Leeds United went into the first international break of the 2024/25 campaign after a mixed start to the season under Daniel Farke in all competitions.
The Whites kicked off the term with a dramatic 3-3 draw with newly-promoted side Portsmouth at Elland Road on the opening day of the Championship.
That was followed up by a dismal 3-0 defeat to Middlesbrough in the League Cup, which ended the club's involvement in cup competitions until the second half of the season.
They were then held to a 0-0 draw by West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns, as they went winless across their first three matches of the campaign.
However, they have turned their fortunes around in the last two games, with 2-0 wins against both Sheffield Wednesday and Hull City prior to the break.
Farke will now be hoping that team can continue that run of wins when his players return from their respective countries to face Burnley at Elland Road on Saturday.
One player who has had a strong international break so far, and a fantastic start to the season with Leeds, is centre-forward Mateo Joseph.
Mateo Joseph's impressive start to the season
The Whites academy graduate had not started a single league game at first-team level in his career prior to the 2024/25 campaign, with all 20 of his Championship appearances last term coming as a substitute.
Despite his lack of experience as a starter, Farke has placed his faith in the Spanish youngster to be the first-choice number nine for Leeds ahead of Patrick Bamford and Joel Piroe.
Joseph has started all four of the club's matches in the Championship so far this term and caught the eye with his contributions in the final third.

As you can see in the table above, the 20-year-old marksman has been directly involved in three goals in four outings in the second tier so far.
The young ace scored his first goal of the season in the 2-0 win over Hull last time out for Leeds, as the striker got across his marker to poke Manor Solomon's cross into the back of the net.
Joseph went away with Spain for U21 duty this week and came off the bench to score the winning goal against Scotland in a 2-1 victory for his country, which means that he has produced two goals and two assists in five games for club and country.
He is an incredibly promising centre-forward who looks set for a big future in West Yorkshire, given his emergence this season, and Farke will be hoping that the gem can continue to develop and improve over the weeks, months, and years to come.
The German head coach deserves credit for giving him an opportunity as former Whites boss Marcelo Bielsa once allowed his own version of Joseph – Rafa Mujica – to leave for nothing.
Leeds fumbled Rafa Mujica
In the summer of 2019, the West Yorkshire outfit moved to snap up the talented marksman on a free transfer from LaLiga side Barcelona, after his contract with the Spanish giants expired.
The young centre-forward had plundered seven goals in 33 appearances for Barcelona B during the 2018/19 campaign, and that return was enough to tempt the English outfit into swooping for him that summer.
He joined as a development player, however, and did not slot straight into Bielsa's first-team squad, as Bamford led the line and helped the team to win the Championship title in the 2019/20 season.
Former Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa.
This meant that Mujica had to go down the loan route, instead of pushing for a place in the senior team, and that resulted in loan moves to Extremadura, Villarreal CF B, Real Oviedo, and UD Las Palmas.
The Spain U19 international eventually left Leeds to sign for Las Palmas on a free transfer in the summer of 2021, after two years and zero first-team appearances at Elland Road.
After one year with the Spanish side as a permanent addition, Liga Portugal outfit Arouca swooped to sign him and he has thrived as a player ever since.
Why Mujica could have been Bielsa's own Joseph
The former Leeds prospect's form since moving on from Yorkshire suggests that the club lost a player with the player to be a breakthrough star from the academy, as Joseph has been this season.
Mujica plundered 14 goals and one assist in 32 appearances for Arouca in all competitions during the 2022/23 campaign, one year after his move away from England, and that included eight goals in the Portuguese top-flight.
The 25-year-old star stepped his game up again in the following season, with a return of 23 goals and four assists in 36 outings for the Portuguese side in all competitions.

As you can see in the table above, Mujica outperformed Bamford and Piroe as a goalscorer at league level in the 2023/24 campaign, whilst playing in the top division in Portugal.
His impressive form for Arouca caught the eye of Qatar-based outfit Al-Sadd and they swooped to sign the 25-year-old ace on a permanent deal this summer.
It was reported that they secured his services for a fee of €10m (£8.4m) and this illustrates how much of an error Leeds made by allowing him to move on for nothing in 2021.
Mujica, who has scored five goals in his first three matches for Al-Sadd, has plundered an incredible 25 goals in 33 league games since the start of last season, which shows that he is a clinical and lethal centre-forward who knows how to find the back of the net on a regular basis.
Cost £24.5m: Orta endured Leeds nightmare with flop who's now a free agent
The Whites had a difficult time with this piece of business, for a multitude of reasons.
1 ByDan Emery Sep 7, 2024
He could have showcased those qualities at Elland Road, if given an opportunity, but Bielsa did not opt to present him with that chance, which meant that the Argentine head coach ultimately lost his own Joseph by allowing him to leave for nothing.
Review will address historical issues, remind players of responsibilities and “help them learn”

The ECB has announced a “social media review” after admitting the sport’s attempts to prove itself inclusive have been “severely diminished” following the emergence of a series of historic tweets by players. The episode was sparked by the re-emergence of comments made by Ollie Robinson on Twitter when he was aged 18 and 19. The tweets, which included sexist and racist material, came to prominence on Robinson’s first day as a Test player and jarred with the team’s commitment to combatting discrimination. In the following days, numerous further historic tweets from high-profile players came to light which also looked at odds with the standards and values expressed by the current England team and ECB executive.Coming at a time when the sport is desperate to promote a more inclusive image, it left the ECB board admitting in a statement on Saturday that its “aspiration to become a more inclusive and welcoming sport for all” was “severely diminished whilst discriminatory content remains in the social media space”.The ECB board therefore confirmed a social media review designed to “address any historical issues, remind individuals of their personal responsibilities going forward, and help them learn lessons along the way”.Related

The statement went on to say that the ECB will work with various other bodies, including the Professional Cricketers’ Association (PCA) to agree the terms of reference for a review. Further disciplinary action has not been ruled out, but the statement hints that education will be the key tool of progress.”Making cricket a game for everyone is central to the game’s ‘Inspiring Generations’ strategy,” Ian Watmore, the ECB chair, said. “Celebrating our many brilliant role models in men’s, women’s and disability cricket is essential to that aim, and the right use of social media is a critical means for achieving it.”As the national governing body, we must steer a path between helping individuals project an inclusive image, educating them on what is expected of them and allowing them the space to express themselves to the public. We must also investigate their actions and sanction them when they fall short.”The board was unanimous in support of the [ECB] executive in the actions taken by them in the last week and agrees with their plans to move the game forward in a spirit of inclusion, education and personal responsibility, whilst addressing those cases which cause most offence head on.”There was also an admission from Rob Lynch, the PCA chief executive, that “there is always more we can do”. Current arrangements see the PCA advise players on their social media content and monitor the Twitter and Instagram accounts of current England players. There is no system of reviewing historic posts.”We are committed to working with our members and the ECB on further education and there is always more that we can do,” Lynch said. “We will consult with our members and work with the ECB to develop terms of reference for a social media review, which in turn, will lead to better insight and an opportunity to improve.”Our commitment, as always in times like this is to ensure the ECB process is fair and considered and to offer support, advice, and education to all of our members.”

Oval Invincibles captain excited by new format and opportunities for young players to learn
Matt Roller21-Jul-2021Sam Billings has challenged Jason Roy and Will Jacks to emulate Brendon McCullum’s famous 158 not out on the opening night of the IPL when they open the batting for Oval Invincibles together in the first men’s fixture of the Hundred on Thursday night.McCullum’s innings against Royal Challengers Bangalore set the tone for the tournament’s success as he hit 10 fours and 13 sixes to launch it into mainstream attention back in 2008, and Billings – who will captain the Invincibles against Manchester Originals – said that the occasion would provide Roy and Jacks, their likely opening partnership, with an opportunity to do the same for the Hundred.”I would definitely like to be the guy but I think we’ve got quite a few guys in the dressing room who will want to be that main man,” Billings said. “We’ve seen what Jason can obviously in the T20Is [against Pakistan]. He’s done it for a long time and he does enjoy being the main guy. As an opening batter, like McCullum, he provides the fireworks.”Will Jacks has been in the form of his life for Surrey. It could really be that launchpad for him: first men’s game, showcased at The Oval. It’ll be really exciting to see what he can do and catapult himself to another level. That’s what we’ll see throughout the tournament, these young guys, against the best players in the world. Anyone can make a name for themselves, and how good is that?”Billings’ own preparation for the tournament has hardly been ideal – he was one of the England limited-overs players to test positive for Covid-19 after the third ODI against Sri Lanka, sending the whole squad into self-isolation – but the time he has spent away from the game has given him the opportunity to make some plans for the Invincibles’ campaign. He caught up with Tom Moody, the Invincibles’ head coach and Sri Lanka’s director of cricket, during the international series at the start of the month, and the pair have been in regular contact for a number of weeks to discuss tactics and selection – as well as finding a last-minute replacement for Sandeep Lamichhane, in the form of Tabraiz Shamsi.”Over the next couple of days it’ll be interesting to get the thoughts of the other guys and how the team view the new format,” he said. “We’re the first men’s game to give it a go and the teams that will progress are the ones that will learn quickly. It’s still cricket, isn’t it? The fundamentals of the game don’t change.”It’s incredibly exciting because we’ve had to wait for so long, really. We were talking in the changing room just now and saying it’s a really cool new environment. It’s a franchise competition essentially, where you have a real mix of people you don’t normally play with and normally play against. Guys like Sunil Narine. Colin Ingram… it’s been brilliant.Related

Sandeep Lamichhane asks ECB for 'clear answer' after visa issues scupper his Hundred plans
“Especially for guys who haven’t necessarily had that exposure around the world in those competitions, it’s going to be so good for them and everyone will learn so much. I’ve benefited from being in those environments hugely over the last few years. Someone like Jordan Cox, an exciting talent I’ve spent a lot of time with at Kent, he could really fly on the back of being around this experience.”The best thing about it is the whole competition is being launched by the women’s game – that’s on Wednesday and we’ll all be tuning into that. There are definitely things we can pick up from that, certain tactical decisions that will or won’t work. It’s an advantage to have a sneak preview – it can only be a good thing for us. We are one team, two squads, but one team. Being aligned with the women’s game is huge for the sport and what we want to do moving forward.”Billings also suggested that the Invincibles might have picked up the bargain signing of the whole competition: Saqib Mahmood, who was snapped up for £60,000 in February’s re-draft after failing to agree personal terms with Manchester Originals. Mahmood starred in England’s ODI series win against Pakistan last week, and Billings expects him to continue his form in the Hundred.”Saq and I did a Lions trip together to Dubai about three years ago against Pakistan A,” Billings said. “[Mohammad] Rizwan was playing and Saqi was the best bowler. He bowls with genuine heat, very very skilful and it’s great to see him showcasing what he can do. It’s just been a matter of opportunity and having a run of games.”Everyone knows international cricket is really tough, particularly when you’re playing sporadic games, so for him to get a run of games and dominate the way he has is great. He’s mentioned the PSL and how he’s benefited from playing as an overseas player and how it’s helped his development. Why can’t a lot of our young guys over here benefit in the same way?”
Newcastle United sporting director Paul Mitchell is believed to have sent club officials to watch a “fearless” player in action on several occasions, as they consider making a move for him.
Unrest in Newcastle's transfer departement
While the Magpies have made a relatively strong start to the season in terms of points on board in the Premier League, there is a current feeling of unrest at St James’ Park.
That’s due in part to the reported strained relationship between Eddie Howe and Mitchell, who are struggling to see eye to see in their respective roles as manager and sporting director. In fact, a recent report has claimed that the latter could be sacked first, should the situation not improve between the pair.
Meanwhile, Newcastle’s 3-1 defeat away to Fulham in the league on Saturday was a dreadful day at the office, with journalist Luke Edwards lambasting the performance of Anthony Gordon, in particular, describing him as “shocking”, adding that it was “easily” his poorest display for the club.
After an underwhelming summer transfer window at St James’, supporters are desperate for fresh faces to arrive soon, and it looks as though Mitchell is doing his best to make that happen, following a fresh update.
Mitchell sends Newcastle officials to watch 20 y/o winger
According to HITC, Mitchell has ensured that Newcastle have had scouts sent to watch Burnley youngster Luca Koleosho in action multiple times, as they eye a move for him. The Magpies are said to have “joined the chase” for the 20-year-old, who has enjoyed a good start to the season for the Clarets, scoring twice in five Championship appearances.
They are far from the only club keen on signing the attacker, however, with Aston Villa, Brighton, Nottingham Forest and Crystal Palace all mentioned as suitors, too.
Koleosho may not be the world-renowned name that Newcastle fans will be wanting the club to sign moving forward, but he is an extremely gifted young footballer who could mature into something special over time.
The winger has been capped by both the USA and Italy at youth international level, winning a combined tally of 14 caps, and he has now once again switched his allegiance, this time to Canada. Meanwhile, former Burnley manager Vincent Kompany spoke of his admiration for him during their time working together.
“He’s just a fearless player, it doesn’t really matter who he’s up against. He was up against a top full-back against Arsenal but he’s done it in every single game, because in every game he’s managed to create and make something happen.
“Against Arsenal it was also a better performance defensively for him because that’s something he can put in the memory bank and draw back on. He’s a player that is eager to show his talents in this league and he’s showing good signs.”

The allrounder is doubtful for Jamaica Tallawahs’ opening match on Friday

Carlos Brathwaite has been forced into isolation and is in doubt for Jamaica Tallawahs’ opening match of the Caribbean Premier League on Friday after a positive Covid-19 case was reported on his flight from the UK to St Kitts and Nevis.Brathwaite travelled from Manchester to Basseterre ahead of the CPL after captaining Manchester Originals in the Hundred. A fellow passenger tested positive for Covid-19 and he was told to isolate until further notice.”My tests have been negative as far as I know,” Brathwaite said. “We’ve been asked to be in quarantine. I still don’t know the full extent of it. I’ve just been told I need to continue to quarantine as opposed to being allowed to walk around the hotel as was initially allowed. So I’m just as much in the dark as you are, unfortunately.”Related

Speaking from his hotel room following the announcement that he re-signed with Sydney Sixers for the upcoming BBL season later in the year, the allrounder said he was unsure whether he would be available for the Tallawahs’ opening clash with Saint Lucia Kings on Friday.”Not sure,” Brathwaite said. “I haven’t actually received anything official yet to know when day one is and how many days of quarantine, etc. So yeah, I’m just skipping in my room and doing sit-ups and hoping to be at least physically ready to go if I can.”Brathwaite was retained by Tallawahs along with Andre Russell after they were knocked out in last season’s semi-final by eventual champions Trinbago Knight Riders. He believes Knight Riders won’t have it all their own way this season.”The tournament is going to be interesting,” Brathwaite said. “I don’t think it will be an undefeated run to the finals as Trinidad had last year. I think it will be a little closer. I think all the teams are more evenly matched.”Brathwaite said runs from the top order will be key to Tallawahs’ chances given the quality of the allrounders and spin-bowling.”I feel as though we have a few potential match-winners. Myself, Russell, Rovman Powell obviously in the middle. Our spin attack, we’ve lost Mujeeb and we’ve lost Sandeep but we have Qais Ahmad, Veerasammy Permaul, and Chris Green. So when you look at it that’s a real balanced spin attack, left-arm orthodox, right-arm offspinner, leg-break bowler.”I think we just need to get some runs at the top of the ordr and middle order to provide a good platform. I think too many times last year we were 30 for 3, 40 for 4 and we didn’t really have a good platform to go on and get big scores.”So this year, setting a good platform and if we add the firepower that I know myself, Russell and Rovman can give, added with the spin stocks that we have and the whole bowling unit actually, I think we’ll do well.”
It has been revealed what Paul Mitchell told Newcastle United staff during an early summer meeting which didn’t involve Eddie Howe, following reported issues surrounding their relationship.
Rumoured Mitchell and Howe feud at Newcastle
The Magpies may have picked up a credible 1-1 draw at home to Manchester City in the Premier League last weekend, bouncing back after the 3-1 defeat away to Fulham, but all is not well away from the pitch at St James’ Park currently.
The relationship between sporting director Mitchell and manager Howe is believed to be strained, to put it lightly, with the pair failing to see eye to eye amid issues regarding Newcastle’s summer transfer business, almost taking little public digs at one another.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe
It has been claimed recently that the transfer guru could lose his job before the manager, should push come to shove among the board, but there has also been some hope that clear-the-air talks would rectify the issues between them.
Newcastle’s performances on the pitch have been below-par this season, even though their points tally is relatively healthy, and it could certainly be argued that the Mitchell and Howe situation isn’t helping matters at all, failing to bring a togetherness between two of the most high-profile figures at the club.
Fresh Mitchell and Howe revelation at Newcastle
According to a new report from Football Insider, Mitchell told Newcastle staff that he was in charge instead of Howe when he arrived in his role during the summer, in what represents something of a bombshell revelation.
It is claimed that those involved in the meeting were left “stunned” by the former Monaco sporting director’s comments, with the update adding that Howe being absent from the meeting “raised red flags among the staff, with many beginning to question who was truly in charge at St James’ Park”.
Eddie Howe and Newcastle players applaud fans
This has done little to ease the tension at Newcastle at the moment, at a time when the club desperately need everyone to be pulling in the same direction. As mentioned, the Magpies’ seventh-place position in the Premier League suggests that things are running relatively smoothly, but their unconvincing displays mean they could easily be lower in the table, having arguably been outplayed by the likes of Wolves and Tottenham.
It’s hard to argue against the notion that Newcastle would be performing better if Mitchell and Howe were enjoying a strong working relationship, much like the manager did with former sporting director Dan Ashworth before he moved to Manchester United instead.
In terms of Mitchell’s comments, it is an extremely bold and reckless approach upon arriving at the club, hinting that that he was looking to win the power battle from minute one, but the reaction of the staff involved suggests that his comments didn’t go down too well.
Saved by Hall: Howe must immediately drop 6/10 Newcastle star
He didn’t offer much against Man City in the Premier League…
ByAngus Sinclair Sep 29, 2024
These coming weeks feel pivotal at Newcastle, and if Mitchell and Howe cannot come to a truce, it is surely only a matter of time before one is relieved of their duties.
