Evans continued on his merry way until holing out in the penultimate over where he walked waving his bat to a standing ovation from his ever-growing legion of fans.The jubilant Scorchers faithful were in a mood for celebration, but the night ended in despair and unfamiliar heartbreak for them.

Contratado em 2021 para reforçar a equipe Sub-20, Matheus Dias foi conquistando seu espaço e terminou o ano como um dos pilares da equipe campeã do Campeonato Brasileiro, Gaúcho e da Supercopa, marcando o gol do Colorado no segundo jogo da final do Brasileirão, também no Morumbi.

Em 2022, iniciou o ano já integrado aos profissionais, sendo apenas pontualmente nome a reforçar o Sub-20. Após atuar em dois jogos pelo time principal, o meio-campista diz que foi uma temporada de muito aprendizado:

On Friday, alongside Will Young, who scored 60 not out, Williamson put on an unbroken 152-run stand for the fourth wicket to take New Zealand home with seven wickets in hand.It was a classic Williamson innings, where he was challenged by the variable bounce and turn on the surface, but remained unfazed and went about his business calmly.Resuming the day at 40 for 1, New Zealand’s focus was on getting through the early exchanges without much damage, but they lost Tom Latham early, Dane Piedt getting his second for the innings and his seventh for the game. O mesmo sentimento vale para Danilo. Por mais que se busque um substituto, dificilmente será encontrado um jogador do mesmo nível e que se encaixe perfeitamente nesse esquema vencedor que vem desde 2020. É um garoto diferenciado, raro no mercado. Novamente, o jeito será criar alternativas para suprir a ausência, seja com reforços, seja com os famosos planos de Abel Ferreira.

Todos os movimentos do departamento de futebol para esta temporada apontam para essa aposta na capacidade de Abel. Não é à toa, ele já mostrou que é um profissional competente e que apresenta resultados, mas não deixa de ser curiosa essa centralização das expectativas.

Claro, não podemos nos esquecer que o clube renovou o contrato de quase todos os titulares, que tiveram suas permanências garantidas por, pelo menos, mais duas temporadas. No entanto, a aposta também está aí, quando se acredita ser possível manter um grupo motivado e competitivo para buscar novas conquistas mesmo sem trazer reforços. A crença é que Abel promova tudo isso.

Talvez por tudo o que essa equipe já ganhou e já mostrou, a temporada de 2023 seja mesmo uma espécie de entressafra. Ou seja, mesmo que não conquiste títulos, a ideia é que se tenha a noção que o trabalho permanece sendo feito, e essa etapa é uma transição para a montagem de uma nova cara para o time, principalmente com os novos garotos da base subindo. Não deixa de ser uma prova de fogo, até para sentir o quanto a torcida entenderá o momento e confiará em Abel Ferreira.

A verdade é que qualquer equipe que perca jogadores de alto nível como Danilo e Gustavo Scarpa, sentirá falta e terá dificuldade para se adaptar à nova realidade. Isso evidentemente vai acontecer com o Palmeiras, que tem o trunfo de contar com Abel Ferreira, melhor técnico em atividade no país e há mais de dois anos no cargo. A aposta é alta, mas cai no colo de quem pode sustentá-la.

PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi has defended his decision to have Pakistan’s players train with the military during the last few days of Ramzan, rejecting the claim the camp had anything to do with several players pulling up with muscle injuries.In the weeks that followed the squad’s training camp at Kakul, Pakistan’s most famous military training academy, Azam Khan, Mohammad Rizwan and Irfan Niazi all had their participation in the recently concluded home series against New Zealand curtailed. Azam was ruled out with a calf injury before the start of the series, while Rizwan and Niazi were sidelined with hamstring injuries after the third T20I.Naqvi bemoaned Pakistan players’ fitness as being “far behind” its peer nations. “Injuries never occur due to fitness training,” he said at the press conference the PCB had organised to announce Pakistan’s new head coaches. “People have got various theories around how to make players fit. Fitness has never been a focus of Pakistan managements in the past.”I am not criticising anyone that came before me but look at players from the rest of the world. Pakistan players’ fitness is well below that. This is just the start, we will have to ramp up player fitness even more. If I need to bring in fitness experts from around the world, I will.”Azhar Mahmood, who had coached Pakistan against New Zealand, and has now been appointed all-format assistant coach, said the injuries to those players took place while playing cricket. “Kakul training had nothing to do with cricket,” he said. “The injury the players sustained happened [while] playing cricket, and the training had to do with physical fitness. I have asked the board to make a plan that gets every player’s fitness up to speed. You’ll have to make a proper effort for that.”An intensive training regimen just a week after the PSL ended in the only window of what would otherwise have been rest did raise eyebrows. Naqvi acknowledged at the time there were very limited opportunities for such a camp, with Pakistan going into it on the back of six months of virtually non-stop cricket. Moreover, the camp coincided with the last phase of Ramzan, a time when most Pakistanis culturally tend to prioritise family or religious activities over work. Its effectiveness was made more challenging by the fact several of the squad players were fasting, with no food or water from sunrise to sunset, unconducive to a rigorous boot camp.There is, though, precedent for Pakistan cricket getting the military involved with training. Misbah-ul-Haq’s Pakistan famously organised a training camp with the military at Kakul academy before a Test series to England.When Misbah scored a hundred in the first Test, he celebrated by doing ten push-ups, followed by a military salute. The series was drawn 2-2, with Pakistan rising to the top of the Test rankings for the only time in their history.
