West Brom’s start to the season has been rather excellent, so it is hard to criticise how Slaven Bilic has done things so far.

Albion are unbeaten in the league, sitting in fourth after three wins and three draws.

The one negative could be the fact that they are yet to keep a clean sheet though injuries to Ahmed Hegazi and Kieran Gibbs haven’t exactly helped.

In attack, things will only get better as Charlie Austin ramps up his fitness, having barely had much of a pre-season after his former Saints manager Ralph Hasenhuttl left him out of their squad.

Out wide things are starting to look dangerous with Grady Diangana, Matt Phillips and Matheus Pereira all finding their feet – scoring five and assisting three between them, per WhoScored.

The midfield trio of Jake Livermore, Romaine Sawyers, and Filip Krovinovic have been instrumental in applying the Croatian’s passing style of football as the lowest passing success rate between the three is 85.8%.

However, it does raise question marks over the contribution of Rekeem Harper.

The first thing Bilic did when arriving in the summer was ensuring that the promising midfielder was kept at the club, the 19-year-old soon signed a contract extension as it appeared he was likely to be part of his plans this season.

That hasn’t quite worked out as of yet, which makes the decision not only seem bizarre, but it could also prove detrimental to the starlet’s career.

Harper has played just six minutes so far in the Championship, so he may well regret rushing to sign on the dotted line this summer.

If Bilic knew he was going to operate with the three midfielders mentioned above, as well as bringing Gareth Barry back into the mix following injury, then he should have done what he did with Sam Field, who plays in the same position and has gone out on loan to Charlton Athletic in the same division.

At least then he would be getting regular game time because anything but that is only going to stall his development – he’s one of their most promising talents, he needs to be playing men’s football. It’s as simple as that.

The Croatian has told the local press that the 19-year-old is training well, so there’s a possibility of seeing him in the near future, but don’t hold your breath.

If Bilic continues to leave him out, he could well see Harper seek pastures new.

أكد خالد بيومي المحلل الرياضي، أنه لم يعد يثق في بيتسو موسيمامي المدير الفني لفريق الأهلي، لافتا إلى أن التأهل إلى ربع نهائي دوري أبطال إفريقيا أصبح بين أقدام اللاعبين فقط.

وأضاف: “أفشة بدأ مستواه يعود، حسين الشحات ما زال بعيدا نوعا ما، والتر بواليا لم يدخل في الأجواء، وموسيماني ساهم بشكل كبير جدا في فقد أليو ديانج الثقة بنفسه”.

وبالحديث عن أقوى الأندية داخل القارة حاليا، قال: “أفضل فريق حاليا في إفريقيا هو ماميلودي صن داونز، أفضل نتائج وأداء، الوداد المغربي لا يفكر حاليا في التأهل بل يفكر في تحقيق اللقب، وهو الأقرب إلى ذلك بعد الأداء الذي شاهدته، ويحسب لفوزي البنزرتي عودة أيوب الكعبي، وأحذر جميع الفرق العربية من الوداد وصن داونز”.

واختتم: “كنت أتمنى أن أرى نهائيا بين الزمالك والأهلي مرة أخرى، ونحقق حلما لم يتحقق في إفريقيا وهو أن يصلا في نستختين متتاليتين، ولكن هذه المرة الأمر صعب جدا”.

According to Spanish publication Marca, Christian Eriksen has “rejected every contract offer” Tottenham have offered him, and is waiting for a call from Real Madrid.

What’s the word?

The Denmark international saw his name linked with a move away from Spurs all summer, and reports in the closing stages of the transfer window had suggested Manchester United were eyeing up a potential swoop.

However, it was then claimed Eriksen has his heart set on a future transfer to Madrid, and Marca now back that, saying the 27-year-old is “hoping” the Spanish side come back in for him.

The report adds the playmaker’s lawyers are making phone calls to clubs across Europe, with the Dane free to talk to clubs in January over a free transfer in the summer.

Since his arrival from Ajax a few years ago, Eriksen has proven his quality in English football year-in and year-out. The 27-year-old has amassed 67 goals and 86 assists in 281 games for the north London side, and is a key performer for Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

However, the Spurs boss’ comments in recent weeks have acted as an eye-opener. The Argentine publicly admitted that players like Eriksen were distracted over their futures being uncertain at the club, and all the transfer talk surrounding them was having a negative impact.

Whilst Pochettino has now insisted the squad have been able to re-focus, those previous issues are simply going to resurface in a couple of months time when the January transfer window rolls around. At that point, Spurs really will be left with a major conundrum. They only have to look at their bitter rivals Arsenal and see the kind of perilous situation the team can be in when key stars could be set to depart.

If Spurs can’t convince Eriksen to sign a new deal before January, it would be in their best interests to simply sell him. No waiting around or hoping, but acting decisively to ensure the squad knows where they stand and to prevent the catastrophe of losing him for free in the summer.

Jamie Carragher has been speaking about previous encounters between Liverpool and Chelsea, and believes Luis Suarez’s actions in the 2013 clash ended up costing his team the title.

What did he say?

The event the former Reds player is referring to is of course the match when Suarez bit Branislav Ivanovic, and action which resulted in an eight-match ban, causing the Urugyuan to miss Liverpool’s opening five games of the following season.

Of those games, Liverpool dropped points against Southampton and Swansea, opponents Carragher claims Liverpool could and probably would have been beaten with Suarez in the side, so the striker cost them the title, given they lost it by only two points.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Carragher said: “Suarez was banned for five or six games. Liverpool lost the league, I think, on goal difference.

“If Suarez is playing, they probably win both of them, but let’s be conservative, you beat Southampton at home – you don’t realise at the time, [but] looking back now, and the season he had the next year … I think if he’d been playing in those games it would’ve been different.”

Whilst Carragher is incorrect about the points gap, Suarez was the standout player that season, as evidenced by him winning the Players’ Player of the Year and the Football Writers’ Player of the Year, and any team would have missed a player of his quality.

Quality throughout

Given his record, it is harsh for Carragher to suggest Suarez cost Liverpool the title, as they wouldn’t have been in the position to win it without him in the team, and it is a somewhat controversial reflection on a player who scored 82 goals in 133 appearances for the club.

Now, Liverpool are better placed under Jurgen Klopp.

There are key players in all areas of the squad, and even with one of the front three unavailable the team wouldn’t be too severely affected due to the quality of the others.

Liverpool lacked that in 2013/14. Steven Gerrard, Daniel Sturridge and Raheem Sterling all played major roles, but they lacked the dynamism of Suarez, who won many games of his own and finished the season with 31 Premier League goals in 33 matches.

He also contributed 17 assists, and therefore the Reds were more dependent on him for goals than they are on any current player, even Mo Salah.

Lionel Messi has officially been named FIFA’s “The Best” player of the 2018/19 season.

The 32-year-old Argentine wizard edged out Liverpool centre-back Virgil van Dijk and his long-lasting nemesis on the pitch, Juventus’ Cristiano Ronaldo, in a tight race for the top spot.

But at the end of the day, Messi was perhaps the rightful winner – he scored 51 goals and provided 22 assists in 2018/19 – and is once again on top of the footballing world.

Of course, this was music to many of Barcelona’s fans’ ears.

They couldn’t wait for the Argentine to be announced as The Best and as soon as he was, they swarmed social media and Twitter with their messages of support and excitement.
