Alan Hutton has played down any concerns about Leeds United transfer target Noa Lang struggling with the step-up to the Premier League.

The former Rangers, Tottenham and Aston Villa defender was discussing the Club Brugge ace with Football Insider.

The lowdown

Leeds are said to be in talks with the Belgian champions over the signing of the 22-year-old winger, who is open to joining Marcelo Bielsa’s side.

He spent the 2020/21 season as an Ajax loanee before Club Brugge’s obligation to buy for €6m (£5.14m) was activated at the start of July.

The Dutchman finished in the top 10 in the Jupiler Pro League scoring charts last season, although former Premier League manager Alex McLeish warned on Friday that Lang could be in for a ‘shock’ if he moves to the English top flight given the enhanced ‘speed’ and ‘quality’.

Hutton stressed that Lang’s impressive numbers shouldn’t be discounted purely because of the league in which he plays. The Scot feels that Leeds adopt a risk-averse approach to transfers, evaluating players thoroughly to ensure they have what it takes to thrive under Bielsa.

The 36-year-old told Football Insider: “He’s playing in a strong Belgian league. It doesn’t matter who you come up against, you still have to go out there and do it.

“To score 17 goals and get 11 assists, I’m pretty sure there will be quite a few people looking at him.

“It will be more difficult but if he can replicate that in the Premier League or even do half of that, you would be more than happy.

“Leeds don’t just buy a player on a whim, they don’t take a chance. They don’t have that mentality.

“They cover all the bases with these players. If I see Leeds looking at a player, I always think he must be decent.”

The verdict

Hutton makes a good point. Sometimes we’re too quick to question players who arrive from outside the top five leagues in Europe. On the one hand, they face tougher opponents, but on the other they should receive better coaching and be surrounded by higher quality team-mates.

Lang may also have the luxury of patience. Raphinha and Jack Harrison are Leeds’ first-choice options on the wings, so he’d probably be given time to adapt to his new surroundings and to Bielsa’s demands without coming under immediate pressure to produce the goods.

That gradual bedding-in period may be invaluable to him and, once completed, he could begin to genuinely compete with the current mainstays in the Whites’ starting XI.

Klopp’s men have won the Champions League and Premier League in that time – they reached another final in Europe, too – while Coutinho’s career has stuttered. The 29-year-old has had a poor spell at Barca, even being loaned out to Bayern Munich, and he could leave the Catalan giants this summer.

According to Sport [via LFC Transfer Room on Twitter], Klopp blocked Coutinho’s hopes of a dream return to Liverpool, not seeing him a suitable addition in the transfer window.

What’s the word?

It was confirmed earlier this week that the Germany U21 international had completed a permanent £11m move to Mark van Bommel’s side, having struggled for game time in Pep Guardiola’s side during his time at the Etihad.

In total, the 22-year-old would make just two first-team appearances for Man City, as he spent the majority of his time out on loan, with unsuccessful spells at Middlesbrough and Preston North End in recent seasons.

However, he impressed on loan at Anderlecht last season, contributing 18 goals and three assists in 37 league appearances, which helped him average an excellent 7.06 rating from WhoScored for his performances.

He was also integral to Germany’s success in the U’21 European Championships this summer, winning the golden boot with four goals, which suggests that he has a very bright future.

Will City regret selling Nmecha?

Considering City are arguably lacking a natural goalscorer following the departure of Sergio Aguero earlier in the summer, Nmecha perhaps deserved an opportunity in Guardiola’s side for the 2021/22 campaign but instead, it looks as if City have cashed in on him in order to fund moves for the likes of Harry Kane and Jack Grealish during the transfer window.

It is disappointing that the Citizens are seemingly unwilling to give some of their most talented academy players regular opportunities, especially after Nmecha proved himself under City legend Vincent Kompany at Anderlecht last season.

The former centre-back sang his praises last season, saying:

“Of course, he still has room for improvement, but actually he is already a quite complete striker. He does not have any noticeable weaknesses.

“At the moment he is already one of the best strikers in Belgium.

“In time he will be a striker for one of the European clubs who are just below the top or even for a top European club.”

Kompany wasn’t wrong, as Nmecha will be plying his trade in the Champions League next season with Wolfsburg, and if he can continue to impress with the Bundesliga side, then this transfer feels like one City will end up regretting in the not too distant future.
