Rikki Clarke runs through Kent after Ben Foakes' ton serves England reminder

Veteran allrounder takes 5 for 15 to spark dramatic Kent collapse

Rikki Clarke took three wickets for just one run in his first three overs, and 5 for 13 overall in an outstanding and dramatic afternoon spell to bowl Surrey back into their Bob Willis Trophy clash with Kent at The Oval.At 118 for 9 in their second innings, Kent lead by 182, but the third day of a fascinating contest was turned completely on its head by veteran allrounder Clarke – with help from Sam Curran and Matt Dunn – and Surrey will now fancy their own chances of a first win the competition, following three defeats in their first three games.Clarke, who will be 39 at the end of next month, finished with figures of 12-7-15-5, while Curran took 3 for 35 as Kent collapsed initially from 63 for 1 to 69 for 5 in mid-afternoon, and then again from 100 for 5 after a mini-recovery was staged by Grant Stewart, who hit Dunn for two lovely off driven fours, and Marcus O’Riordan.By tea Kent, had slid to a shell-shocked 102 for 8, and after a short rain shower, Curran had Matt Milnes leg-before for 7 with a superb inswinger. Rain, however, then returned and allowed just 5.1 overs to be bowled after the tea interval. Kent will start the final day with both Nathan Gilchrist and Hamidullah Qadri, the last pair, on 4.The drama of the third innings began with Kent’s acting captain Daniel Bell-Drummond scoring his side’s first 18 runs before Curran, operating from around the wicket, skidded one into his pads to have him leg-before during a morning session which began with Surrey bowled out for 278 after resuming their first innings on 239 for 7.Jordan Cox and Jack Leaning took Kent to 35 for 1 at lunch and went on to add 45 for the second wicket before Clarke came into the attack to such devastating effect.Leaning was Clarke’s first victim, leg-before for 14, and then Ollie Robinson was bowled third ball for 0 shouldering arms to a nip-backer. Cox was bowled off an inside edge for a composed 32 in Clarke’s next over and Darren Stevens thick-edged an attempted offside force at Dunn to Scott Borthwick at second slip to go for a fourth-ball 0 when more circumspection was needed. Then, shortly before tea, Clarke struck twice more – with the first ball of his ninth over to have Stewart leg-before for 22, and then with the fourth ball of his tenth over as Harry Podmore edged to Will Jacks at second slip to go for 2.In between those two strikes, moreover, which gave Clarke figures of 9.4-5-13-5 at the interval, Curran had O’Riordan caught low down at first slip by Clarke – who else? – with the 22-year-old departing for an obdurate but never permanent-looking 9.The result of the seven-wicket session was a total transformation of the match situation, with Surrey and not Kent now looking at forcing a win in this south group fixture. It was also a remarkable intervention by Clarke, who was reportedly carrying an injury niggle into this game and only made a late decision to play.Earlier in the day, Ben Foakes’ first county red-ball hundred since 2017 could not prevent Kent from earning themselves a first innings lead of 64.Foakes, on 88 overnight, was last out for 118 as it took Kent 17.4 overs to finish Surrey off, with the last two wickets falling in the first two overs with the second new ball.Adam Finch added just a single before being pinned in front by Podmore for 10, in the morning’s sixth over, but Foakes went to the tenth first-class hundred of his career with a sweetly-timed cover boundary off Stevens, and he also punched Podmore straight for his 17th four before Milnes and Stewart wrapped up the innings in successive overs.Milnes, with the fourth ball with the second new ball, had Dunn leg-before for 8 and Foakes, having faced 188 balls and batted for just short of five hours, tried to run a short ball from Stewart to third man and edged to Cox at slip.”After being in the England Test bubble for ten or eleven weeks it’s lovely to be out there playing again and just to be outside with the rest of the Surrey guys,” Foakes said.”Being in the bubble was tricky once the matches had started, because it’s difficult to see the other lads out there when you are not involved. In the second Test bubble I did struggle a bit because I knew I wasn’t likely to play, but the first bubble was a good experience.”It was also good to have time to work on my game over the last few months, and there were a few little technical things batting-wise that I did work on. In this match, I must say I have felt good out there.”

Forest can take Elanga to the next level by signing "world-class" £20m ace

Two years on from promotion, Nottingham Forest’s squad has undergone a huge transition, with countless signings coming in to try and bridge the gap created by numerous sides in the Premier League.

The play-off final victory over Huddersfield Town is a day that will live long in the memory of all Reds supporters, but it’s safe to say the squad looks completely different a couple of years after the Wembley triumph.

Out of the matchday squad during the victory, only academy graduates Joe Worrall and Ryan Yates remain under contract at the City Ground, in a squad full of loanees.

The club recruited excellently during the 2021/22 season, with loanees Keinan Davis, Philip Zinckernagel and James Garner all playing a crucial part in Steve Cooper’s side during that campaign – scoring 16 goals and registering 23 assists combined in all competitions.

However, despite the trio’s triumphs in the East Midlands, none of which signed permanently, all going on to enjoy various levels of success away from the Reds.

One player from that season has failed to kick on since his temporary stint on Trentside, but given his time at Forest, the club would be silly to not pursue a new deal for him given his time for the club.

Why Nottingham Forest must sign former loan star this summer

It may be a potential move that divides opinion, but full-back Djed Spence has failed to replicate his form following his £20m move to Tottenham Hotspur back in the summer of 2022, featuring just six times for Spurs’ first-team.

Djed Spence enjoys rare minutes on the pitch as Antonio Conte watches on for Tottenham Hotspur.

He’s since endured loans at Rennes, Leeds United and Genoa, looking a shadow of his Forest self, with the former Middlesbrough talent evidently lacking in confidence in recent years.

The move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium was one that was meant to catapult the 23-year-old into a top Premier League talent, but unfortunately, he’s found himself struggling for minutes in North London.

With Ange Postecoglou’s side wanting to invest in new talent themselves, they will be looking to offload numerous players to raise funds, with Spence likely to be one player heading for the exit door – as Fabrizio Romano has reported.

With Forest having been interested in a permanent deal back in 2022 – and with Yates seemingly backing a reunion last summer – a fresh approach should be in order this time around, with his talents massively benefiting current Forest star Anthony Elanga.

Why Spence could take Elanga to the next level

During his temporary stint with the Reds, Spence excelled, pocketing Gabriel Martinelli during the 1-0 victory over Arsenal in the FA Cup third round – with pundit Ian Wright stating at the time that he had "not seen a combative, technical, swashbuckling performance like that for a very long time".

Djed Spence

He was subsequently dubbed “world-class” by analyst EBL, a fair comment given his rapid development under Cooper during the club’s promotion-winning campaign.

He featured 42 times for the Reds, scoring three goals and averaging 4.4 progressive carries per 90 – a figure that ranked him within the top 6% of all defenders in the division during 2021/22.

Spence also averaged 1.9 successful take-ons, a figure that could work well in Nuno Espírito Santo’s back-five system, with the Portuguese boss utilising players who have the ability to thrive at both ends of the pitch.

His subsequent stats would hugely benefit Reds winger Elanga, who likes to link up with an overlapping full-back as demonstrated with Neco Williams this season – the former Manchester United registering 14 goal involvements in a promising debut campaign at the City Ground.

The Swede likes to beat a man, with his pace and strength a huge asset to Forest and one that could see him and Spence form a deadly partnership as the full-back did with Brennan Johnson during the 2021/22 season, as the Wales international plundered 28 goals and assists across all fronts.

Having that combination of Spence and Johnson's successor – Elanga – down the right flank could well be frightening for the Tricky Trees next season.

Forest could finally replace Samba by signing "top-quality" Sels upgrade

The club desperately need reinforcements in the goalkeeping department.

Euro 2024 Group B profile: Teams, players, fixtures and venues

Euro 2024 is now fast approaching, with Germany playing hosts to the latest edition of the European Championship as 24 teams look to lift the famous Henri Delaunay trophy.

Despite an expanded modern tournament these days, the group stages still throw up big meetings from the continent's best – and this year's finals, which kick off on Friday 14th June, is no different.

Group B is arguably the ‘group of death’, with defending champions Italy, 2018 World Cup finalists Croatia and three-time winners Spain all facing off against each other, alongside outsiders Albania.

Spain have been in fine form since the 2022 World Cup, losing just twice under new manager Luis de la Fuente. The 62-year-old has worked his way up through the national system, taking charge of Spain’s U19, U21 and U23 sides before replacing Luis Enrique at senior level.

Scotland pushed Spain for the top spot when it came to qualifying for the competition, and De la Fuente should have a mixture of experience and youth in his squad this summer. Dani Carvajal, Rodri and Alvaro Morata could be some of the more knowledgeable heads in the starting XI, while exciting youngsters Pedri, Nico Williams and Lamine Yamal may spell the future.

Since their win in 2012, Spain have struggled at the Euros by their recent high standards, being knocked out in the round of 16 in 2016 and at the semi-final stage of Euro 2020, so it could once again be time for La Roja to stage a serious push for the title.

Croatia have been a threat in a number of recent major tournaments, taking on France in the 2018 World Cup final and finishing third in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. However, in the European Championship, Croatia have been knocked out in the last 16 in 2016 and 2020, so Zlatko Dalic will be hoping for a deeper run this time around.

They qualified through the group stages without needing the play-offs thanks to a bit of help from Armenia, who drew with Wales in the penultimate round of fixtures.

Some younger stars are also emerging as well, such as Manchester City defender Josko Gvardiol and Dinamo Zagreb winger Martin Baturina.

Therefore, they may fancy their chances of getting out of the group again despite a tough group draw, with their recent friendly win over Portugal a reminder of what they are capable of.

The defending champions left it late to book their automatic spot in the tournament through the qualifiers, finishing level on points with Ukraine after a nervy goalless draw in the final round of fixtures.

However, since lifting the trophy at Wembley with a dramatic penalty shootout victory over England, Luciano Spalletti's side have had struggled for form, with Roberto Mancini parting ways during this period, so you could argue that they aren’t the favourites to top or even potentially qualify from Group B.

Albania will be the big underdogs in Group B, however, they could spring a surprise after topping their qualifying group ahead of the likes of Poland and the Czech Republic.

They conceded just four times in eight games during qualifying, with former Brazil left-back Sylvinho the man in charge since 2023. He has plenty of experience to call upon at the back, with Atalanta’s Berat Djimsiti and Lazio’s Elseid Hysaj regulars in helping their country to the major tournament.

Alyssa Healy aims to develop 360-degree strokeplay: 'You might see some new things from me'

The Australia wicketkeeper-batter wants to be able to score 360 degrees around the wicket

Andrew McGlashan22-Sep-2020Bowlers beware. Alyssa Healy might be about to bring out even more shots. The Australia wicketkeeper-batter could unveil some new strokeplay in the series against New Zealand which starts on Saturday, having used the extended Covid-19-enforced break from the game to look at how she can become a full 360-degree player. The last time Healy picked up a bat in a match was the T20 World Cup final at the MCG on March 8 where she plundered 75 off 39 balls against India to give Australia a position from where they never threatened to lose the match. That performance, in front of more than 86,000 people, capped a tournament where Healy had bounced back from a rare lean run of form leading into the event where she had made five single-figure scores in a row during the tri-series, involving England in India, which followed a world-record 148 not out against Sri Lanka last October.ALSO READ: Healy: ‘Opportunity to play four big events in 2022 daunting but also exciting’That run of low scores, which followed a WBBL that was below her typical high standards, was very much a blip in what had been a dominant two years from Healy where she had transformed her game to become one of the leading batters in the world – her ODI record since 2018 boasts an especially prolific average of 58.70 while in T20Is in the same period she averages 37.53 (despite that little lull) with a strike-rate of 153.58.However, while not wanting to give too much away to New Zealand, Healy said that there were parts of the ground that she wanted to be able to score more freely in and has been trying out some of the new skills during the two weeks of training she and the other quarantined players have undergone in Brisbane. That fortnight elapsed on Monday and the rest of the Australia squad arrived in the city to prepare for the three T20Is and ODIs apiece which will all be played at Allan Border Field.”After celebrating the World Cup for about a month, I sat down with my batting coach and discussed a few different things we could work on, not necessarily to jump to another level but prepare as best as I could for this New Zealand attack,” Healy said. “I don’t want to give away too many secrets to the Kiwis but have been preparing for a few things in particular. Stay tuned.””You might see some new things from me in this series. It was a great opportunity for me to go back and work on things that I hadn’t really touched for a while. I’d made some technical changes a couple of years ago and they paid off beautifully but you never want to be standing still; you want to keep learning, growing and developing and there’s always areas of your game that you want to work on.”Alyssa Healy was the Player of the Match in the 2020 T20 World Cup final, which was attended by a record 86,174 spectators•Getty Images

Despite having driven some of her bowling team-mates to distraction during training over the last two weeks, the internationals may come a little too soon for Healy to show off the full new range but she promised that if they don’t come out in Brisbane they’ll be on show in the WBBL next month.”I’ve driven all the bowlers a little agro over the last two weeks trying a few things in the nets,” she said. “We’ll have to wait and see if they come out in the game; [I am] not sure if I’m confident enough to do it yet but the ultimate goal in cricket is to be able to play 360 [degrees] and for me there’s some areas I haven’t quite been hitting so have been trying a few things. We’ll have to see if they come out this series, if not you’ll definitely see it in the WBBL.”ALSO READ: Cricket for some, not for all – where does the women’s game stand?Healy added that she did not see a lot of rust among the players who had been quarantining over the last two weeks despite the long absence from competitive cricket. Although the tour to South Africa after the T20 World Cup was postponed due to Covid-19 the team had been due an extended break over the winter, albeit some players would have been overseas in the UK, playing in the Hundred, under normal circumstances.”Form-wise, I’ve been really surprised with everyone around the group in the last two weeks of training, seeing the Victoria and New South Wales players go about it, there’s not a lot of rust around which is amazing,” she said. “I’m excited to see what this group can achieve with six months rest; every time we come back from a major tournament we are straight back into something else, so for us to have the ability to have some downtime will hopefully do some really good things for the Aussie women’s team.”And while Healy could see the bigger picture of how important it is for the women’s game to be up and running again – England and West Indies began their five-match T20I series on Monday in Derby – she said that the competitive instincts mean that the will to win would be as strong as ever come the weekend.”We want to win, and the Rose Bowl [one-day] series in particular is a really big one which we want to keep our hands on. Yes, I see the greater importance of having cricket back up and running here in Australia, but for us we are out there to win.”

Chelsea ask Barcelona about signing young forward after Michael Olise snub

Chelsea have asked European giants Barcelona about signing a young forward, amid their botched transfer plans involving Crystal Palace star Michael Olise.

Chelsea pull out of Olise race as Bayern reach agreement

The west Londoners have been publicly chasing Olise for the best part of a fortnight, and reports originally suggested that Chelsea were firm favourites to complete a deal for the 22-year-old.

Indeed, claims surfaced last week that Olise had agreed personal terms with Chelsea, but this appears to have been unfounded, as German giants Bayern Munich have now reportedly reached an agreement with Palace over his transfer.

As per Fabrizio Romano, following an exclusive story from fellow top transfer guru David Ornstein, Chelsea pulled out of the race for Olise – deeming the financial requests involved too high.

Following the botched talks to sign Olise, Romano claims that Enzo Maresca and co still want to bring in two new attackers – a striker and a winger – while they also close in on a deal for highly-rated Brazilian starlet Estevao from Palmeiras.

"After Michael Olise deal collapsed, Chelsea are still keen on bringing in two more attackers in the summer transfer window," said Romano on X.

"Enzo Maresca, expected to have at least one more striker and one more winger. In addition to this, Chelsea will soon sign Estevão for summer 2025."

It is back to the drawing board for co-sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley after missing out on a top transfer target. Amidst the Olise drama, it is believed that Chelsea have approached Barcelona over signing a very exciting young forward.

Chelsea approach Barcelona over deal for Marc Guiu

According to respected journalist Guillem Balague, Chelsea have asked Barcelona about Marc Guiu – who left his family in tears after making a stunning senior debut at the Camp Nou last season.

The 18-year-old, whose contract includes a bargain £5 million release clause, scored the winner against Athletic Bilbao in October just 23 seconds after coming off the bench.

Balague adds that this would be a "great investment" on behalf of Todd Boehly: "Chelsea have asked about 18 year old Marc Guiu.

"The young FCB striker who had such an impressive start of his career with the first team. He only cost €6m and are considering signing him! Great investment, cannot go wrong as his value will increase either at Chelsea or by selling him eventually."

The teenage sensation has made seven appearances for Barcelona since then, scoring twice in total, and he could be a great asset for the future,
