Club may have no choice but to sell "elite" £50m ace as Liverpool plot move

As they potentially look to reward Arne Slot for an excellent start to life in the technical area, Liverpool are reportedly plotting a move to sign a key defensive reinforcement in 2025.

Liverpool transfer news

The Reds have been a revelation under Slot – sitting top of the Premier League and the Champions League standings, even after a recent blip in their otherwise unstoppable form.

What makes a run of just one Premier League defeat in 19 games even more impressive is the fact that the Dutchman welcomed just two summer reinforcements in the form of Giorgi Mamardashvili – who went straight back on loan to Valencia – and Federico Chiesa, who has struggled for fitness.

Instead of fresh faces, Liverpool’s focus has seemingly been on keeping hold of current stars. However, even on that front, they have so far failed to extend deals for Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah, who are all set to depart as free agents in the Reds’ biggest nightmare as things stand.

With the January transfer window now open, Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes certainly have some making up to do, which may yet see a fresh option emerge.

According to Spanish outlet AS, Liverpool are plotting a move to sign Loic Bade from Sevilla, who may have no choice but to sell their star defender amid their financial woes.

With a release clause of just €60m (£50m), it will be interesting to see whether the Reds decide to take action and welcome a reinforcement at the heart of their defence this month.

Given recent injuries to Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez – with the latter only just returning – signing another central defender wouldn’t exactly be a bad idea as they pursue Premier League and Champions League glory this season.

"Elite" Bade would push Liverpool over the line

After Jarell Quansah left the pitch through illness in the early stages of their recent defeat against Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool were forced to turn towards Wataru Endo to enter the equation and sit next to Virgil van Dijk rather than risk Konate fresh back from the sidelines.

Whilst the midfielder is experienced in the role, it remains unnatural and not the option that potential champions-elect should be turning to after just two absentees. Instead, Bade should emerge.

The Frenchman has been on the rise for some time and very much looks destined for the top of European football, which could yet feature a permanent trip to Anfield. Described as an “elite talent” by Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig in 2021, Bade has only gone up further levels ever since.

Now 24 years old, the defender should be approaching the peak of his powers and ready to become a champion away from Sevilla.

Sophia Dunkley century powers England as Charlie Dean, Issy Wong impress with ball

Fifties for Beaumont, Lamb and Sciver make South Africa toil despite Kapp 73

Sophia Dunkley, promoted to No.3 in this series, scored her first ODI hundred to seal the series for England, with a game to spare. Dunkley’s three-figure knock, along with fifty-plus scores from the other three in the top four, gave England their second-highest total against South Africa, and asked their visitors to complete their highest-successful ODI chase to draw level in the three-match rubber. Despite Laura Wolvaardt’s fastest half-century in the format, the South African line-up lacked substantial partnerships and fell far short.England’s batters have dominated the contest so far and, on a good run-scoring surface in Bristol, inflicted more pain on a side they beat here in the World Cup semi-final five years ago, almost to the day. England had century-stands for first and third wickets, both the third-highest in their respective positions for England against South Africa which book-ended their innings and finished with 105 runs in the last 10 overs and 46 in the final five. They took advantage of another lacklustre performance from the South African attack who, even with pace spearhead Shabnim Ismail back, lacked intensity and control. Ismail (too full) and Kapp (too wide) struggled to find their lines and lengths and with the seniors struggling, the rest of the attack could only apply pressure in patches. They prevented England from breaching the boundary between the 21st and 34th over but allowed them to score freely on either side of that squeeze.England’s new opening pair, Tammy Beaumont and Emma Lamb laid the foundation with the team’s first century stand since December 2019. They were prolific on the offside, with the cut through point making several appearances, and raced to 58 without loss after the Powerplay and 93 at the first drinks’ break.Desperate for a breakthrough, South Africa reviewed an lbw shot against Beaumont off left-arm Nonkululeko Mlaba. It was a poor referral and ball-tracking confirmed it was missing leg stump by a distance. Beaumont was on 41 at the time, and the dominant partner in the stand with Lamb, who then shifted gears.Lamb cut Mlaba through backward point to bring up fifty off 54 balls, a strong follow-up from her century on Monday, and then made room for herself to hit de Klerk over midwicket, through point and drag Mlaba over the in-field to surge ahead of Beaumont. Her eyes lit up when South Africa introduced their sixth bowler, Chloe Tryon, whose second ball was a loopy full-toss. Lamb swept but top-edged to Mlaba at short-fine leg to give South Africa some reprieve.South Africa took the opportunity to quiet England after that dismissal and had an opportunity against Beaumont when she scooped Kapp straight to mid-on but Mlaba spilt a simple chance. By then, Beaumont was on 52 and the drop could have proved costly but Beaumont developed cramp in her hand and three overs later, chipped Tryon to Ismail at mid-off.Issy Wong bowled with pace and penetration on her ODI debut•Getty Images

Just as South Africa gained some ground, Dunkley redirected the innings by hitting Ayabonga Khaka for back-to-back fours. England entered the last 10 overs on 232 for 2. Dunkley brought up her fifty off the 61st ball she faced and there was no stopping her from there. She took 16 runs off Ismail’s eighth over, reached her century off 87 balls and ensured England had a match-winning score. If they doubted that, it was only for 14.2 overs that Wolvaardt threatened. With two debuts in the XI, Lauren Bell and Issy Wong, Heather Knight chose to use Nat Sciver to open the bowling and her first four overs cost 32. Wolvaardt 21 runs off 12 deliveries she faced from Sciver, most of them full but one so short she pulled through mid-wicket. South Africa had a better Powerplay than England and scored 67 and Wolvaardt brought up 50 off 41 balls and an epic contest was brewing. But Wolvaardt’s 87-run stand with Andrie Steyn ended when she tried to clear the in-field off Charlie Dean and picked out Wong at mid-on.South Africa lost their next five wickets for 51 runs, including three to Wong. She had Lara Goodall caught at mid-on, Tryon caught behind and Nadine de Klerk caught by a diving Sciver at short cover. Ironically, the short ball that failed South Africa worked well for Wong.Kapp scored 50 off 46 balls, her 10th in ODIs, but had scant support. She was dismissed for 73 as South Africa entered the last 10 overs on 223 for 8, only nine behind where England were at the same stage, but six wickets adrift and with little chance of even batting out their overs. They were bowled out in 41 overs. Dean finished with the third four-fer of her career.

Leeds chasing move for "exciting" EFL gem who could be Farke’s new Buendia

Leeds United fans have annoyingly found themselves in this position before in terms of their promotion-chasing side taking the January transfer window a bit too leisurely.

Indeed, this time last year the Whites sealed just one deal in the window in the form of Burnley loanee Conor Roberts, with their lack of business arguably hurting their promotion aspirations as Daniel Farke’s squad became stretched.

With no new faces through the door yet, the Elland Road masses will be fearing a similar burnout will take place, but there is still time before the window shuts for Leeds to rewrite this narrative.

The promotion chasers could finally splash this cash this January on an up-and-coming EFL gem who would give the Leeds attack another boost if he was picked up ahead of some crunch games to come in the Championship.

Leeds racing to sign EFL attacker

As per a report by Football Insider, Leeds are now deep in a race to snap up Oxford United star Tyler Goodrham this month, with a whole host of other second-tier outfits keen on the 21-year-old’s services.

Football Insider further elaborates that Coventry City, Sunderland and Swansea City are all keeping tabs on the U’s youngster alongside the Whites, with Gary Rowett’s side perhaps powerless when it comes to losing their young attacking midfielder in the very near future.

Tyler Goodrham for Oxford United.

Whilst this wouldn’t necessarily be the most out-there purchase from Farke and Co, Goodrham could come in and offer an adaptable presence in the forward positions, much like another Leeds target in Emiliano Buendia.

He would also be a more realistic target for the promotion hopefuls to win over continuing to pursue the Aston Villa man as the clock ticks ever closer to deadline day.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

What Goodrham could offer Leeds

Whilst the German would love a spectacular reunion with Buendia to take place, having previously managed him at Norwich City, it might not all slot into place by the time of the early February deadline.

Whereas, a player like Goodrham would no doubt jump at the opportunity to sign for Farke’s side, with his performances for a relegation-threatened Oxford side this season standing out as a major positive at the Kassam Stadium.

The 21-year-old has tallied up three goals and three assists for his boyhood club from 25 league appearances, with his last strike in the Championship coming against Millwall to help his lowly team salvage a 1-1 draw.

Away from what is currently unfolding in the second tier, however, Goodrham was also a delight to watch in League One donning his side’s familiar yellow strip during the 2023/24 season, with eight goals – which included a pearler against Charlton Athletic – sailing into the back of the net, alongside amassing a further four assists which enabled his side to clinch promotion.

Buendia was similarly impactful under Farke’s guidance during the 2020/21 season at Carrow Road when he ridiculously tallied up 15 goals and 16 assists overall in the second tier, with Goodrham hopeful he can reach similarly dizzy heights over time if surrounded by top-quality players at Elland Road.

The pair’s similarities don’t end there, with the South American capable of playing down both wings if needed alongside slotting in as a number ten, which is where Goodrham also excels with the Oxford number 19 capable of playing across a wide range of positions.

Whilst the “exciting” 21-year-old – as he was once labelled by ex-U’s boss Des Buckingham – might not instantly make waves in Farke’s starting XI, he could be a useful purchase to bring in when considering his versatility, as Leeds try to win promotion between now and May.

In an international career spanning 18 years, he officiated in 331 matches, the second-most for an umpire

Rudi Koertzen, the former South African umpire who was part of the ICC’s elite panel, has died aged 73. He died in a car accident while driving from Cape Town to Despatch in Eastern Cape in South Africa, where he lived with his family.Koertzen’s son, Rudi Koertzen jr, confirmed the news. “He went on a golf tournament with some of his friends, and they were expected to come back on Monday, but it seems they decided to play another round of golf,” Koertzen Jr told Algoa FM News, a South African website.Koertzen was part of the ICC’s elite panel of umpires for eight years from 2002 and officiated in 331 international matches, a record at the time of his retirement in 2010, which has since been broken by Pakistan’s Aleem Dar. Along with Dar and West Indies’ Steve Bucknor, Koertzen was one of three umpires to stand in over 100 Tests.Related

Koertzen interview: 'I was never too scared to apologise'

Book review: Honest but hazy – the man behind the umpire

“It is a very big loss foremost for his family and then for South Africa and cricket,” Dar said of Koertzen’s death. “I stood in so many games with him. He was not only very good as an umpire but also an excellent colleague, always very cooperative on field and also always willing to help off the field. Because of the way he was, he was also well-respected by players.”Fellow South African umpire Marais Erasmus said: “Rudi was such a strong character, physically and mentally. He paved the way for South African umpires to get to the world stage. Made us all believe it’s possible. A true legend. As a young umpire, I learnt a lot from him.”At the age of 43, Koertzen’s first international series was India’s tour of South Africa in 1992-93; his first game was the second ODI in Gqeberha (then Port Elizabeth). He went on to become one of the best and most well-respected umpires in the world, and won praise in September 1999 for refusing a bribe to manipulate a match between West Indies and India in Singapore. The 2007 World Cup final, however, was a blip in his career: Koertzen was the third umpire in that match in Barbados, where the officials came in for criticism – and were penalised by the ICC – following a chaotic finish to the game.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

After retiring as an international umpire in 2010, Koertzen published a book, (with Chris Schoeman), in which he addressed the 2007 World Cup final. Koertzen went by the nickname “Slow Death” because of the amount of time he took to raise his finger while giving a batter out.The last representative game Koertzen stood in was in 2011, an IPL match between Royal Challenger Bangalore and Chennai Super Kings in Bengaluru. At the time of his death, he was still umpiring a few games in his hometown of Despatch and helping his local club, Despatch Cricket Club, with preparing pitches.”A legend in his own right passed away this morning and will definitely leave a great void in the cricket world,” Despatch Cricket Club said in tribute today. “We want to express our heartfelt sympathy and empathy to Uncle Rudi Koertzen’s family and loved ones.”Cricket South Africa chairperson Lawson Naidoo said: “Rudi departs at the time when cricket is beginning to enjoy the fruit of his toil. His passing has robbed us of a giant upon [whose] foundation we now stand.”While this is a sad day for cricket in South Africa, we are however comforted by the many lessons of servitude and servant leadership he has left behind for us to embody and emulate.”In his youth, Koertzen played top-division club cricket in Kimberley and was a medium pacer. Before becoming a professional umpire, as he told ESPNcricinfo in an interview in August 2010, he “worked for the railways as a carpenter in Port Elizabeth. Then I worked as a superintendent in the building trade, in the civil engineering section, supervising new buildings and renovations. I worked for them for 28 years and was a semi-professional umpire until … 1993.”

Gill's 130 trumps Raza's heroic 115 as rattled India make it 3-0

Zimbabwe fought back from 169 for 7 to fall narrowly short in a chase of 290

Vishal Dikshit22-Aug-20223:01

Takeaways: Gill and Axar’s steady progress in ODIs

A classy maiden ODI century and a stunning catch in the penultimate over of a tense chase from Shubman Gill gave India a thrilling 13-run win to complete a 3-0 whitewash after Sikandar Raza’s fighting hundred had brought the hosts back from the dead. From 169 for 7 in a chase of 290, Raza’s knock brought Zimbabwe to a point where they needed 15 to win from nine balls. But Raza, having already struck three sixes in reaching 115 off 94 balls, swung a slower ball from Shardul Thakur down the ground and was caught by Gill diving forward from long-on.It came down to 15 needed off the last over with just one wicket left, and Avesh Khan bowled Victor Nyauchi with a searing yorker that put the seal on India’s 3-0 scoreline.Raza led Zimbabwe’s charge almost singlehandedly from the 18th over on, scoring his third century in six innings and his sixth overall in ODIs even as wickets fell around him. Zimbabwe needed 95 from the last 10 with only three wickets left and Raza and the steadfast Brad Evans brought it down to 52 off 30.Raza then hit a six over the covers to begin a 12-run 46th over, and brought up his century in the next over as Zimbabwe inched closer. Thakur conceded just seven off the 47th over with his slower ones to make it 33 off 18. When Raza got strike in the next over, he scooped Avesh wide of short fine leg for four, and then clobbered him over the covers for another six next ball. An inside edge off Evans’ bat then ran away for four to lift Zimbabwe’s hopes further, bringing the equation down to 17 off 13. Avesh trapped Evans lbw next ball to leave Zimbabwe’s hopes resting entirely on Raza, but his wicket in the next over all but sealed the game for India.2:56

Axar: Chahar’s return, Avesh’s yorkers, Thakur’s death bowling were our biggest takeaways

Zimbabwe’s top-order show improved only slightly after the first two ODIs, with Sean Williams promoted to No. 3 after Deepak Chahar trapped Innocent Kaia with an inswinging yorker that followed a series of outswingers. Their problems were compounded when Takudzwanashe Kaitano walked off with what appeared to be a cramp in the sixth over and Tony Munyonga struggled to get going. Williams, however, struck three fours in his first nine balls, the best of them a decisive pull off Chahar. Singles and twos came more easily once the field spread, before Williams and Munyonga fell in successive overs. Axar Patel first trapped Williams plumb with a dart for 45, before Munyonga mistimed a lofted drive to wide mid-off off Avesh to leave Zimbabwe 84 for 3.Raza and Regis Chakabva moved them past 100 before Axar struck again, just past the halfway mark of the chase, taking a sharp return catch to his left to send back Chakabva. The returning Kaitano was then stumped off Kuldeep Yadav seven balls later to leave the chase on Raza’s shoulders with the asking rate having crept past 7.5. Raza decided to see off the two spinners and went after the quicks as conditions remained batting-friendly.He began Chahar’s second spell with a mighty six over midwicket and got a thick edge for four three balls later. After he crossed his half-century, he went after Thakur and Avesh. When Zimbabwe needed 115 from 12 overs, he hit three successive fours off Thakur in a 20-run over, before he and Evans collected a four each in the 41st, bowled by Avesh, to bring the equation down to 79 off 54. Raza and Evans put on 104 off 77, with Evans contributing just 28, but once India broke the partnership, there was not much batting to come.Earlier, Gill’s stroke-filled 130 off 97 balls gave them a competitive score even as Evans finished with a maiden five-for. KL Rahul opted to bat in “challenging” conditions early on, but himself looked scratchy before chopping on for 30 off Evans. Dhawan started the India innings with three fours in his first 10 balls, but Zimbabwe replied with tight bowling thereon. Dhawan got a life on 17 when he was dropped at point off Richard Ngarava, but he couldn’t capitalise, and handed a leading edge to cover for 40.Sikandar Raza almost derailed India with 115 off 95•Associated Press

It was all Gill after that. He walked in when India were going at just over four an over looked a class apart with his control and ability to score briskly. He timed the ball crisply, drove with confidence, and kept the score ticking even as Ishan Kishan took his time to ease himself in, getting a life when he was on 6 off 17 balls when Williams dropped a return catch in the 27th over. Kishan broke the shackles by slog-sweeping and lofting Raza for two fours in the 32nd over, before Gill collected two more against Williams. The duo accelerated after Gill reached a 51-ball half-century in the 34th over, taking 33 off the next three overs and bringing up their century stand soon after. But just as Gill raced towards his century and Kishan brought up his second ODI fifty, off 61 balls, Zimbabwe began to hit back. Gill survived a close lbw appeal on 97 off Evans in the 43rd over, and a review showed he had got a thick edge, but Zimbabwe still got a wicket off that ball, with Kishan run out when Munyonga swooped in from point and threw the stumps down at the non-striker’s end. Evans’ offcutter then bowled Deepak Hooda for 1 five balls later, but Gill was unfazed. He bowed down towards the dressing room to celebrate his century, off just 82 balls, off the next ball and continued to unleash his booming drives and pulls. He got a life in an eventful 46th over, when he was dropped at short fine leg on 110, after which Sanju Samson hit two successive sixes before holing out to deep square leg.Zimbabwe fought back in the last two overs, mainly thanks to Evans. In the last over he had Gill caught at long-off for 130 and Thakur miscuing a slower ball to mid-off while giving away only seven more, and finished with his maiden ODI five-for, which his father and former Zimbabwe allrounder Craig Evans applauded from the stands.

McKenna’s next Hirst: Ipswich make enquiry to sign "explosive" Delap rival

Ipswich Town were on the receiving end of another humbling defeat in the Premier League when travelling to Liverpool on Saturday as Arne Slot’s hosts ran out convincing 4-1 victors.

It was always going to be a tall order for the Tractor Boys to go to Anfield and topple the might of the Reds, with the Suffolk underdogs remaining in the top-flight drop-zone on goal difference off the back of another heavy loss.

With Ali Al-Hamadi now loaned out to the Championship to gift him more game-time, Kieran McKenna could now be looking at improving his numbers up top.

After all, as much as Liam Delap has shown regularly this season he can be an explosive and clinical striker, he is also prone to an off-day in front of goal.

Liam Delap's recent struggles for Ipswich

Indeed, the former Manchester City attacker has drawn blanks across his last three Ipswich outings, with the standard of opposition arguably not helping his case.

Across the three defeats to Brighton and Hove Albion, Liverpool and Manchester City, Delap has only managed to muster up a weak combined total of 53 touches, with just three efforts registered too as the rest of his teammates also struggled to find the back of the net.

Of course, you would imagine that the 21-year-old will flicker back into life in front of goal sooner rather than later, considering he can boast eight goals from 21 Premier League games away from his current barren patch of form.

But, McKenna will know he cannot rely on just Delap to deliver the goods, and with George Hirst only managing one strike from 11 league games himself as an option in reserve, a new striker prospect could soon arrive through the door to shake up the striker positions.

Ipswich enquire about "explosive" teenager

As per a report from football journalist Graeme Bailey, interest is beginning to heat up regarding the services of Sheffield United youngster Ryan One, with Ipswich just one suitor looking at the promising Scotsman.

The Tractor Boys have allegedly made an enquiry to sign the teenager, with other notable Premier League sides looking at the exciting 18-year-old in the form of Liverpool, Brighton and Tottenham Hotspur. That said, One could well be intrigued by the potential of moving to Suffolk with more game-time perhaps on the table for him at Portman Road.

After all, the teenage hotshot has already begun to make waves at his current side Sheffield United, with this composed finish in the U21 ranks against arch-rivals Sheffield Wednesday one reason why he has been bumped up to the first team ranks.

The “explosive” youngster – as he has been labelled by Scottish football X account Scotball in the past – has since scored just once in the senior fold under Chris Wilder from 13 appearances, with a hope attached here that Ipswich can strike gold again by signing a raw talent that used to call South Yorkshire home like they managed with the aforementioned Hirst.

As can be seen by looking at the table above, Hirst hasn’t always been known as a goalscoring hero like he is now at Portman Road during his team’s unbelievable back-to-back promotions, as the 25-year-old visibly struggled with his confidence at various different clubs before his big Ipswich switch.

Therefore, whilst One only boasts five senior career goals playing in Scotland and in Sheffield, McKenna might well be the best possible manager to get the most of him moving forward like he managed with Hirst.

Nobody will be expecting the 18-year-old to usurp Delap in the starting XI, but One’s purchase would keep the 21-year-old on his toes and gift the Tractor Boys another youthful spark in attack.

Ipswich have struck gold on "superb" star who is worth as much as Enciso

Ipswich Town already have this excellent talent who is worth as much as Julio Enciso.
