وسيطر لاعبو ليفربول على المباراة، حيث وصلت نسبة الاستحواذ إلى أكثر من 78%، ولكن لاعبو الريدز لم يحسنوا التعامل مع الكرات التي سنحت لهم أمام المرمى.

وتُقام مباراة الإياب بين الفريقين، يوم الخميس القادم 30 يناير على ملعب “الإمارات”، والفائز من هذه المباراة سوف يُلاقي تشيلسي، الذي تأهل إلى النهائي عقب الفوز على توتنهام هوتسبير.

Newcastle journalists Liam Kennedy and Miles Stanforth have sought to explain the ‘method’ in the club’s ‘madness’ after it emerged that Steve Bruce’s job remained safe.

Members of the squad were anticipating Bruce’s sacking following the woeful 3-0 defeat at Brighton on Saturday, but it soon emerged that he retained the faith of Mike Ashley (via Daily Mail).

The Magpies are not currently in the relegation zone, but the gap to 18th-placed Fulham is a precarious two points.

In a Q & A for The Shields Gazette, Kennedy said ‘there was a theory floated’ that change would be more disruptive than continuity.

The club could point to the 08/09 season when they brought in Alan Shearer and the 15/16 season when they sacked Steve McClaren – neither move was successful.

On the other hand, when they stuck with Alan Pardew and John Carver, Kennedy points out, they were able to stave off relegation. Kennedy himself admits he thinks this theory is ‘madness’.

His colleague Stanforth meanwhile suggested the decision was rooted in Ashley’s relationship with Bruce.

The Newcastle owner is said to admire the 60-year-old’s ‘passion’ for the club and trust him because of his ‘experience’.

Transfer Tavern verdict

It is not the change itself that has been the issue at Newcastle – it is the timing.

Benitez and Shearer were appointed on 11 March and 1 April, giving them too little time to make a decisive impact, and you fear Ashley has failed to learn those lessons.

Perhaps the Brighton match presented the final meaningful opportunity to dismiss Bruce and give the new man an international break and nine games to salvage the season.

Newcastle have won two of their last 20 games, and they are only going one way.

Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers has been lavishly praised for his work with the East Midlands club – and justifiably so.

The former Liverpool and Celtic manager has dragged the Foxes from the doldrums of mid-table mediocrity to consistent challengers for the UEFA Champions League positions and an FA Cup semi-final in just a couple of seasons.

The Northern Irishman has now received the ultimate compliment, with World Cup-winning coach Luiz Felipe Scolari saying that Rodgers in on track to be “one of the greatest managers in the world”.

Judging from his managerial CV so far and his immense experience within the game despite his tender years, it is hard to argue with that assessment.

But for a few tricky appointments in his formative years, Rodgers has established himself as an elite coach at every level.

He created a fantastic team at Swansea City, earning the Welsh outfit promotion to the Premier League for the first time with an attractive style of play which earned him the Liverpool job.

At Anfield, the 48-year-old developed the careers of Philippe Coutinho, Luis Suarez and Raheem Sterling among many others, whilst also going so close to guiding the Reds to their first Premier League crown, only to miss out to Manchester City.

After his tenure on Merseyside ended, his long wait for silverware came to an end with Celtic. He masterminded two Scottish Premiership title wins, one of those being a stunning unbeaten campaign, whilst also scooping five cup wins.

Having celebrated his 100th match in charge of Leicester City, Rodgers’ influence at the King Power Stadium cannot be understated.

Whilst he may have to go some way to prove that he is one of the elite coaches in the world, a task which will certainly be helped with the addition of more silverware, Scolari’s assessment that the 48-year-old is firmly on the correct route to achieving that status is not far wrong, and it’s praise which is certainly justified.

وفقًا لصحيفة “ديلي ميل” البريطانية، تحدث البالغ من العمر 48 عامًا إلى مديري إيفرتون هذا الأسبوع، حيث لا يزال النادي الإنجليزي يبحث عن بديل لرافا بينيتيز، الذي أقيل الأسبوع الماضي.

رفض مدرب روما جوزيه مورينيو فرصة الانتقال إلى جوديسون بارك، بينما رفض كانافارو عرضًا من الاتحاد البولندي لكرة القدم، قبل المباريات النهائية لكأس العالم في مارس.

كان المدافع كانافارو الحائز على كأس العالم مدربًا منذ 2014، مع معظم خبرته القادمة في الدوري الصيني الممتاز إلى جانب فترة قصيرة مع فريق النصر السعودي.

الدور الأول الذي لعبه كانافارو بعد اعتزاله أيام اللعب هو فترة قضاها في فريق جوانزو إيفرجراند الصيني، لكنه استمر أقل من عام، حيث أقاله النادي لإحضار لويس فيليبي سكولاري.

ثم قضى كانافارو فترة في النصر في نوفمبر 2015، لكنه استمر أقل من أربعة أشهر هناك، حيث فاز في ست مباريات فقط من أصل 16 مباراة خاضها.

ثم قضى الإيطالي ما يزيد قليلًا عن موسم واحد في تيانجين كوانجين مرة أخرى في الصين، وفاز بالدرجة الثانية  في عام 2016، قبل أن يتركهم للعودة إلى جوانجزو.

استمر كانافارو ما يقرب من أربع سنوات هناك في فترته الثانية بالنادي، حيث فاز بكأس الاتحاد الصيني عام 2018 ودوري السوبر في عام 2019، كما حصل على لقب مدرب العام في الاتحاد الصيني لعام 2017.

خلال أيام لعبه، كان للإيطالي مسيرة رائعة وكان معروفًا كواحد من أفضل المدافعين في جيله، اشتهر بظهوره في ما يقرب من 300 مباراة مع بارما، لكن كان له أيضًا فترات طويلة مع يوفنتوس وريال مدريد، حيث فاز بلقبين في الليجا مع الأخير، قاد كانافارو أيضًا منتخب إيطاليا إلى نهائيات كأس العالم 2006 في ألمانيا.

According to reports, Leeds could make a big-money move for Sevilla winger Lucas Ocampos in this upcoming summer transfer window.

What’s the story?

Football Insider claimed that Marcelo Bielsa’s side are keeping tabs on the Argentina international, with a number of Premier League clubs also said to be interested.

The report added that the Whites are assessing Ocampos’ situation at Sevilla, and is a player regarded as lighting up English football.

Another Raphinha

One of the standout signings of the last summer is Raphinha, who has enjoyed a superb debut campaign in the Premier League with Leeds.

The Brazilian has bagged six goals and provided a further five assists in the top flight alone, and has combined pace and trickery with an impressive work ethic – exactly the kind of description which fits Ocampos as well.

The Sevilla star has scored four goals and four assists in 24 La Liga games, while his attacking numbers are all fairly similar to Leeds’ wing wizard.

As per Whoscored, Ocampos averages slightly fewer shots per game than Raphinha at 1.9 per game compared to the latter’s 2.1, but actually manages more dribbles than the Leeds man with 2.2 to 1.8.

He also wins more tackles than Raphinha, averaging 1.3 per game in La Liga compared to the Brazilian’s one, and that desire to match his attacking instincts with hard work should go down a treat with Bielsa.

Dubbed as an “absolute ace”, journalist Mohammed Ali waxed lyrical about the £60m-rated winger to La Liga Lowdown, saying: “Lopetegui is giving him more of a free rein in a squad with a higher attacking IQ than Marseille, so now he’s strutting his stuff.”

If Victor Orta is looking to land a Raphinha-esque player in this summer transfer window for Leeds, then he should look no further than Ocampos.

Meanwhile, Leeds must surely regret selling this goal-scoring star…
