Masood makes no excuses for Pakistan's inexcusable performances

Test captain says the players need to play more red-ball cricket to improve in Tests

The anatomy of Pakistan’s fall in Tests

Pakistan’s performances in the Test series against Bangladesh have been difficult to justify, and their captain Shan Masood made little attempt to do so. Following the shock 2-0 defeat at home, he called for long-term solutions beyond superficial changes, emphasised the need for Pakistan to play more red-ball and Test cricket, and admitted his side tended to “keep making the same mistakes”.”In the batting department, and not just in this series, we need to improve in the second innings,” Masood said. “We tend to collapse quite frequently. We did well in each first innings, losing both tosses when there was weather around. We scored 448 and declared, and then 274, and when we reduced them to 26 for 6, that was a reflection of the pitch. That was the pitch we batted on and scored 274. We started well with ball and bat, but over four or five days, you need to be mentally tough throughout to make it count.”Pakistan’s tendency to fall apart as games go deep isn’t just a problem for Masood’s tenure, but it has been amplified over the last five Tests. In Melbourne and Sydney, Pakistan got themselves into promising positions before letting the game get out of hand, and let slip situations from where Bangladesh needed to break records to recover. The first Test in Rawalpindi was just the third time in history that a side declaring their first innings with six or fewer wickets down went on to lose, and Bangladesh’s 262 in the second Test is the highest total for a team that lost its first six wickets under 50 runs. Those Bangladesh recoveries, aided by Pakistan sustaining injuries to key bowlers and misfiring with the bat, led to the 2-0 result scarcely anyone predicted.Related

Pakistan's house of horrors grows bigger with series loss to Bangladesh

Litton toasts 'big achievement for Bangladesh cricket'; Mehidy dedicates win to student protestors

Masood praised Bangladesh’s “discipline”, and said their Test experience demonstrated the value of regular red-ball cricket.”Bangladesh have two players who have played 70-90 Tests (Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahman), and Litton [Das] and Mehidy [Hasan Miraz] have played close to 40. We need the same level of red-ball exposure. Test cricket is the ultimate format of the game. You need experience. It’s obvious we need more Test and red-ball cricket. Whatever format you play is the format for which you’ll produce players. You can’t play more T20 cricket and get Test players. You can’t prepare for science and then sit a maths exam. If you’re being tested for maths, you study maths. To play red-ball cricket, you must play red-ball cricket.”We have to respect the opposition and Bangladesh’s discipline was superior to ours in both Tests. We have to look at ourselves and the kinds of mistakes we made this series, and we made plenty. Test cricket, in terms of fitness, whether mental or physical, lasts for four or five days. What we’ve shown this series is that’s something we need to work on.”With more Test cricket coming up, Pakistan’s players have virtually no avenue to prepare by playing red-ball cricket. Most of this squad will play the 50-over version of the newly created Champions Cup from September 12 to 29, before launching almost immediately into a three-Test series at home against England. With the Quaid-e-Azam trophy, Pakistan’s premier first-class tournament, coinciding with that series, the problems of limited red-ball cricket are unlikely to be alleviated soon. The issue of player fitness has constantly weighed on Masood and the team management, with Pakistan attributing to it some of their more contentious selection decisions. Masood said last week that the extra seamer at the cost of a spinner for the first Test was to distribute the workload more lightly among four pace bowlers. For the second Test, both leading fast bowlers Shaheen Afridi and Naseem Shah were rested, and Pakistan’s three-pronged pace attack was notably bereft of pace in comparison to Bangladesh’s.Both Shaheen Shah Afridi and Naseem Shah were rested for the second Test•AFP/Getty Images

Masood admitted Pakistan might have been better served not resting the duo collectively. “We kept Naseem in the 12, because we might have had to play four fast bowlers, which we could have done considering the load this weather might put on the bowlers. But we chose to go with Mir Hamza for the left-arm angle we were missing with Shaheen so a lot of thought went into it. Never easy resting your two premier bowlers.”If I could do it again, maybe we would have split Naseem and Shaheen between the two Tests. You have to be fair to them. Shaheen has played a lot of cricket in the last two years. Naseem has just come back from injury; his last Test was against New Zealand in Karachi. You have to look at the overall health of players; we have lots of cricket coming up and you have to look at the whole picture.”Masood has been in Pakistan cricket long enough to know its administrators and selectors aren’t known for patience; his staccato career – 35 Tests in 11 years – exemplifies this. Appointed just five Tests ago, he may still be a new captain, but he knows he wasn’t the obvious choice at the time, and is playing to prove his place in the side as much as his leadership credentials. Having become the first Pakistan captain to lose his first five Tests, and averaging 28.60 in ten innings, he understands how quickly the walls can close in.”I am not worried for my job security,” he said. “I took this job to make the changes we believe will help this team. If I believe this team can go in a certain direction, even if my personal failure takes Pakistan to that direction, I will be content. However much time I get I’ll be grateful for and do my best.”At the moment, Pakistan have the worst of both worlds, with neither Masood nor his team able to find results that offer breathing space. After the next home series against England, Pakistan travel to South Africa, and they are currently eighth out of nine in the World Test Championship table.Masood drew hope from the positions Pakistan got themselves into, pointing to four of the five Tests played under his captaincy. “If you do something good once, it’s an encouraging sign, and then you try and repeat it. We took time to adjust in Perth, but after that, in Melbourne, Sydney, both Pindi Tests, the game was in our hands and then we let go of it. This is something we have to work on.”From encouraging signs, it’s turning into something we’re not good at and need to improve. When you back an opposition into a corner, you need to be clinical in putting that side away. Whether it’s Australia or Bangladesh, the answer as to what mistakes we’re making is the same.”

Wicketkeeper-batter leaves Warwickshire in pursuit of opportunities across formats

Kent have signed wicketkeeper-batter Chris Benjamin from Warwickshire on a three-year contract.Benjamin, 25, made headlines when drafted as a replacement player during the 2021 Hundred, having only played one senior T20 for Birmingham Bears. He scored 24 off 15 balls to see Birmingham Phoenix over the line and went on to feature regularly over the tournament’s first three seasons.Benjamin also scored a century on first-class debut for Warwickshire but had limited opportunities in the longer format, making 10 appearances for the county and averaging 22.23.His arrival will strengthen Kent’s options in the wicketkeeping department, with Ollie Robinson and Jordan Cox having left over the last two seasons, and Sam Billings signing a white-ball contract. The club’s keeper in Championship cricket this summer has been Harry Finch.”We’re delighted to have attracted a player of Chris’ talent to Kent on a long-term contract,” Kent’s director of cricket, Simon Cook, said. “He is still a young player with a lot of potential to improve further, and we’re pleased to Kent to be the place for him to do so.”Although Benjamin was born in South Africa, he is a British passport holder through his father and has played in the UK since moving to study in 2018.”I’m excited to be joining Kent and having the opportunity to play regularly across multiple formats,” Benjamin said. “There is a young squad here that will only improve over time, and there’s a clear plan for Kent to return to the highs of their recent successes in the future. It’s an exciting project to be a part of.”Kent were relegated in the County Championship earlier this month, ultimately ending up bottom of Division One. They also finished last in the South Group of the Vitality Blast and seventh in Group A of the Metro Bank One-Day Cup.

Sunderland ready new bid to sign 32 y/o international open to SoL transfer

A new update has claimed that Sunderland are now thought to be planning a new offer for a player who has been praised for having a “big heart”.

Adingra wants to "achieve greatness" at Sunderland

The Black Cats have completed their latest piece of transfer business this summer, with Brighton winger Simon Adringra arriving at the Stadium of Light.

The 23-year-old has spoken of his excitement about the move, with Manchester United’s Amad Diallo talking Sunderland up after his loan spell there.

“I spoke to the gaffer and the owner, and they showed me interest, so I decided to come and be part of the project. The Premier League was my dream since I was a kid – I am living my dream. Today, I’m here in Sunderland. It’s a big challenge to face big teams and players, and it’s a great league. I’m about dribbling, speed, scoring goals and getting assists.

“I know Amad very well from the national team and he told me how big this club is. Now, I’m looking forward to getting to know my teammates and getting started. It’s a pleasure to be here and I can’t wait to get started – I hope we achieve greatness together.”

Sunderland will still be looking to complete further signings before the window slams shut on September 1st, however, and a new update has now emerged regarding a primary summer target.

Sunderland planning new bid for international star

According to Sky Sports Germany, Sunderland are now set to submit a new offer for Xhaka, who finds a move to the Stadium of Light appealing.

The Black Cats’ opening bid for the 32-year-old was rejected, but the Premier League newcomers’ interest hasn’t gone away, with Fenerbahce also mentioned as an option in the report. Meanwhile, Leverkusen would like to keep hold of him.

Since then, David Ornstein has added that the Black Cats have an agreement with Xhaka, who only wants to move to the north East. Xhaka would be a signing of such intent by Sunderland this summer, so it is extremely encouraging that they are continuing to pursue a move for him.

The former Arsenal man has been a key player for Bayer Leverkusen, winning the Bundesliga title in 2023/24 and being hailed by ex-boss Xabi Alonso for the “big heart” that he possesses. The Swiss also has quality on the ball, though, with Joe Cole an admirer of his.

“He’s a good finisher, he’s a lovely technician. We’ve seen him score some worldies in his career. He’s a leader in the dressing room, he’s so important for the team.”

The experience that Xhaka would add to Sunderland’s team would be invaluable, considering he has won an incredible number of caps for Switzerland, and while his very best days may soon be behind him, there is no reason why he couldn’t enjoy two or three excellent years in a Black Cats shirt.

Swepson to captain Queensland in Labuschagne's absence

Swepson will captain in both the One-Day Cup and Sheffield Shield when Labuschagne is on international duty

Legspinner Mitchell Swepson has been named Queensland official vice-captain and will lead the side in both the both the One-Day Cup and the Sheffield Shield when captain Marnus Labuschagne is absent on international duty. The decision to elevate Swepson to the leadership role continues the significant shake-up in Queensland cricket under new coach Johan Botha and high performance manager Joe Dawes.Labuschagne was appointed as the permanent Queensland captain in all forms, replacing long-term captain Usman Khawaja, despite also being set to play very few games across the summer due to being a first-choice player in Australia’s Test side and the ODI side.Related

Johan Botha appointed new Brisbane Heat and Queensland coach

Wicketkeeper Jimmy Peirson had long-been a reliable deputy and automatic stand-in skipper for Queensland in all forms when Khawaja was absent. But Botha has decided to elevate Swepson to the role after leading the side in a few pre-season games.”We had quite a bit of leadership chat in the winter, and him [Swepson] and Jimmy were excellent with all of that and the way the group saw them,” Botha told ESPNcricinfo. “I think that’s a big thing as a leader, the group really would play for them and like what they see. And that’s certainly the way we thought about it. We know that Jimmy can do it. He’s still going to be the same Jimmy and the same on and off the field. So we just felt we want to develop another leader.”Swepson will lead the side for the first time in Queensland’s opening One-Day match of the season on Wednesday when they face Tasmania on neutral territory at the Junction Oval in Melbourne, before playing Victoria on Friday. Khawaja will miss the match against Tasmania but will play against Victoria on Friday. Peirson has not been selected in the Bulls’ 13-man squad for the two matches in Melbourne. Ben McDermott will keep for the Bulls.Michael Neser has recovered from his calf niggle and is set to play both matches but Gurinder Sandhu has been ruled out with a calf issue of his own. Xavier Bartlett remains unavailable due to the side strain he suffered during Australia’s tour of UK.Swepson has been Queensland’s first-choice Shield spinner for years, which has forced Matthew Kuhnemann to move to Tasmania, but he has only played one 50-over game for the Bulls since November 2022 and only six in total since he played three ODIs for Australia in Pakistan and Sri Lanka earlier that year. But Botha, who captained South Africa in white-ball cricket and South Australia in all forms as a spinner, believes Swepson’s challenge as a spin-bowling captain will come in Shield cricket rather than the shorter format.”I think in one-day cricket it’s easier to captain as a spinner, because the game sort of tells you when to bowl,” Botha said. “But in four-day cricket, is he going to be brave enough to bowl the 17th over of the Shield game on day one? But that’s what we’ll keep pushing him towards to get himself into the game. We trust him as a staff and a group, and he just needs to trust himself.”Mitchell Swepson played four Tests in Pakistan and Sri Lanka in 2022•AFP

Swepson, like Kuhnemann, is pushing to win a place on Australia’s Test two-tour of Sri Lanka in late January. Swepson played the last of his four Tests in Sri Lanka in 2022 when he was Australia’s second spinner but missed out on selection during last year’s tour of India despite being in the touring party, as Australia opted to play three finger spinners in Kuhnemann, Nathan Lyon and Todd Murphy in the same side. Murphy usurped him as the first-choice back-up for Lyon on the Ashes tour later the same year.Botha has been really impressed with Swepson’s bowling during his first pre-season in charge of the Bulls. The coach is hoping to use Swepson more aggressively this year, even in seam-friendly conditions at the Gabba.”I’ve been really impressed with him,” Botha said. “His control for a legspinner has been excellent, and you can see why he has played Test cricket in the past. He got 30 wickets last year. So we’re hoping for more of that this summer, and I think in our team we certainly want to use the spinners more and better and earlier in games, and not just the old whole way of sort of an over before lunch, an over before tea and then quite a bit in the last session.”I think the way he’s bowling at the moment, and our mindset around it is to get him to bowl earlier and to bowl more in a day to help our quicks out. That’s certainly the way we want him to play, and I think he will appreciate that backing.”

Even better than Maeda: Celtic pursuing deal for "magnificent" £15m star

Celtic have already lost one of their best players during the summer transfer window, as Nicolas Kuhn recently completed a permanent move to Italian side Como.

The Scottish Premiership champions reportedly raked in an initial fee of £16.5m for the German winger, who joined the club from Rapid Vienna at the start of 2024.

Kuhn scored 24 goals and provided 18 assists in 69 appearances for the Hoops in all competitions during his 18-month stay in Glasgow, which shows that Brendan Rodgers has lost a huge attacking talent from his squad.

The left-footed winger may not be the last star player to move on from Parkhead before the end of the window, though, as Daizen Maeda has also been linked with an exit.

Celtic star Daizen Maeda.

TEAMtalk claims that Tottenham Hotspur, Everton, West Ham United, and Brentford are all keen on the forward, who is valued at £25m by the Hoops.

It now remains to be seen, though, whether or not any of those Premier League clubs are willing to stump up the cash required to sign the Japan international this summer.

Why selling Maeda would be a big loss for Celtic

Losing Maeda would be a big blow for Celtic and Rodgers because they would be losing a player who delivered outstanding performances in the 2024/25 campaign.

The 27-year-old attacker, as shown by the post above, won the Player of the Year award in the Scottish Premiership, which speaks to how highly he is valued in Scotland.

Maeda earned that award by delivering goals and assists on a regular basis in the division, whilst playing on the left and through the middle as a striker, which was a far cry from what he produced in the 2023/24 campaign in Rodgers’ first season back at the club.

As you can see in the table above, the Japanese attacker’s output as both a scorer and a creator of goals soared last term, scoring ten more goals and providing seven more assists.

He went from underperforming his xG by over two goals to overperforming his xG by over three goals, which speaks to his development at Parkhead and why it would be such a blow to lose him this summer.

However, Celtic have been replacing their best players, like Virgil van Dijk, Matt O’Riley, Odsonne Edouard and others, for many years, and they are reportedly eyeing a forward who could be even better than Maeda.

Celtic have had bid rejected for a striker

According to iAM Sports, Celtic are pursuing a deal to sign CFR Cluj centre-forward Louis Munteanu, as they look to bolster their options at the top end of the pitch.

The report claims that the Hoops have already made an offer to the Romanian side for the 22-year-old striker, worth around £7m, but their bid was turned down.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

It adds that CFR Cluj owner Ioan Varga rejected the offer from the Scottish giants because he is currently holding out for a fee closer to £15m for the impressive young forward.

The outlet states that Rennes, Nice, and Lille are also interested in signing the Romania U21 international, but it remains to be seen whether or not they are prepared to pay the £15m that CFR Cluj are demanding for his services.

Celtic may be hoping that those clubs are not willing to pay that price and that Varga decides to lower the valuation later in the window, which could then present the Hoops with an opportunity to go back in for him again.

Why Celtic should sign Louis Munteanu

If CFR Cluj lower his valuation to an attainable figure for the Scottish giants, Munteanu could be an excellent signing for Celtic as a replacement for Maeda, should the Japanese star move on from Parkhead this summer.

Celtic, as aforementioned, would lose a lot of goals from the team if a Premier League club signs the Japan international, but the CFR Cluj centre-forward would make up for that with the goals that he could provide.

In the 2024/25 campaign, Munteanu scored an impressive 25 goals in all competitions for his club, whilst he has also scored six goals in 20 caps for his country at U21 level.

Talent scout Jacek Kulig described the former Fiorentina youngster’s season as “magnificent”, and it is hard to disagree with that claim when you look at his statistics at league level, which suggest that he could be even better than Maeda as a goalscorer for Rodgers.

As you can see in the table above, the 22-year-old attacker scored seven more goals, whilst missing fewer ‘big chances’, than Maeda at league level last term, and only created seven fewer ‘big chances’.

This suggests that, if Munteanu can adapt to the Premiership, the Romanian marksman could come in as an even better forward option for Celtic because of his ability to find the back of the net on a regular basis, whilst also being able to create opportunities for his teammates.

Celtic managerBrendanRodgerscelebrates after winning the League Cup

At the age of 22, the £15m-rated striker is also five years younger than Maeda and, therefore, has more time left ahead of him to develop and improve even further, to be an even bigger upgrade on the Japanese ace in the future.

This is why the Scottish giants should swoop to sign the CFR Cluj star, should a deal become viable this summer, as a potential replacement for Maeda, as he could be even better at the top end of the pitch for Celtic with his ability to score and create goals.

Andrew McDonald handed contract extension as Australia men's head coach until 2027

The new deal covers the next ODI World Cup as well as away Test series in India and England

Australia head coach Andrew McDonald has had his contract extended until the end of 2027 meaning he will guide the team’s defence of their ODI World Cup title that year as well as throughout next cycle of the World Test Championship. When McDonald was initially appointed in 2022 it was on a four-year deal which took him to midway through 2026. That would have seen him finish after the next T20 World Cup. He had stated that he was likely to be a one-term coach citing the demanding nature of the job and the fact that Justin Langer had only served one four-year term, despite Langer wanting an extension back in 2022.However, if McDonald had walked away in mid-2026, a new coach would have come in at an awkward time. Australia’s 2027 schedule looks like one of the heaviest calendar years the men’s team will have ever had. They host four Tests with New Zealand in December and January of 2026-27 before playing five Tests in India in January and February. Then they return home for a one-off Test against England in March to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Test cricket, with a two-Test home series against Bangladesh also scheduled but likely to be moved.Related

Cricket Australia looks to unify approach to managing quicks

There will then be a WTC final, if they qualify, followed by a five-Test Ashes tour. The next ODI World Cup then takes place in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia during October and November 2027.Keeping McDonald in place for that period means CA has some stability to plan for the extensive schedule. McDonald has an established coaching group around him, including Michael Di Venuto, Daniel Vettori and Andre Borovec, and will add a national pace bowling coach soon. McDonald’s three assistants have each coached the team for different white-ball series in the last two years in order to share the load. McDonald is hopeful those three assistants will get contract extensions until 2027 as well.”Those people are incredibly important to the team and myself,” McDonald said. “So the idea would be to continue to surround myself with those people, and I think they’ve got an appetite to continue on. So I’m hoping that news will hopefully follow this news and they’ll be on the journey long term.”Test and ODI captain Pat Cummins has recently suggested he would be open to remaining in his role for longer than may have first been planned, meaning he and McDonald could continue to work together until 2027 having developed a very close working relationship over the past three years.”I am very fortunate to have an exceptional group of leaders, players, coaches and staff who are fully invested in the ongoing well-being, success and development of this group,” McDonald said. “The professionalism, commitment and experience of my fellow coaches and the wider staff have ensured the journey has been extremely successful but just as importantly created a culture of unity, trust and inclusivity.”International cricket has many challenges for all teams and I am particularly proud how the group, players and staff, across all formats have navigated those together.”McDonald took over in the head coach role after the ugly departure of Langer in early 2022 and has guided the men’s team to significant success including the 2023 ODI World Cup and World Test Championship titles. The extension means he will have the opportunity for Test series wins in India and England which have recently eluded the side.Australia are currently in a race to qualify for next year’s WTC final at Lord’s in a bid to defend that title with the upcoming India series vital to their prospects.Nick Hockley, the Cricket Australia CEO, said: “Andrew has proven to be an outstanding men’s head coach who as well as delivering exceptional results has built a strong coaching team, methodology and an excellent environment for the team to perform at its best. We are delighted to extend his tenure for a further two years.”

Bad news for Bruno: Man Utd preparing huge bid for "incredible" £60m star

There’s no denying that the 2024/25 campaign was one to forget for Manchester United, needing to erase such a year from their memory if they’re to be a success next season.

The Red Devils only registered a measly 15th-placed Premier League finish, whilst also being on the losing end in the Europa League final against fellow English side Tottenham Hotspur.

Ruben Amorim was ultimately unable to have the desired impact after taking the reins halfway through the campaign, undoubtedly hoping to make amends in 2025/26.

The 40-year-old has finally had the pre-season he desired to get his feet under the table and make the changes he needs to allow his players to operate in his 3-4-2-1 system.

Despite already splashing over £130m on new additions this summer, the hierarchy look set to back the manager once again in his quest for success in England’s top-flight.

The latest on United’s hunt for new additions this summer

Benjamin Sesko has undoubtedly been the biggest star linked in recent weeks, with the Red Devils battling Newcastle United for the RB Leipzig striker’s signature this window.

The Slovenian has already been subject to an offer from the Magpies, with United needing to act quickly if they are to secure a deal for the 22-year-old before the September 1st deadline.

However, despite the interest in the forward, other options are also being considered across the pitch, with Barcelona star Fermin Lopez the latest on their radar, according to Spanish outlet Sport.

They claim that Amorim’s side are preparing a €70m (£60m) offer for the 22-year-old central midfielder, after he made 46 appearances across all competitions last season.

The report also states that the LaLiga outfit would be open to allowing him to depart before the end of the window, if an offer in that region is submitted in the coming weeks.

Why United’s latest target could spell bad news for Bruno

Bruno Fernandes has been a player constantly providing the goods for United in recent years, scoring 98 times and notching 83 assists in his 290 appearances for the Red Devils.

Such numbers have saved the side in key moments, especially last season, with his tally of 37 goal contributions undoubtedly preventing the side from a relegation battle in the Premier League.

However, despite his contributions, he could find himself dropping down the pecking order in 2025/26, with Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha already being signed to operate in the number ten role.

Bruno has regularly operated in such a position over recent times, potentially having to drop into a deeper role as a result of the pair’s big-money arrivals at Old Trafford.

The likes of Casemiro, Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte all currently occupy such roles, with the potential arrival of Lopez adding further depth to the midfield department.

There’s no doubt that if the Spaniard moved to the Theatre of Dreams it would put Fernandes’ spot in the side at risk, especially when considering the phenomenal numbers the Barça star produced in 2024/25.

Lopez, who’s been labelled “incredible” by talent scout Jacek Kulig, registered 11 combined goals and assists, highlighting the attacking threat he possesses from his deep-lying role.

He also completed 5.7 progressive passes per 90, 4.7 of which were into the final third, handing the new additions the chance to thrive within attacking areas in their first season at the club.

The youngster’s talents are further reflected out of possession, winning 1.4 tackles per 90 and 4.7 recoveries per 90, offering Amorim the defensive presence he may need in the middle of the park.

£60m could be an expensive addition, but given Lopez’s all-round talents, he could prove to be an exceptional addition for United in their attempts to rise up the table.

At just 22, he has plenty of time to build on his early success in his career, potentially putting Bruno’s long-standing presence within the side at huge risk.
