Transfer Focus: Reported Madrid offer for Eriksen is too good to pass up

[ad_pod ]

Real Madrid plan to offer Tottenham Dani Ceballos as part of a player-plus-cash deal for Christian Eriksen, and the Lilywhites would be foolish not to take it.

What’s the story?

According to The Sun, Real Madrid are set to bid £45m plus Ceballos to secure Eriksen’s services this summer.

The Danish international is expected to leave after admitting he wants a new challenge, and is on Zinedine Zidane’s shopping list.

Ceballos is currently on international duty with Spain’s Under-21 side, scoring in a 3-1 defeat to Italy last weekend.

The 22 year-old wants to leave the Bernabeu in search of more playing time, and he is tailor made to blossom under Mauricio Pochettino.

Should Spurs sell Kieran Trippier? Check out the for and against in the video below…

Shrewd investment

Financially, this deal makes a lot of sense for both sides. Real Madrid get a ready-made superstar who will add flair and end product to their midfield without breaking the bank after a busy start to their summer.

Tottenham get rid of a player who doesn’t want to be at the club, has just one year left on his contract and was poor for much of the season, all while making a huge profit on his £11.5m move from Ajax in 2013 and securing a potential replacement in the process.

Now, whether or not Ceballos can step in and “replace” Eriksen is impossible to know, but the young midfielder does have all the makings of a brilliant Pochettino midfielder.

Capable of playing on the flank, as a number ten or as an out-an-out central midfielder, the Spaniard completed 92% of his passes in all competitions this season, completing one key pass per game despite playing many of his minutes from the bench.

His creativity and versatility are matched by his ability on the ball too – he completed five dribbles and drew four fouls in Spain’s aforementioned defeat to Italy last weekend.

The final component needed from any Pochettino midfielder or attacker is a willingness to press and defend from the front, and Whoscored list both Ceballos’ tackling and his defensive contribution as “strong”.

Able to play in several positions, offering skill, flair and creativity, all with the work rate to meet Pochettino’s demands, Ceballos could become an excellent player in north London, and securing his services while quadrupling their money on Eriksen would be clever business from Daniel Levy and the club.

Leeds: £30m is too good to turn down for 2018/19 star Kalvin Phillips

Leeds fans, please don’t have a go at us for this before we have a chance to give you our reasoning on why Kalvin Phillips should be allowed to leave, just hold out before taking to the comments section, as you may be surprised to see taking £30m for Phillips would be excellent business.

The young midfield man has proven to be one of the best players in the Championship under Marcelo Bielsa in the last 12 months, and there is absolutely no doubting that if he is to leave he would command a huge transfer fee. That’s where this story from The Sun comes in, as Alan Nixon has claimed Leeds are standing firm and demanding £30m as Aston Villa are after the 23-year-old defensive midfielder.

We all know that £30 million looks huge on the face of things, but considering that Phillips is young and English it shouldn’t be too big of a shock, even if it is a slap in the face to Dean Smith, who is also being priced out of moves for Jack Butland and Tyrone Mings, according to the same story in The Sun.

We’re still in the early stages of the summer, though, and whilst the money involved won’t change, Aston Villa’s stance will almost certainly have to as we get deeper into the window. As desperation may set in, it would be no shock to see them fork out the money for the Leeds man, and if that happens then Bielsa will have plenty of cash to splash himself at Elland Road.

Panic buying, we’ve seen it so many times.

The midfield at the Yorkshire club have been mightily impressive, and allowing Phillips to leave may dent that midfield, but if it means they can bring in a striker capable of staying fit and putting away the incredible amount of chances that the Bielsa machine creates, then it would be a small price to pay to lose Phillips.

The stats speak for themselves, according to WhoScored, the Whites averaged more possession (59.5%) and more shots per game (17.2) than any other Championship side last season, yet when it came to goals they came 5th, scoring less than Norwich, Aston Villa, West Brom and Sheffield United. With that in mind, it would surely make sense to reinvest the Phillips money into a goalscorer.

Leeds fans, would you allow Phillips to leave for £30 million? Let us know and comment below!

What is Aaron Ramsey’s Arsenal legacy?

[ad_pod ]

This is the first instalment in Football FanCast’s Legacies series, which pays tribute to those players and managers leaving a compelling story behind as they move on to pastures new.

In the opening piece of Football FanCast’s Legacies series, we take a look at Juventus-bound Aaron Ramsey, who has left north London on a free transfer after 11 stellar years of service at the club.

The Welshman’s departure has been met with scepticism and doubt from most fans, as Arsenal’s number eight departs on the back of some of his best performances at the Emirates despite over a decade of service.

Leaving with many fond memories for fans to cherish, we analyse the midfielder’s legacy at the Emirates Stadium.

An Overview

Ramsey arrived at Arsenal from Cardiff as a promising young midfielder, beginning his love affair with the FA Cup in a final defeat against Portsmouth. His substitute appearance in the final was just the beginning of his journey in the competition, where he’d go on to write his own cup history in the following decade.

Before any trophy was lifted, Ramsey suffered a major set-back. In February 2010, the midfielder was stretchered off after Ryan Shawcross’ horror challenge left the Gunner nursing a broken leg – one considered too graphic for many media outlets to broadcast – for the next 12 months before an eagerly awaited return in another FA Cup appearance, this time at Old Trafford. While that particular tie ended in defeat, the Gunners later got their revenge at the Emirates in a 1-0 Premier League win thanks to Ramsey’s sweeping finish.

The Welshman’s best season came in 2013-2014 in which he scored 16 goals in all competitions, including the winner against Hull in a wonderful FA Cup 3-2 come-back victory, delivering Arsenal their first trophy in nine years. Ramsey returned to Wembley to play in two more finals and win a total of three FA Cups, two Community Shields, and even had his final bow with the England ground as he scored a tremendous goal in a 1-1 draw against arch-rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

Stat Breakdown

Injuries have plagued Ramsey’s development and availability.

262 appearances in 11 seasons equates to an average of about 24 per season, which aren’t particularly low numbers, though the Welshman has missed his fair share of matches with short-term muscle injuries he’s never been able to truly recover from. Despite his fitness problems, he’s remained an integral part of the squad under both Arsene Wenger and Unai Emery thereafter.

A grand total of 40 goals and 46 assists in the league are excellent numbers, especially considering he’s often been used as a central midfielder with key defensive responsibilities, lining up alongside a more creative influence like Mesut Ozil or Santi Cazorla.

Ramsey’s reputation as a goal scoring midfielder blew up after his 2013/14 campaign, and he remained a steady goalscorer after that, registering 37 more goals in all competitions in the following seasons. In those years he remained a creative influence as well, bagging himself 38 assists.

Memorable Moments

Two moments in particular will undoubtedly stand out when fans look back at Ramsey’s Arsenal legacy: the FA Cup winners against Hull and Chelsea.

From 2-0 down, Arsenal pulled off a remarkable come-back to beat Hull 3-2 with Ramsey’s extra-time winner earning the Gunners their first FA Cup and major trophy since 2005. As the Gunners probed for a winner, Olivier Giroud showed great composure and awareness to back-heel the ball into the path of the on-running midfielder, who used the outside of his boot to drive the ball into the bottom near corner of the goal and claim the trophy for his side.

Ramsey went on to start in two more finals, beating Aston Villa 4-0 and Chelsea 2-1, the latter being a particularly glowing moment in the Gunners’ recent history.

Antonio Conte’s men were newly crowned Premier League champions heading into the final and the odds were stacked enormously in the Blues’ favour, especially after Arsenal’s dismal campaign which saw Wenger’s side finish outside the top four for the first time in his tenure. But Ramsey and the rest in Arsenal pulled off a wonderful performance despite the surrounding negativity and injury problems.

Having led 1-0 for most of the game, Arsenal conceded to Diego Costa who pulled his side level, but moments later Ramsey was on the score board as his piercing run into the box was found by Giroud, who chipped the ball into the penalty area for Ramsey to head into the back of the net and secure a 13th FA Cup trophy for the North Londoner’s, making them the outright best FA Cup team of all time.

What is his legacy?

The Welshman’s legacy is a culmination of inspiring moments.

He arrived as a youngster from a lower league, proved his quality and repaid Wenger’s faith in making bargain signings and promoting youth, recovered from a near career-ending injury, having to play through moments of bad form and serious criticism, before becoming one of Arsenal’s most important leadership figures.

His legacy lies within his commendable attitude, exceptional talent, and exemplary work ethic, but more importantly, in his journey to getting where he is today.

The midfielder has certainly had moments that some Arsenal’s legends would be proud of themselves. Compliment this with his sheer passion and love for the club, his unwavering commitment and professionalism and you’ve got a player who’s leaving with real love from the Arsenal faithful.

However, when it comes down to it, his ability and achievements don’t quite match some of the Gunners’ greatest of all time.

Legendary status is a bridge too far for the much-loved midfielder.

Andre Silva would be an unnecessary Southampton signing

[ad_pod ]According to Calciomercato, Southampton have made a bid for AC Milan striker Andre Silva, although chances of a deal being made have since been dismissed by a journalist close to the club.

What’s the deal, then?

It was reported that a loan offer with an option to buy for €18m (£16.1m) was submitted by Saints but that the Serie A side deemed it too low.

Calcio Mercato have said that the seven-time European champions were not willing to entertain a fee any lower than €25m (£22.4m).

However, journalist Adam Blackmore, who is close to all the goings on at St Mary’s, took to Twitter to categorically deny any bid had been made and rule out the possibility of the south coast club even trying:

Silva is a completely unnecessary addition

Southampton are right not to be interested in the 23-year-old, who spent last season on loan at Sevilla, as he is not needed at St Mary’s as things stand.

The Portuguese international made the most of that time in Spain by scoring 11 goals in 42 appearances in what was the joint-second best return of his career to date.

However, the south coast side have already been extremely active in the summer window, signing Danny Ings permanently for £20m as well as two more forwards in Moussa Djenepo and Che Adams.

With the money they’ve spent, the sensible move now by boss Ralph Hasenhuttl would be to try and claw back some of the money they have invested.

When it comes to whether or not to try and push the boat out for Silva, the Austrian needs to take into account just how many attacking options he already has.

Sofiane Boufal, Charlie Austin, Shane Long, Nathan Redmond, Guido Carillo and Mohamed Elyounoussi are all at his disposal before you even consider their summer arrivals.

Southampton’s new man Moussa Djenepo divides opinion amongst fans in the video below…

It is reported that Crystal Palace are interested in Austin and that Marseille are in for Boufal, which could potentially free up room for Silva.

But realistically Hasenhuttl has already recruited two new forwards – three if you count Ings – and any more wholesale changes could leave one of Adams, Ings or Silva out of the starting XI.

Clearly the chance to pinch one of Milan’s promising talents would be a statement buy from Southampton.

But they have done their business, and now is the time to count their chickens and prepare for what is to come.

Celtic face battle to land Jack Stacey

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Celtic are interested in signing Luton Town full-back Jack Stacey this summer, but now face competition for his signature from English Premier League side Bournemouth, according to The Daily Mail.

What’s the story?

Stacey was key man for the English Championship club last season, making 45 appearances in League One and directly contributing to 12 goals as they won the division and gained automatic promotion.

With the 23-year-old’s contract expiring next year, there now appears to be an opportunity to land a good value deal for the player, with the paper reporting that Bournemouth and Celtic are both in the hunt.

Celtic fans aren’t happy about Arsenal’s bid for one of their key players…

How badly do Celtic need a right-back?

The Hoops have already made three summer signings so far, but none of them have come in their most depleted area of the squad.

Christopher Jullien has arrived to compete in the centre of defence, with Luca Connell also joining to add competition to the midfield.

The club announced Boli Bolingoli-Mbombo as their latest signing on Thursday evening, who will provide much-needed back-up for Kieran Tierney, also protecting against the potential sale of the Scotland international.

Celtic have lost Mikael Lustig, Cristian Gamboa and Jeremy Toljan at right-back though and they must turn their priorities to that position, with just the inexperienced Anthony Ralston currently available.

Some ex-Celts, such as Jackie McNamara, are unimpressed with that option and with Europa League qualifiers less than a week away, the Hoops need a viable right-back in the door, whether that’s Stacey or not.

The deadline for adding a player to the squad for the first round against FK Sarajevo is 11pm on Thursday, with the option to add two wildcard options by Monday July 8 at 11pm.

The Bhoys simply cannot enter the season with just one extremely inexperienced right-back, which makes their pursuit of Stacey or a similar player absolutely crucial over the coming days and weeks.
