West Ham ready to make summer move for £83m star with "sky high potential"

West Ham United are now ready to make a summer move for an £83m star who has “sky high potential”, according to a report.

Hammers eyeing a midfielder

The Hammers have set their sights on signing a new midfielder this summer, with Graham Potter identifying the need to strengthen the spine of his team if his side are going to compete for Europe once again.

Marco Verratti is the central midfielder most recently linked with a surprise move to the London Stadium, with a report revealing West Ham are considering a summer approach for the former Paris Saint-Germain man.

Lille’s Angel Gomes is another player on the Irons’ shortlist, with the 24-year-old’s contract set to expire at the end of the season, although they may have to compete for his signature with London rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

Gomes is not the only player the Hammers and Spurs have a shared interest in, with a report from Caught Offside revealing the Premier League duo are closely monitoring Palmeiras’ Richard Rios, alongside Nottingham Forest.

West Ham think they'll regret not agreeing deal for this striker in January

The Hammers are already ruing a missed opportunity.

ByEmilio Galantini Feb 8, 2025

Tottenham are said to be leading the charge for Rios, but West Ham are also ready to make a move in the summer, although he is unlikely to come cheap.

Palmeiras are said to be holding out for the Colombian’s full release clause of €100m (£83m), which none of the potential suitors are willing to pay, although it remains to be seen whether they soften their stance over the next few months.

If the Brazilian club are unwilling to lower their demands, other methods of getting a deal done could be utilised, potentially including players plus cash.

Rios has "sky high potential"

Back in the summer, freelance scout Ben Mattinson indicated the central midfielder could be capable of making the step up to a big club one day, if he develops his game.

Since then, the Palmeiras star has certainly continued to impress, establishing himself as a key player for the Brazilian side and weighing in with three goals and four assists in the Brazilian Serie A’s 2024 season.

However, given that he is unproven outside of Brazil, Rios has not yet justified a £83m outlay, so West Ham should only consider pursuing a move if Palmeiras drop their asking price.

Melbourne Renegades aware of Harmanpreet's workload but hopeful of only brief absence

Coach Simon Helmot confident she will be available for their third game in Adelaide despite busy schedule

India captain Harmanpreet Kaur will miss Melbourne Renegades opening two WBBL matches in Mackay but coach Simon Helmot is confident last year’s player of the tournament will be available for their third match in Adelaide despite a heavy workload at the Asia Cup.Harmanpreet will captain India in the women’s Asia Cup final on Saturday in Sylhet just 24 hours before Renegades open their WBBL campaign against Adelaide Strikers in north Queensland.Workloads have become a major issue for the elite female players this year with Smriti Mandhana withdrawing from the WBBL while Australia captain Meg Lanning is on an indefinite break from the game.Harmanpreet has played 16 T20Is and six ODIs for India since late June including tours to Sri Lanka, England, which included the Commonwealth Games, and the Asia Cup in Bangladesh. She also played in the ODI World Cup earlier this year in New Zealand during February and March.Helmot was confident she will be fine to join the Renegades after the Asia Cup final for the full WBBL but he said they would carefully monitor her workloads when she arrives in Australia.”Obviously, she’s heavy into the Asia Cup at the moment so hopefully as soon as that finishes she can jump on a plane and come and join us up in Mackay or in fact, in Adelaide,” Helmot told ESPNcricinfo. “So that’s when we expect her. I’m expecting her to miss the first two matches, and then we’ll have to check how she’s feeling and how she’s going.”She’s played a heck of a lot of cricket recently. But having had a few messages over WhatsApp with her in recent times she’s really excited about coming back. She had an awesome time [last season]. She was player of the series and she was such an important player, not just runs but 15 wickets as well, and her support and leadership for Soph [Molineux].”Related

BCCI set to launch five-team women's IPL in March 2023

WBBL warned not to be complacent as T20 leagues grow

Smriti Mandhana: 'I'll be thinking about pulling out of WBBL'

Workloads have become a major topic of conversation among the senior players in the women’s game with the rise of T20 domestic leagues on top of a burgeoning international schedule that is set to get busier over the coming years under the new women’s Future Tours Programme. A women’s IPL is also set to be launched next year. The WBBL runs over six weeks and is a full 14-game tournament plus finals. There is more travel involved for all the teams this season than the last two with Covid bubbles and hubs a thing of the past.Helmot is acutely aware of workload management having spent more than a decade travelling on the men’s international T20 circuit. He has coached in both the IPL and CPL this year alone. He is keen to have the Renegades’ female players take control of their own preparation to ensure they stay physically and mentally fresh.”I don’t know all the answers,” Helmot said. “But what I do know is that for the Melbourne Renegades, every single training from today onwards is optional. Most of these girls are still going to want to train. In fact, there’s times where I’ll need to suggest or recommend or enforce that they’re not training. And that’s hard.”Some have had a heavy workload coming into this competition. And so we will be careful in how much we train and what training looks like and the intensity because the most important thing is the 14 matches. I think now the players can make more decisions for themselves.”

Anrich Nortje not getting carried away by the pace in Perth

“We see ourselves as one of the best pace attacks there is,” says SA seamer ahead of the India clash in Perth

Tristan Lavalette29-Oct-20222:25

Nortje: ‘We cover a lot of bases with our attack’

Even though Optus Stadium’s green-tinged surface conjures pace and sharp bounce, characteristics that are well suited to them, South Africa’s speedsters have been urged to be restrained as they contemplate loading up with four quicks against India in a blockbuster T20 World Cup clash.Apart from a stunning onslaught against Sri Lanka from Australia allrounder Marcus Stoinis, a local Perth lad, seam bowling has dominated the tournament’s previous three matches at the 60,000-seat stadium.Quicks Mark Wood and Haris Rauf have lit up the pitch with rapid bowling, clocking over 150kmph/93mph, while the powerplay has been marked by menacing swing making batting quite difficult amid fairly low-scoring games.Related

Bowling riches leave South Africa with good headache ahead of T20 World Cup

Rossouw ton, Nortje four-for help South Africa demolish Bangladesh

While it’s tempting to unleash all-out fury, bowling too full or short at the ground is usually an unsuccessful recipe as Pakistan’s quicks found out during the powerplay against Zimbabwe before adjusting.South Africa have taken note. “There’s lots of pace and bounce. We are going to identify what is a good line and length and stick to that,” said quick Anrich Nortje. “Try not to do anything too fancy. Try to stick to our basics…restrict runs as much as possible. As basic as we can be.”Unleashing the short ball, a particular weapon for Nortje who can consistently bowl at 150kph / 93mph, will need to be used appropriately.”Hopefully in the future, we can bowl two bounces an over. But when you’ve got one bouncer, you have to time it properly. Not to get too carried away. Sometimes it can look nice but it’s not effective,” he said, “Try to be calm in situations when adrenaline is flowing.”While Nortje wouldn’t engage in possible selections, South Africa will ponder whether to insert Lungi Ngidi and left-armer Marco Jansen and unveil a four-pronged pace attack.Whether or not they drastically change their attack, having played on the slower SCG pitch in their easy victory over Bangladesh, Nortje believed South Africa were well-equipped across the board.”We see ourselves as one of the best pace attacks there is, so we’ll back ourselves against any team,” he said, “We’ve got great variety, cover a lot of bases. We’ve got two gun spinners as well.”Inclement weather in Australia’s east coast has caused havoc for the tournament, marked by two washouts in Melbourne on Friday, and more could be ahead. While Perth’s weather has been unpredictable, which is not unusual in October, with bleak clouds hovering over Optus Stadium on Saturday, fine conditions are expected for Sunday’s double-header.With no threat of rain, the stakes have been raised with the winner of India and South Africa on the brink of securing a semi-final berth.”There are possibilities of other games being rained out,” Nortje said. “We can just try and win all of our games and make it easier for ourselves. We can’t bank on other games being rained out.”After an abandoned opener against Zimbabwe, South Africa were left pondering whether their jinx, often due to rain, in major tournaments would continue but a 104-run thrashing of Bangladesh provided a tonic for a team confident of belated silverware.”The guys have been together for such a long time. Everyone knows where they fit in,” Nortje said. “Guys have been really gelling well. Hopefully we can win the cup. I think it’s a really good team.”

He’s outperforming Odegaard & Trossard: Arsenal must rue axing "superstar"

It has felt like Arsenal have simply gone from one problem to another this season.

Mikel Arteta has had to deal with silly suspensions, a constant stream of injuries to key players and a lack of form from his attacking options.

In fact, the only fit attacker who is on song at the moment is 17-year-old Ethan Nwaneri, who’s racked up a brilliant haul of seven goals and one assist in just 790 minutes of first-team football.

In contrast, club captain Martin Odegaard and experienced winger Leandro Trossard have been disappointing and, worse yet, are being outperformed by a Premier League star axed by the club as a youngster.

Odegaard and Trossard's season so far

So, after winning the club’s Player of the Year for the second successive campaign last season, it would be fair to say that there was an expectation that Odegaard would once again be one of Arsenal’s best players this year.

Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard

Unfortunately, as things stand, that is not the case, and while his ankle injury has likely played a role in his lacklustre form, it seems equally unlikely that it’s all down to that.

In all, the Norwegian maestro has scored three goals and provided six assists in 26 games this season, which isn’t enough from the team’s leader, and on top of that, he’s been taken off early in several games when the team have been searching for a goal, such as Everton at home and Newcastle United away.

Like his captain, Trossard has been incredibly underwhelming this season.

For example, the Belgian ace, who racked up 17 goals and two assists in 46 appearances last season, has only been able to score five goals and provide seven assists in 37 appearances this year.

That’s a drop from an average of a goal involvement every 2.42 games to one every 3.08 games, which might not be enormous, but considering how much of the goalscoring burden rests on him for at least the next month, it is concerning.

What makes the pair’s drop-off all the more frustrating is that a player axed from the club’s academy well over a decade ago is now pulling up trees in the Premier League and outperforming them both.

Where Are They Now

The Arsenal youngster sold too soon

Given the size of Arsenal and their impressive academy system, there are several players who they’ve released too soon, from the most well-known, Harry Kane, to his new teammate at Bayern Munich, Micheal Olise.

However, in this instance, the youngster in question is actually the Frenchman’s old teammate, Eberechi Eze.

The dynamic attacker joined the North Londoners’ academy as a child but was released in 2011 at just 13 years old, after which he’d spend the next five years in the academies of Fulham, Reading and Millwall before finally joining Queens Park Rangers in 2016.

Four years after that, with 32 goal involvements in 112 first-team appearances and a loan spell with Wycombe Wanderers under his belt, the young Englishman secured a £20m move to Premier League side Crystal Palace, where he has since cemented his place as one of the most exciting players in the division.

Not only can the “superstar” attacker, as dubbed by football analyst Ben Mattinson, play in midfield and out wide, but he’s also more than capable of chipping in with goals and assists, racking up a total of 32 goals and 23 assists in 150 games for the club.

However, in terms of just this season, he’s already scored six goals and provided six assists in just 26 appearances, totalling 2012 minutes.

That means the former QPR ace is averaging a goal involvement every 2.16 games, or every 167.66 minutes, which is a better rate of return than both Odegaard and Trossard, despite playing a team that’ll likely finish midtable at best.

Ultimately, determining which youngsters are worth investing in is notoriously difficult, so it’s hard to blame Arsenal for missing out on Eze, but we reckon the team’s injury crisis would be a lot more manageable with him in the side.

Liverpool very keen on signing £57m ace highly rated by Arne Slot – report

Liverpool are very keen on signing a “dominant” £57m ace in the summer, according to a new report.

Liverpool transfer news

Arne Slot’s side still have a lot to play for this season, as the Premier League title race begins to heat up and the Champions League knockout rounds get underway. However, as it always does at this time of the year, attention soon starts to turn toward plans for the summer, and Liverpool will be no different.

Liverpool now preparing club record bid to sign new £120k-p/w Nunez upgrade

It would be a massive statement of intent from Slot’s side.

1 ByBen Browning Feb 16, 2025

One player Liverpool are interested in is Dani Vivian from Athletic Club, who continues to impress for club and country. However, Liverpool are not alone in their pursuit of the defender, as Manchester United and Atletico Madrid are also keen on the 25-year-old.

Vivian has a release clause in his contract worth £33m, which could be ideal for Slot and co. as one of their current players is linked with a move away from Anfield.

According to ESPN, Paris Saint-Germain are interested in signing Ibrahima Konate from Liverpool this summer. PSG are keen to strengthen their defence at the end of the season and have identified the Frenchman as a target.

The Paris-born centre-back is in the final 18 months of his contract, and with no agreement over a new deal remotely close, a move could be allowed before his contract expires.

Liverpool very keen on signing £57m ace

It may not just be Vivian who is on the Premier League side’s radar this summer, as according to Football Insider, Liverpool are “very keen” on signing Micky van de Ven from Tottenham Hotspur.

It is reported that Liverpool want to sign a new centre-back in the summer, even if Virgil van Dijk signs a new contract. Van de Ven has emerged on the Premier League leaders’ radar, as he is thought to be highly rated by Slot, who has come across the player plenty of times while in the Netherlands.

The Dutchman is viewed as an “elite Champions League level” player by Liverpool, and he would be capable of playing alongside Van Dijk or Konate.

The report does go on to add that while Liverpool are interested in Van de Ven, they are also interested in Marc Guehi, and they could still make a move for the Crystal Palace defender, as he is seen as an alternative long-term replacement for Van Dijk.

Van de Ven, who has been labelled a “dominant” defender by talent scout Jacek Kulig, has been in the Premier League since August 2023 and has played 36 games in the league, where he has looked comfortable on the ball, as well as quick and decisive in his defensive duties.

The 23-year-old has had his injury problems in recent months, but he may be seen as a perfect addition for Van Dijk, who will know him well from international duty, and the pair could help each other’s games, making Liverpool even more solid at the back.

But he may not come cheap, as he is said to be valued at £57m, which isn’t a surprise given Spurs paid £43m to sign him.
