The three group games of the three-team Women’s T20 Challenge, between Trailblazers, Velocity and Supernovas, will be held on May 23, 24 and 26, with the final on May 28. Supernovas won the trophy the first two years, while Trailblazers won the tournament in 2020. The tournament was first held in 2018, in Mumbai, and was played in Jaipur and Sharjah respectively the following years. However, the tournament was cancelled last season because of the Covid-19 pandemic. It was also confirmed that the IPL playoffs will be held in front of capacity crowds for the first time since the 2019 edition. The IPL governing council had initially allowed a 25% capacity, which was increased to 50% later on.All the IPL 2022 league-stage games had previously been scheduled only in the state of Maharashtra, at the Wankhede and Brabourne stadiums in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai’s DY Patil Stadium, and the MCA Stadium in Pune, with the BCCI being cautious owing to the pandemic situation. However, with the situation better in India now, the board has decided to branch out to other cities for the playoffs and final.

Harmanpreet’s 51-ball 71 not enough to take Supernovas to a safe total after their powerplay had ended on 29 for 3

Velocity 151 for 3 (Verma 51, Wolvaardt 51*, Dottin 2-21) beat Supernovas 150 for 5 (Harmanpreet 71, Taniya 36, Cross 2-24) by seven wicketsIn the contest between two of India’s best power-hitters, Harmanpreet Kaur’s 51-ball 71 won the individual battle, but Shafali Verma, with 51 off 33 balls, finished on the right side of the result.Supernovas lost to Velocity by seven wickets in the second Women’s T20 Challenge match in Pune on Tuesday. A win would have secured a final berth for Supernovas after their opening-day win over Trailblazers but, fortunately for them, they still sit atop of the points table because of a good net run-rate.Chasing 151 for victory, Verma’s boundary-laden half-century and Laura Wolvaardt’s unbeaten 51 in 35 balls took Velocity to the target in 18.2 overs, without much of a hiccup. This was also the highest successful run chase in the history of the tournament.Supernovas were playing a match a little over half a day after beating Trailblazers. They lost three wickets inside four overs after being asked to bat, and scored just 60 runs in the first ten overs. But Harmanpreet’s 71 and her 82-run stand with Taniya Bhatia for the fourth wicket lifted Supernovas to 150 for 5; it might have been enough on another day, but not this one.Kate Cross had Priya Punia driving uppishly to cover on the third ball of the match•BCCI
Eighteen for three after 23 balls It took Velocity only three balls to strike, as Kate Cross removed Priya Punia in the first over of the innings. Punia, who began her innings with a four off the first delivery, was caught in the covers by Ayabonga Khaka when she played an uppish drive. A three-run over from captain Deepti Sharma followed, and Cross struck again in her second over when she removed the in-form Harleen Deol.Deol couldn’t build on her 19-ball 35 from the opener against Trailblazers as she fell to Cross’ outswing, looking to play a flick but only sending a leading edge to backward point for Wolvaardt to grab. The big wicket came in the fourth over when Deepti removed the dangerous Deandra Dottin. Dottin, who made 32 off 17 on Monday, came down the track for a slog-sweep but the mistimed shot ended up as a top-edge to wicketkeeper Yastika Bhatia. In 17 minutes, Supernovas’ top three – who contributed 89 runs in the first match – were back in the dugout.Harmanpreet Kaur looked untroubled despite the early wickets•BCCI
The rescue act Taniya was promoted to No. 4 after batting at No. 9 in the first game. Her job was simple: stay long and steady the innings. She did exactly that. Alongside Harmanpreet, who came in at No. 5, she put on 82 runs off 63 balls for the fourth wicket – the highest stand ever in the Women’s T20 Challenge – after the early jitters. Both the batters preferred the assortment of sweeps, with Velocity’s spinners operating from both ends. The first 50 runs of the partnership came at a run a ball, but Harmanpreet upped the rate with a four and a six in debutant wristspinner Maya Sonawane’s second over, the 13th of the innings.Just when the two looked set for a big score, though, the partnership came to an end when Taniya was run out at the non-striker’s end attempting a non-existent run courtesy Yastika’s quick throw to Khaka, the bowler. Taniya fell for a 32-ball 36, which included three fours.Harmanpreet, who had scored 37 runs off her first 30 balls and got to ger half-century off 42 balls, finished with 71 off 51 to propel Supernovas to a respectable total. After Taniya’s departure, she went hard, scoring two boundaries and a six in the 18th over off Sneh Rana, after the bowler had conceded just ten runs in her first three overs.Shafali Verma smashed a 30-ball half-century•BCCI
Verma sets the stage on fire Verma was on song, playing her shots as she always does, but showing off some touch play too along with her big hits. And she had raced away to 47 in 24 balls by the time the powerplay ended, with her team at 60 for 1. They became 69 for 2 not long after when Yastika was bowled between her legs by Dottin, but Verma completed her half-century as scheduled – after an lbw verdict against her, off Alana King, was overturned on review – off 30 balls.Ending an innings like that – the quickest half-century in the history of the competition – needed something special, and Harmanpreet provided it. Dottin went around the wicket and bowled wide of off stump, Verma flashed hard at it, and it would have flown to the third-man boundary had it not been for a flying catch from the Supernovas captain. Her team-mates can’t get enough of Harmanpreet Kaur after she pulled off a stunning catch at short third man to send back Shafali Verma•BCCI
Wolvaardt and Deepti finish the job In the tenth over, newcomer Kiran Navgire was expected to join Wolvaardt, but Deepti decided to walk out, providing a left-right combination. Though the required rate was below seven at that stage, Wolvaardt was in no mood to slow down. She kept the scorecard ticking with a number of boundaries in her 35-ball knock, while Deepti played second fiddle, scoring at more than run-a-ball but without trying anything flashy.Wolvaardt completed her half-century, off 35 balls, in the 19th over with a six down the ground off Dottin. And the job was done when Dottin followed up with a short ball that was declared a wide.

One of the biggest problems Arsenal have been facing this season isn’t just the Premier League’s officials or injuries but it’s a lack of creativity.
They may have scored 39 goals in the top-flight this term, the division’s third-best tally but they are far behind some of their rivals when it comes to producing chances to score from.
Indeed, according to FBRef, they rank fifth for key passes this season with 223, tenth for through balls with 37 and tenth again for shot-creating actions on 493, suggesting they lack someone capable of breaking open a defence and playing a killer pass.
Martin Odegaard’s 12-game absence across all competitions earlier in the season won’t have helped that data and Bukayo Saka’s now lengthy time on the sidelines with a hamstring injury means they won’t be climbing the rankings for those particular numbers anytime soon.
Ethan Nwaneri’s emergence as a starter in recent weeks certainly helped but he is now set to miss a few weeks because of a muscular injury, meaning the Gunners have to go out and bolster the squad while the winter transfer window is open for business.
Arsenal targeting Premier League midfielder this January
Who better to help Arsenal’s chance creation than the man with the third-highest number of assists in the Premier League this season?
Well, they could just sign that exact star with reports from Spain suggesting that Brentford midfielder Mikkel Damsgaard has ‘caught the attention’ of the north London side this winter.
Transfer Focus
Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.
It’s reported that the Gunners are ‘willing to make a strong bid’ for the Denmark international’s services and it could take a fee of around £33m to prise him away from the Bees.
The report ends by claiming that ‘talks could intensify in the coming days’ ahead of concluding a deal before the January window ends.
So, what could he offer to Arsenal? Creativity in abundance, that’s for sure.
How Mikkel Damsgaard compares to Martin Odegaard
Mikel Arteta desperately needs players who can pick the lock of a defence and in Damsgaard, they’d have the perfect man.
Only Mo Salah (13) and Saka (10) have assisted more goals than the Dane’s seven in Premier League action this summer, suggesting that he could be the perfect player for the likes of Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz to link up with.
Of course, Arsenal need wingers this January, so how would another midfielder fit into Arteta’s system?
Well, the 24-year-old has the versatility to perform a number of roles should he move to the capital in 2025. This term, Damsgaard has been operating more as an attacking midfielder but he has played on the flanks.
Damsgaard (L) and Odegaard (R) heat maps via Sofascore.
Unlike Odegaard, however, who does most of his work on the right, the Brentford ace tends to play in the pockets on the left-hand side.
That area of the pitch has been a problem for a while now with Arsenal’s right-hand bias well known across the country. Indeed, no Premier League side attacks down the right more than the Londoners with 44% of their attacks being registered in that area of the field. Contrastingly, no side has registered fewer attacks down the left than the Gunners at 32%.

Well, Damsgaard could help solve that problem by offering the type of creativity and flow from the left that Arsenal had when Granit Xhaka was still at the club, playing as the left-sided 8 in Arteta’s system.
This is the role the Bees star could undertake and he’d certainly be well suited to doing that job. Here’s how he compares to Odegaard across a number of metrics.

While Odegaard plays a great deal more progressive passes here, you can see where similarities lie between the two Nordic midfielders.
They make a similar number of passes into the final third and despite Damsgaard being streets ahead for assists per 90 minutes, the Arsenal skipper is actually slightly ahead for expected assists, suggesting that Brentford have been more clinical when being supplied with opportunities by their Danish magician.
So, although the Gunners target has had a few injury-hit campaigns, he has “been a revelation this season” in the words of Express reporter Ryan Taylor, someone who’s becoming “an explosive, high-pressing, ball-winning machine.”
He might not be the first pick for supporters but the evidence is there that he’d not only improve Arsenal’s chance creation but he’d also significantly improve their left side dynamics. That can only be a good thing.

It would be fair to say that the last couple of weeks haven’t been particularly enjoyable for the Arsenal faithful.
They’ve seen their team drop more points in the Premier League, crash out of the FA Cup and given themselves an extraordinarily large hill to climb in the League Cup, and then, to top it all off, Gabriel Jesus is now out with an ACL injury.
Altogether, this has made the need for a new attacking signing this month all the more pressing, and one of the names that keeps popping up is Dušan Vlahović.
The Serbian international is an incredibly talented forward and someone who’d certainly improve Mikel Arteta’s squad, but based on recent reports, the club could end up signing another striker who’d be an even better addition.
Arsenal plot striker swoop
According to a recent report from journalist and transfers expert Ben Jacobs, Arsenal have maintained their strong interest in RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Šeško.
Transfer Focus
Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.
Interestingly, Jacobs has revealed that the Slovenian international was “sold” on the North Londoners project in the summer but opted to remain in Germany as he believed it was “best for his short-term development.”
However, Jacobs does pour some cold water on the news by claiming it’s “unclear if Sesko could be persuaded to move mid-season.”
A potential price tag is not mentioned in the journalist’s report, but stories from last month claimed that Leipzig would demand at least €70m for their star attacker, which comes to about £59m.
In all, it could be a complicated and costly transfer to get over the line, but given how well Sesko is playing this season, his age and his potential, it could prove to be value for money down the line and a better investment than signing Vlahovic.
How Šeško compares to Vlahović
So, if Arsenal are currently looking at both Vlahović and Šeško as potential additions to the squad, either for this month or in the summer, which one should they go for?
Benjamin Sesko scores for Slovenia
Well, when we compare their pure output from this season, which is, of course, what matters most for a centre-forward, it’s a close-run thing, but it’s the Leipzig star who comes out on top.
In his 24 appearances so far, totalling 1683 minutes, the unreal “monster,” as dubbed by analyst Ben Mattinson, has scored 12 goals and provided three assists, equating to an average of a goal involvement every 1.60 games, or every 112.20 minutes.
In contrast, the Juventus star has found the back of the net 12 times and provided two assists in 23 appearances totalling 1873 minutes, meaning he is averaging a goal involvement every 1.64 games, or every 133.78 minutes.
Unfortunately for the Serbian international, he comes out an even more distant second-best when we take a look under the hood and compare their underlying numbers from this season.

For example, the Leipzig star, whose “ball striking is a joke” according to Mattinson, comes out ahead in almost all relevant metrics, including but not limited to actual non-penalty goals plus assists, progressive passes and carries, shots on target, successful take-ons, goal-creating actions, aerial duels won and more, all per 90.
Finally, while there isn’t a massive difference in their ages, the fact that the Slovenian is three years younger at 21 and already outperforming his former Fiorentina star further cements the idea that he is the forward with a higher ceiling.
Ultimately, while both players are incredibly talented and would surely improve Arsenal’s frontline, it is quite clear that Šeško is the better option and therefore, the Gunners must do what they can to sign him as soon as possible.
No.1 target: Arsenal want to sign 'very expensive' winger who's like Saka
The incredible international could become as important to Arsenal as the Englishman.

Derbyshire’s five-match winning streak comes to an end with hefty defeat

Derbyshire Falcons’ five-match winning streak in the Vitality Blast came to an end after Notts Outlaws bounced back from three consecutive defeats by posting 247 for 6 – their highest total in this format – in a thumping 94-run victory over their East Midlands neighbours.Ben Duckett hit a season’s-best 63 and Alex Hales his third half-century of the campaign as the Outlaws, who conceded a competition-record 261 against Birmingham Bears here last week, enjoyed their best night of what has been a disappointing season. On a good batting surface, the Falcons had fancied themselves in a chase when they opted to field first but were never in the hunt, bowled out for 153 as fast bowler Zak Chappell marked his first appearance of the season by taking 3 for 28, veteran spinner Samit Patel 3 for 32 and Steven Mullaney a miserly 2 for 17 after Brooke Guest top-scored for Derbyshire with an unbeaten 40.Nonetheless, with two matches to come, the Falcons remain well-placed to qualify for a second Finals Day appearance in four years. After racking up 95 in the powerplay at Derby earlier in the season, the Outlaws punished the Falcons bowlers again with 86 off the first six and never took their foot off the pedal.Hales set the tone with a brutal 55 off just 22 deliveries, twice clearing the ropes as he plundered 21 against Sam Conners in the second over and lofted a towering straight six off Mattie McKiernan to complete his half-century.As on Tuesday against Leicestershire, he was caught at long-on attempting a repeat, but where he was the only Outlaw to pass 12 on a dismal night, this time he had plenty of support.Joe Clarke, who got away with a miscue when still in single figures, pulled Wayne Madsen’s opening ball for six to move to 38 before he was caught by the bowler off a towering top edge.Three boundaries in a row by Duckett off Wayne Madsen took the Outlaws to 124 for 2 at halfway, which became 188 for 3 after 15 following Mullaney’s 45 off 20 balls including four sixes, three of them off consecutive balls from George Scrimshaw as a top-edge over long leg was followed by two more launched over mid-wicket, where he was caught going for another.Duckett completed his first half-century of the campaign before hitting straight to mid-on and Patel was brilliantly caught by Leus du Plooy on the midwicket boundary as Mark Watt (1 for 51) and Scrimshaw (2 for 62) picked up consolation wickets, but four boundaries by Tom Moores took the Outlaws past their previous record total, also against Derbyshire, of 227 in 2017.The Falcons responded with 72 in their powerplay but at the cost of three wickets, critically among them that of leading scorer Shan Masood, bowled making room to cut by Chappell. Luis Reece and McKiernan were the other two casualties, as Clarke and Mullaney pulled off fine catches.Australian all-rounder Hayden Kerr struck 24 off 11 but was stumped off Mullaney’s first delivery. His seventh bowled Madsen in an attempted reverse sweep and at the halfway point the required run-rate was just shy of 15 per over at 99 for 5, with another setback soon to follow as Du Plooy fell on 35, picking out mid-off to give Chappell his second wicket.Alex Hughes skied one to become Chappell’s third scalp, Patel obtained two lbw verdicts in consecutive deliveries to remove Watt and Conners to leave the Falcons nine down in the 15th over, before Guest and Scrimshaw salvaged a little pride for the visitors by adding an unbroken 34.
