Crowning moment or anticlimax? Warwickshire, Lancashire square off for Bob Willis honours

County champions must regather to go again in standalone showpiece at Lord’s

Matt Roller27-Sep-2021

Big pictureCounty cricket rarely needs a trigger for an existential crisis but this week’s Bob Willis Trophy final willingly obliges. The fixture, played between the teams finishing first (Warwickshire) and second (Lancashire) in the County Championship, is essentially a compromise between those who support an end-of-season final which ensures greater broadcast and media coverage and those who argue that the Championship must be decided through a league system, with the strongest team across the whole competition rewarded rather than the one which turns up in a one-off game. As a result, Warwickshire are county champions but will compete for a bonus piece of silverware over the next five days. The problem is that this solution suits nobody. This week’s final drags the season into October and looks certain to be spoiled by rain, while games at Lord’s have been the low-scoring in the Championship this year and fans of the two counties can hardly be expected to book time off work and hotels in London at four days’ notice. Reports suggest that most counties favour a return to two divisions either next summer or the following year, and it would be no great shame if this fixture fell by the wayside as an indirect result. The game is essentially cricket’s version of the Community Shield, but tacked on to the end of a season rather than raising the curtain for a new one. Naming a trophy in honour of Bob Willis and using the week as an opportunity to raise awareness about charities was a worthy idea but the prize would surely hold more weight and purpose as a replacement for the anachronistic MCC vs Champion County game than with both sets of players secretly wishing they were spending the week on the beach.Related

Warwickshire seal Championship glory as Somerset are overwhelmed

Vilas seals win to leave Lancs sweating on Edgbaston result

Warwickshire in particular are on a hiding to nothing. Celebrations on Friday after their final-day win against Somerset at Edgbaston are unlikely to have served as ideal preparation and the absence of Chris Woakes, rested ahead of a busy winter, is a further blow. They were worthy champions after an impressive season under Mark Robinson: victory this week might add a cherry to the cake but anything less would serve as an anticlimax.”There were a few grumblings that we’ve got to play another game and it might tarnish what we’ve achieved,” Will Rhodes, their captain, admitted. “It is quite strange, really. But you don’t often get to come to Lord’s and play a final so that is all the motivation that we need at the minute. To have two trophies in the cabinet rather than one would make it extra special.”Lancashire, meanwhile, have a free shot. Josh Bohannon, their leading run-scorer this season who made 170 in the drawn fixture between the sides in Division One, admitted there would “still be some hurt when we get to Lord’s” after the squad followed Somerset’s collapse in the pub together last week, the day after their dramatic one-wicket win against Hampshire at Aigburth. He also recognised the opportunity for players to “showcase their skills” in a televised game; for Bohannon, a bald Boltonian whose unflashy attributes do not lend themselves to fawning coverage, a good week in front of the Sky cameras could provide a key moment in his career. In the spotlightAlex Davies’ impending move to Warwickshire was confirmed in midsummer and only a month ago it looked as though he had played his last game for Lancashire, the county through whose academy he developed, when he was left out for the Championship fixture between the two teams. He made a pair on his return to the side against Nottinghamshire but his free-swinging fourth-innings 44 at Aigburth last week proved crucial and he has been included in the squad for a farewell appearance against the county he will join in a few weeks’ time.Dom Sibley has scored useful runs since being dropped by England•Getty Images

Dom Sibley admitted last week that when he joined Warwickshire in 2017, his focus was not on domestic silverware: “I just wanted to play for England,” he said. But after hearing international team-mates reminisce about Championship wins and celebrations he “started to get a bit jealous” and after he was dropped two Tests into the India series, he was sent a text by Tim Bresnan telling him, “there’s a Championship to win here – get your head on”. A series of middling scores – five between 45 and 57 in eight innings – were frustrating personally but set the team up well and Sibley should relish the scrutiny of a showpiece game, not least with an Ashes squad to be selected imminently.Team newsWoakes has been rested by the ECB after back-to-back appearances at the end of the Championship season, with an eye on the T20 World Cup and the Ashes. Chemar Holder, who was expensive in his first two games as an overseas player, is not in the squad after picking up a niggle against Hampshire, with Oliver Hannon-Dalby, Olly Stone and Henry Brookes also out injured. Seamers Ryan Sidebottom, George Garrett and Manraj Johal are in consideration, with a late call to be made on the fitness of Craig Miles and Liam Norwell after long seasons.Warwickshire (possible): 1 Dom Sibley, 2 Rob Yates, 3 Will Rhodes (capt), 4 Sam Hain, 5 Matthew Lamb, 6 Michael Burgess (wk), 7 Tim Bresnan, 8 Danny Briggs, 9 Ryan Sidebottom/George Garrett/Manraj Johal, 10 Liam Norwell, 11 Craig MilesLuke Wood returned to the Lancashire side for the Hampshire fixture after a side strain and it remains to be seen if he is risked for back-to-back games. George Balderson’s inclusion as an opening batter and fourth (or even fifth) seamer has helped balance the side while Jack Blatherwick impressed after he was handed an opportunity in Division One. Liam Livingstone is in the UAE playing in the IPL, Keaton Jennings and Saqib Mahmood are injured, and Jos Buttler and James Anderson will be rested by the England management.Lancashire (possible): 1 George Balderson, 2 Alex Davies (wk), 3 Luke Wells, 4 Josh Bohannon, 5 Dane Vilas (capt), 6 Steven Croft, 7 Danny Lamb 8 Luke Wood, 9 Jack Blatherwick, 10 Tom Bailey, 11 Matt ParkinsonStats and trivia Tom Bailey is the only bowler on either side to take 50 Championship wickets in 2021, reaching the landmark thanks to his 7 for 37 in the second innings against Hampshire. Rob Yates is one of four players (Ben Brown, Chris Cooke and Jake Libby are the others) to score four Championship hundreds this season. The last player to score as many in a Championship season before turning 23 was Ollie Pope in 2018. Championship games at Lord’s have seen 20.76 runs scored per wicket this season, the fewest of any ground in the country where multiple fixtures have been staged. The Bob Willis Trophy is proud to support the Alzheimer’s Society’s ‘Sport United Against Dementia’ campaign. Club ready to sell attacker for under £10m as West Ham eye bargain move

West Ham United chiefs sense a potential bargain transfer opportunity, with one club now ready to sell their attacking gem for under £10 million.

West Ham's rumoured transfer plans for January and next summer

Technical director Tim Steidten moved to back new manager Julen Lopetegui with nine major signings over the summer window, investing a near-£120 million in centre-back Maximilian Kilman, winger Crysencio Summerville, striker Niclas Fullkrug, Brazilian Luis Guilherme, defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka, goalkeeper Wes Foderingham, Guido Rodriguez, Jean-Clair Todibo and Carlos Soler.

However, following a fairly mixed start to the new season for Lopetegui, not to mention Fullkrug’s injury and the fact a couple of senior forwards will be out of contract next summer, highlights the need for more attacking options.

Both Michail Antonio and Danny Ings could leave the club for free in 2025, potentially leading to West Ham’s interest in Eintracht Frankfurt star Omar Marmoush.

The Egypt striker has been nothing short of a revelation so far this season – bagging nine goals and six assists in just nine appearances across all competitions – with reports suggesting West Ham have drawn fresh plans to sign Marmoush.

Meanwhile, it is also believed West Ham are prepared to bid for Lyon forward Rayan Cherki, as Lopetegui casts his eye on alternative attacking midfield options in the final third. Besiktas playmaker Ernest Muci and AC Milan winger Samuel Chukwueze are also thought to be targets for the Hammers board, so it will be intriguing to see which faces could arrive at the London Stadium in January or next summer.

West Ham’s recent 4-1 victory over Ipswich Town was their first in all competitions since late August, indicating that there is still plenty of work to do as they rebuild the squad post-David Moyes.

Vasco de Gama ready to sell Rayan Vitor as West Ham eye move

According to The Boot Room, Brazilian gem Rayan Vitor, currently plying his trade with Vaso de Gama in the Brasileiro, is now on the east Londoners’ radar.

The left-footed winger, who TBR compare to West Ham superstar Jarrod Bowen, is also being chased by Brentford, Brighton and Hove Albion, Crystal Palace, Fulham and Nottingham Forest – so he’s a man in demand at Premier League sides.

West Ham are eyeing a move for Rayan Vitor, with Vasco also said to be ready to accept an £8.5 million bid for his services. The teenager is very highly rated by his peers too, having been praised for his physicality in particular.

“What we tell the youth players is that from the moment they step into the professional ranks, they have to be held accountable as professional players,” said Vasco interim coach Rafael Paiva.

“He is a player with experience, a lot of physical ability. He is powerful, has a very strong finish, and he is a player who has just been called up to the Brazilian under-20 team. And we saw that he evolved in this process.

“He was unfortunate once again with his mistake [against Palmeiras]. A mistake that, at this level of play, costs him dearly. It cost us our defeat. But he has to be held accountable just like any professional player. And he has the technical, tactical and physical ability to withstand professional play.”

O’Neil could ditch Forbs by unleashing "lightening" Wolves gem

Wolverhampton Wanderers face no respite following an incredibly tough start to the 2024/25 campaign as they face Manchester City today in the Premier League.

The Old Gold currently occupy the bottom spot in the league table, and it will likely remain that way unless they can somehow grab all three points at Molineux this afternoon.

The odds are against Gary O’Neil, there is no doubting that, but he did lead his side to victory against City last term. A repeat of that performance could go a long way to easing the pressure on the underfire boss.

Having suffered a 5-3 defeat to Brentford last time out, the manager will likely make a change or two. This could see winger Carlos Forbs drop to the bench after a poor display.

Carlos Forbs' stats vs Brentford

The winger started the clash against the Bees but failed to offer anything meaningful going forward. He may have made two key passes and delivered an accurate cross during his spell on the field, yet the Portuguese gem lost possession six times.

He also failed to register a single shot during his 68 minutes on the pitch, while he was dribbled past once and completed only 15 passes.

Knowing that three points were required to lift the club off bottom spot, it was hardly the performance O’Neil expected, thus changes could be made ahead of the match against City.

This could see Forbs dropped from the starting XI, with a fellow compatriot being unleashed from the very start – Goncalo Guedes.

Why Goncalo Guedes must start for Wolves vs Man City

Guedes was sent on loan spells to both Benfica and Villarreal last term, scoring just three goals all season.

O’Neil gave him a chance in the first-team squad and has been repaid with three goals in just six games, although none of those have come in the top flight.

Goncalo Guedes

Journalist Andy Brassell lauded Guedes when he joined Wolves back in the summer of 2022, saying: “For Wolves I think Guedes will be absolutely fantastic, they need that little bit of extra bang up front, maybe they could be in a bit of trouble if they’re not scoring goals.

“He’s someone who can play as a striker or as a winger, lightning quick, on his day as good as it gets.”

Although he may not have showcased these talents during his stint so far, Guedes may be a better option against City than Forbs.

During his two League Cup games, Guedes scored three goals, created one big chance and averaged 1.5 key passes per game.

The winger has yet to start a match in the Premier League this term, but given how imperative three points is this weekend, perhaps O’Neil will have no option but to take a few risks.

Chalkboard

If Guedes does get on the scoresheet, it could be the boost he needs ahead of a crucial run of fixtures for the Old Gold.

Zeeshan Maqsood rues Jatinder Singh's dismissal, but happy to have put Bangladesh 'under pressure'

The Oman captain was hopeful they can overcome Scotland to make the Super 12s

Oman captain Zeeshan Maqsood said that had Jatinder Singh’s sweep shot, at the end of the 13th over, gone to a slightly different direction, they were genuine contenders to upset Bangladesh. Instead Liton Das took the easy catch, giving Bangladesh the advantage of having two new batters at the crease.Bangladesh bowled better in the last seven overs, rounding up the game by 26 runs, and keeping themselves alive in the T20 World Cup. Oman, too, are in contention for a Super 12s spot, but their last match against Scotland on Thursday is now a knockout game (if Bangladesh beat Papua New Guinea in the earlier match).”We were in the game till the 14th over,” Maqsood said. “I am happy the way we put up a fight. Bangladesh were under pressure. They knew if we had one or two 15-plus overs, the game was ours. But we didn’t bat well in the last five or six overs. We lost a lot of wickets. I am happy with the way the bowlers did. We restricted them to 153. We have to improve [our] fielding. We didn’t field well in the first ten overs, for the second time in a row.”Jatinder, who made 40 to follow up his half-century against PNG, kept Oman in the hunt chasing 154. He struck the ball sweetly, especially against pace, but was equally adept against spin. Maqsood rued his dismissal, but said that he can’t be blamed for the shot.”Jatinder was batting very well against the likes of Shakib. He found the fielder in the deep unfortunately. It happens. We can’t say anything to the players. They are trying their best for the team,” he said.Maqsood said that Jatinder got into great form in the last 18 months, although he is the sort of character who doesn’t get fussed by low scores as well. “Jatinder is in good nick. He batted very well in the last game (against PNG) also. We fully back him to play the way he is playing right now. We are happy to see how he is batting against a Test side.”He is a very positive player. He improved in the last one and a half year. Credit goes to him and the coaches. He is getting the reward of his hard work. Jatin is a naughty person. Always happy. Even when he doesn’t get runs, he is not too worried. We help each other in the team,” he said.Maqsood was hopeful that they can overcome Scotland on Thursday, especially after running Bangladesh close in their second game.”It is a do-or-die game. We have a bit of an advantage on home soil. The way we played today as well, we are fully confident. We have to play positive cricket to beat Scotland, but it won’t be easy. They are playing well also.”Qualifying (to the Super 12s) will be a huge achievement for Oman. The group is open, but the net run rate margin is very little between the three sides. We will go through if we win the game,” he said.

Everton have found a star who’s even better than Gordon was at Goodison

Everton have enjoyed a much-needed resurgence in recent weeks, and it is all thanks to several of their players for taking that step up and performing when it matters.

Sean Dyche will be hoping this form can continue over the next few weeks as he seeks to take the Merseyside club further away from the Premier League relegation places.

If Saturday’s goalscorer Iliman Ndiaye can maintain his current form, then more wins should be on the horizon…

Iliman Ndiaye’s season in numbers

The forward joined Everton in the summer for a fee in the region of £15m, with the move looking like a wonderful piece of business by the manager already.

The Senegal striker has already notched two goals for the club this term, with the most recent one coming against Ipswich Town over the weekend, helping the Toffees to a simple 2-0 win.

Along with the goals, Ndiaye has also created a big chance, averaged 0.6 key passes per game and has succeeded with two dribbles per match, showcasing his talents in other areas.

He is swiftly becoming one of the most important players in the current squad, as Dyche is getting the best out of the former Marseille star who has already thrived in England with Sheffield United.

That said, there’s perhaps one player who has shown himself to be even more important to the Everton cause. Together with Ndiaye, they’re banishing any lingering regrets over Anthony Gordon’s departure.

Why Everton aren't missing Gordon

Gordon emerged from the Everton youth academy to make his debut during the 2017/18 season, before establishing himself as a first-team regular from 2019 onwards.

Before his move to Newcastle in 2023, Gordon had made 78 appearances for the Toffees, scoring seven times, but it was clear that an offer of £45m was too good to turn down for the youngster. So, who’s helping the club to forget all about him? Dwight McNeil, of course.

everton-anthony-gordon

Despite Everton’s position in the table, they’ve had a number of high class performers and McNeil certainly fits into that category having taken his game to the next level in a bid to lead the club to the top half of the table.

McNeil has played 12 more games for Everton than Gordon, but he has double the number of goals (14 vs seven) and five more assists (13 vs eight), which suggests that the former Burnley man could end up being far better than Gordon ever was for the Goodison Park side.
