Head coach feels India have made significant gains in building the fast-bowling depth for next year’s World Cup

After the England tour in July, India’s head coach Ramesh Powar had underlined how lack of support for Jhulan Goswami was one of the many problem areas. After the Australia series, India’s second tour in the space of three months, it’s one area he feels India have made significant gains in with Meghna Singh, Renuka Singh, Shikha Pandey and Pooja Vastrakar all queuing up to give India fast-bowling depth building into the 50-over World Cup 2022 and beyond.Meghna, primarily a swing bowler capable of taking it away from the right-hand batters, was picked on the back of a tournament-winning campaign with Railways in the 50-over competition this April. On tour, she picked up just one wicket in three ODIs, but remained economical across the 21 overs she bowled. In the Test, she snared two scalps. More than the numbers, her temperament, the ability to hit her lengths consistently and keep wheeling away stood out.Renuka, two years younger at 25, impressed in her two outings in the T20Is. Although her inexperience towards the death overs showed in the second T20I with India needing to defend 14 off the last two overs, her accuracy and the tying down of Beth Mooney and Meg Lanning inside the powerplay was noteworthy. In the final T20I, she dismissed Alyssa Healy early after India elected to bowl.Meanwhile, Pandey, India’s highest wicket-taker at the T20 World Cup last year, had a point to prove after being left out of the ODIs and the one-off Test. With her one ball alone, to dismiss Healy in the second T20I, she proved none of her old virtues that have made her a regular since 2016 had diminished. Swing being right on top of that list. A ball that swerved in from way outside off, hit the deck and jagged back in alarmingly to have Healy chop on.”After coming back from the UK tour, we set some goals and the goals were achieved [in Australia],” Powar said after Australia clinched the T20I series 2-0. “We were looking at the seam attack to support Jhulan, which we were struggling with in England. The way Meghna, Pooja Vastrakar and Renuka bowled, especially today [was fantastic]. The objective was to find a pace battery that we can invest in and carry on to the World Cup.”Among the options he named, three are largely considered seam-bowling options. Vastrakar showed another dimension to her accurate seam-ups – the ability to finish off innings in the second T20I gave India a total they made a spirited defense of, while in the final game, her late blows reduced the margin of defeat. It typified the kind of “character” Powar expects from the team: the ability to fight when the chips are down.”I think it was fantastic,” Powar summed up the performance of the young group. “I think Australia is the No. 1 side, England is right up there, so testing our own skills was very helpful. The girls reacted well on this tour. We’ve shown some character and that is what we want. You can’t win games with just quality players; you need to have characters in the team.”We stand at a juncture where Mithali [Raj] and Jhulan [Goswami] are almost going to fade away at some point, so getting the England tour and the Australia tour mainly for the young cricketers like Meghna, Renuka, fast bowlers… be it Jemimah [Rodrigues], it makes a huge difference because you’ll be tested against the best and you can show your skill here and then you can go forward and build your career from here. We wanted to test our players, and this was the best opportunity – the England [tour] and mainly the Australia tour.”Asked if the decision to bench key players like Pandey, Poonam Yadav and Rodrigues at different stages on tour was a conscious decision, Powar calmly explained the rationale behind the thought process. “There’s no surety of places, we want to make healthy competition in our squad,” he said. “That was the motto for this tour. You don’t take your place for granted; if you are not consistent enough and not playing your primary roles, you will be sidelined. We want to keep the healthy competition going in the team, we don’t want someone to take their place for granted.”

So far, Maxwell has scores of 18, 5, 6, and two 0 not outs in the World Cup but he is “not fazed by lack of time in the middle”

Glenn Maxwell is happy to be a bit-part player in the World Cup semi-final if it means Australia goes on to claim their maiden T20 title. The allrounder entered the tournament as one of the form players on the planet and was expected to carry the nation’s title hopes on his shoulders throughout the tournament. But he has been reduced a role player and a spectator at times as Australia has marched to the semi-finals with only one blemish against England. He has scores of 18, 5, 6, and two 0 not outs having not faced a ball in either of the last two games.”I’m certainly not fazed by lack of time in the middle because it’s actually been a really nice change and it means the top order is going really well if I’m not spending that much time out there,” Maxwell said. “I’ve been in a really good headspace, so hopefully [I’m] not required again or hopefully required for another 0 not out and just stay at the other end.”Maxwell is confident if he is needed in the semi-final against Pakistan that he can find the form he had during the IPL.Related

“I feel like I’ve done so much work at training and I’ve been here for two-and-a-bit months,” Maxwell said. “I know the conditions really well. It doesn’t matter if I haven’t batted for a few days or whatnot, I feel like I’m still in that headspace where I was during the IPL, where I was hitting the ball really cleanly and feel ready to play whatever role I need to when I get out there.”Maxwell has also had an unusual role with the ball in Australia’s bowling formation. With the decision to play just four specialist bowlers and only one specialist spinner most of the time in Adam Zampa, Maxwell was expected to play a huge role in the spin-friendly conditions. He proved more than capable with an outstanding four-over spell against South Africa in Australia’s opening game, but he has bowled just four overs since. He has only been required to bowl specific overs in the powerplay for specific match-ups to left-handers. Whether that will continue against Pakistan remains to be seen given their openers Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan are right-handers, and Fakhar Zaman is the only left-hander in the top six.Maxwell registered figures of 1 for 24 from four overs against South Africa•ICC via Getty
Australia would like to squeeze one over out of their fifth bowler in the powerplay as they have done all tournament but Maxwell believes the pacemen will do the bulk of the work upfront given their success.”The way that our quicks have bowled with the new ball has been outstanding,” Maxwell said. “They’ve still been able to get some movement out of these pitches. I think it’s been two-and-a-half months’ worth of cricket on these pitches, but they’re still able to find something in there and get key wickets for us upfront and that’s going to be key for us going forward.”I think anytime you can take wickets in that powerplay by using your best bowlers and using your right match-ups at the right time, it certainly puts the opposition on the back foot.”Playing the seventh batter has been important for Australia in four winning chases so far. Maxwell believes Australia need to be bold and trust their batting depth if they are asked to bat first in the semi-final.”I think for us, it’s just to play with freedom,” Maxwell said. “To back the fact that we’ve got a really strong top order.”We’re playing the extra batter. We’ve got a fair bit of batting there. To know that we probably barely used our five, six and seven throughout the tournament probably shows how good our top few have been. Mitch Marsh has been on fire the last couple of games. Finch and Warner, obviously, peaking at the right time as well. So we’re in a really good space, I think.”I’ve also seen teams go the other way and try and hold wickets back to make sure they could go at the backend and give themselves the opportunity to play with freedom in the backend. But I suppose for us, it’s probably playing with freedom at the start and really trying to make the most of the powerplay and putting the opposition on the back foot.”
Chelsea’s first transfer window under their new ownership is widely perceived as one with many mistakes, spending (£250m) on eight permanent transfers, and one loan deal.
The biggest signing of that 2022/23 summer window, was Wesley Fofana, joining the Blues from Leicester City, for a fee of around £75m. The Frenchman has struggled with injuries since joining Chelsea back in 2022, only making 28 appearances for the club so far, scoring two goals, and totalling 2.444 minutes played.

Another player still at the club from this window, who is beginning to thrive, is Marc Cucurella, who has settled in at the club now, after a rocky first few seasons. The 26-year-old has made 69 appearances for the Blues now, scoring one goal, providing four assists, and totalling 5,198 minutes played.
Perhaps the worst of these moves was the signing of Raheem Sterling, who joined from Manchester City with high expectations for £47.5m.
Chelsea's costly 2022 signing
Sterling joined Chelsea with a wealth of top-flight experience behind him, with Thomas Tuchel keen to bring the England international to the club back in 2022. Having scored 131 goals for Manchester City in his 339 appearances, Chelsea fans were excited by the prospect of a goalscoring winger joining their ranks.
Wage Burners
Football FanCast's Wage Burners series explores the salaries of the modern-day game.
However, his time at Chelsea was far from successful, scoring just 19 times, making 81 appearances, and providing 12 assists in his 5.326 minutes. Many of his performances came under scrutiny, as the 29-year-old was one of the only experienced members of the squad.
Another reason his performances were under the microscope, was the enormous £325k-per-week wages he was on, more than anyone in the squad, earning around £16.9m per year. His levels did not represent that outlay, especially when you consider last season, where Cole Palmer, who earned just £80k-per-week, scored 25 goals and provided 15 assists.
Another forward who provided far more than Sterling last season, was Nicolas Jackson, who was on £65k-per-week, and managed to score 17 goals in 44 appearances, also providing six assists in his 3,534 minutes played.
Jackson & Palmer's current form
Both Jackson and Palmer were rewarded with pay rises at the start of this term, with Jackson now earning £100k-per-week, and Palmer now earning £130k-per-week. Even with these pay increases, their combined wages (£230k-per-week) are still nearly £100k less than what Sterling was raking in each week, for performances nowhere near the levels of Jackson and Palmer.
This campaign has been no different, with both Jackson and Palmer starting in red-hot form. The 23-year-old Senegalese forward has already scored six goals, and provided three assists in his ten appearances this season, whilst the English superstar has scored seven times, and provided five assists in his 11 outings.
The duo is starting to form an excellent relationship, which has been further enhanced by the decision from Enzo Maresca to move Palmer permanently central, playing as the number ten, often much closer to Jackson, in order for the pair to link up.
Jackson’s willingness to run in behind, run the channels, and play quick combinations brings the best out of Palmer, allowing him to make those killer passes in behind, and get into more shooting positions himself, allowing both players to increase their output for both goals and assists.
Sterling vs Jackson vs Palmer comparison
Over his two seasons at Chelsea, Sterling cost the club around £81m, with his £47.5m transfer fee plus the £16.9m per year of wages. When you compare this to the combined outlay of Palmer (£40m fee plus £4.1m yearly wage for the 2023/24 season) and Jackson (£32m fee plus £3.3m yearly wage for the 2023/24 season), the performances of Sterling were unacceptable.

Sterling only outranked Jackson and Palmer in one metric, providing the most progressive carries per 90 of the trio. However, this is down to the position of Sterling, playing as a left-winger, whilst Palmer played centrally, and as a right-winger (who still drifted central), and Jackson played as the striker, with fewer chances to progress play.
We have already touched on the higher output levels of both Palmer and Jackson, but the pair also provided more shots per 90, and more shots on target per 90. Considering Jackson is a striker too, he is extremely close to Sterling in metrics such as key passes and shot-creating actions, where wingers are often expected to provide more than the striker in most systems.
Sterling has now been sent on loan to Arsenal from Chelsea, as the Blues are prioritising minutes for other wingers, such as new signings, Jadon Sancho and Pedro Neto, as well as Noni Madueke and Mykhailo Mudryk, who were already at the club.
The 29-year-old has scored once and assisted once for the Gunners in his eight appearances, only managing 333 minutes so far, with the likes of Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, and Leandro Trossard all being preferred in wide areas by Mikel Arteta.
Chelsea will have Sterling returning in the summer of 2025, and will have to deal with him then, with those high wages likely to play a factor in how easily they can find willing suitors for the ex-England international.

England face tantalising prospect of setting a tricky target if they can weather Australia’s next barrage
Andrew McGlashan10-Dec-2021The new ball never came into the equation in England’s first innings, but both teams know it shapes as a potentially crucial period on the fourth day at the Gabba after Joe Root and Dawid Malan ate significantly into Australia’s advantage. There will be 10 overs to go in the morning with England 58 behind and the tantalising prospect that if they can weather the next barrage from Australia’s three frontline quicks that they could yet set a tricky final-innings target. When Root won the toss and opted to bat he noted that the pitch was starting slightly soft and he thought it may cause indentations that could become tricky. Malan indicated that was happening – Root himself was hit by a vicious delivery from Pat Cummins that climbed from a length – although the paltry 147 and a deficit of 278 gave them a mountain to climb to exploit it.Related

“It has hardened up a little and a few more divots,” Malan said. “There’s that big period now and then that second new ball is going to be crucial for them and hopefully we can counter that.”It has got a little more inconsistent… there’s really big divots in the wicket. It’s still coming through really nicely but it’s slightly two-paced and the odd one hits the back of a divot and bounces a bit more. It’s a little bit tougher to judge the bounce.”That first hour will be really important tomorrow then we can start thinking about how well we can play. But we need one more good hundred-run partnership to put a good score on the board, then who knows what can happen.”Dawid Malan ducks under a bouncer•Getty Images
There were eyebrows raised that Josh Hazlewood was only used for eight overs on the third day – particularly given his record against Root who he has dismissed eight times – but the indication from the Australia camp was that it was with an eye on that second new ball even though he was not used beyond the 29th over.”Hoff’s fine. We’re just making sure we’re prepared really well,” Marnus Labuschagne said. “We know that there’s some times at the Gabba where there’s not as many wickets that fall and we’ve just got to hold in that period and make sure we rotate our bowlers well so we’ve got someone fresh.”With home-ground knowledge of the Gabba, Labuschagne remained confident that Australia would be able to break the back of England.”I certainly think there’s enough in the pitch,” he said. “If they keep batting well and putting runs on then we’ll need to go to plan B,C and D but the key for us is building pressure. I’ve played a lot here at the Gabba, we know the format, we know the template to take wickets.”
Following the earlier exit of technical director Gretar Steinsson, the 49ers are reportedly set to lose yet another Leeds United chief to force a restructure away from the action at Elland Road.
Leeds set to off-pitch change
The Whites have only just lost Steinsson, as reported by The Athletic’s Nancy Froston, with the former technical director now set to transition into a new position with the 49ers’ operation. Those at Elland Road will reportedly replace the departed chief internally rather than seek a fresh option outside of the club. Whether that proves to be a wise decision remains to be seen, however.
His exit comes at a time when Leeds need stability in pursuit of promotion back to the Premier League at the second time of asking. Things are only set to become more complicated following Steinsson, however, with another departure reportedly on the cards.
According to TeamTalk, Leeds are now set to lose head of recruitment Jordan Miles amid a major reshuffle at Elland Road. Leaving the 49ers with plenty to think about, it will reportedly be football advisor and consultant Nick Hammond and football operations Adam Underwood who step up their respective roles and take more responsibility behind the scenes.
Journalist shares what he's heard out of Leeds on Manor Solomon's future
He’s yet to score for the club…
1 ByTom Cunningham Nov 8, 2024
Miles’ reported exit follows a difficult summer in which Leeds lost a number of key men and were forced to turn towards the transfer market. Welcoming the likes of Ao Tanaka and Largie Ramazani, Miles could consider the window job done amid such difficulties in what proved to be his final flurry of signings at the club.
Leeds reshuffle comes at a bad time
If Leeds were to undergo such change then they should have done so before the Championship season or summer transfer window had a chance to get underway. Now running the risk of turning the attention away from Daniel Farke’s side, the 49ers must hope to have got things right. On the recruitment front, the Whites’ most difficult task came in the summer, but that doesn’t take away from the importance of the January transfer window.
If Farke’s side still find themselves behind in the race for automatic promotion by the time that the winter window arrives, then Hammon and Underwood should be tasked with reinforcing the Leeds squad.
Already, the likes of Lewis O’Brien have been linked with moves to Elland Road in 2025 in what could quickly become the first task on the list of those now in charge of recruitment in Yorkshire. The midfielder is currently on loan from Nottingham Forest at American outfit LAFC where he has discovered his best form to earn the attention of English football once again.
Another midfielder would certainly be a wise addition, but it remains to be seen whether Leeds’ reshuffle will enjoy such success on the recruitment front without Steinsson or Miles.
