Ellyse Perry expects pace to be key at T20 World Cup

Australia’s fast bowlers rattled India in Canberra and it could be a feature of the coming weeks

Alex Malcolm06-Feb-2020Australia allrounder Ellyse Perry believes pace bowling could play a huge part in the T20 World Cup after she and Tayla Vlaeminck ripped through India’s middle order last weekend. The pair took 7 for 26 between them in eight overs at Manuka Oval, including five wickets in 10 balls, to help set up a four-wicket win.Vlaeminck touched speeds of 120kph and bounced out both Jemimah Rodrigues and Arundhati Reddy while Perry’s extra bounce forced three catches to be sliced behind square on the off side.ALSO READ: Meg Lanning uses stranger’s swimming pool to ease back conditionA large number of matches could be played on quicker pitches than some of the regular women’s international and WBBL venues including the WACA, Manuka Oval, the SCG, and MCG.”I think fast bowling in general, if you look at the trend across the WBBL earlier this season, it’s almost come back into vogue a little bit in a sense,” Perry said.”I think maybe the last couple of years, spin’s been a little bit more dominant from a bowling point of view but certainly later in the summer, the wickets are a little bit harder, they’ve probably had a bit more time so they’ve got a bit more carry and bounce, and if you look at Tayla Vlaeminck’s performance last weekend in Canberra, she’s got incredible x-factor on Australian wickets and that was really crucial for us in that second game against India. So I think across the board, fast bowling is going to play a big role in this world cup which is really exciting.”Perry bowled superbly in eight of the nine overs she delivered last weekend taking 1 for 9 against England and 4 for 13 against India but did suffer some punishment at the hands of England’s Heather Knight in the Super Over on Saturday where she conceded 10 in four balls defending just eight.Ellyse Perry poses in front of a T20 World Cup mural featuring her in Melbourne•Getty Images

Perry said Australia’s loss in the opening game was the perfect preparation for what is to come. “You certainly want to have those kinds of moments leading into a tournament rather than when you’re in them,” she said.”But a big part of that is just the habit of winning and making sure that, whatever circumstances you face, because every game is going to be different, every [set of] conditions are going to be different, oppositions are different, so it’s really about just having that knack of finding a way to win.”We’ve had some really good chats around that over the last couple of days, just making sure that we’re able to adapt quickly to whatever is thrown at us and also I think you’re always better for a few games. It’s nice to be back together. We haven’t played together for quite a while. So, all in all, I think it’s brilliant preparation for us.”Australia face India and England again at the Junction Oval in Melbourne on Saturday and Sunday and two wins would guarantee a spot in Wednesday’s tri-series final.Australia skipper Meg Lanning is expected to return after missing the England Super Over and the India game in Canberra due to a back issue.Perry said the batting group has had some honest discussions this week after disappointing showings in the first two matches of the series.”I think it’s probably just a little bit around decision-making and also taking the game on at the right time and the right circumstances. I think we were maybe a little bit timid in some ways. It’s funny when you come back together with a group you haven’t played with for a while, just finding your place again and the roles that you’ve got to play in that order, and we’re really fortunate to have great depth in our batting line up and it was wonderful to see Annabel Sutherland do as well as she did.”But at the same time, I think you’ve still got to take ownership at the top and we probably didn’t do that well over the weekend. Certainly, at the Junction Oval, which is a wonderful place to bat, it’s a good opportunity for us all to do a little bit better this weekend.”

Everton made to regret signing flop whose value has plummeted by £17.5m

Everton have certainly endured their fair share of setbacks this season, with off-the-field issues tarnishing the superb job Sean Dyche has done at Goodison Park.

The club have been deducted eight points for breaking the Premier League's PSR rules for the previous financial year, dropping the club to within two points of the drop zone.

Without the removal of their points, the Toffees would be all but safe, ten points clear of the relegation places and sitting in 14th place in the Premier League.

The club's defensive record has been a huge help in their bid to retain their ever-present Premier League status, conceding just 48 times – a record bettered by only the top three in the division.

However, it's their goalscoring record that has held them back from pulling further clear of safety, with Dyche's side only finding the back of the net on 32 occasions – only Sheffield United have scored less this season.

The Toffees invested heavily in a new striker in the summer, but he's failed to make a huge impact at Goodison and is starting to look like a poor investment.

Beto's stats at Everton

After joining the club from Udinese during the summer of 2023, Portuguese forward Beto arrived on Merseyside with high hopes of being the club's long-term focal point, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin constantly plagued with injuries.

However, he's endured a tricky start to life in England and failed to live up to the hype that was produced upon his move to Goodison Park.

He's featured 27 times for Dyche's side in the Premier League this campaign, scoring on just three occasions, with the 26-year-old wasting numerous golden opportunities.

As seen in the video above, the striker missed a guilt-edged opportunity to hand the Toffees the lead in the meeting with Chelsea, with the home side going on to run away with a 6-0 win.

It's unfair to solely blame the defeat on Beto, but had he finished off the early opportunity, the game might've been completely different – with the side looking short of confidence for much of the encounter.

beto-everton-dominic-calvert-lewin-dyche-dwight-mcneil-injury-premier-league

The striker has an xG of 6.79, meaning, based on the chances he's been presented this season, he should've scored nearly seven times but has only managed to find the net on three occasions.

He's wasted 3.79 xG worth of chances this campaign, with Everton's poor goalscoring record no surprise given his wasteful play in front of goal during 2023/24.

Beto's market value in 2024

The club forked out £26m for his signature last summer, but his poor form in front of goal this season has seen his market value rapidly decrease in recent months.

He's now only valued at £8.5m, as per Football Observatory, with Beto's value dropping by £17.5m – or 67% – during his eight-month stint at Goodison.

His 6 foot 4 frame makes him a handful for opposition defenders, with his willing running and ability to play on the shoulder a huge asset that Dyche needs to try and focus on rather than direct balls into his feet or in the air for him to challenge.

There's clearly a player in Beto, but the club are paying the price for his numerous missed opportunities in the 18-yard box, with the supporters needing to be patient if they are to see the best of the Portuguese forward.

At present, however, the summer signing simply looks a "little bit lost" – in the words of journalist Paul Brown.

Spurs must unleash "relentless" £90k-p/w star for Maddison to thrive

Tottenham Hotspur are finally back in action in the Premier League this afternoon as they prepare to host rivals Arsenal in the North London derby.

Spurs have not had a game since their 4-0 defeat to Newcastle United at St. James' Park on the 13th of April, and now have a chance to come back with a bang in a huge clash against the Gunners.

Ange Postecoglou's team are seven points adrift of the Champions League places after Aston Villa's 2-2 draw with Chelsea on Saturday night, which makes three points against Arsenal all the more valuable.

The Lilywhites will also want to avenge their disappointing defeat on Tyneside and the head coach could look to make some changes to the starting XI in order to facilitate a strong response from his team.

Ange Postecoglou

Richarlison, who has not featured since the 2nd of April against West Ham United, must finally be unleashed from the start after returning to training this week after a knee injury.

The Brazil international is fit enough to feature against the Gunners today and Timo Werner should be dropped for the striker to thrive alongside James Maddison in the final third, as the pair could bully William Saliba and Gabriel.

Timo Werner's performance against Newcastle in numbers

The RB Leipzig loanee lined up on the left flank at St. James' Park and should now be ditched, with captain Heung-min Son moving back to his more natural role on the wing, to make room for Richarlison to lead the line.

Werner, who has scored two goals in 12 Premier League appearances so far this season, endured a difficult afternoon on Tyneside with his wasteful finishing.

As you can see in the table above, the Germany international's work in and out of possession left a lot to be desired for Postecoglou throughout the game.

Off the ball, Newcastle's players found it far too easy to get the better of him in physical duels, as shown by his success in just two of his seven battles.

Werner, however, did not make up for being a lightweight out of possession by providing quality play in the final third. He missed the one 'big chance' that fell his way and failed to find the back of the net with any of his four efforts on goal.

Why Richarlison should be unleashed

Richarlison should now be unleashed from the start against the Gunners as he has the quality to make a big impact in front of goal, based on his form so far this season.

After a dreadful return of one goal from an xG (Expected Goals) of 3.32 in 27 league matches during his first season with Spurs during the 2022/23 campaign, the ex-Everton star has enjoyed a superb time with the club this time around.

The 26-year-old marksman has showcased his lethal nature in the box with ten goals from an xG of 8.84, which shows that he has more than made the most of the opportunities that his teammates have provided him with.

His tally of ten goals from 17 league starts for the Lilywhites means that the ex-Watford ace has averaged a goal every 1.7 starts on average this term.

Tottenham forward Richarlison.

Richarlison, who has missed seven 'big chances' in the Premier League this season, has also created two 'big chances' and registered three assists for his fellow attackers.

The £90k-per-week forward, whose running was once hailed as "relentless" by journalist Joe Strange, has the ability to make a difference in the Premier League as both a scorer and a creator of goals for Spurs.

In fact, he currently ranks within the top 9% of forwards in the top-flight for non-penalty goals per 90 (0.66) and the top 29% for assists per 90 (0.20).

This shows that the right-footed whiz has been one of the most lethal strikers in the Premier League, as he has been prolific from open play and above average as a creator for his teammates.

Richarlison will, however, need high-quality service to allow him to punish Arsenal and that is why Maddison playing in the number ten position behind him is paramount to the success of unleashing the Brazilian.

Why Richarlison and Maddison could bully Gabriel and Saliba

There is no getting away from the fact that the Gunners have the best defence in the division. They have only conceded 26 league goals so far this season – six fewer than any other side.

Gabriel and Saliba, Mikel Arteta's two first-choice centre-backs, have played a significant role in that impressive record, but Maddison has already punished them once already this term.

In the reverse fixture in September, the England international put on a creative masterclass to tear the Arsenal defence to shreds, assisting both of his team's goals in the 2-2 draw.

As you can see in the table above, Maddison had no issues creating high-quality opportunities for his teammates against the two exceptional centre-backs, as he teed up Son for two goals.

The former Leicester and Norwich star ranks within the top 9% of Premier League attacking midfielders and wingers for assists per 90 (0.36), and the top 1% for shot-creating actions per 90 (6.89).

This, and his performance against Arsenal in September, suggests that the 27-year-old star has the creative ability to split Gabriel and Saliba apart to create opportunities for Richarlison to find the back of the net.

Then, the Brazil international's form in front of goal this season suggests that he has the quality to make the most of the chances that Maddison can create for him.

Ange must unleash Spurs' "titanic" £85k-p/w star with Kulusevski

Tottenham will be desperate to secure a result against title-chasing Arsenal in the Premier League.

ByAngus Sinclair Apr 28, 2024

His xG overperformance speaks to his fantastic finishing ability in the final third and that is why Postecoglou must unleash the pair this afternoon, as they could combine at the top end of the pitch to bully Gabriel and Saliba to secure a crucial result for Spurs in the hunt for Champions League qualification.

Cutting, Roy keep Quetta Gladiators on top of PSL table

Colin Ingram’s half-century for Islamabad United in vain

The Report by Sreshth Shah27-Feb-2020

Quetta Gladiators pulled off PSL 2020’s highest successful chase on the back of Ben Cutting’s unbeaten 17-ball 42, that helped them chase Islamabad United’s 188-run target in a five-wicket win. Cutting built on the efforts of Jason Roy and Sarfaraz Ahmed to ensure a result that kept Gladiators on top of the tournament points table. When Sarfaraz Ahmed was out at the start of the 16th over, Gladiators needed a further 55 runs in 29 balls, but Cutting’s two fours and four sixes, and a useful contribution from Mohammad Nawaz, sealed the win with two balls to spare.Cutting makes full use of Roy, Sarfaraz inningsAfter losing Shane Watson early in their chase, holing out to deep midwicket, the other Gladiators opener Jason Roy consolidated with a 38-ball 50 to keep the Gladiators’ asking rate within reach.Ahmed Shehzad entertained with two sixes off Shadab Khan but was out for a five-ball cameo of 12, stumped while trying a third big shot. Azam Khan did not last long either, bogged down by the spin of Ahmed Safi Abdullah and Shadab. Roy’s six fours and two sixes, however, took Gladiators past the 100-run mark in the 12th over. He fell right after bringing up his fifty, when he struck Abdullah into the hands of long-off.Sarfaraz, the Gladiators captain, then found the gap intermittently to hit 33 off 20 balls, but when he fell in the 16th over, the required run-rate was more than 11. That’s when Cutting took charge, first collecting 11 off Rumman Raees’ 17th over and then smacking 17 off Faheem Ashraf’s 18th. That brought the equation down to 16 off 12 balls, and Cutting ended the game with two sixes in the 20th over to earn the side third win in four games.United’s poor second-half with the batAfter 14 overs, Islamabad United were cruising. At 140 for 4, Colin Ingram was on 42 while Asif Ali had just walked in. Asif caused some damage with two sixes off Mohammad Nawaz but three wickets in three overs deflated United’s second-half flourish: they scored only 33 runs in the last five overs. The innings had begun with Luke Ronchi crunching 11 runs off the first three deliveries to hand United a flying start but he was bowled by Naseem Shah in the second over. Dawid Malan followed Ronchi back two overs later, but Colin Munro held one end up hitting Mohammad Hasnain and Naseem to all parts. Munro fell inside the Powerplay, but by the time he was out, United were at 56 for 3 and positioned for a sizeable total.United’s No. 5 Ingram picked up from where Munro left off. His leg-side play saw many boundaries hitting the midwicket fence, and he anchored United’s innings thereafter. With six overs to go, they were prepared for a charge that could have taken United past 200, but the dismissals of Asif and Ashraf in quick succession exposed their lower order, forcing Ingram to change his approach. Despite 15 runs off the final over, which helped Ingram reach his 40th T20 fifty, all United could manage was 187. It turned out to be too little on a true batting surface.

Spurs eyeing "wonderkid" who could be their next Modric

It's been a Premier League season of ups and downs for Tottenham Hotspur football club this year, and while they haven't been able to clinch that final Champions League place, the future looks bright.

Ange Postecoglou has instilled a new sense of attacking fervour within the squad, and with the right additions in the summer, they could go one step further next year.

Several players could be replaced over the coming months, and surprisingly, one of those could be Rodrigo Bentancur, as the latest star touted for a move to N17 could end up being the Lilywhites' next Luka Modrić.

Tottenham Hotspur transfer news

According to a recent report by respected journalist Graeme Bailey, Tottenham are one of several clubs interested in LOSC Lille star Angel Gomes.

The journalist revealed that, alongside the Lilywhites, the player's former club, Manchester United, West Ham United, and Aston Villa are also monitoring his situation ahead of an important summer transfer window.

No price has been reliably reported yet, but CIES Football Observatory currently values the midfield maestro at €30m, which converts to £26m.

While this isn't cheap by any means, if his final price is anywhere near CIES' valuation, then Spurs should be looking to bring the Englishman to N17 as he could be the perfect Bentancur upgrade and has won favourable comparisons to former White Hart Lane great, Modric.

How Gomes compares to Modric and Bentancur

Okay, so before getting onto the ways Gomes would be an improvement over Bentancur, it's time to look at the comparison to Real Madrid star Modric.

Luka Modric for Tottenham.

The comparison itself stems from FBref, which provides a list of the ten most similar players for each player in its database. They have concluded that the Croatian great is the fourth most similar midfielder in Europe's top five leagues to the Lille ace.

When looking at the pair's underlying numbers from this season, there are some key statistics that jump out as being quite close to one another, such as their expected goals, non-penalty expected goal and assists figure, number of shots, passing accuracy, the number of completed medium and long passes, their goal-creating actions, the number of blocks and ball recoveries they complete, and the number of aerial duels they win, all per 90.

It's certainly a flattering comparison to receive for the former United "wonderkid", as described by talent scout Jacek Kulig, but there is merit to it, and with the right coaching, he could end up reaching similar levels.

With that said, how does he compare to the man he'd likely replace in the centre of the park, Bentancur?

Well, from an output perspective, he comes out miles ahead. In his 44 appearances this season, the 23-year-old has scored two goals and provided ten assists, while the Uruguayan has scored one goal and provided one assist in 22 games.

The comparison is just as heavily weighted in the Englishman's favour when looking at the pair's underlying numbers, as he produces a higher non-penalty expected goal and assists figure, more progressive passes and carries, maintains a higher passing accuracy, produces more shot and goal-creating actions, and makes fewer errors, all per 90.

The Spurs man does take more shots and make more tackles, but that could well be more about the system than individual talent. Moreover, his potential replacement has started 15 games as a defensive midfielder in his short professional career, so there is no reason to think he couldn't be just as defensively astute.

Ultimately, while Bentancur is a talented midfielder, he doesn't stack up to Gomes in a genuine comparison, and considering the youngster has similarities to the Ballon d'Or-winning Modric, Spurs pulling the trigger and bringing him to N17 seems like a no-brainer.
