Liverpool signing centre-back Sven Botman could be bad news for Rhys Williams

Liverpool have been linked with a January move for Lille centre-back Sven Botman recently, which could prove to be bad news for young Rhys Williams.

French news outlet Foot Mercato have claimed that Liverpool have expressed interest in signing the 20-year-old and even contacted his representatives in November.

The six-foot-four centre-back has impressed for Christophe Galtier’s side so far this season, having made 17 appearances in the top-flight, averaging a superb 7.13 rating.

Therefore, it is no surprise to hear that Liverpool are reportedly taking an interest in the £9 million-rated defender, especially considering their current injury woes.

Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez are both out for the foreseeable future, whilst Joel Matip has been injury-prone throughout his time with the Merseyside club, meaning Jurgen Klopp has been left without a senior centre-back for much of the season.

Fabinho has done a superb job filling in there, whilst both Nathaniel Phillips and Rhys Williams have impressed when called upon by the German manager.

However, if the Reds were to sign Botman in January, it could harm Williams’ chances of featuring in the first-team for the rest of the season, as you would imagine that the German manager would rotate between Botman, Fabinho and Matip until Gomez and Van Dijk are fit to return.

This could spell trouble for Williams’, as despite his impressive performances at times this season, he is still very inexperienced, having only played senior football for Kidderminster Harriers before breaking into the Liverpool first-team this season.

The academy graduate was heavily praised by Klopp for his display against Atalanta in the Champions League, with the manager saying:

“We can start with Rhys – exceptional. I cannot imagine being 19 years old and playing my second professional football game in the Champions League against [Atalanta striker Duvan] Zapata, it’s incredible! I would have been nervous like hell, but the boy was not.”

Whilst he also caught the eye in the recent 2-1 win against Tottenham Hotspur, you worry that when Liverpool’s senior defenders return to full fitness, he could struggle for game time in this Liverpool side, especially if they were to sign Botman in next month’s transfer window.

It will be interesting to see if the Reds opt to add reinforcements at centre-back in January, or whether Klopp decides to keep faith in the likes of Williams and Phillips, in the hope that they can help deliver a second successive Premier League title.

Celtic must sell Odsonne Edouard in the January transfer window

Celtic must make a ruthless decision on Odsonne Edouard’s long-term future at the club and sell him in the January transfer window.

What’s the story?

Reports over the summer suggested that Premier League sides like Arsenal were interested in signing him, but a deal failed to materialise before the end of the deadline.

Since then, Neil Lennon’s side have been unable to tie down Edouard to a new contract to stay at Celtic Park, and now Football Insider have revealed that the Frenchman has “switched agents in a development that is set to have a massive bearing on his Celtic future”.

Celtic must sell

With 11 goals in 23 games this season, Edouard certainly hasn’t been awful at all for the Hoops, but there’s been a drop-off in his performances.

Former Scotland international, Alan Hutton, said earlier last month: “We had all the talks about Edouard at the start of season wanting to leave – has his head been on it? Has he been the same player that he was last year? No.

“Whether he’s got someone in his ear saying: ‘Play your way, do your thing up until January or the summer and then we’ll move you on,’ I don’t know if those conversations have happened. He’s a massive asset, he will be worth a lot of money but it looks like he wants to move on.”

The longer Edouard stays at Celtic without his long-term future being resolved, the bigger the headache becomes for Lennon. Is the £13.5m-rated Frenchman someone the Bhoys can rely upon going forward? Or will he be looking for a quick exit the moment an offer comes in?

That uncertainty is bound to have an impact on how he plays on the pitch, no matter how good someone is at blocking out the outside noise. Celtic could move on for the better by calling time on Edouard’s stay at the club.

Wolves eye Christian Eriksen swoop

Nuno Santo has reportedly been told to forget about big-money deals this month.

Thus, it feels unlikely the Old Gold will be able to strengthen significantly. Considering they’ve won just two of their last nine games, this is a big concern.

What’s the word?

Bearing in mind the aforementioned statement, it’s hard to picture Wolves signing anybody. Of course, that won’t deter the rumour mill from kicking into gear.

Tim Spiers reported earlier this month that signing Christian Eriksen was pretty much out of the question but there has now been an update on his future.

Per Gianluca Di Marzio, Wolves have specifically contacted the player’s entourage over a possible transfer. Ajax have also done the same although their interest isn’t completely concrete at this stage.

It’s not known how much the Dane would cost but Inter spent £16.9m on Eriksen just a year ago.

Best signing since Jimenez

When Raul Jimenez first set foot in English football it was unknown how he would do. This was a player arriving from Benfica having scored just eight goals in over 40 appearances.

However, his impact in the Premier League has been phenomenal. The Mexican has racked up 47 strikes in just 110 outings for Nuno’s team and has been the very definition of a game-changer.

Eriksen may play in a completely different position but in terms of instant impact and providing supporters with magical moments, they could seal their best signing since Jimenez with the Denmark international.

Vitally, the attacking midfielder has experience of life in England already and was an ingenious talent at Spurs. Although his final season in north London curtailed disastrously, he scored 69 times and registered 89 assists for the Lilywhites.

Time and time again he’d come up with vital goals, unleashing fierce efforts from dead-ball situations and from outside the area.

As of January 1st 2019, Eriksen had scored 19 goals from outside the 18-yard area in the top-flight, a tally that surpassed every single player in the Premier League from when he first made his debut in 2013. If that doesn’t have magic written all over it, nothing will.

Though, he isn’t all about scoring goals. Described as “ruthless” by Jamie Redknapp for his playmaking abilities in 2018, the 28-year-old can pick the lock of even the very best around.

For instance, Eriksen registered four assists during Tottenham’s run to the Champions League final in the 2018/19 season.

He is a wonderful talent who on his day is capable of producing incredible moments. Like Jimenez, he could take Wolves to European football and possibly even greater heights. This would be one of Jeff Shi’s best signings at Molineux yet.
