After yet more inconsistency on the pitch, Newcastle United have reportedly turned their attention towards a future star who has attracted plenty of attention from a number of European sides.

It’s been one step forward and two steps back for Newcastle as of late, having impressed in a dramatic 3-3 draw against Liverpool in midweek, only to suffer a frustrating 4-2 defeat at the hands of Brentford this weekend.

This all follows a frustrating summer, in which Paul Mitchell failed to make an impact in his first transfer window as sporting director.

With the January transfer window approaching, those at St James’ Park could yet make up for lost time and hand Eddie Howe some much-needed reinforcements. On that front, names such as Bryan Mbeumo and Antoine Semenyo have already been mentioned in two deals that would instantly sharpen Newcastle’s frontline alongside Alexander Isak.

Whether or not those moves take place as early as the January transfer window remains to be seen, but the Newcastle squad certainly needs the addition of attacking reinforcements. But it’s not just those who are already established that the Magpies have turned their attention towards, with one future star now also reportedly on their radar.

According to Graeme Bailey for The Boot Room, Newcastle are now interested in signing Nimfasha Berchimas ahead of Manchester United from MLS side Charlotte. The 16-year-old sensation has attracted plenty of attention, having trained with Bayern Munich in 2022 and now set to train with the Red Devils, who appear to be a step ahead of Newcastle in the race for his signature.

"Huge talent" Berchimas is one to watch

Whilst Berchimas is not able to move to Europe until 2026 when he will be 18 years old, he remains one to watch, having been described as a “huge talent” by MLS insider Tom Bogert.

At such a young age, it’s incredibly impressive that Berchimas is already making his mark on Charlotte’s first team with three appearances to his name. Meanwhile, he’s also impressed for their youth side, scoring 6 goals in 21 games in the MLS Next Pro.

If Newcastle are looking to sign a future upgrade on Miguel Almiron – who also arrived from MLS – signing a young player of Berchimas’ calibre is certainly an intelligent route to take.

However, with plenty of competition for his signature, the Magpies will have to move quickly to secure a deal before the likes of Manchester United can swoop in.

Their inconsistency is a real worry, not to mention their sheer number of injuries right now. Star defender Cristian Romero is out for around six weeks after picking up a quadriceps injury against Chelsea, according to reports in South America, as he joins the growing list of long-term absentees.

“Every time we have seemed like we are on solid footing something has come along which will become an impediment for us to do that,” said Postecoglou on Tottenham’s inconsistency after their Chelsea defeat.

“It’s just the way our season has gone so far. It went like that last year. It’s not like since I have been here this is unusual territory. Ultimately, my role now is to focus on the things I can control and keep preparing the team the best we can to keep progressing as a football team and turn our season around.

“When I look at today’s performance I don’t see them lacking confidence or belief. It’s probably the other way. Both penalties we conceded were borne out of desperation. I think they are desperate to turn our season around and are really disappointed how it has gone.

“When you’re in that mood you kind of lose that composure and discipline you need. It’s not like we are hanging on in games, we wouldn’t play like we did today if there was a lack of belief and confidence. When you get into this situation we are in there is also a sense of desperation from the players and I thought that cost us today.”

The next two transfer windows are soon upon us, though, and it could hand Postecoglou an opportunity to strengthen in key areas with a view of competing more fiercely next season – if he is indeed still at the helm.

They’ve been sporadically linked with a new number nine, despite the arrival of Solanke last summer, with Lille star Jonathan David rumoured to be on their radar heading into 2025.

The Canada international will be available at zero cost at the end of the season, and it could shape up to be one of the biggest bargains of the year, considering David already has 17 goals from 23 appearances in all competitions this term – including four in five Champions League games.

As per The Boot Room, Tottenham have opened talks with David’s representatives, as they plot signing the Ligue 1 star on a Bosman deal.

The report states that this comes after Paratici recommended David to Spurs recently, and if Postecoglou wishes to bring in an alternative for Solanke, there are hardly more prolific options on the market available at a cheaper price.

Fortunately for Tottenham, despite his mixed form, it will be a boost having Yves Bissouma back in contention to play United tonight. The Mali international has served his own suspension for picking up five yellow cards, and he’s now available for selection.

Spurs will be desperate to have star central defensive duo van de Ven and Romero back at the earliest opportunity, after both players succumbing to fresh injury setbacks in their 4-3 defeat at home to Chelsea, but Postecoglou says they won’t be back until 2025.

“(Micky) Van de Ven and (Cristian) Romero are still chugging along,” said Postecoglou on van de Ven and Romero.

“I think both will be in the new year. Not as a significant injury as last time with Micky, but obviously having a setback the medical team is going to make sure he is right to go. So both of them in the new year at some point.”

Postecoglou has been forced to utilise teenage summer signing Archie Gray as a makeshift centre-half, with Radu Dragusin being their only fit, natural senior central defensive option right now.

This has prompted reports that Tottenham are planning to sign a new centre-back in January, and there have even been suggestions that Getafe defender Omar Alderete is in talks to join Spurs next month.

According to The Boot Room, the north Londoners are after a new defensive ace who can come in and play as a back-up to van de Ven – leading to their serious interest in Feyenoord star David Hancko.

Tottenham are eyeing a January move for Hancko, with his £35 million price tag from the summer also expected to drop.

The 48-cap Slovakia international, who played against England at Euro 2024, dazzled under Liverpool manager Arne Slot at Feyenoord – completing more passes than any other player in the Eredivisie last season (The Athletic).

He was and is a crucial part of their spine, consistently transitioning the play from defence to attack, with Hancko tallying more progressive carries out from the back than any other Dutch top-flight star in 2023/2024 (The Athletic).

“He is so stable and can basically do anything. I just think he is a top defender all-round,” said ex-Feyenoord defender Tim de Cler to SoccerNews.

“I think he can easily handle a club just below the top six in Europe. Then I’m talking about a club like Atlético Madrid or Liverpool. He can certainly handle that.”
