Farke could land the next Raphinha in Leeds swoop for "magical" gem

Leeds United fans will be pleased with how their side are doing out in Germany this pre-season watching from afar, having beaten a tricky test in the form of Schalke 2-0 last time out.

Joe Rothwell starred from the centre of the park in that friendly victory, playing Jayden Bogle into space to assist Mateo Joseph's opener in the behind closed doors clash, but it looks unlikely that the Whites will make do with their numbers centrally away from the addition of the AFC Bournemouth loanee.

Linked recently with a swoop for FC Koln man Dejan Ljubičić to bolster in these spots, the Championship promotion hopefuls are also keeping an eye on a player a lot closer to home, who starred in the EFL last campaign.

Leeds looking to sign Norwich City magician

According to a report by Italian outlet Correiro De Sport, as has been relayed by MOT Leeds News, Leeds are in the hunt for Norwich City ace Gabriel Sara this summer, as Serie A outfit Atalanta also remain keen on the Canaries star.

Leicester City, Crystal Palace and Galatasaray are further named as interested suitors, with an update from TeamTALK revealing that the Italian party could be out in front for the South American, seeing him as the best possible alternative to in-demand Celtic gem Matt O'Riley, if he doesn't move to Bergamo imminently.

Norwich midfielder Gabriel Sara.

Farke and Co will hope they can still come out on top, despite notable interest from a club that will be competing in the Champions League this forthcoming season, and find their next Raphinha in Sara, with the current Barcelona man a dazzling ace to watch from Brazil in his own right when at Elland Road.

Capable of also playing down the right flank, like Raphinha managed week in and week out in West Yorkshire, the 25-year-old could really strengthen Leeds' options in midfield, ahead of a potential promotion-winning term to follow.

How Sara can be Leeds' next Raphinha

Sara ended up having his own personal goal of the season competition in Norfolk last season, regularly smashing in audacious strikes like this one against Swansea City across the full dramatic campaign, with a ridiculous 27 goal contributions tallied up across all competitions by the end of the bumper schedule.

That is why so many suitors have put the £19k-per-week midfielder – as per Capology – top of their respective summer shopping lists, with Leeds wanting even more flair and creativity from midfield courtesy of the South American, knowing that Sara can play in the right midfield spot too if needed to give the Whites more options if Wilfried Gnonto was to up and leave.

From that right midfield spot for Norwich, Sara has shone – as can be seen looking at the table above – with his versatility also coming in handy if Leeds needed an extra body in defensive midfield or even down the left flank if times were desperate.

He will want to operate in an attacking role, however, with his 13 goals last season for the Canaries actually eclipsing Raphinha's best campaign haul of 11 when he was still on the books at Elland Road.

Like Sara – who has been described as "magical" by football analyst Ben Mattinson – however, the ex-Leeds maverick loved cannoning in a sublime strike from nowhere, as can be seen with this sumputous montage above.

Therefore, the current Norwich man might be expected to play in a similar role to that of an entertaining magician for the Whites if a move accelerates into motion.

It will be tough for Leeds to attract Sara to stay put in the Championship, especially with the allure of Serie A calling his name, but landing the slick midfield talent would be a huge statement about Leeds' intentions this season, with a desire to take the league by storm and not settle for another near miss.

Nathan Lyon faces a winter at home for the first time in his career

The offspinner won’t head to Hampshire in the off-season but still holds out hope of a WTC final

Alex Malcolm24-Feb-2021There aren’t many firsts left in professional cricket for Nathan Lyon. But after bringing up 100 Tests against India he faces the prospect of a full five-month pre-season in Australia ahead of next year’s Ashes for the first time in his professional career.Lyon had the opportunity to head to Hampshire for the 2021 County Championship season after his contract was cancelled for 2020 but he turned down the offer due to uncertainty over the pandemic. If Australia miss out on the World Test Championship final in June, then they won’t play Test cricket again until late in the year with the Ashes or possibily a match against Afghanistan. Australia have a limited-overs tour of the West Indies and the T20 World Cup in India later in the year, but Lyon hasn’t played an ODI since the 2019 World Cup and a T20I since 2018, although he was part of the squad that travelled to England for the limited-overs tour last year.Lyon does still aspire to be part of Australia’s limited-overs teams but should he not be selected for any tour he could spend the entire winter at home for the first time since his professional debut in 2011.Related

Cummins and Carey return to Sheffield Shield action

Starc and Smith withdraw from Sheffield Shield clash

“I’ve actually never done a full pre-season in my professional career,” Lyon said. “It’s probably a really good opportunity for me to recharge, refresh, do all the work with New South Wales cricket but also go out and do my stuff that I do with Tom Carter, my personal trainer as well. So it would be a really good opportunity to try and reset some goals and look to where we can get to.”Lyon does have the opportunity to press his claims for a return to the ODI side with a the Marsh Cup campaign for New South Wales and he still has one eye on the India-England Test series where a drawn series, among other specific results, would see Australia through to the WTC final.”My plans will simply be with NSW cricket and put my hand up for further selection with Australia on any white-ball tours that may be up,” Lyon said. “It’s a good opportunity with the one-day competition here domestically running through to the end of the season to put some really good performances in there and put my hand up for selection.”But also quite hopeful that England and India have an amazing drawn Test series over there in India.”Nathan Lyon picked up his best Sheffield Shield figures•Getty Images

For now, Lyon’s priorities are with New South Wales’ Sheffield Shield side following the postponement of the Test tour to South Africa. He bowled magnificently in the loss to Victoria last week where he claimed 10 wickets for the match for the first time in Shield cricket and took his 600th first-class wicket.”It’s been a massive achievement that I didn’t know was around the corner until the ground announcer announced that last week and that even surprised, not just me, but Steve Smith and he started calling me an old fella now,” Lyon said. “It’s a massive milestone. Hopefully, a few more to go, though.”Lyon revealed that he and his Blues and Australia team-mates, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood had debriefed the series loss to India over a couple of rounds of golf. The frustration still lingers over missed opportunities but the experienced foursome are keen to improve ahead of next year’s Ashes.”I’ve had a lot of time to debrief and have played a couple of rounds of golf with the big quicks, and we’ve had some really good conversations about where we can get better and what we’ve learnt throughout that Test series,” he said. “If we’re being honest I just don’t think we took our opportunities in the field or with the bat or with the ball, unfortunately.”But also some days you just need to take your hat off and say to the opposition well played. I think India came out and were really well planned.”There’s a bit of learning. I just really wish if I could rewind time, would just take those opportunities when we were on top to really drive the game and not let the opposition have a sniff of getting back into the competition. That’s one big learning for us.”

Fit-again Shadab Khan eager to overcome poor bowling form

T20I and ODI vice-captain acknowledges his role is that of a bowling allrounder

Umar Farooq21-Mar-2021

After recovering from his groin injury, Shadab Khan – the Pakistan limited-overs vice-captain – has set his focus on reviving his bowling form as his primary objective. As for his batting, he wants to mould that part of his game as per the team’s demands, clear in his head that his role in the team is of a “bowling allrounder.”His bowling form has taken a hit for a few seasons now, but Shadab believes it was the pain from the injury that was having an adverse effect on him. In his first two years of international cricket that began in 2017, Shadab averaged 18.59, with an economy rate of 6.84 and 44 wickets in T20Is, but thereafter his last nine wickets – since October 2019 when Sri Lanka toured Pakistan – have come at an average of 42.33 and an economy rate of 8.46.”There were injuries, but now I am fully fit and putting a lot of hard work with the ball and I am expecting to get a better result,” Shadab said. “I still haven’t moved away from my role as a bowling allrounder. Bowling is crucial as I started my career in 2017 with the Champions Trophy, and my bowling was the highlight there. I am very much focused to have it back. Batting is a plus point and if my team is demanding something from me as a batsman, then it’s a good skill to have.”I know I wasn’t up to the mark and haven’t done well with the ball lately that is mainly because of the groin injury. My bowling action takes a lot of energy and causes pain and was directly affecting it. Batting is different and it wasn’t affected by my injury, so it gave an impression that I am into batting only. But I still see myself as a bowling allrounder. I have evolved with the bat, but there were mistakes identified this year as I was struggling in the PSL. Misbah-ul-Haq (head coach) and Younis Khan (batting coach) are working in the nets to rectify that.”He had missed the home white-ball series against Zimbabwe late last year when he first complained about his groin injury but had recovered in time for the New Zealand tour. The problem, however, got worse during a tour game in Christchurch, but he was cleared to lead Pakistan in the T20Is after Babar Azam picked up a finger injury. Shadab was later ruled out of the Test series and remained with the squad for his rehabilitation. He returned to the field during PSL 2021 but averaged 56.50 with the ball in four games taking only two wickets for 8.69 runs per over.Shadab Khan’s batting has been impressive in the last 12 months in T20s•PCB

His batting, meanwhile, turned heads, with a strike rate of 144.73 in T20s in the last 12 months, across the PSL, the National T20 Cup, and the T20Is against England and New Zealand. But the allrounder wants to get back to his old way with the ball. He is preparing for the South Africa series with a training camp currently undergoing at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium. Pakistan do not have a spin-bowling coach but Shadab said Waqar Younis is good enough to work with his bowling. In the camp, he is understood to have bowled spells that are longer than four overs to regain confidence.”His primary job is to pick up wickets and win games for Pakistan,” Waqar said. “He is our premier cricketer and with the ball in hand, he can do wonders for the team. With the bat, it’s a bonus and we do consider him as an allrounder with bowling as his main role.”Unfortunately, he has been struggling with the injury but he is a fighter and gives his all for the country, even when he is in pain. Because of the pain, his bowling was not in control. But I am making him bowl a little longer in the nets to get his method right and he is getting his rhythm back. I am hopeful he will do the job for Pakistan.”With Shadab’s fluctuating returns, the selectors couldn’t resist looking for other options. In his absence last year, Pakistan got in legspinners Usman Qadir and Zahid Mahmood in the side along with left-arm spinner Mohammad Nawaz. Shadab has, however, remained the side’s vice-captain and acknowledges that nobody’s spot in the starting XI is guaranteed.”I know there is big competition around me which I see as a healthy one for the team,” Shadab said. “It’s not my team, it’s Pakistan, and if the team is winning with me or another player that is eventually what we all want for the country. The team right now has become so rich that we have back-ups for every position. It’s a good sign for a good team in the world. Such competition is useful. It puts a bit of pressure on every player, but that anyway is always there when you play international cricket.”And there should be pressure all the time. It keeps you alive and you enjoy playing in it. The sense of competition is important as well. Like how good Usman is doing in his career since he got in and look at Zahid’s debut. And Nawaz is picking up his chances well. So I know that we all know that whoever performs will remain in the team.”

He’s like Henry: Chelsea could sign a £100m Omorodion & Osimhen alternative

Things really seem to be kicking off at Chelsea in the past 24 hours, with moves for Samu Omorodion (incoming) and Conor Gallagher (outgoing) in danger, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Chelsea has spent a large majority of the summer assessing the market as they targeted a new striker signing to compete with Nicolas Jackson, and that looked set to finally be Omorodion, who would join on a seven-year deal.

Samu Omorodion for Alaves

With the Omorodion deal looking unlikely now, Chelsea will have to turn their attention elsewhere. Victor Osimhen has been the main name touted apart from the 20-year-old Spaniard, but there could yet be some surprise names that emerge.

Chelsea's potential Omorodion alternative

According to reports from Football.London, Chelsea could be presented with an opportunity to move for Newcastle striker, Alexander Isak, in the midst of the Omorodion deal collapsing.

Indeed, with Noni Madueke of interest to those at the Toon, it's suggested that in order to conclude a deal, the Blues could attempt to agree a deal for the Sweden international too.

Newcastle striker Alexander Isak

While the claim is somewhat of a speculative shout, the Londoners have looked at Isak in the past, with reports earlier this summer claiming that interest is certainly there.

Other names Chelsea have considered up top include Aston Villa's Jhon Duran, and Lille's Jonathan David, after their failed attempt for Isak earlier in the summer window, when they enquired about the forward.

Isak made 40 appearances for Newcastle in all competitions last season, scoring 25 goals, providing two assists, and totalling 2,973 minutes played.

How Isak compares to Thierry Henry

Many have likened the 24-year-old to Arsenal legend, Thierry Henry, who had a similar long and slender build, with a powerful stride, and a deadly finish. Newcastle manager, Eddie Howe even agreed, stating "I can see the comparisons", speaking of the two.

Much like Isak, Henry played both as a striker and off the left, playing more off the left for Monaco before joining Arsenal, where Arsène Wenger prioritised his development as a striker. Henry made 377 appearances for the Gunners, scoring 228 goals and providing 98 assists.

Isak has currently made 67 appearances for Newcastle, registering 35 goals and supplying five assists in those games. Both strikers have a knack for scoring, are known to be clinical finishers in front of goal, and even share a similar side-footed shot, slotting into the bottom corner when 1v1 with the keeper.

Isak, in comparison, scored ten goals and provided two assists in his first half-season in the Premier League, joining in January and making 22 appearances. He then, as mentioned earlier, managed 23 G/A last Premier League campaign, scoring 21 and assisting two.

The numbers Isak is posting already in a side that isn't challenging near the top of the table are extremely close to the levels Henry showed early on. The 24-year-old averages 0.60 non-penalty goals per 90, ranking in the top 14% among other strikers in the top five leagues.

The £100m-rated talent also scores at a 0.22 goals/shot rate, ranking in the top 10% among strikers in the top five leagues for this metric, which just shows his level of clinical finishing and poise.

If Chelsea could somehow manage to land Isak from Newcastle, they would finally have their 20+ goal per season striker, and one that has already proven he can do it in the Premier League.

South Africa's IPL-bound players will be allowed to leave Pakistan series early

IPL franchises considering pooling together to arrange chartered flight for the group

Quinton de Kock and David Miller will be among the group of players moving between the two series•Associated Press

South Africa’s IPL-bound players who are part of the national squad for the limited-overs series against Pakistan, which starts on April 2, will be allowed by Cricket South Africa to fly out to India after the second ODI on April 4. The Pakistan series includes three ODI series, followed by four T20Is running till April 16. The IPL begins on April 9.The new-ball pair of Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje (both Delhi Capitals), wicketkeeper batsman Quinton de Kock (Mumbai Indians), power-hitter David Miller (Rajasthan Royals) and pacer Lungi Ngidi (Chennai Super Kings) are expected to be part of the group travelling straight from the Pakistan series into the IPL.ESPNcricinfo understands that the franchises involved are checking on whether pooling in to arrange a chartered flight is a viable option, considering that would then allow some of the players to not miss their team’s first matches. According to BCCI guidelines, team members do not need to do the mandatory seven-day quarantine in their hotel rooms if they are moving between biosecure team bubbles via chartered flights. If players take commercial flights, then they will need to undergo quarantine before they can link up with those already in the IPL bubble. The IPL opener, on April 9, will be between defending champions Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore in Chennai. The next day the Capitals, who finished runners-up in IPL 2020, will compete against three-time champions Super Kings in Mumbai. The Royals play their first match on April 12 in Mumbai against the Punjab Kings.
