendo-laden remarks from his bowling coach, Ottis Gibson. Gibson nevertheless was making a valid point about the difficulties of touring life, especially for fast bowlers whose backs are their most valuable asset, and who often find it tough to adapt to a different mattress every week. Sidebottom has clearly been struggling in this game, but true to form, he refused to complain and in his 29th over, he produced a beauty – an inswinging yorker that dipped late to rip Jacques Kallis off his feet. When the pitch is giving you nothing, it’s best to take it out of the equation entirely.Defender of the dayIn his second coming as an international cricketer, Neil McKenzie has been obdurate beyond belief. He batted eight-and-a-half hours for his double century in Chittagong in March, a total of eleven-and-a-quarter one match later in Chennai, and now here at Lord’s he’s added another nine-and-a-half hour stay – and undoubtedly the most vital of the lot. There was nothing that England could do to unsettle him, with spin, seam, over or around the wicket, but eventually McKenzie’s own body let him down. No sooner had Strauss gone to join his wife, Graeme Smith jogged out to join his opening partner as a runner. It was later reported that McKenzie had suffered a slight groin strain, and his lack of mobility doubtless contributed to his downfall, as he flashed at a wide one, and snicked a thin edge to the keeper.Drop of the dayIt was the chance that could have turned the Test. Ashwell Prince, South Africa’s first-innings centurion, was still finding his feet when he drove with hard hands at a ball from Stuart Broad that nipped away from him from around the wicket. Alastair Cook in the gully launched himself to his right, but the chance refused to stick. At 21 for 4, England would have sensed a genuine opportunity for post-tea mischief.Over of the dayMonty Panesar has never endured a more fruitless day’s work than this. A personal record 60 overs in the innings, and scarcely a sniff of a wicket on a pitch that needs to be ploughed, planted with carrots, left to lie fallow for a year then used to graze cattle if any life is ever to be injected back into it. But, never let it be said that Monty doesn’t raise his game when an opportunity arises. Prince had faced a solitary delivery and was yet to get off the mark when he took guard for Panesar’s 55th over. Suddenly the ball began spitting out of the rough at the left-hander, who fenced and jabbed for survival for each of the six balls of his over. After three howling appeals for lbw and a jab off the hip that flew just past Vaughan at leg gully, Prince was happy still to be standing at the end of it.Oddity of the dayHow many times in Test history have more than half the players in a team taken the new ball? Not very many, I’d wager. But in this match, England shared the duties around like a bag of liquorice all-sorts. First there was Sidebottom and James Anderson, then – in the fading light on the third day – Monty Panesar and Kevin Pietersen had a four-over burst at the start of South Africa’s second innings. Today, with the game already up, Stuart Broad was joined by Paul Collingwood, who found prodigious swing and produced more than a few hairy moments for the not-out batsmen – not least Prince, who ducked into a not-very-short ball, and gloved it back over the bowler’s head.Farce of the dayTest cricket really doesn’t help itself at times. Not only does it persist in producing desperate pitches such as this, but no-one can ever fathom what the rules for an early finish are. When the umpires made an offer of bad light late in the day, the smiles and handshakes from the players made it clear they were ready to call it quits. But then, as soon as they had gone into the pavilion, the sun burst back through the clouds, and the crowd – not without reason – began to voice its disapproval. And so, reluctantly, the teams were coaxed back out for an encore, during which time they were treated to Cook’s first over in international cricket.

Nixon drops Buchanan transfer update

Nottingham Forest have seen a third bid for Lee Buchanan rejected.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a claim made by Alan Nixon, with The Sun journalist revealing in a post on Twitter that, after submitting an improved offer for the Derby County left-back, the Rams have once again rejected their rival’s advances.

However, Nixon continues by stating that the summer transfer window is far from over, suggesting that deal could well be struck regarding the defender, as well as claiming in a further tweet that the offer made by Forest is more than fair in the current climate.

He said: “Forest. Latest offer for Buchanan at Derby bigger and with decent add ons. Derby say no just now. But window far from shut,” before adding “the Forest bid is not an insult. Pretty fair in current climate.”

Fans will be buzzing

While Derby’s rejection of Forest’s latest bid will undoubtedly come as a blow to Dane Murphy and his side, the fact that it seems as if an agreement for the 20-year-old could be found if the Reds keep pushing should well give fans of the club hope.

And, considering Chris Hughton’s lack of depth in Buchanan’s position, as well as the sheer amount of potential the England U21 international seems to possess, should Murphy manage to convince Derby to part with the defender this summer, it would have to go down as something of a masterclass by the new Forest CEO.

Indeed, over his 35 Championship appearances for Wayne Rooney’s side last season, the £2.25m-rated starlet helped his side keep seven clean sheets, as well as making an average of 0.9 interceptions, 1.6 tackles and 2.3 clearances and winning 6.1 duels per game.

The man Rooney dubbed a “top player” also impressed in a creative capacity, providing three assists and creating four big chances for his teammates, in addition to making an average of 0.4 key passes per match.

As such, the addition of Buchanan would very much look to be a fantastic deal for Murphy to get over the line for Forest this summer, not only as he would solve Hughton’s issues at left-back, or that he is a player who boasts a great amount of talent, but pinching one of the Garibaldi’s rival’s brightest stars would undoubtedly have the City Ground faithful buzzing.

ICC re-thinking its rules on Twenty20 leagues – Lorgat

The ICC has set up a committee to look at increasing its relevance in the proliferation of Twenty20 leagues and its role in managing such tournaments, Haroon Lorgat, its chief executive, told Cricinfo

The ICC has set up a committee to look at increasing its relevance in the proliferation of Twenty20 leagues and its role in managing such tournaments, Haroon Lorgat, its chief executive, told Cricinfo. It may even change existing rules to prevent its marginalisation, as national boards plan their own tournaments and collaborative ventures.”The landscape has changed very quickly and we now need to re-look the regulations that were developed some years back,” Lorgat said in an exclusive interview in Mumbai. “The Twenty20 concept really blossomed after the World Twenty20 in South Africa last year with other high-profile events following. The ICC has recognised that and put together this group to have a re-look at our regulations.”Lorgat agreed with Mahela Jayawardene’s views that the number of Twenty20 tournaments needs to be controlled as it may adversely affect the Future Tours Program (FTP). “He (Jayawardene) is asking us as administrators to manage the amount of Twenty20 tournaments we put together. Everybody has recognised that it is such an attraction at the moment and we are beginning to say let’s just be careful how much of a dosage we send out.”Because it would impact on the FTP: there are only 12 months in the year or 52 weeks in the year… We have to be responsible in the way that we manage and allocate the number of Twenty20 games in relation to the amount of FTP and we’ve got to find the right balance.”The other immediate issue the ICC faces is the staging of next month’s Champions Trophy in Pakistan; several teams have expressed security concerns and Lorgat said one way of tackling that could be to strike off Rawalpindi as a venue for the tournament. “One of the points we are mindful of that came out of previous visits by the security consultants was that there were no Asia Cup games held at Rawalpindi. As a result they were not able to assess or monitor any of the security requirements. Bearing that in mind we are now exploring whether it would enhance security and whether it would remove perceptions being created around security for the whole tournament because Rawalpindi was not part of the Asia Cup.”We are now exploring whether we should have the championship in two venues – Karachi and Lahore – and we might make a decision to go in that direction,” he said. “Our objective is to remove the discomfort or perceptions that any of the member countries or players may have.” Players from Australia, New Zealand, England and South Africa had earlier expressed reservations over the security situation in Pakistan. An ICC-appointed task force is overseeing the security situation in Pakistan ahead of the Champions Trophy and will carry out its inspection on August 10 and 11. The tournament, featuring the top eight ODI teams, will be held from September 11-28.
